Abstract
Aims The aim of this study was to explore the educational expectations and experiences of surgical patients. Design Prospective, longitudinal, descriptive and two‐centre study. Data were collected with questionnaires at the hospital and 6 weeks and 6 months postsurgery. Methods Patients undergoing elective surgery and hospitalized overnight from January to July 2016 answered questions about the content of received pre‐operative and pre‐discharge education, topics they wanted more information on, sources of information, satisfaction with and usefulness of the information and if their recovery was as expected. Results Patients (N = 697, 49% male, mean age 64.1 [SD 12.6] years) perceived the provided education as useful and satisfactory but less so after discharge. Most common topics which they expected more education about were postoperative complications, pain management, fatigue, lack of stamina and expected recovery time. Most patients received information through face‐to‐face teaching (79.7%) and in writing (78.4%). Expectations on recovery were related to patients' satisfaction with the education and how useful they evaluated it.

Abstract
Purpose In patient education, there is a need for valid and reliable instruments to assess and tailor empowering educational activities. In this study, we summarize the process of producing two parallel instruments for analyzing hospital patients’ expectations (Expected Knowledge of Hospital Patients, EKhp) and received knowledge (Received Knowledge of Hospital Patients, RKhp) and evaluate the psychometrics of the instruments based on international data. In the instruments, six elements of empowering knowledge are included (bio-physiological, functional, experiential, ethical, social, and financial). Patients and Methods The original Finnish versions of EKhp and RKhp were tested for the first time in 2003, after which they have been used in several national studies. For international purposes, the instruments were first translated into English, then to languages of the seven participating European countries, using double-checking procedure in each one, and subsequently evaluated and confirmed by local researchers and language experts. International data collection was performed in 2009–2012 with a total sample of 1,595 orthopedic patients. Orthopedic patients were selected due to the increase in their numbers, and need for educational activities. Here we report the psychometrics of the instruments for potential international use and future development. Results Content validities were confirmed by each participating country. Confirmatory factor analyses supported the original theoretical, six-dimensional structure of the instruments. For some subscales, however, there is a need for further clarification. The summative factors, based on the dimensions, have a satisfactory internal consistency. The results support the use of the instruments in patient education in orthopedic nursing, and preferably also in other fields of surgical nursing care. Conclusion EKhp and RKhp have potential for international use in the evaluation of empowering patient education. In the future, testing of the structure is needed, and validation in other fields of clinical care besides surgical nursing is especially warranted.

Abstract
Aim To describe the associations between health literacy, social support and self‐care behaviours in older adults with heart failure. Design A cross‐sectional descriptive study. Methods A total of 252 older adults were recruited from a tertiary care hospital from September 2018–February 2019. Structured questionnaires and medical record reviews were used for data collection. Two steps of hierarchical regression analysis were employed to determine the predictors of self‐care behaviours. Results Health literacy (β = 0.27, p < .001) and social support (β = 0.32, p < .001) were significant determinants of self‐care behaviours in older adults with heart failure. Together, they explained 22% of the variance in self‐care behaviours. Conclusion Health literacy and perceived social support were positively associated with self‐care behaviours among older heart failure patients. Our findings can help health professionals develop heart failure self‐care interventions to enhance health literacy skills and social support for older adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the educational expectations and experiences of patients with heart failure in relation to device implantation. METHODS In this longitudinal study, patients at six Swedish and Icelandic hospitals answered instruments about their knowledge expectations, before the device implantation, and about the knowledge they had received at two weeks, six months and 12 months after the procedure. Predictors for fulfillment of knowledge expectations were assessed with linear mixed model analysis. RESULTS Patients (N = 133, mean age 69.8 (±9.7) years, 80 % men) had high knowledge expectations, which for 83 % of them were unfulfilled. Predictors for fulfillment of knowledge expectations were access to knowledge from healthcare professionals (β 0.74, 95 % CI: 0.42-1.10), educational level (β -0.30, 95 % CI: -0.52 to -0.07) and knowledge expectations (β -1.03, 95 % CI: -1.30 to -0.80). Healthcare professionals were the main information source (89 %), 74 % of patients received written information, and 19 % had used the Internet. CONCLUSIONS Patients receive less knowledge than they expect, and individual factors and communication with healthcare professionals are related to their experience. Face-to-face is the most common method of delivering education. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Healthcare professionals should assess patients' expectations for information and consider implementing more diversity in their educational practices.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Self-care is an important element in the comprehensive management of patients with heart failure. The European Heart Failure Self-Care Behaviour Scale (EHFScBS) was developed and tested to measure behaviours performed by the heart failure patients to maintain life, healthy functioning, and wellbeing. AIMS The purpose of this review was to evaluate the importance of factors associated with heart failure self-care behaviours as measured by the EHFScBS. METHODS Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis guidelines were used to search major health databases (PubMed, Scopus and ScienceDirect). Obtained associating factors of heart failure self-care were qualitatively synthesised and the association levels of most commonly addressed factors were further explored. RESULTS We identified 30 studies that were included in the review; a diverse range of personal and environmental factors associated with self-care behaviours in heart failure patients were identified. Age, health-related quality of life, gender, education, New York Heart Association class, depressive symptoms and left ventricular ejection fraction were most often correlated with the EHFScBS score. Consistent evidence for the relationship between self-care behaviours and depression was found, while their association with New York Heart Association class and health-related quality of life was non-significant in most of the studies. Associations with other factors were shown to be inconsistent or need to be further investigated as they were only addressed in single studies. CONCLUSION A sufficient body of evidence is available only for a few factors related to heart failure self-care measured by the EHFScBS and indicates their limited impact on patient heart failure self-care. The study highlights the need for further exploration of relationships that would offer a more comprehensive understanding of associating factors.

Abstract
Introduction: Changes in the modern medical science caused significant reduction of mortality and every day increase of the elderly in the world. According to prevalence of physical and mental problems in elderly, it is necessary to take some actions. Self care in one of the best way to improve elderly health and life satisfaction that seems have a relation to self-esteem. Methods: This descriptive and analytical study was performed on 180 elderly in rural areas of the Sari city. Elderly selected by multi-stage randomize sampling method. Data were gathered by using standard questionnaires of self-care and Rosenberg self-esteem. Data were analyzed by Spearman and Pearson’s correlation using SPSS software (V16). Findings: The mean±SD of the ages of the elderly were 66.85±7.661. The score of self-care varies between 99 to 155 and most of them (66.7%) had good level of self-care. Also, most of elderly (52.2%) had high level of self-esteem. Also there was a significant relationship, between self-care and self-esteem (P<0.001, r=0.426). Conclusion: According to significant relationship between self-care and self-esteem of elderly, by the planning for improving the self care of elderly, can increase their health and significantly reduce from physical and mental complications.
