Vertical flow constructed wetlands: kinetics of nutrient and organic matter removal

Actas Pink-2B dye removal in biochar nanocomposites augmented vertical flow constructed wetland (VF-CWs)

Industries generate hazardous dye wastewater, posing significant threats to public health and the environment. Removing dyes before discharge is crucial. The ongoing study primarily focused on synthesizing, applying, and understanding the mechanism of green nano-biochar composites. These composites, including zinc oxide/biochar, copper oxide/biochar, magnesium oxide/biochar, and manganese oxide/biochar, are designed to effectively remove Actas Pink-2B (Direct Red-31) in conjunction with constructed wetlands. Constructed wetland maintained pH 6.0-7.9. At the 10th week, the copper oxide/biochar treatment demonstrated the highest removal efficiency of total suspended solids (72%), dissolved oxygen (7.2 mg/L), and total dissolved solids (79.90%), followed by other biochar composites. The maximum removal efficiency for chemical oxygen demand (COD) and color was observed at a retention time of 60 days. The electrical conductivity also followed the same order, with a decrease observed up to the 8th week before becoming constant. A comprehensive statistical analysis was conducted, encompassing various techniques including variance analysis, regression analysis, correlation analysis, and principal component analysis. The rate of color and COD removal followed a second-order and first-order kinetics, respectively. A significant negative relationship was observed between dissolved oxygen and COD. The study indicates that employing biochar composites in constructed wetlands improves textile dye removal efficiency.

Green metal oxides coated biochar nanocomposites preparation and its utilization in vertical flow constructed wetlands for reactive dye removal: Performance and kinetics studies

Major causes of water pollution in the ecosystem are pollutants such as dyes which are noxious. The present study was based on the synthesis of the green nano-biochar composites from cornstalk and green metal oxide resulting in Copper oxide/biochar, Zinc oxide /biochar, Magnesium oxide/biochar, Manganese oxide/biochar, biochar for removal of dyes combined with the constructed wetland (CW). Biochar Augmentation in constructed wetland systems has improved dye removal efficiency to 95% in order of copper oxide/biochar > Magnesium oxide/biochar > Zinc oxide/biochar > Manganese oxide/biochar > biochar > control (without biochar) respectively in wetlands. It has increased the efficiency of pH by maintaining pH 6.9-7.4, while Total Suspended Solids (TSS) removal efficiency and Dissolved oxygen (DO) increased with the hydraulic retention time of about 7 days for 10 weeks. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) and colour removal efficiency increased with the hydraulic retention time of 12 days for 2 months and there was a low removal efficiency for total dissolved solids (TDS) from control (10.11%) to Copper oxide /biochar (64.44%) and Electrical conductivity (EC) from control (8%) to Copper oxide /biochar (68%) with the hydraulic retention time of about 7 days for 10 weeks. Colour and chemical oxygen demand removal kinetics followed second and first-order kinetic. A significant growth in the plants were also observed. These results proposed the use of agricultural waste-based biochar as part of a constructed wetland substratum can provide enhanced removal of textile dyes. That can be reused.

Constructed Wetlands in Latin America and the Caribbean: A Review of Experiences during the Last Decade

The review aims to report the state-of-the-art constructed wetlands (CW) in the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region not limited to national and local conditions. The aim is with a broader view, to bring updated and sufficient information, to facilitate the use of the CW technology in the different countries of LAC. Thus, 520 experiences extracted from the 169 reviewed documents in 20 countries were analyzed. According to the data, horizontal subsurface flow wetlands are the most reported CW in the region (62%), the second most common CW technology in the region is free water surface CW (17%), then vertical flow systems (9%), followed by intensified constructed wetlands (8%), and finally French systems (4%). The performance for nutrient removal is analyzed, finding that the mean of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Nitrogen (TN), and Total Phosphorous (TP) removal efficiencies varies from 65% to 83%, 55% to 72%, and 30% to 84%, respectively. The results suggest a generally good performance for COD and TN removal, but a low performance for TP removal. Regarding plant species used for CWs, 114 different plant species were reported, being until now the most extensive report about plant species used in CWs in the LAC region.

Emulating natural wetlands oxygen conditions for the removal of N and P in agricultural wastewaters

The aim of this research was to evaluate a constructed wetland system (CW) operated under aerobic-anoxic-aerobic conditions to remove C, N and P from water with high concentrations of the last two nutrients. A series of three CW were operated continuously for 190 days. An aerobic vertical CW was used in the first and third stages and an anoxic horizontal CW was used in the second stage. The total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency was 70 ± 1.5%. Similar removal efficiency behavior was observed in others nitrogen compounds, where a removal of 85 ± 1.5% for NO₃^--N and 97 ± 2.2% for NH₃⁺N were achieved. The combination of different oxygen conditions enhanced oxidation of nitrates and the assimilation of ammonium by vegetation. On the other hand, 54 ± 6.5% total phosphorus (TP) was removed in the entire system, which is higher than the reported in several investigations, including mechanized and controlled systems such as activated sludge. The phosphorous removal efficiency was attributed to the adequate design and configuration of CW, which facilitated dissolved oxygen (DO) conditions required for phosphorus capture. Despite in this investigation the CW was not designed for an optimal removal of organic matter the removal efficiency of this parameter was 64 ± 7.5%. The successful results suggest that the combination of aerobic-anoxic-aerobic stages is a technically suitable option for the treatment of agricultural wastewater with high content of N and P.

Modeling organic matter and nitrogen removal from domestic wastewater in a pilot-scale vertical subsurface flow constructed wetland

Constructed wetlands have become an attractive alternative for wastewater treatment. However, there is not a globally accepted mathematical model to predict their performance. In this study, the VS2DTI software was used to predict the effluent biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and total nitrogen (TN) in a pilot-scale vertical flow constructed wetland (VFCW) treating domestic wastewater. After a 5-week adaptation period, the pilot system was monitored for another 6 weeks. Experiments were conducted at hydraulic retention times (HRTs) in the range of 2-4 days with Typha latifolia as the vegetation. The raw wastewater concentrations ranged between 144-430 and 122-283 mg L(-1) for BOD5 and TN, respectively. A first-order kinetic model coupled with the advection/dispersion and Richards' equations was proposed to predict the removal rates of BOD5 and TN from domestic wastewater. Two main physical processes were modeled in this study, porous material water flow and solute transport through the different layers of the VFCW to simulate the constructed wetland (CW) conditions. The model was calibrated based on the BOD5 and TN degradation constants. The model indicated that most of BOD and TN (88 and 92%, respectively) were removed through biological activity followed by adsorption. It was also observed that the evapotranspiration was seen to have a smaller impact. An additional data series of effluent BOD and TN was used for model validation. The residual analysis of the calibrated model showed a relatively random pattern, indicating a decent fit. Thus, the VS2DTI was found to be a useful tool for CW simulation.
