Abstract
PURPOSE This study aims to evaluate the ocular surface characteristics in children diagnosed with uveitis and explore the association between uveitis and dry eye disease (DED). METHODS We included 84 children, 42 with uveitis and 42 healthy children. We performed the OSDI questionnaire and several ocular surface tests, including osmolarity, NITBUT, Schirmer test, and vital staining. We used Fisher's exact test and Mann-Whitney to compare variables and a binomial logistic regression to determine the factors associated with DED. RESULTS The difference in the prevalence of DED between uveitis (54.8%) and healthy (31%) groups was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Most patients with uveitis had mixed DED, and none of the healthy subjects had a severe form of the disease. There were no statistically significant differences in most of the tear film tests. However, all parameters tended to worsen in the uveitis group, and lipid layer thickness was thinner (p < 0.036). The uveitis group exhibited significantly more symptoms (p < 0.05). In the multivariate logistic regression, uveitis was associated with an odds ratio (OR) of 3.0 (95% CI: 1.07-8.42, p < 0.05) for DED. CONCLUSIONS Our findings demonstrate a significantly higher prevalence of DED in children with uveitis compared to their healthy counterparts. Furthermore, our analysis indicates that the risk of DED in pediatric patients with uveitis is threefold higher than in healthy children. Therefore, it is crucial for clinicians to vigilantly monitor the development of DED in pediatric patients with uveitis and consider the implementation of preventive treatments.

Abstract
Dry eye disease (DED), a multifactorial ocular disease that significantly impacts quality of life, is most commonly reported in adults. This review describes the prevalence, risk factors, diagnosis and management of DED in children. A literature search, conducted from January 2000-December 2022, identified 54 relevant publications. Using similar diagnostic criteria to those reported in adults, namely standardized questionnaires and evaluation of tear film homeostatic signs, the prevalence of DED in children ranged from 5.5% to 23.1 %. There was limited evidence for the influence of ethnicity in children, however some studies reported an effect of sex in older children. Factors independently associated with DED included digital device use, duration of digital device use, outdoor time and urban living, Rates of DED were higher in children with ocular allergy and underlying systemic diseases. Compared with similar studies in adults, the prevalence of a prior DED diagnosis or a diagnosis based on signs and symptoms was lower in children, but symptoms were commonly reported. Treatment options were similar to those in adults, including lifestyle modifications, blinking, management of lid disease and unpreserved lubricants in mild disease with escalating treatment with severity. Management requires careful exploration of symptoms, medical history and the diagnosis and management of ocular comorbidities such as allergy and anterior blepharitis. Appropriately powered population-based studies are required to understand the prevalence of and risk factors for DED in children. Development of age-appropriate thresholds for signs and symptoms of DED would support better diagnosis of disease and understanding of natural history.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate ocular surface changes and meibomian gland scores in patients with oligoarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis. MATERIALS AND METHODS This prospective study was conducted at Ege University School of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology. A total of 34 eyes of 17 patients with oligoarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis and 30 right eyes of 30 age and gender-matched healthy subjects were included. Besides ophthalmic examination Schirmer 1 test, tear film break up time, Oxford staining scale and meibography were performed. RESULTS There was no statistically significant differences between groups in terms of age, mean intraocular pressure, mean Schirmer 1 test value, tear film break up time and Oxford staining score. The median upper and lower eyelid meiboscore were 1 ± 0.60 (IQR = 1), and 0 ± 0.34 (IQR = 0) in Group 1, and they were 1 ± 0.56 (IQR = 0), 1 ± 0.12 (IQR = 1) in Group 2. Also, mean upper and lower meiboscores were statistically similar (p values 0.068 and 0.545, respectively). However, the median total meiboscore was 1 ± 0.42 (IQR = 1) in Group 1 and 1 ± 0.66 (IQR = 1) in Group 2. The difference was statistically significant (p = 0.041). CONCLUSION Aqueous-deficient dry eye is a well-known condition in patients with rheumatologic diseases. However, evaporative dry eye and meibomian glands were not studied earlier. The current study demonstrated that total meiboscores of oligoarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis patients are higher than normal subjects, which indicates a possible evaporative dry eye tendency in this entity.

Abstract
Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is the most common rheumatic disease in children and uveitis is its most important extra-articular manifestation. Evidence-based recommendations are available only to a limited extent and therefore JIA associated uveitis management is mostly based on physicians experience. Consequently, treatment practices differ widely, both nationally and internationally. Therefore, an effort to optimize and publish recommendations for the care of children and young adults with rheumatic diseases was launched in 2012 as part of the international project SHARE (Single Hub and Access Point for Pediatric Rheumatology in Europe) to facilitate clinical practice for paediatricians and (paediatric) rheumatologists. The aim of this work was to translate published international SHARE recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of JIA associated uveitis and to adapt them for use in the Czech and Slovak Republics. International recommendations were developed according to the standard methodology of the European League against Rheumatism (EULAR) by a group of nine experienced paediatric rheumatologists and three experts in ophthalmology. It was based on a systematic literature review and evaluated in the form of an online survey and subsequently discussed using a nominal group technique. Recommendations were accepted if > 80% agreement was reached (including all three ophthalmologists). A total of 22 SHARE recommendations were accepted: 3 on diagnosis, 5 on disease activity assessment, 12 on treatment and 2 on future recommendations. Translation of the original text was updated and modified with data specific to the czech and slovak health care systems and supplemented with a proposal for a protocol of ophthalmological dispensarization of paediatric JIA patients and a treatment algorithm for JIA associated uveitis. Conclusion: The aim of the SHARE initiative is to improve and standardize care for paediatric patients with rheumatic diseases across Europe. Therefore, recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of JIA-associated uveitis have been formulated based on the evidence and agreement of leading European experts in this field.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess the psychometric properties of Chinese versions of the Ocular Comfort Index (OCI), Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) and McMonnies questionnaires. Further, to assess the correlation between questionnaire scores and objective dry eye disease (DED) clinical tests. METHODS Translated versions of the OCI, OSDI and McMonnies questionnaires were completed in a random order by 238 participants with DED. Objective clinical tests included visual acuity (VA), fluorescein tear film break-up time (TBUT), corneal fluorescein staining, Schirmer I testing and meibomian gland grading. Rasch analysis was used to assess questionnaire psychometrics and spearman rank for correlations. RESULTS For the OCI, the person separation was 2.31, item infit and outfit statistics ranged from 0.74-1.14 and 0.75-1.32, respectively, and targeting 1.54 logits. For the OSDI, person separation was 0.94. None of the three subscales provided valid measurements based on Rasch analysis. For the McMonnies questionnaire, person separation was 1.17, item infit and outfit statistics ranged from 0.7 to 1.21 and 0.51-3.49, respectively. There were weak correlations between questionnaire scores and clinical tests. There were weak correlations between OSDI scores and VA, fluorescein TBUT, Schirmer I testing and corneal fluorescein staining. There were weak correlations between McMonnies scores and VA, fluorescein TBUT, Schirmer I testing, and corneal fluorescein staining and meibomian gland grading. CONCLUSIONS The OCI questionnaire was the only questionnaire that provided valid measurement on the basis of Rasch analysis, although slight multidimensionality was found. There were weak correlations between OCI scores and fluorescein TBUT, Schirmer I testing, and corneal fluorescein staining. Due to this paradoxical disconnect between symptoms and signs and the repeatability of tests, the use of both subjective and objective markers in the clinical management of patients or as endpoints in clinical trials would appear prudent.

Abstract
Purpose To study the frequency and severity of dry eye in patients with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) and its relation to disease activity. Patients and Methods Evaluation for dry eye was done in 40 patients with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis referred for ocular assessment in the Ophthalmology Clinics, Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University. They were 28 girls and 12 boys with age range of 7–12 years. Medical history, clinical examination, and full ophthalmologic evaluation were performed for each patient. The dry eye tests included tear film break-up time, Schirmer-1 test, and corneal fluorescein staining. Dry eye severity grading was used. Twenty healthy, age- and sex-matched children were assessed for dry eye as a control group. Results Thirty patients (75%) showed findings consistent with the diagnosis of dry eye. Twenty patients (50%) showed first-degree dryness, 8 (20%) showed second-degree, and 2 (5%) showed third-degree. The score of dry eye severity was significantly lower in remission compared to disease activity. Multiregression analysis showed the only factor affecting dry eye parameters was the duration of illness. Conclusions Dry eye is a common incident in children with JRA and should be screened for in all patients with this disease. Severity of eye dryness is highly correlated with the disease activity.
