Abstract
OBJECTIVE Knowledge about voice prosthesis microbial colonization is vital in laryngectomized patients' quality of life (QoL). Herein, we aimed to explore the relationship between oral microbial patterns, demographic variables and voice prosthesis performance. METHODS Thirty laryngectomy patients were assessed for microbial colonization in their voice prostheses and oral cavities. Factors like age, proton pump inhibitor (PPI) usage, and alcohol consumption were considered. RESULTS Participants' average age was 74.20 ± 7.31 years, with a majority on PPIs. Staphylococcus aureus was the most common bacterium in prostheses (53 %), followed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (27 %). Candida albicans was the primary fungal colonizer (67 %). A statistically significant moderate correlation was found between fungal species before and after oral rinsing (p = 0.035, Phi=0.588, Cramer's V = 0.416). Voice prosthesis and oral cavity microbiota profiles showed significant concordance (kappa=0.315, p < 0.004). Among subgroup analyses, bacterial patterns of colonization did not significantly influence VHI (p = 0.9555), VrQoL (p = 0.6610), or SF-36 (p = 0.509) scores. Conversely, fungal patterns of VP colonization significantly impacted subjective voice scores, with Candida krusei demonstrating better VHI (35.25 ± 3.63 vs. 44.54 ± 6.33; p = 0.008), VrQoL (7.13 ± 1.69 vs. 10.73 ± 2.00; p = 0.001), and SF-36 (69.36 ± 7.09 vs. 76.50 ± 7.73; p = 0.051) scores compared to C. albicans. CONCLUSIONS There was a significant correlation between the oral microbiota and voice prosthesis colonization. These insights can inform improved care strategies for voice prostheses, enhancing patient outcomes.

Abstract
(1) Background: The present systematic study aimed to assess whether using esophageal speech (ES) as a method of vocal rehabilitation in patients after total laryngectomy enhances their quality of life (QoL) and vocal functionality based on patients' reports. (2) Methods: Data collection was conducted from PubMed, Google Scholar, and Speech Bite, and the PRISMA Flow Diagram tool was used to record different stages of the literature search process. In the review, nine studies were included, while a bias check was carried out using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) checklists. Survey analysis incorporated quantitative and qualitative data, including standardized questionnaires and audio analyses. (3) Results: A technique's effectiveness depends on the method's functionality and the patient's abilities. Furthermore, the findings revealed that ES use unexpectedly affects quality of life regarding patients. While statistical analysis of the studies showed that some patients reported improvement in quality of life and vocal functionality, others faced challenges such as difficulty in learning the technique, long-term intervention, and unsatisfactory phonetic performance. Some studies observed quantitative measures, such as improved Voice Impairment Index (VHI) scores and Voice-Related Quality of Life (V-RQOL) scores. However, results were not uniformly positive across studies, with a subset of patients reporting minimal improvement. (4) Conclusions: The limited literature on the effect of ES on patients' QoL appears to influence the results in different ways. However, research data support that patients' communication and psychological state seem to improve significantly compared to patients who have not been rehabilitated. The final assessment of the technique's effectiveness on quality of life must depend on many factors.

Abstract
Background: The aim of our multicenter retrospective study was to evaluate the long-term complications associated with primary and secondary tracheoesophageal puncture (TEP) in patients who underwent total laryngectomy (TL) for laryngeal cancer and were subsequently rehabilitated to phonatory function with tracheoesophageal speech (TES). Materials and Methods: To evaluate the long-term outcomes and complications of TEP, the following data were collected: mean time of prosthesis replacement, mean time of onset of complications, type of complications, and type of failure. Results: Complications occurred in 18 out of 46 patients (39.2%) with primary TEP and in 10 out of 30 patients (33.4%) with secondary TEP, out of a total of 76 enrolled patients. Common complications included prosthesis leakage, fistula leakage, granulation, and prosthesis extrusion. Prosthesis replacement due to fistula leakage or prosthesis extrusion was observed exclusively in the group of patients with primary TEP. Among the 28 patients (35.7%) who experienced complications, rehabilitation with TEP failed in 10 cases, primarily due to abandonment and spontaneous fistula closure. Conclusions: TEP, both primary and secondary, represents a valid option for vocal rehabilitation in patients undergoing TL. However, identifying prognostic factors that could influence the success of TEP would be beneficial to allow a targeted rehabilitation process.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To compare voice rehabilitation-related quality of life among patients surgically treated for total laryngectomy and rehabilitated with esophageal (EV) and tracheoesophageal (TEV) voice. METHODS A systematic literature review of articles from the past 20 years was conducted, and only full-text English articles comparing VTE and EV results in laryngectomized patients were included. RESULTS We provided 15 articles for a total of 1085 laryngectomized patients undergoing voice rehabilitation, of which 869 (80.1%) were treated with voice prosthesis while 216 (19.9%) to esophageal speech. Pooled VHI outcomes showed a significantly better score for the TEV group than EV one (31.93±12.11 versus 35.39±20.6; P = 0.003), but no significant difference was recorded at VrQoL (8.27±5.98 versus 9.27±2.02; P = 0.19). CONCLUSION TEV and EV are both effective procedures in voice rehabilitation after laryngectomy. Although TEV allows for significantly better speech performance, it does not necessarily correlate with a high VrQoL.

Abstract
Objective: In recent years, the number of open preservation surgeries for the treatment of laryngeal Cancer has increased. This surgery aims to maintain laryngeal function and ensure oncological radicality, thereby avoiding a total laryngectomy (TL) that could significantly impact the patient's quality of life. The purpose of this study was to assess the oncologic results of OPHL I and II and to identify prognostic factors that could impact patient survival and local failure rates. Methods: This study was conducted on 182 patients with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma treated with OPHLs between 2005 and 2015. The survival rates of a group of patients treated with TL between 2004 and 2014 were taken into consideration to compare survival outcomes. Results: The disease-specific survival in pT2 and pT3 tumors in relation to the type of surgery showed no statistically significant difference between OPHLs and TL (P = .54 and P = .63, respectively). The 5-year T-recurrence-free survival showed that pT4 tumors, perineural/vascular positive invasion, and OPHL IIb + ARY-treated tumors were associated with a higher risk of tumor recurrence (P < .0001, P = .0005 and P = .016 respectively). Conclusions: OPHLs represent an excellent alternative to TL considering the characteristics of the tumor and the general conditions of the patient.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to assess the product performance of a new moldable peristomal adhesive with corresponding heating pad designed to facilitate and improve automatic speaking valve (ASV) fixation for hands-free speech in laryngectomized patients. METHODS Twenty laryngectomized patients, all regular adhesive users with prior ASV experience, were included. Study-specific questionnaires were used for data collection at baseline and after two weeks of moldable adhesive use. The primary outcome parameters were adhesive lifetime during hands-free speech, use and duration of hands-free speech, and patient preference. Additional outcome parameters were satisfaction, comfort, fit, and usability. RESULTS The moldable adhesive enabled ASV fixation adequate for hands-free speech in the majority of participants. Overall, the moldable adhesive significantly increased adhesive lifetime and duration of hands-free speech compared to participants' baseline adhesives (p < 0.05), regardless of stoma depth, skin irritation, or regular use of hands-free speech at baseline. The participants who preferred the moldable adhesive (55% of participants) experienced a significant increase in the adhesive lifetime (median of 24 h, range 8-144 h) and improved comfort, fit, and ease of speech. CONCLUSION The moldable adhesive's lifetime and functional aspects, including the ease of use and custom fit, are encouraging outcomes and enable more laryngectomized patients to use hands-free speech more regularly. Abstract
The problem of cleaning impaired speech is crucial for various applications such as speech recognition, telecommunication, and assistive technologies. In this paper, we propose a novel approach that combines Pareto-optimized deep learning with non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) to effectively reduce noise in impaired speech signals while preserving the quality of the desired speech. Our method begins by calculating the spectrogram of a noisy voice clip and extracting frequency statistics. A threshold is then determined based on the desired noise sensitivity, and a noise-to-signal mask is computed. This mask is smoothed to avoid abrupt transitions in noise levels, and the modified spectrogram is obtained by applying the smoothed mask to the signal spectrogram. We then employ a Pareto-optimized NMF to decompose the modified spectrogram into basis functions and corresponding weights, which are used to reconstruct the clean speech spectrogram. The final noise-reduced waveform is obtained by inverting the clean speech spectrogram. Our proposed method achieves a balance between various objectives, such as noise suppression, speech quality preservation, and computational efficiency, by leveraging Pareto optimization in the deep learning model. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in cleaning alaryngeal speech signals, making it a promising solution for various real-world applications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To develop a patient-reported outcomes measure (PROM) for total laryngectomy. STUDY DESIGN Qualitative interviews with a purposive sample of patients with total laryngectomy, followed by cognitive debriefing interviews with patients and expert feedback. METHODS Concept elicitation was performed using in-depth qualitative interviews with a purposive sample of patients who had undergone total laryngectomy. Patients were recruited from head and neck surgery and speech-language pathology clinics as well as via laryngectomy support groups. Interviews were conducted, recorded, transcribed, and coded, resulting in a conceptual framework and item pool. Using the item pool, preliminary scales were drafted. The scales were revised iteratively over 5 rounds using feedback from cognitive interviews with patients and multi-institutional and multi-disciplinary expert feedback. RESULTS A total of 15 patients with total laryngectomy (mean age 68 years, range 57-79) were interviewed resulting in 1555 codes. The codes were used to form a conceptual framework grouped into top-level domains of stoma, function, health-related quality of life, devices, and experience of care. Items were used to form 15 preliminary scales that were revised over five rounds of cognitive debriefing interviews (n = 9 patients) and expert feedback (n = 17 experts). The field-test version of the LARY-Q has 18 scales and 277 items in total. CONCLUSIONS The LARY-Q is a novel PROM designed to assess outcomes associated with total laryngectomy. The next step involves a field test study with a heterogenous sample of patients to assess the psychometric properties of the LARY-Q and perform item reduction.

Abstract
We focus on the new prognostic and predictive factors CD44, PDL1, and ATG7 in our study of surgical samples of patients with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) using tissue microarray (TMA). Thirty-nine previously untreated patients affected by laryngeal carcinoma who then underwent surgical treatment were considered in this retrospective study. All surgical specimens were sampled, embedded in paraffin blocks, and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. A representative sample of the tumor was chosen and transferred into a new block of paraffin, the recipient block, to perform immunohistochemical analysis with the primary antibodies anti-CD44, PD-L1, and ATG7. At follow-up, 5-year disease-free survival (DFS) for negative and positive tumors was determined as 85.71% and 36% for CD44, 60% and 33.33% for PDL1, and 58.06% and 37.50% for ATG7, respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that CD44 expression is an independent predictive factor of low-grade tumors (p = 0.008), lymph node metastasis at the time of diagnosis, and AGT7 negativity. Thus, CD44 expression is a potential marker for more aggressive forms of laryngeal cancer.

Abstract
Purpose: A retrospective study is presented to correlate the inter-judge consistency for the different psycho-perceptual parameters of the recently proposed Impression Noise Fluency Voicing (INFVo) perceptual rating scale for substitution voices, and the vocal function as perceived by the patient. Methods: The scale Voice-Related Quality of Life (V-RQoL) and the Self Evaluation of Communication Experiences After Laryngectomy scale (SECEL)—a self-evaluation questionnaire of communicative experience after laryngectomy surgery—were administered to 89 total laryngectomees, subdivided in four groups depending on their type of alaryngeal voice (i.e., tracheoesophageal and esophageal speakers, electro larynx users, voiceless patients), in order to evaluate the impact of the impairment of the phonatory function on the quality of life. Results: No significant differences exist among the various groups on their perception of QoL using subjective questionnaires, whereas the INFVo scale has proven to be a useful tool for the description and analysis of the psychoacoustic characteristics of the vocal signal and a reliable instrument to correctly classify the patients. It is also notable that the judgement of the patients on their own voice and those of the referees are highly significant. Conclusion: Although speech rehabilitation for the acquisition of a substitution voice offers a new way of communication for the laryngectomized patients, nonetheless, their QoL is not significantly related to the type of substitution voice. Therefore, improving the patient’s adaptation to the new phonatory condition is mandatory.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to evaluate olfactory function in patients rehabilitated with oesophageal (ES) voice or tracheo-oesophageal (TES) prosthesis to further verify whether there were differences in smell alterations depending on voice rehabilitation modality. Methods A total of 40 patients who had undergone total laryngectomy participated in the study. Speech rehabilitation was achieved through TES in 20 patients (Group A) or ES in 20 patients (Group B). Olfactory function was evaluated using the Sniffin' Sticks test. Results At olfactory evaluation, in Group A, 4/20 patients (20%) were anosmic, whereas 16/20 patients (80%) were hyposmic; in Group B, 11/20 patients (55%) were anosmic whereas 9/20 patients (45%) were hyposmic. A significant difference (p = 0.04) was found at global objective evaluation. Conclusions The study shows that the rehabilitation with TES contributes to maintaining a functioning, albeit limited, sense of smell.

Abstract
PURPOSE The literature on postlaryngectomy voice and speech rehabilitation is long-standing. Although multiple rehabilitation options have existed over the years, the acquisition and use of esophageal speech (ES) has decreased significantly over the past 40 years. This reduction coincides with the increased application of tracheoesophageal puncture (TEP) voice restoration. The literature suggests that voice acquisition failures observed secondary to TEP may represent a similar phenomenon that led to ES acquisition failures. METHOD A comprehensive review of the literature on ES and TEP voice/speech was conducted. Specific attention was directed toward information on ES and TEP speech failures. Information on pharyngoesophageal segment (PES) spasm in the context of ES and TEP voicing failures was of specific importance. RESULTS Similarities between voicing failures with both ES and TEP were identified. In order to resolve spasm in TEP speech, proactive efforts to eliminate it were undertaken, and regardless of the method used, voicing improvements were observed. These data suggest that both ES and TEP speech acquisition failures may be related to the same control mechanisms influencing the PES. CONCLUSIONS The elimination of PES spasm provides evidence that justifies the reconsideration of ES. Consequently, ES may return as an increasingly viable postlaryngectomy voice and speech rehabilitation option.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Voice Handicap Index (VHI) and the Voice-Related Quality of Life Measure (V-RQOL) are seldom administered to alaryngeal patients who use pneumatic artificial larynx (PAL) and esophageal speech (ES). As such, the specificity of VHI and 10-item VHI (VHI-10) for assessing voice-related changes in such patients is unclear. Accordingly, this study investigated the correlation between scores on the VHI, its shortened version (VHI-10), and the V-RQOL for Mandarin-speaking laryngectomees using PAL and ES, with the aim of establishing which of these instruments is suited to such patients. METHODS The participants comprised 126 PAL and 26 ES patients from Taiwan who completed the Mandarin VHI and V-RQOL. Fifty-two of these alaryngeal participants then completed both those instruments a second time, between 8 and 64 days later. RESULTS One item appearing in both the Mandarin long-form VHI and the VHI-10 was excluded because more than half the participants left it unanswered. The correlation of scores on the remaining 29 items on the former with the nine on the latter was high ( r = 0.968), while that between the former and V-RQOL scores was moderate ( r = -0.569), as was the correlation between short-form VHI and Mandarin V-RQOL scores ( r = -0.582). Structural equation modeling was then used as the basis for simplifying the Mandarin long-form VHI into a new 10-item VHI specifically for alaryngeal Mandarin speakers (MA-VHI-10), to eliminate the scoring effect of the original VHI's and VHI-10's work-related item. MA-VHI-10 scores were highly correlated with those on the Mandarin long-form VHI ( r = 0.983). CONCLUSION The Mandarin versions of long-form VHI, short-form VHI, and MA-VHI-10 are interchangeable for a Mandarin-speaking alaryngeal population. However, neither of the former two instruments should be substituted for the V-RQOL.

Abstract
PURPOSE The study aimed to evaluate the impact of different variables on the longevity of Voice Prosthesis (VP) in patients after total laryngectomy. PATIENTS AND METHODS This retrospective cohort study is based on data about a continuous series of 328 third-generation VP, which were implanted between 2016 and 2020. Data about the VP users' age, sex, place of residence, laryngeal tumor stage, neck irradiation, VP size, and the use of Heat and Moisture Exchanger (HME) were obtained and analyzed. The effect of these variables on VP lifetime was determined. RESULTS The median lifetime of VPs in patients 65 years old and above was 182 days (95% CI 168-196), versus 146 days (95% CI 130-162) (P = 0.033) in patients younger than 65. Neck irradiation was associated with a longer VP median lifetime of 161 days (95% CI 142-180) compared to 126 days (95% CI 100-152) with no prior neck irradiation (P = 0.046). HME usage was associated with significantly increased longevity of VPs: 182 days (95% CI 156-208) with HME and 149 days (95% CI 132-166) without HME usage (P = 0.039). CONCLUSION The results of the present study suggest that neck irradiation, and routine use of use of HME are positively associated with the longevity of VPs.

Abstract
PURPOSE Quality of Life (QoL) after extensive head and neck resections is of paramount importance, especially after pharyngolaryngectomy or pharyngolaryngoesophagectomy where complex digestive tract reconstruction is required (with gastric pull-up or colon transposition). Tracheodigestive puncture (TDP) is the only vocal restoration option in this group of patients. The aim of this study is to evaluate postoperative complications, vocal outcomes, voice-related and swallowing-related QoL after secondary TDP in this cohort of patients. METHODS A retrospective study was conducted in the tertiary referral center of Verona Hospital between June 2014 and June 2020. Patient demographics, clinical and surgical data were assessed. Speech objective and subjective evaluation was performed. QoL was assessed with Voice Handicap Index-10 (VHI-10) and M.D. Anderson Dysphagia Inventory (MDADI) questionnaires. RESULTS Seven patients met the inclusion criteria, but two had died before questionnaires were administered. No intraoperative complications were noted after TDP surgery. There were delayed complications in four cases (57.1%) and all were treated with restoration. Intelligible voice was restored in all patients. Maximum phonation time and maximal voice intensity recorded were 5.42 ± 3.27 s and 65.20 ± 5.45 dB, respectively. Acceptable average VHI-10 and MDADI scores were obtained in all patients. CONCLUSIONS Secondary TDP performed after gastric pull-up or colon transposition reconstructions are feasible and effective procedures. An intelligible voice was restored in all patients, with satisfactory patient-perceived voice-related and dysphagia-related quality-of-life outcomes.

Abstract
Purpose The Voice Handicap Index (VHI) questionnaire assesses the impact of total laryngectomy on voice-related quality of life. This study evaluates the Mandarin VHI, including its internal consistency, test-retest reliability, content validity, and differences in scores for Mandarin alaryngeal patients with pneumatic artificial laryngeal (PA) and esophageal (ES) speech. Method Translation and validation of the VHI questionnaire was performed through the forward-backward translation technique. This study used a sample of 78 PA and 23 ES participants from Taiwan who completed the Mandarin VHI. Forty-two of the alaryngeal participants completed the Mandarin VHI twice over a period of 7-63 days. Results The measurement of the internal consistency of the Mandarin VHI showed a high Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the total score (.975) and the functional (.930), physical (.939), and emotional (.938) subscales. Based on the results of the intraclass correlation coefficients, good test-retest reliability for the total and domain scores was found (intraclass correlation coefficient = .827-.863). Conclusion The Mandarin VHI was validated as an instrument with proper internal consistency and reliability, which supports the Mandarin VHI as a valid instrument for the self-evaluation of handicaps related to voice problems in PA and ES speakers.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Laryngeal cancer is one of the most common cancers in the upper aerodigestive tract, and tobacco and alcohol habits are the most relevant risk factors. The role of these risk factors in the incidence of laryngeal carcinomas is well known, yet only a few studies have been conducted on their role as risk factors of prognosis. The aim of the study was to assess the impact of clinical–demographic data on overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), and disease-specific survival (DSS) in patients with advanced-stage laryngeal cancer (Stage III–IV) who underwent total laryngectomy. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study was carried out on patients with Stage III–IV laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma treated with total laryngectomy between 2004 and 2014. For each patient, clinical and anamnestic data were collected and collated in a database, including alcohol and smoking habits. Results: Considering the variable age, family history, alcohol, grading, subsite, stage, pT stage, pN stage, and adjuvant therapy, no statistical significance was found for five-year OS. Smoking was the only variable that was statistically significant (p = 0.0043). A relevant difference was noted in the five-year DFS between pN-negative and pN-positive tumors (74.3% vs. 55.26%, respectively; p = 0.056), and a statistically significant difference was found between non- and ≤20 cigarettes/day smokers and heavy smokers (77.78% vs. 53.66%, respectively; p = 0.021). The five-year disease-specific survival rate was 68.83%, and a significant difference was detected for the smoking and pN stage variables. Heavy smokers (43.90% died vs. 16.67% of the non- and ≤20 cigarettes/day smokers; p = 0.0057) and pN-positive (42.1% died vs. 20.51% of the pN-negative patients; p = 0.042) patients had a worse prognosis. Conclusion: Smoking in our study was found to be an important independent risk factor for worse OS and DSS in patients with advanced laryngeal cancer.

Abstract
PROPOSE The aim of the present article is to propose an alternative technique to the traditional secondary tracheoesophageal puncture (TEP) for voice rehabilitation after total laryngectomy, describing the procedure step-by-step, analyzing the complications and long-term results. METHODS A retrospective study was conducted on patients who underwent secondary TEP with the blind technique using a rigid hysterometer. The main steps in this technique are described and illustrated. Patient demographics and surgical outcomes were assessed. RESULTS Thirty-two patients were enrolled in this study. In all but one case, risk factors that could hinder rigid esophagoscopy were identified (37.5% neopharyngeal/esophageal post-surgical issues, 81.3% prior radiotherapy, 21.9% cervical arthrosis, and 12.5% prior coloplasty or gastric transposition). No intra- or postoperative surgical complications were noted. CONCLUSION The blind technique offers an alternative method to perform a secondary TEP safely and efficiently in patients with unfavorable anatomical or clinical conditions, lowering the risk of procedure-related complications.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW To review reconstruction techniques following total laryngectomy, partial laryngopharyngectomy, and total laryngopharyngectomy with an emphasis on long-term swallow and speech outcomes. RECENT FINDINGS Recent literature has shown that the use of fasciocutaneous free flaps in the reconstruction of laryngectomy defects may lead to improved speech and swallow outcomes as compared with regional or free musculocutaneous flaps. Radial forearm and anterolateral thigh are the most often used fasciocutaneous free flaps, with similar speech and swallow outcomes. Primary closure with myofascial flap onlay yields similar speech and swallow results to fasciocutaneous flaps following laryngectomy that spares sufficient pharyngeal mucosa. SUMMARY Whenever reconstructing a salvage laryngectomy defect or a primary laryngectomy defect with mucosal deficiency, current evidence suggests that a fasciocutaneous free flap used to augment pharyngeal volume both improves fistula rates as well as long-term speech and swallow outcomes. When sufficient pharyngeal mucosa is present, myofascial onlay can be considered as well.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess correlations between auditory-perceptual and self-reported speech evaluation methods for substitution voicing (SV) and to investigate the robustness of these methods in a clinical setting. METHODS Fifty-nine male patients who underwent laryngeal oncosurgery and 62 healthy male controls were included in this prospective study. Lithuanian versions of the Speech Handicap Index (SHI-LT) and Impression of voice quality (I), Impression of intelligibility (I), Unintended additive Noise (N), Fluency (F), and Quality of Voicing (Vo) scale (IINFVo-LT) were used to assess and compare self-reported and auditory-perceptual evaluations of SV. Speech samples were rated by a panel of experienced raters. RESULTS The IINFVo-LT revealed good inter-rater reliability (ICC = 0.825) and intrarater reliability over time (ICC = 0.976) when assessing SV. Statistically significant differences (P < 0.05) of the mean scores of IINFVo-LT among the cordectomy, partial laryngectomy (22.52 [SD 9.98]), tracheoesophageal prosthesis (16.92 [SD 10.71]), and control (48.01 [SD 2.88]) groups confirmed the usefulness of IINFVo-LT for SV rating. A moderate negative correlation (r = -0.61; P < 0.001) demonstrated good concurrent validity between the IINFVo-LT and the SHI-LT total scores. A statistically significant, strong, negative correlation (r = -0.74) was obtained between the IINFVo-LT and SHI-LT speech handicap grade (P < 0.001), demonstrating good concurrent validity. CONCLUSION The combination of IINFVo-LT and SHI-LT represents a potentially valuable and robust tool for evaluating SV and is helpful for assessing the degree of speech abnormality after laryngeal oncosurgery and its impact on patients' quality of life.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to correlate several instruments currently used for the assessment of the quality of life of patients who underwent total laryngectomy and speech rehabilitation. METHODS A cross-sectional, observational study was conducted with 38 patients after total laryngectomy and speech therapy aiming to develop oesophageal speech. The patients were divided into the following two groups (19 participants each): speakers and non-speakers. The quality of life instruments used were as follows: visual analogue scale (VAS); Voice Handicap Index (VHI); Voice-Related Quality of Life (V-RQOL); Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy - Head & Neck (FACT-H&N); European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Core Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30); European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-Head and Neck (EORTC QLQ-H&N35); and University of Washington Quality of Life (UW-QOL). RESULTS The V-RQOL global health domain exhibited a strong correlation with the VHI. The EORTC QLQ-C30 exhibited a moderate to strong correlation with the EORTC QLQ-H&N35 functional domain in both groups. The EORTC QLQ-C30 functional domain exhibited a strong to moderate correlation with all other instruments in both groups. The UW-QOL exhibited a moderate to strong correlation with the VHI and EORTC QLQ-C30 in both groups. CONCLUSION The EORTC QLQ-C30, EORTC QLQ-H&N35 and UW-QOL were the instruments that most correlated with the remaining instruments, indicating that any of the three can be used to assess the quality of life of the target population regardless of oesophageal voice development.
