The inhibition of crystal growth of gypsum and barite scales in industrial water systems using green antiscalant

The Roles of Oil-Water Interfaces in Forming Ultrasmall CaSO4 Nanoparticles

In natural and engineered environmental systems, calcium sulfate (CaSO4) nucleation commonly occurs at dynamic liquid-liquid interfaces. Although CaSO4 is one of the most common minerals in oil spills and oil-water separation, the mechanisms driving its nucleation at these liquid-liquid interfaces remain poorly understood. In this study, using in situ small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), we examined CaSO4 nucleation at oil-water interfaces and found that within 60 minutes of reaction, short rod-shaped nanoparticles (with a radius of gyration (Rg) of 17.2 ± 2.7 nm and a length of 38.2 ± 5.8 nm) had formed preferentially at the interfaces. Wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) analysis identified these nanoparticles as gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O). In addition, spherial nanoparticles measuring 4.1 nm in diameter were observed at oil-water interfaces, where surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) revealed an elevated pH compared to the bulk solution. The negatively charged oil-water interfaces preferentially adsorb calcium ions, collectively promoting CaSO4 formation there. CaSO4 particle formation at the oil-water interface follows a nonclassical nucleation (N-CNT) pathway by forming ultrasmall amorphous spherical particles which then aggregate to form intermediate nanoparticles, subsequently growing into nanorod-shaped gypsum. These findings of this study provide insights into mineral scaling during membrane separation and can inform more efficient oil transport in energy recovery systems.

The evaluation of Bacillus-secreted polyglutamic acid as anti-scaling treatment for circulating cooling water

Polyaspartic acid is considered a green agent for the treatment of circulating cooling water. However, its chemosynthetic process is not green, as it requires significant amounts of energy and causes water pollution. In this work, we identified an analog of polyaspartic acid, namely polyglutamic acid (γ-PGA), which could be directly produced by Bacillus spp., and we explored its performance and scale inhibition mechanism as a scale inhibitor. We found that γ-PGA secreted by B. megaterium with a molecular weight of ~ 70 kDa showed poor scale inhibition, while the γ-PGA secreted by B. licheniformis with a molecular weight of ~ 15 kDa had a 26.87% higher efficiency compared to commercially available polyaspartic acid. The scale inhibition mechanism was explored using the γ-PGA material secreted by B. licheniformis. Fourier transform spectrometer, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis demonstrated that the scale inhibition performance of γ-PGA was due to the combination of its functional groups and Ca²⁺, which affected the growth process of CaCO₃ and inhibited the formation of CaCO₃. This study provided deeper insight into scale inhibition performance related to the scale inhibition mechanism.

New application of brown sea algae as an alternative to phosphorous-containing antiscalant

Over the past decade, green chemistry research has focused on the importance of protecting the environment, especially to align with UN sustainable development goals by avoiding the use of chemicals that are harmful to the environment and society. In this study, an aqueous extract derived from brown sea algae was prepared and its performance as antiscalant was compared to commercial antiscalant (Hydroxy ethylidene, 1-Diphosphonic Acid, HEDP) and evaluated using electrochemical measurements, conductivity and standard NACE test in addition to microscopic examination. It was found that there is a significant inhibition efficiency of brown algae towards the tested scales as HEDP. The obtained extract had the ability to prevent precipitation of calcium sulphate, calcium carbonate, barium sulphate and strontium carbonate with percent inhibition of 100%, 80%, 84% and 75%, respectively. The inhibitory effect of the extract can be attributed to the presence of carboxylate and hydroxyl groups that are adsorbed on the surface sites and disturb the normal crystal growth of the scale. The results of the study will lead to the discovery of further new applications of ecologically, cost-effective, renewable source and benign antiscalant that can be considered as an alternative to non-green technologies particularly those used in the food and pharmaceutical industries as well as in desalination plants.

Scale inhibition in industrial water systems using chitosan‐alginate mixture

The study aims to establishing the possibility of using eco‐friendly natural polymers to formulate scale inhibitor for industrial water applications. The performance of a blend of two natural polymers, chitosan and sodium alginate as scale inhibitor in comparison with a commercially available inhibitor formulation, HEDP (Hydroxyethylidene, 1‐Diphosphonic Acid), is carried out using electrochemical measurements, conductivity and NACE test complemented with crystals morphology characterization using optical and electronic microscopic examination. Overall results show that chitosan is more efficient for the inhibition of calcium carbonate scales formation, whilst it has poor efficiency in the inhibition of sulfate scales, whereas sodium alginate has the highest efficiency in inhibiting calcium sulfate scales. However, the addition of sodium alginate to chitosan, as a package, has a dual control effect on carbonate and sulfate scale formation with good efficiency compared to HEDP. This new phosphorus‐free package represents an effective antiscalant to have green environment.

Crystal growth inhibition of gypsum under normal conditions and high supersaturations by a copolymer of phosphino-polycarboxylic acid

Scale formation is a bottleneck of most industrial and domestic water equipment, in particular, of oilfield water systems. Therefore, high-performance and environmentally-benign chemical scale inhibitors are highly needed. Phosphino-polycarboxylic acid (PPCA) is a low-in-phosphorous scale inhibitor with high inhibition efficiency, but its synthesis and performance analyses have been rarely disclosed. In this work for the first time, a PPCA copolymer is synthesized by a simple method based on free radical polymerization of acrylic acid and phosphinic acid monomers and directly employed for gypsum scale inhibition. The formation of PPCA was verified by FTIR and ³¹PNMR spectroscopies, and then its inhibition performance was evaluated by the complexometric determination of the Ca²⁺ concentration. The PPCA (2.5 ppm) showed 100% inhibition efficiency at a saturation index of 0.31 at the room temperature and without pH regulation after 24 h with practically no detectable gypsum crystallites even after two months, while the commercial ATMP showed a low inhibition efficiency of 30%. The Field Emission Scanning Microscopy (FESEM) images of the PPCA-inhibited and uninhibited samples revealed that the typical gypsum microfibers are distorted and reduced in size significantly in the inhibited sample. At a still higher saturation index of 1.47 (saturation ratio of 10), the inhibition efficiency of PPCA reduced to 16% and 24% for two dosages of 2.5 and 10 ppm which was attributed to the higher ion activity coefficients at the extremely high ionic strength, and hence, a much higher thermodynamic driving force. The rate constants for these two high supersaturation conditions and low PPCA dosages were also calculated and discussed.

A Review of Green Scale Inhibitors: Process, Types, Mechanism and Properties

In the present time, more often, it has been seen that scaling has grown as widely and caused problems in the oilfield industry. Scaling is the deposition of various salts of inorganic/organic materials due to the supersaturation of salt-water mixtures. Many works have been proposed by researchers using different methods to solve the problem, of which scale inhibition is one of them. The scale inhibitors, particularly for antiscaling, have derived from natural and synthetic polymers. Among different polymers, inorganic and organic compounds (polyphosphates, carboxylic acid, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), etc.) can effectively manage the oilfield scales of which many are toxic and expansive. Scale inhibitors of alkaline earth metal carbonate and sulfates and transition metal sulfide are commonly used in oilfield applications. Scale inhibition of metallic surfaces is an essential activity in technical, environmental, economic, and safety purposes. Scale inhibitors containing phosphorus appear to have significant achievements in the inhibition process despite its toxicity. However, phosphorus-based inhibitors can serve as supplements prompting eutrification difficulties. Besides these increasing environmental concerns, green scale inhibitors are renewable, biodegradable, and ecologically acceptable that has been used to prevent, control, and retard the formation of scale. Considering the facts, this review article summarized the concept of scale, various green scale inhibitors, types, mechanisms, comparative performance, significance, and future aspects of green scale inhibitors, which will shed light and be helpful for the professionals working in the oil and gas industries.
