Health Literacy Among Young People in Africa: Evidence Synthesis

The relationship between health literacy and problematic internet use in Chinese college students: The mediating effect of subject well-being and moderating effect of social support

BACKGROUND

The issue of problematic Internet use (PIU) amongst college students is emerging as a major concern for mental health. Factors such as health literacy, subjective well-being and the extent of social support may be critical in preventing PIU. However, the complex relationship between these factors has not been extensively explored in research.

METHODS

A national cross-sectional study based on multistage random sampling was conducted in China in 2022. The subjects for this study were 7669 college students who completed a set of questionnaires assessing their health literacy, subjective well-being, PIU and social support. A structural equation model (SEM) was utilised for exploring the mediating effect of subjective well-being, and the PROCESS macro was used to test the moderating effect of social support.

RESULTS

After controlling for demographic factors, a significantly negative correlation was found between health literacy and PIU, and subjective well-being partially mediated this relationship. In addition, social support was negatively related to PIU and could moderate the relationship between health literacy and subjective well-being and between subjective well-being and PIU.

LIMITATIONS

This is a cross-sectional study, and the results cannot inform the causality between these variables.

CONCLUSION

Results revealed that the relationship between health literacy and PIU was partially mediated by subjective well-being in college students. The correlation between health literacy and subjective well-being and between subjective well-being and PIU were moderated by social support. Thus, future interventions for college students' PIU should be facilitated by improving health literacy, subjective well-being and social support.

Intersectionality on the perception of health in two cross-national surveys (WVS and EVS)

This article focuses on the health perceptions of people across social strata and nations using the combined dataset of the World Values Survey and the European Values Study (EVS/WVS). An intercategorical intersectional analysis model was developed to examine the social determinants underlying differences in health perceptions. Using logistic regression of the interactions between sex, age, level of educational attainment and income, we calculated the impact of these variables (main effects) and their interactions within the intersecting categories on health perceptions. The group with the best perception of their health includes men aged 16-49, with a high income and an upper-middle level of education. Comparative analysis has been carried out to identify differences in the influence of intersectional categories across countries. Of particular relevance is the number of Eastern European countries where the perception of people aged 50 and over with low income is very poor.

Hypertension Related Co-Morbidities and Complications in Women of Sub-Saharan Africa: A Brief Review

Hypertension is the leading cause of cardiovascular disease in women, and sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries have some of the highest rates of hypertension in the world. Expanding knowledge of causes, management, and awareness of hypertension and its co-morbidities worldwide is an effective strategy to mitigate its harms, decrease morbidities and mortality, and improve individual quality of life. Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDPs) are a particularly important subset of hypertension, as pregnancy is a major stress test of the cardiovascular system and can be the first instance in which cardiovascular disease is clinically apparent. In SSA, women experience a higher incidence of HDP compared with other African regions. However, the region has yet to adopt treatment and preventative strategies for HDP. This delay stems from insufficient awareness, lack of clinical screening for hypertension, and lack of prevention programs. In this brief literature review, we will address the long-term consequences of hypertension and HDP in women. We evaluate the effects of uncontrolled hypertension in SSA by including research on heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, peripheral arterial disease, and HDP. Limitations exist in the number of studies from SSA; therefore, we will use data from countries across the globe, comparing and contrasting approaches in similar and dissimilar populations. Our review highlights an urgent need to prioritize public health, clinical, and bench research to discover cost-effective preventative and treatment strategies that will improve the lives of women living with hypertension in SSA.

Surgical informed consent practices and influencing factors in sub-Saharan Africa: a scoping review of the literature

INTRODUCTION

Current international standards in consent to surgery practices are usually derived from health systems in Western countries, while little attention has been given to other contexts such as sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), despite this region facing the highest burdens of disease amenable to surgery globally. The aim of this study was to examine how the concept of informed consent for surgery is interpreted and applied in the context of SSA, and factors affecting current practices.

METHODS

A systematic search of Medline, Embase and African Journal OnLine databases as well as grey sources was executed in May 2023 to retrieve relevant literature published since 2010 in English language against a set of given criteria. The socioecological framework for health was used for organising and summarising the identified evidence.

RESULTS

A total of 27 papers were included in the review. Findings revealed that consent to surgery practices is generally substandard across SSA and the process is not adequate. Patients' understanding of informed consent is limited, likewise awareness of their rights to decision-making. A range of factors at the individual, interpersonal, institutional and system/societal levels affect the informed consent process.

CONCLUSION

There is a need to find more culturally acceptable and ethical ways to include the participation of patients in the decision-making process for surgical treatment in the SSA and define standards more closely aligned with the local context.
