Clinical and allergological analysis of ocular manifestations of sick building syndrome

Analysis of Cytokine Production Profiles of Local and Systemic Lymphocytes in Sick Building Syndrome Compared with Ocular Allergy

Purpose

We have previously studied clinical and allergological aspects of sick building syndrome (SBS) cases with ocular disorders and found that SBS is suggested to be partially induced by an allergic response. We analyzed the cytokine production profiles of conjunctival and peripheral blood lymphocytes in patients with SBS with ocular manifestations to further evaluate the pathophysiology of SBS from an immunological standpoint.

Methods

We obtained conjunctival samples and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from 15 cases of SBS with ocular findings, 49 cases of allergic conjunctival diseases (ACD) (allergic conjunctivitis (AC), atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC), and vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC)), and normal controls. Frequencies of cytokine-producing T cells were analyzed by flow cytometry based on an intracellular cytokine staining method.

Results

Although no significant difference was observed in the percentage of interferon (IFN)-γ-producing CD4+ T cells in PBMC between patients with SBS and controls, the percentage of interleukin (IL)-4-producing PBMC CD4+ T cells in patients with SBS was significantly higher than that in controls. The percentage of IL-4-producing CD4+ T cells in the conjunctiva in patients with SBS was significantly higher than that in controls, whereas it was significantly lower than that in AKC and VKC. A significant correlation was observed between the percentage of IL-4-producing CD4+ T cells in the conjunctiva and clinical score.

Conclusion

These results suggest that SBS may be a kind of allergic disorder and that IL-4 plays a role in the development of allergic disorders in SBS ocular lesions.

Simulation and Analysis of Indoor Air Quality in Florida Using Time Series Regression (TSR) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) Models

Exposures to air pollutants have been associated with various acute respiratory diseases and detrimental human health. Analysis and further interpretation of air pollutant patterns are correspondingly important as monitoring them. In the present study, the 24-h and four-month indoor and outdoor PM2.5, PM10, NO2, relative humidity, and temperature were measured simultaneously for a laboratory in Gainesville city, Florida. The indoor PM2.5, PM10, and NO2 concentrations were predicted using multiple linear regression (MLR), time series regression (TSR), and artificial neural networks (ANN) models. The modeling conducted in this study aims to perform a cross comparison study between these models in a symmetric environment. The value of root-mean-square error was improved by 18.33% in comparison with the MLR model. In addition, the value of the coefficient of determination was improved by 24.68%. The ANN model had the best performance and could predict the target air pollutants at 10-min intervals of the studied building with 90% accuracy levels. The TSR model showed slightly better performance compared to the MLR model. These results can be accordingly referred for studies analyzing indoor air quality in similar building types and climate zones.

A Biplot-Based PCA Approach to Study the Relations between Indoor and Outdoor Air Pollutants Using Case Study Buildings

The 24 h and 14-day relationship between indoor and outdoor PM2.5, PM10, NO2, relative humidity, and temperature were assessed for an elementary school (site 1), a laboratory (site 2), and a residential unit (site 3) in Gainesville city, Florida. The primary aim of this study was to introduce a biplot-based PCA approach to visualize and validate the correlation among indoor and outdoor air quality data. The Spearman coefficients showed a stronger correlation among these target environmental measurements on site 1 and site 2, while it showed a weaker correlation on site 3. The biplot-based PCA regression performed higher dependency for site 1 and site 2 (p < 0.001) when compared to the correlation values and showed a lower dependency for site 3. The results displayed a mismatch between the biplot-based PCA and correlation analysis for site 3. The method utilized in this paper can be implemented in studies and analyzes high volumes of multiple building environmental measurements along with optimized visualization.

Sick building syndrome among healthcare workers and healthcare associates at observed general hospital in Slovenia

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to assess the possible associations between self-perceived sick building syndrome (SBS) symptoms among healthcare workers and healthcare associates and self-perceived parameters of indoor work environment quality.

METHODS

The cross-sectional study was conducted from February to April 2019. Validated standardized evaluation tools (MM 040 NA Hospital 2007 and MM 040 NA Office 2007) were used for estimating the prevalence of SBS among observed populations. Chi-square and Mann-Whitney U tests for assessing possible associations in SBS symptoms between healthcare workers and associates were used.

RESULTS

The response rate was 69.8%. The results showed a lower prevalence of six or more SBS symptoms in healthcare associates (6.4%) compared to healthcare workers (12.0%). Healthcare workers perceived the most frequent risk factors for SBS to be poor air quality, an inappropriate level of relative humidity, and inappropriate room temperature, while the least frequently self-perceived risk factors were inappropriate lighting and noise levels.

CONCLUSIONS

This study represents a platform for further analyses - the identification of health risk factors with environmental monitoring.

Low Cost, Multi-Pollutant Sensing System Using Raspberry Pi for Indoor Air Quality Monitoring

Deteriorating levels of indoor air quality is a prominent environmental issue that results in long-lasting harmful effects on human health and wellbeing. A concurrent multi-parameter monitoring approach accounting for most crucial indoor pollutants is critical and essential. The challenges faced by existing conventional equipment in measuring multiple real-time pollutant concentrations include high cost, limited deployability, and detectability of only select pollutants. The aim of this paper is to present a comprehensive indoor air quality monitoring system using a low-cost Raspberry Pi-based air quality sensor module. The custom-built system measures 10 indoor environmental conditions including pollutants: temperature, relative humidity, Particulate Matter (PM)2.5, PM10, Nitrogen dioxide (NO2), Sulfur dioxide (SO2), Carbon monoxide (CO), Ozone (O3), Carbon dioxide (CO2), and Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOCs). A residential unit and an educational office building was selected and monitored over a span of seven days. The recorded mean PM2.5, and PM10 concentrations were significantly higher in the residential unit compared to the office building. The mean NO2, SO2, and TVOC concentrations were comparatively similar for both locations. Spearman rank-order analysis displayed a strong correlation between particulate matter and SO2 for both residential unit and the office building while the latter depicted strong temperature and humidity correlation with O3, SO2, PM2.5, and PM10 when compared to the former.

A Systematic Review of Air Quality Sensors, Guidelines, and Measurement Studies for Indoor Air Quality Management

The existence of indoor air pollutants—such as ozone, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, particulate matter, and total volatile organic compounds—is evidently a critical issue for human health. Over the past decade, various international agencies have continually refined and updated the quantitative air quality guidelines and standards in order to meet the requirements for indoor air quality management. This paper first provides a systematic review of the existing air quality guidelines and standards implemented by different agencies, which include the Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS); the World Health Organization (WHO); the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA); the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH); the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE); the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH); and the California ambient air quality standards (CAAQS). It then adds to this by providing a state-of-art review of the existing low-cost air quality sensor (LCAQS) technologies, and analyzes the corresponding specifications, such as the typical detection range, measurement tolerance or repeatability, data resolution, response time, supply current, and market price. Finally, it briefly reviews a sequence (array) of field measurement studies, which focuses on the technical measurement characteristics and their data analysis approaches.

The role of IL-6-174 G/C polymorphism and intraocular IL-6 levels in the pathogenesis of ocular diseases: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is one of the key regulators behind the inflammatory and pathological process associated with ophthalmic diseases. The role of IL-6-174 G/C polymorphism as well as intraocular IL-6 levels among various eye disease patients differ across studies and has not been systematically reviewed. Thus, this study aims to provide a summary to understand the relationship between IL-6 and ophthalmic disease. In total, 8,252 and 11,014 subjects for IL-6-174 G/C and intraocular levels of IL-6, respectively, were retrieved from PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science. No association was found between IL-6-174 G/C polymorphisms with ocular diseases. Subgroup analyses revealed a suggestive association between the GC genotype of IL-6-174 G/C with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). Further, the level of intraocular IL-6 among ocular disease patients in general was found to be higher than the control group [standardized mean difference (SMD) = 1.41, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.24-1.58, P < 0.00001]. Closer examination through subgroup analyses yielded similar results in several ocular diseases. This study thus indicates that the IL-6-174 G/C polymorphism does not predispose patients to ocular disease, although the GC genotype is likely to be a genetic biomarker for PDR. Moreover, intraocular IL-6 concentrations are related to the specific manifestations of the ophthalmic diseases. Further studies with larger sample sizes are warranted to confirm this conclusion.

Building age, type of indoor heating and the occurrence of allergic rhinitis and asthma

Introduction

Structural materials and interior appliances are frequently mentioned as elements of modern buildings which may have an impact on the natural history of allergic diseases.

Aim

We hypothesized that the building age, the type of the heating system and the use of various indoor appliances can influence the occurrence of allergic rhinitis (AR) and asthma.

Material and methods

The study group comprised 18,617 individuals. The tool used in the study was the European Community Respiratory Health Survey (ECRHS) and the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) study questionnaire, adapted to European conditions (Middle and Eastern Europe) and used as part of the study called “Implementation of a System for the Prevention and Early Detection of Allergic Diseases in Poland”.

Results

Questionnaire results indicated that people living in homes built in the years 1971–1990 had higher rates of allergic rhinitis (OR = 1.15025), which was correlated with clinical findings of increased occurrence of seasonal allergic rhinitis (OR = 1.60543). The leading factor contributing to the intensification of AR symptoms was the central heating (OR = 1.45358). As opposed to AR, people living in buildings with central heating less often declared asthma (OR = 0.8407). A clinical examination confirmed that central heating reduced the symptoms of moderate asthma (OR = 0.3524).

Conclusions

Increasing building age and certain indoor heating methods are important risk factors for the occurrence of allergic rhinitis and asthma.
