Development of adsorbent for the simultaneous removal of organic and inorganic contaminants from aqueous solution

Selective removal of thallium from water by MnO2-doped magnetic beads: Performance and mechanism study

Aqueous thallium has posed an increasing threat to environment as human's intensified activities in mining, refining, process and discharge. Remediation on thallium pollution has been of up-most importance to water treatment. In present work, MnO2 and magnetic Fe3O4 have been implanted to sodium alginate (SA) in presence of carboxyl methyl cellulose (CMC), and the resultant beads consisted of SA/CMC/MnO2/Fe3O4 were characterized. The materials were applied to treatment of Tl-contaminated water as adsorbent in lab. The removal results revealed that the adsorption capacity reached 38.8 mg (Tl)·g (beads)-1 and almost 100 % removal efficiency was achieved. The residual Tl was below 0.1 μg·L-1, meeting the discharge standard regulated in China. The kinetic adsorption was better described as a pseudo-second-order and three-step intra-particle diffusion model. Freundlich isotherm was well fitted the experimental data. The absorbent shown an excellent competitive specificity (KTl/M: ∼104!) over common hazardous ions Cu2+, Cd2+, Co2+, Pb2+ and Cr3+, as well as naturally abundant K+ and Na+ (KTl/M: 10-102) in mimic environmental conditions. Regeneration and reusability of the absorbent was also verified by five absorption-desorpotion cycles. XPS results revealed that a redox reaction between Mn4+ with Tl+, and an ion exchange of H+ (-O-Fe) and Tl+ were assumed to be main process for the specific capturing. This study provided an efficient SA/CMC/MnO2/Fe3O4 composite beads that could be a promising adsorbent for Tl-polluted water treatment.

Alginate-based nano-adsorbent materials - Bioinspired solution to mitigate hazardous environmental pollutants

Population growth and industrialization is associated with the elevation of hazardous pollutants, including heavy metals, biomedical wastes, personal-care products, endocrine-disrupters, pharmaceutically active compounds, and colorants in the environment. The scientific focus has been devoted to developing novel adsorbents to mitigate hazardous pollutants by constructing hybrids of different polymers and nano-structured materials for improved workability and physicochemical attributes. Recently, much attention has been devoted to nanomaterials in environmental remediation, owning to their exceptional characteristics including novel electrical/chemical features, quantum size effects, tunable functionalization, high scalability, and surface-area-to-volume ratio. Target-specific designing of nanocomposites impart high functionality. The cost-effective and eco-friendly synthesis of bioadsorbent materials is increasing for the removal of hazardous pollutants. Due to biocompatible, biodegradable, and eco-friendly nature, sodium alginate has been widely reported for the preparation of bioadsorbent materials to remove different inorganic/organic pollutants. In this review, the potentialities of alginate-based nanocomposites have been described for environmental remediation purposes. Different nanomaterials, including silica, metallic oxide, graphene oxide, hybrid inorganic-organic, non-magnetic-magnetic, carbon nanorods, nanotubes, polymeric nanocarriers, and several other materials have been described in combination with alginate biopolymer for environmental remediation.

Strong chromate-adsorbent based on pyrrolic nitrogen structure: An experimental and theoretical study on the adsorption mechanism

Chromate is considered a toxic contaminant in various water sources because it poses a risk to animal and human health. To meet the stringent limits for chromium in water and wastewater, pyrrolic nitrogen structure was investigated as a chromate adsorbent for aqueous solutions, employing a polypyrrole coating on carbon black. The characteristics of the adsorbent were analyzed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Chromate was adsorbed as both Cr(III) and Cr(VI). The chromate adsorption capacity increased (from 50.84 to 174.81 mg/g) with increasing amounts of pyrrole monomers (from 50 to 86%) in the adsorbent. The adsorption capacity was well-correlated with the pyrrolic nitrogen content (from 2.06 to 6.57 at%) in the adsorbent, rather than other types of nitrogen. The optimized adsorption capacity (174.81 mg/g in the equilibrium batch experiment and 211.10 mg/g at an initial pH of 3) was far superior to those of conventional adsorbents. We investigated the mechanism behind this powerful chromate adsorption on pyrrolic nitrogen via physical/chemical analyses of the pH-dependent adsorption behavior, supported by first-principles calculation based on density functional theory. We found that Cr(III) and Cr(VI) adsorption followed different reaction paths. Cr(III) adsorption occurred in two sequential steps: 1) A Jones oxidation reaction (JOR)-like reaction of Cr(VI) with pyrrolic N that generates Cr(III), and 2) Cr(III) adsorption on the deprotonated pyrrolic N through Cr(III)-N covalent bonding. Cr(VI) adsorption followed an alternative path: hydrogen-bonding to the deprotonation-free pyrrolic N sites. The pH-dependent fractional deprotonation of the pyrrolic N sites by the JOR-like reaction in the presence of chromate played an important role in the adsorption.

Chromate adsorption mechanism on nanodiamond-derived onion-like carbon

The onion-like carbon (OLC) was prepared as adsorbent and tested for the removal of chromate ions from aqueous solutions. The OLC was thermally derived from nanodiamond by vacuum annealing at 1000-2000°C. An investigation was conducted the chromate adsorption mechanism of OLC, by analysing the temperature-dependent evolution of the various oxygen-carbon bonds and the chemisorbed water by X-ray photo electron spectroscopy, as well as by the first principle calculation of the bond energies for relevant bond configurations. The present work demonstrated the importance of the carbon-oxygen bond type and carbon dangling bonds for chromate adsorption, as well as for other anionic heavy metals adsorbed from wastewater and sewage.

Preparation of high-quality activated carbon from polyethyleneterephthalate (PET) bottle waste. Its use in the removal of pollutants in aqueous solution

A waste-treats-waste approach has been used for the removal of two common pollutants, namely p-nitrophenol and/or Fe(III) from aqueous solution. Polyethyleneterephthalate (PET) from bottle waste has been used as the precursor for the preparation of activated carbons (ACs) by physical activation with steam and chemical activation with potassium hydroxide under controlled heating conditions and atmospheres. The resulting ACs were characterized in terms of chemical composition, porous texture and surface chemistry, and morphology. Selected ACs were tested as adsorbents for the removal of the aforementioned pollutants in aqueous solution. For comparison purposes, a commercial AC was also used. In general, the yield of the process of preparation of ACs is lower than 10% with steam and between 24.62 and 32.07% with potassium hydroxide. ACs possess a very high carbon content and a very low ash content. The BET surface areas reach 1235 m(2) g(-1) with steam and 1002 m(2) g(-1) with potassium hydroxide at most. Also, the degrees of development of micro- and mesoporosity are markedly larger with steam. Conversely, the development of macroporosity is much larger with potassium hydroxide. The PET-derived ACs exhibit a better adsorption behavior towards p-nitrophenol than the commercial AC, both in terms of adsorption rate and adsorption capacity. On the contrary, the commercial AC acts as a better adsorbent of Fe(III) ions. As compared to separately, the simultaneous presence of both solutes in the adsorptive solution scarcely affects the adsorption process except for equilibrium for Fe(III).

Effect of nitrogen doping on titanium carbonitride-derived adsorbents used for arsenic removal

Arsenic in water and wastewater is considered to be a critical contaminant as it poses harmful health risks. In this regard, to meet the stringent regulation of arsenic in aqueous solutions, nitrogen doped carbon-based materials (CN) were prepared as adsorbents and tested for the removal of arsenic ion from aqueous solutions. Nitrogen-doped carbon (CNs) synthesized by chlorination exhibited well-developed micro- and small meso-pores with uniform pore structures. The structure and characteristics of the adsorbents thus developed were confirmed by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Among the CNs developed, CN700 exhibited high adsorption capacity for arsenic (31.08 mg/g). The adsorption efficiency for arsenic ion was confirmed to be affected by pyrrolic nitrogen and micro-pores. These results suggest that CNs are useful adsorbents for the treatment of arsenic, and in particular, CN700 demonstrates potential for application as an adsorbent for the removal of anionic heavy metals from wastewater and sewage.
