Visian implantable contact lens versus AcrySof Cachet phakic intraocular lenses: comparison of aberrmetric profiles

The best choice for low and moderate myopia patients incapable for corneal refractive surgery: implantation of a posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens

PURPOSE

This study aims to evaluate the early clinical outcomes of central hole phakic posterior chamber intraocular lens(ICLV4c) implantation for low and moderate myopia correction.

METHODS

This retrospective clinical study included 27 patients(47 eyes)who underwent ICLV4c implantation to correct myopia with spherical equivalent (SE) between - 1.75D and -6.0D. The uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), intraocular pressure(IOP), central anterior chamber depth (ACD), vault, and endothelial cell density (ECD) were evaluated after surgery.

RESULTS

At one year follow-up, the postoperative UCVA of patients was higher than the preoperative CDVA and showed a stable trend. There was no significant difference in ECD (p > 0.05) one month after the surgery, the vault was 0.77 ± 0.32 mm, which decreased to 0.63 ± 0.26 mm after one year of surgery. Similarly, ACD was 3.24 ± 0.25 mm in the preoperative, which decreased significantly to 2.05 ± 0.39 mm at one month, while rose to 2.2 ± 0.39 mm at one year after surgery. There was no significant correlation between IOP and ACD and vault at one month and one year after surgery. The correlation coefficient between ACD and vault was found to be - 0.72 at one month after surgery, while the same -0.71 after one year. One patient developed visual fatigue, one with glare, and while no other complications were observed with the rest of the patients.

CONCLUSION

The ICL implantation is a safe, effective and stable method to correct low and moderate myopia, and may be a good alternative for patients with low and moderate myopia who cannot undergo corneal refractive surgery.

In vivo optical quality of posterior-chamber phakic implantable collamer lenses with a central port

BACKGROUND

The aim of this review is to summarize the optical quality results in patients following the implantation of the V4c implantable collamer lens with a central port (ICL, STAAR Surgical Inc.).

MAIN TEXT

A literature search in several databases was carried out to identify those publications, both prospective, retrospective and/or comparative with other refractive surgery procedures, reporting optical outcomes of patients who were implanted with the V4c ICL model. A total of 17 clinical studies published between 2012 and 2021 were included in this review. A detailed analysis of the available data was performed including number of eyes, follow-up and preoperative spherical equivalent. Specifically, the review focused on several optical parameters including higher-order aberrations (HOAs), modulation transfer function (MTF) cut-off frequency and Strehl ratio. This review encompassed a total of 817 eyes measured using different optical devices based on Hartmann-Shack, retinal image quality measurement and ray-tracing technologies at different follow-ups.

CONCLUSIONS

The outcomes found in this review lead us to conclude that the ICL V4c model provides good optical quality, by means of different metrics, when implanted.

Refractive outcomes of implantation of an implantable phakic copolymer lens with peripheral holes in the intraocular posterior chamber in moderate to high myopia patients: a single-surgeon series

Purpose

To assess the safety and efficacy of implanting implantable phakic copolymer lenses (IPCLs) with peripheral optic holes in the intraocular posterior chamber in Indian patients with moderate to high myopia.

Methods

Seventy-five eyes of 50 patients who underwent IPCL implantation were retrospectively analyzed. Preoperative parameters, such as subjective refraction, anterior chamber depth (measured using a pentacam), and white-to-white diameter were measured. A custom-made IPCL using the aforementioned parameters was then implanted in the sulcus to correct moderate to high myopia. All patients had undergone neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet peripheral iridotomy.

Results

Clinical outcome data were collated retrospectively from the medical case records of the patients. The mean age was 25.36 years (standard deviation [SD]: 3.60 years), and 55.55% of the patients were men. The mean preoperative best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 0.367 logmar units (SD: 0.266, max: 0.0 and min: 1.2). The post-IPCL implantation mean uncorrected visual acuity was 0.225 logmar units (SD: 0.172, max: 0 and min: 0.7), which was significantly superior to the preoperative BCVA (P=<0.0001). Forty-three patients (86%; satisfaction scores of ≥4; scale 1-5) were "highly satisfied" to "extremely satisfied" with the outcome. The mean follow-up period was 1.8 years.

Conclusion

Implantation of the IPCL with peripheral holes in the intraocular posterior chamber resulted in a clinically significant improvement in unaided visual acuity. Long-term follow-up showed optimum stability of vision.
