Factors Influencing Participation Of Healthy Volunteers In Clinical Trials: Findings From A Cross-Sectional Study In Delhi, North India

Knowledge and Attitude towards Clinical Trials among General Population of Northern Saudi Arabia during COVID-19 Era: A Cross-Sectional Study

Recruiting and retaining sufficient participants is one of the biggest challenges researchers face while conducting clinical trials (CTs). This is due to the fact of misconceptions and insufficient knowledge concerning CTs among the public. The present cross-sectional study was conducted from April 2021 to May 2022. We evaluated knowledge and attitude among 480 participants using a pretested Arabic questionnaire. The correlation between knowledge and attitude score was tested through Spearman's correlation test, and the logistic regression test evaluated the associated factors for knowledge and attitude. Of the studied participants, 63.5% were male and belonged to the age group less than 30 years (39.6%). Nearly two-thirds (64.6%) of them had never heard of CT. More than half of the participants had poor knowledge (57.1%) and attitude (73.5%) towards CTs. Participants' knowledge scores were significantly associated with education level (p = 0.031) and previous participation in health-related research (p = 0.007). Attitude scores were significantly related to marital status (p = 0.035) and the presence of chronic diseases (p = 0.008). Furthermore, we found a significant positive correlation between knowledge and attitude scores (p < 0.001, Spearman's rho = 0.329). The present study revealed that most of the study population had poor knowledge and moderate attitudes towards CT. Targeted health education programs at different public places are recommended to improve the public's knowledge of the importance of CT participation. In addition, exploratory and mixed-methods surveys in other regions of KSA is required to recognize the region-specific health education needs.

Evaluation of satisfaction and reasons for participation in a Covid-19 vaccine clinical trial: A single-centre, observational study

Background In May 2020, WHO recognized the role of extensive immunization for interrupting the transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The development of such vaccines in clinical trials relies upon participants who are expected to be vested in the research process. Assessment of participant factors such as motivation and satisfaction are hence important to gauge perspective and ensure successful conduct and completion of these trials. Methods We administered a validated three-domain questionnaire to and documented the binary categorical responses (yes/no) of participants (after informed consent) who had taken both doses of COVOVAX™ in a phase 3 trial at our institute. Association of the dependent variables (participant responses) with the independent variables (participant demographics and socioeconomic strata) was computed using Chi-square test at 5% significance. In case of a significant association, Bonferroni post-hoc test was applied for multiple comparisons. Results Of the 78 participants who were administered the questionnaire, two-thirds were highly satisfied with their experience at our site. Gaining access to a new vaccine was a primary motivation overall (74%) and also in graduates (p=0.03) and middle-class population (p=0.002), whereas the lower-middle class population (p<0.0001) and those educated till secondary school (p=0.003) took part due to the long wait for government-approved vaccines. Conclusion Participants in a Covid-19 vaccine trial at Mumbai were largely satisfied with the care given to them though altruism did not feature as a primary reason for participation.

Clinical trials: Predictors of knowledge and attitudes towards participation

AIMS

Clinical trials (CTs) are critical to advancing of patient care. Understanding the public's knowledge and the attitudes towards participating in CTs is important for their successful implication. In Jordan this data are currently not available. The present study aimed to explore the knowledge, attitude and perception of Jordanians towards CTs participation.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted on 1216 Jordanians recruited from public hospitals and pharmaceutical research centres.

RESULTS

About 20.5% of the respondents have previously participated in a CT. About 68.3% and 50.1% had good knowledge and positive attitude towards CTs, respectively. Good knowledge was associated with male gender (OR = 1.696, 95% CI = 1.284-0.240, P < .001), higher education (OR = 1.433, 95% CI = 1.107-1.856, P = .006) and healthy condition (OR = 1.822, 95% CI = 1.234-2.690, P = .003); while older age was associated with a poor knowledge (OR = 0.985, 95% CI = 0.972-0.998, P = .026). Female gender (OR = 1.817, 95% CI = 1.406-2.349, P < .001), higher education (OR = 1.294, 95% CI = 1.017-1.646, P = .036) and previous participation (OR = 1.919, 95% CI = 1.388-2.653, P < .001) were factors predicting the positive attitudes. A very weak positive correlation was found between knowledge and attitude (Spearman's r = 0.074, P = .01). Regarding perceptions, most of the respondents (85.3%) perceive that CTs are conducted in an ethical manner in Jordan, only 52.9% however feel comfortable towards participation. A moderate positive correlation was found between knowledge and perception (Spearman's r = 0.275, P < .001). Taking part in a CT significantly affect knowledge, attitudes and perceptions.

CONCLUSIONS

This study revealed important insights regarding knowledge, attitudes and perception of Jordanians towards CTs. Educational interventions can improve awareness of the ethical standards under which CTs are conducted affecting the perception to participate. Promotion of CTs among patients and healthy individuals is needed to increase participation.
