Abstract
PURPOSE To compare central corneal thickness (CCT) measured with optical coherence tomography (OCT) using an automatic algorithm (A-OCT) vs. manual measurements (M-OCT) with respect to the gold standard ultrasound pachymetry (USP). METHODS CCT measurements were performed on both eyes of 28 healthy subjects at four times of the day. A-OCT used an automatic software analysis of the corneal image, M-OCT was performed by two operators by setting a digital calliper on the corneal borders, and USP was performed after corneal anesthesia. Measurements were compared using a three-way repeated measures ANOVA. Bland-Altman plots were used to evaluate the agreement between OCT measurements and USP. RESULTS Both A-OCT and M-OCT significantly underestimated the USP measures, with the mean difference, i.e., the systematic error, being larger for A-OCT (- 19.0 µm) than for M-OCT (- 6.5 µm). Good reproducibility between the two operators was observed. Bland-Altman plots showed that both OCT methods suffered from proportional errors, which were not affected by time and eye. CONCLUSIONS Measuring CCT with OCT yielded lower values than USP. Therefore, clinicians should be aware that corneal thickness values may be influenced by the measurement method and that the various devices should not be used interchangeably in following up a given patient. Intriguingly, M-OCT had less systematic error than A-OCT, an important outcome that clinicians should consider when deciding to use an OCT device.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare and analyze the interchangeability in measuring central corneal thickness (CCT) using ultrasonic pachymetry (USP, PACHMATE 2, DGH, Inc, Exton, PA, USA), non-contact specular microscopy (NCSM, CEM-530, Nidek CO, LTD, Gamagori, Japan) and a high-resolution Scheimpflug Camera (Pentacam HR, OCULUS, Wetzlar, Germany). METHODS An observational, cross-sectional study was performed recruiting 216 volunteers, for a sample size of 216 eyes with no ocular abnormalities other than refractive errors. All subjects underwent pachymetric measurements obtained by USP, NCSM and Pentacam HR. Examinations were performed by the same examiner with USP always following the noncontact examinations. RESULTS The mean CCT (± SD) was 560.30 ± 38.80 μm, 556.76 ± 36.83 μm and 547.31 ± 35.28 μm for USP, NCSM and Pentacam HR, respectively. The Bland-Altman analysis showed that the highest concordance was found between USP and NCSM, with differences between - 13.18 μm and 20.26 μm. For the differences between measurements obtained with Pentacam HR and USP, the differences at Bland-Altman plot were between - 28.25 and 13.57 μm. The lowest concordance was found for the CCT values measured with Pentacam HR and NCSM, with differences between - 25.67 and 6.86 μm. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) between all pairs of measurements was between 0.979 and 0.987, suggesting that the mean measurements were strongly correlated. CONCLUSION Measurements obtained with all three devices had high correlation. USP and NCSM were found in good agreement and high concordance, too. The above results indicate that these two devices are interchangeable in clinical practice. Pentacam HR may be a useful alternative for measuring CCT; however, it significantly underestimates CCT and cannot be used interchangeably with the other devices that we studied.

Abstract
Objectives: To assess the central corneal thickness (CCT) with 5 different devices, evaluate the repeatability of the devices, and determine the possible relationship between thickness values and sex. Materials and Methods: The study included 308 eyes of 154 patients (76 women, 78 men) between the ages of 18-30 who presented to the Ophthalmology Clinic of Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University Training and Research Hospital. Autorefractor (Topcon, Japan), ultrasound pachymetry (UP) (Ceniscan, USA), high-resolution Pentacam (Oculus, USA), anterior segment-optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) (Optovue, USA), and Spectralis AS-OCT (Heidelberg, Germany) measurements were assessed. Results: The mean age of the study participants was 23.2±0.2 years and the mean CCT was 540±14.1 μm, with no statistically significant difference in CCT between sexes (p>0.05). Mean CCT values were 557.0±26.7 μm with the autorefractor, 543.6±32.9 μm with UP, 533.8±30.2 μm with the Oculus Pentacam, 519.8±30.1 μm with Optovue AS-OCT, and 547.5±31.6 μm with Heidelberg AS-OCT. Pairwise comparisons between devices showed that the Optovue AS-OCT gave significantly lower CCT measurements than the autorefractor and Heidelberg AS-OCT device (p=0.027 and p=0.033, respectively). The coefficient of repeatability for autorefractor, UP, high-resolution Pentacam, Optovue AS-OCT, and Heidelberg AS-OCT CCT measurements were 1.51%, 2.46%, 3.72%, 2.57%, and 3.34%, respectively. Conclusion: Measurements made with five different devices showed that CCT was comparable and clinically usable. However, it was determined that the Optovue AS-OCT showed lower CCT values compare to other devices. When compared in terms of repeatability, it was found to be lower in the Pentacam than other devices.

Abstract
Background Central Corneal Thickness (CCT) measurement is useful in the management of glaucoma, ocular hypertension, corneal lesions and kerato-refractive surgeries. The study aims to compare the CCT measurements between Ultrasound Sonography (USS) and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), to analyze correlation and agreement between these instruments as well as repeatability of each instrument. Methodology A cross sectional comparative study carried in 100 eyes of 50 patients attending Rachel Eye Center in Abuja from January to March 2021. The CCT were taken using the USS and OCT. CCT was measured using the Pachscan ultrasound and the Optovue machine utilised for the OCT technique. Data was analysed using SPSS version 20 using Paired Sample t Test, Pearson's correlation, Interclass Correlation and Bland Altman Methods. Results Patients were aged between 18 and 79 (mean age of 39.1), 72 males and 28 females. The mean CCT was 537.36 ±33.26 and 510.94 ±33.13 for USS and OCT respectively with a mean difference of (26.42±9.53 p<0.001). There was a very strong correlation of the 2 sets of measurement r = 0.997 p<0.001. There was a high average mean intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.843 between the two instruments and this was excellent (0.961) within the 95 percentile upper limit but poor in the (0.096) lower limit. There was a high correlation and no statistical significant difference in the comparing repeated mean USS and OCT measurements. There was an excellent average mean Intraclass Correlation Coefficient of 0.999/0.997 for the repeated OCT and USS values and this was found to be excellent(0.999/0.998) within the 95 percentile upper limit and (0.997/0.994)lower limit respectively. Conclusion We find that measurements of CCT using the Pachscan ultrasound and the Optovue OCT correlate well, but the mean Pachscan measures were significantly higher than Optovue measures.

Abstract
We retrospectively compared the central corneal thickness (CCT) obtained by ultrasound pachymetry (USP; SP-3000, Tomey Corp., Nagoya, Japan), non-contact tonopachy (TP) (NT-530P, Nidek Co., Ltd., Gamagori, Japan), Pentacam HR (OCULUS Inc., Wetzlar, Germany), and RTVue optical coherence tomography (OCT) (Optovue Inc., Fremont, CA, USA) in 78 eyes of 78 healthy subjects with myopia. Agreement between the measurement methods was evaluated using 95% confidence intervals for the limits of agreement (LoA). The mean CCT values were 546.9 ± 34.7, 548.1 ± 33.5, 559.2 ± 34.0, and 547.2 ± 34.8 μm for USP, non-contact TP, Pentacam, and RTVue, respectively. The thickest and the thinnest mean CCT values corresponded to those obtained by Pentacam HR and USP, respectively. Plots of the differences against the means showed the best agreement between USP and RTVue (LoA, 10.14-10.70 μm), while the largest discrepancy was observed between RTVue and Pentacam systems (LoA, -25.47-1.44 μm). Our data showed that CCT measurements using these 4 instruments were well correlated. However, the results from Pentacam differed significantly from those of the other instruments.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare central corneal thickness (CCT) measurements by scanning slit topography (SST), infrared pachymetry (IRP), and ultrasound pachymetry (USP), and their agreement in normal and post-laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) eyes. METHODS Sixty normal and 35 post-LASIK subjects were recruited. Only one eye from each subject was analyzed. Non-contact pachymetry was performed first, and the order for SST (Orbscan IIz) and IRP (Tonoref III) was randomized for each patient, to be followed by contact USP (Echoscan US-4000). Pearson's correlation, paired t test, and Bland-Altman plots were used to investigate association, difference, and agreement among different instruments respectively. RESULTS The measurements obtained with the instruments were highly correlated. Compared to CCT determined by USP (CCTUSP), CCT determined by SST (after correction with acoustic factor) (CCTSSTC) was thicker by 7 µm in normal eyes (P < 0.001). There was no significant difference between CCTSSTC and CCTUSP (P = 0.128), but a thickness-dependent deviation in post-LASIK eyes (P = 0.003). The CCT determined by IRP (CCTIRP) was thicker than CCTUSP in normal (P < 0.001) and post-LASIK eyes (P < 0.001) and demonstrated proportional overestimation with thinner corneas, with less predictable ultrasonic equivalent corneal thickness in normal eyes. Conversely, CCTIRP significantly underestimated CCT compared to CCTSST and showed increasing underestimation with thinner corneas in both normal and post-LASIK eyes (both P < 0.001). CONCLUSION Central corneal thickness determined by SST, IRP and USP were not interchangeable or interconvertible, probably attributed to difference in methodologies. Compensation with algorithms may improve agreements amongst instruments.

Abstract
PURPOSE Central corneal thickness (CCT) is a key indicator of the corneal health status and is therefore of clinical importance. The aim of the present study was to determine the agreement between Scheimpflug photography (SP) and optical low-coherence reflectometry (OLCR) systems in measuring the CCT in children. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, the samples were selected from Shahroud schoolchildren using cluster sampling. The samples then underwent optometric examinations, including the measurement of visual acuity and refraction. CCT measurements were done by the SP and OLCR systems between 8 am and 4 pm. To evaluate the agreement between these devices, 95% limits of agreement (LoA) and interclass correlation coefficient (ICC) were reported. RESULTS After applying the exclusion criteria, 4890 right eyes (53.2% male) were analyzed. The mean age of the students was 9.22 ± 1.72 years (range: 6-12 years). The mean CCT by the SP and OLCR systems was 555.30 ± 34.15 and 550.23 ± 35.11 µm, respectively. The 95% LoA between the two devices was -19.81 to 9.66 µm, and the ICC was 0.983. The CCT difference between the SP and OLCR systems was 5.61 µm in boys and 3.36 µm in girls. The CCT difference between the two devices was 6.41 µm in 6-year-old and 3.54 µm in 12-year-old children. The 95% LoA was -17.96 to 9.58 µm and -18.89 to 8.47 µm and the ICC was 0.987 and 0.984 in myopic and hyperopic subjects, respectively. CONCLUSION The results of this study showed a high agreement between OLCR and SP measurements of CCT in children.

Abstract
AIM: This study aimed to compare the central corneal thickness (CCT) measurements using Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and TMS-5 topographer with that taken with the gold standard digital Ultrasonic pachymeter (USP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 61 subjects (122 eyes) were prospectively and consecutively studied in a period from June 2016 to June 2017 at Sudan Eye Centre (SEC), Khartoum, Sudan. Besides the visual and refractive data, measurements of CCT were taken using OCT, TMS-5 and USP. Data analyzed using SPSS software for windows (IBM SPSS 20, IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). RESULTS: A statistically significant differences in mean CCT was detected between the three instruments (P < 0.001). USP was found to measure the CCT 29μm thicker than OCT and 22μm thicker than TMS-5 topographer. A significant difference was also found between OCT and TMS-5. OCT found to give the lower values of CCT compared to both USP and TMS-5 topographer. Further analysis showed that the three procedures were significantly and strongly correlated to each other (USP vs OCT, r = 0.77), (USP vs TMS-5, r = 0.78) and (OCT vs TMS-5, r = 0.80). CONCLUSION: Mean central corneal thicknesses (CCT) were comparable among OCT, TMS-5 topographer and the gold standard USP. However, there is a reproducible systematic difference between CCT measurements taken with the three devices. It is important to note in clinical practice, that measurements acquired by these three modalities are not directly interchangeable.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare the repeatability and agreement of central corneal thickness (CCT) measurements by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT), corneal topography (CT) with a combined Scheimpflug-Placido system, optical biometry (OB), specular microscopy (SM), and ultrasound pachymetry (UP). METHODS A single observer measured CCT twice in 150 eyes of 150 subjects with each of five devices: Nidek RS-3000 Advance OCT, CSO Sirius combined Scheimpflug-Placido disc system CT, Nidek AL-Scan partial coherence interferometry-based OB, Tomey EM-3000 SM, and Reichert iPac ultrasonic pachymeter. Pachymetry values corrected by the SM device software were also recorded. Levels of agreement between devices were evaluated by Bland-Altman plots with 95% limits of agreement, and repeatability for each device was analysed with intraclass correlation coefficients. RESULTS The mean CCTs measured by OCT, CT, OB, SM, corrected SM, and UP were 544.60 ± 29.56, 536.19 ± 32.14, 528.29 ± 29.45, 524.88 ± 32.38, 537.88 ± 32.38, and 545.29 ± 30.75 μm, respectively. Mean CCT differed significantly between the devices (p < 0.05) apart from between OCT and UP, and between CT and corrected SM. Mean paired differences between devices ranged between 0.68 and 20.41 μm. Repeatability with all devices was excellent (> 0.99). The range of limits of agreement was the least between OCT and UP. CONCLUSIONS Different CCT measurement techniques produce quite different results, so CCT evaluation and follow-up should be performed using the same device or devices with close compatibility.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare and analyze the interchangeability of three measuring systems, each based on a different technique, for central corneal thickness (CCT) analysis. METHODS CCT measurements were measured using optical coherence tomography (OCT), non-contact specular microscopy (NCSM), and ultrasonic pachymetry (USP) in 60 eyes of 60 healthy patients with a mean age of 66.5±15.0 years and a mean spherical equivalent of 0.43±1.14 D. Analysis of variations in measurement concordance and correlation among the three different methods were performed. Comparison of CCT measurements were done using Bland-Altman plots (with bias and 95% confidence intervals), intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), and paired t-student analysis. RESULTS Mean CCT values were: 549.20±26.91μm for USP (range 503-618μm), 514.20±27.49μm for NCSM (range 456-586μm) and 542.80±25.56μm for OCT (range 486-605μm). CCT values obtained with NCMS were significantly lower than those obtained with OCT and USP methods. NCMS CCT value was 36.08±10.72μm lower than USP value (p<0.05), and NCMS CCT value was 7.88±8.86μm lower than OCT value (p<0.05). ICC between USP-NCSM pair was 0.488 and 0.909 between USP-OCT pair. CONCLUSION OCT and UPS offered highly comparable results, whereas NCSM offered lower mean CCT values compared to the other two methods. Therefore, NCSM should not be considered a reliable method for measuring CCT and should rather be considered for assessing longitudinal changes in the same patient.

Abstract
Objectives: To investigate corneal, scleral, choroidal, and foveal thicknesses in female patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and compare them with healthy subjects. Materials and Methods: This prospective study included consecutive female patients diagnosed with RA and healthy subjects. Corneal, scleral, choroidal, and retinal (foveal) thicknesses were obtained by using optical coherence tomography and a comparison was performed between groups for all outcome measures. Results: Thirty-six eyes of 36 female patients diagnosed with RA (group 1) and 36 eyes of 36 healthy female volunteers (group 2) were included. Mean corneal, scleral, choroidal thicknesses and retinal thickness at the fovea of group 1 were 543.3±33.7 µm, 343.7±42.2 µm, 214.6±50, and 213.5±18.9 µm, respectively; in group 2, these values were 549.9±29.6 μm, 420.9±42.4 μm, 206.4±41.9 μm, and 222±15.5 μm, respectively. The comparison between group 1 and 2 with respect to corneal, choroidal, and foveal thicknesses did not reveal statistical significant differences (p>0.05). On the contrary, there was a statistically significant difference with respect to scleral thickness between the groups, with the RA patients demonstrating a thinner scleral layer (p<0.001). Conclusion: Female patients with RA seem to demonstrate statistically significant scleral thinning when compared with healthy subjects, while there was no difference concerning corneal, choroidal, and foveal thickness.

Role of percent peripheral tissue ablated on refractive outcomes following hyperopic LASIK. PLoS One 2017; 12:e0170559. [PMID: 28151939 PMCID: PMC5289449 DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0170559] [Citation(s) in RCA: 6] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.9] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 06/13/2016] [Accepted: 01/06/2017] [Indexed: 11/19/2022] Open
Abstract
Objectives To determine the effect of hyperopic laser in situ keratomileusis (H-LASIK) on corneal integrity, by investigating relationships between proportionate corneal tissue ablated and refractive outcomes at 3 months. Methods 18 eyes of 18 subjects treated with H-LASIK by Technolas 217c Excimer Laser were included in the study. Orbscan II Topography System was used to determine corneal volume and pachymetry 3mm temporally (3T). The volume of corneal tissue ablated was determined from the laser nomogram. Univariate associations between age, treatment, corneal volume, overall proportion of tissue removed, proportion of tissue removed at 3T, residual bed thickness at 3T and refractive outcomes 3 months post-LASIK were examined and independent factors associated with refractive outcomes determined using linear regression models. Results At 3 months post-LASIK, the mean difference to expected refractive outcome was -0.20 ± 0.64 (Range -2.00 to +1.00). In univariate analysis, difference to expected refractive outcome was associated with proportion of tissue removed at 3T (P<0.01, r = -0.605) and total number of pulses (P< 0.05, r = -0.574). In multivariable analysis, difference to expected refractive outcome was associated with the proportion of tissue removed at 3T only. Conclusion Subjects undergoing H-LASIK, may present as either over or under-corrected at 3 months. The proportion of tissue removed at 3T was the single significant determinant of this outcome, suggesting unexpected biomechanical alterations resulting in corneal steepening. Future hyperopic LASIK procedures could consider proportionate volume of corneal tissue removed at 3T in addition to laser nomograms to achieve improved refractive outcomes.

Graefes Arch Clin Exp Ophthalmol 2016; 255:387-392. Abstract
PURPOSE To compare specular microscopy (Topcon SP-3000P, Topcon Corporation, Tokyo, Japan) and ultrasound (US) technology when evaluating central corneal thickness (CCT) prior to and after phacoemulsification. METHODS Corneal edema was assessed in phacoemulsification patients due to senile cataract by measuring CCT preoperatively and 1 day, 1 month, and 3 months postoperatively. Bland-Altman analysis was performed to assess interchangeability between pachymetry techniques for each visit. Repeated measures analysis of variance was performed to evaluate variation in CCT agreement depending on the degree of corneal edema. RESULTS One hundred and eighteen patients aged 73.9 ± 10.1 years were recruited. Topcon SP-3000P provided significant (p < 0.0001) lower CCT values than US with and without induced corneal edema. Mean differences between CCT techniques for baseline, 1 day, 1 month and 3 months after cataract surgery were -28.9 ± 22.6, -30.5 ± 41.4, -32.3 ± 16.2 and -33.0 ± 16.9 μm, respectively. The systematic bias observed was not significantly different among the 4 visits (p = 0.59). The estimated limits of agreement (based on 1.96 standard deviation) were substantial, being 90.5, 165.8, 64.9 and 67.5 um at baseline, 1 day and 1 and 3 months. CONCLUSIONS Topcon SP-3000P provides similar systematic bias in comparison with US technique for CCT measurements regardless of the degree of corneal edema after phacoemulsification, which should be reduced after applying a constant calibration adjustment of ∼30 μm. However, interchangeability between techniques may be still limited by the notable random measurement error.

In vivo cross-sectional imaging of the phonating larynx using long-range Doppler optical coherence tomography. Sci Rep 2016; 6:22792. Abstract
Diagnosis and treatment of vocal fold lesions has been a long-evolving science for the otolaryngologist. Contemporary practice requires biopsy of a glottal lesion in the operating room under general anesthesia for diagnosis. Current in-office technology is limited to visualizing the surface of the vocal folds with fiber-optic or rigid endoscopy and using stroboscopic or high-speed video to infer information about submucosal processes. Previous efforts using optical coherence tomography (OCT) have been limited by small working distances and imaging ranges. Here we report the first full field, high-speed, and long-range OCT images of awake patients’ vocal folds as well as cross-sectional video and Doppler analysis of their vocal fold motions during phonation. These vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser source (VCSEL) OCT images offer depth resolved, high-resolution, high-speed, and panoramic images of both the true and false vocal folds. This technology has the potential to revolutionize in-office imaging of the larynx.

Evaluation of Central Corneal Thickness Using Corneal Dynamic Scheimpflug Analyzer Corvis ST and Comparison with Pentacam Rotating Scheimpflug System and Ultrasound Pachymetry in Normal Eyes. J Ophthalmol 2015; 2015:767012. [PMID: 26697213 PMCID: PMC4678087 DOI: 10.1155/2015/767012] [Citation(s) in RCA: 13] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.4] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 10/07/2015] [Accepted: 11/16/2015] [Indexed: 11/25/2022] Open
Abstract
Purpose. To assess the repeatability and reproducibility of central corneal thickness (CCT) measurements by corneal dynamic Scheimpflug analyzer Corvis ST in normal eyes and compare the agreement with Pentacam rotating Scheimpflug System and ultrasound pachymetry. Methods. 84 right eyes underwent Corvis ST measurements performed by two operators. The test-retest repeatability (TRT), within-subject coefficient of variation (CoV), and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) were used to evaluate the intraoperator repeatability and interoperator reproducibility. CCT measurements also were obtained from Pentacam and ultrasound pachymetry by the first operator. The agreement between the three devices was evaluated with 95% limits of agreement (LoA) and Bland-Altman plots. Results. Corvis ST showed high repeatability as indicated by TRT ≤ 13.0 μm, CoV < 0.9%, and ICC > 0.97. The interoperator reproducibility was also excellent. The CoV was <0.9%, and ICC was >0.97. Corvis ST showed significantly lower values than Pentacam and ultrasound pachymetry (P < 0.001). The 95% LoA between Corvis ST and Pentacam or ultrasound pachymetry were −15.8 to 9.5 μm and −27.9 to 12.3 μm, respectively. Conclusions. Corvis ST showed excellent repeatability and interoperator reproducibility of CCT measurements in normal eyes. Corvis ST is interchangeable with Pentacam but not with ultrasound pachymetry.
