Visible light induced photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B by magnetic bentonite

Controllable Synthesis of Modified Porous Anatase TiO₂ with High Photocatalytic Activity

In this study, we added ZrO₂ and Y₂O₃ to stabilize the anatase TiO₂ phase at higher temperatures. Composite mesoporous TiO₂/ZrO₂/Y₂O₃ (TZY) oxides were prepared by a sol-gel method, and triblockcopolymer P123 and PEG was used as templates. The properties of the synthesized materials were characterized using X-Ray diffraction (XRD), Raman scattering, N₂ adsorption/desorption, and UV-Visible spectrophotometry (UV-Vis) methods et al. The samples prepared using P123 and PEG as double-template exhibited smaller particles and a higher specific surface area than the samples prepared using P123 and PEG as single-template. Furthermore, crystal phase transition from anatase to rutile occurred later in the case of the double-template method. After introducing ZrO ₂and Y₂O₃, the crystal phase transition and the growth of crystallites were severely suppressed. The results indicated that the RhB degradation efficiency for the double-template method was 99.24%, while the RhB degradation efficiency with TZY/P123 and TZY/PEG samples was 97.43 and 98.18%, respectively.

A novel CoFe2O4@Cr-MIL-101/Y zeolite ternary nanocomposite as a magnetically separable sonocatalyst for efficient sonodegradation of organic dye contaminants from water

In this research, a novel magnetic sonocatalyst nanocomposite, CoFe₂O₄@Cr-MIL-101/Y zeolite, has been successfully fabricated employing a simple hydrothermal method. The as-prepared catalyst was thoroughly identified using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), EDS elemental dot-mapping, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and nitrogen Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (N₂-BET) analyses. The procured CoFe₂O₄@Cr-MIL-101/Y nanocomposite was then assessed for the decomposition of three types of organic dyes namely methylene blue (MB), rhodamine B (RhB) and methyl orange (MO) from water solution using ultrasound irradiation and subsequently monitored via UV-Vis absorption technique. The sonodecomposition reactions of organic dyes were accomplished in the presence of the H₂O₂ solution as a green oxidizing agent. Furthermore, the influence of various experimental independent factors such as irradiation time, process type, initial dye concentration, catalyst dosage, H₂O₂ concentration, scavenger type, and catalyst regeneration on the decomposition of MB, RhB and MO were surveyed. Additionally, a first order kinetic model was applied to investigate the sonodecomposition reactions of dye contaminants. The rate constant (k) and half-life (t_1/2) data were gained as 0.0675 min⁻¹ and 10.2666 min, respectively, for the decomposition of MB in the US/H₂O₂/CoFe₂O₄@Cr-MIL-101/Y system. Besides, evaluating the attained results, the distinctive performance of ˙OH as the radical scavenger originating from H₂O₂ throughout the sonodecomposition process is vividly approved.

Ferrocene-functionalized graphitic carbon nitride as an enhanced heterogeneous catalyst of Fenton reaction for degradation of Rhodamine B under visible light irradiation

To enhance degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB), a toxic xanthene dye, an iron-doped graphitic carbon nitride (CN) is prepared by establishing a covalent bond (-CN-) bridging ferrocene (Fc) and CN via a Schiff base reaction. The π-conjugation between the aromatic Fc and CN can be much enhanced by the covalent bond, thereby facilitating the bulk-to-surface charge transfer and separation as well as reversible photo-redox reactions during photocatalytic reactions. Thus, the resulting Fc-CN exhibits a much higher catalytic activity than CN to activate hydrogen peroxide (HP) for RhB degradation, because the photocatalytically generated electrons from CN can activate HP and effectively maintain the bivalence state of Fe in Fc, which also induces the activation of HP. The RhB degradation by the Fc-CN activated HP process (Fc-CN-HP) is validated to involve OH^• by examining the effect of radical probe agent as well as electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopic analysis. Fc-CN is also proven to activate HP for RhB degradation over multiple times without loss of catalytic activity. Through determining the degradation intermediates, RhB is indeed fully decomposed by Fc-CN-HP into much lower-molecular-weight organic compounds. These features indicate that Fc-functionalization can be an advantageous technique to enhance the catalytic activity of CN for activating HP. The results obtained in this study are essential to further design and utilize Fc-functionalized CN for Fenton-like reactions. The findings shown here, especially the degradation mechanism and pathway, are also quite important for treating xanthene dyes in wastewater.
