Impact of Human Activities on Disease-Spreading Mosquitoes in Urban Areas

Urbanization is one of the leading global trends of the twenty-first century that has a significant impact on health. Among health challenges caused by urbanization, the relationship of urbanization between emergence and the spread of mosquito-borne infectious diseases (MBIDs) is a great public health concern. Urbanization processes encompass social, economic, and environmental changes that directly impact the biology of mosquito species. In particular, urbanized areas experience higher temperatures and pollution levels than outlying areas but also favor the development of infrastructures and objects that are favorable to mosquito development. All these modifications may influence mosquito life history traits and their ability to transmit diseases. This review aimed to summarize the impact of urbanization on mosquito spreading in urban areas and the risk associated with the emergence of MBIDs. Moreover, mosquitoes are considered as holobionts, as evidenced by numerous studies highlighting the role of mosquito-microbiota interactions in mosquito biology. Taking into account this new paradigm, this review also represents an initial synthesis on how human-driven transformations impact microbial communities in larval habitats and further interfere with mosquito behavior and life cycle in urban areas.

Efficient electro-catalyzed PMS activation on a Fe-ZIF-8 based BTNAs/Ti anode: An in-depth investigation on anodic catalytic behavior

Phenanthrene (PHE), mainly released from coal tar and petroleum distillation, is an important kind of prevalent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contamination in China (up to 2.38 ± 0.02 mg/kg in soil and 8668 ng/L in surface water) and other countries in the world. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) show promising application prospects in the decontamination field, however, suffering from the intrinsic fragility and fine powder forms. Therefore, macroscopic MOFs architecture-sandwich-like Fe-ZIF-8/blue TiO₂ nanotube arrays (BTNAs)/Ti substrate (FBTT) anode with strong interfacial bonding (Fe-O-Ti and Fe-2-MIM-Ti coordination) was constructed using innovative in situ growth, condensation-crystallization-deposition, and pyrolysis methods, aiming at exploring the feasibility of MOFs-based anode/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) mediated PHE elimination, revealing the in-depth mechanisms, simultaneously overcoming the intrinsic drawbacks of MOFs. The FBTT-4 (doping content of 30 %) efficiently degraded PHE by 90.01 % and 74.5 % within 10 min at 350 μg/L and 3 mg/L, respectively, mediated by the ^·OH compared to the SO₄^·-, ¹O₂, and O₂^·-. Post-optimized range of anodic potential enabled (i) anodic oxidation, (ii) activation of water and PMS molecules to produce active species, (iii) capture of electrons in reactants to reduce Fe³⁺/Ti⁴⁺ to Fe²⁺/Ti³⁺, maintaining the proportion of Fe/Ti with low valence and thus stable PMS activation capacity, and (iv) regulation of the Fe/Ti d-band center to modulate the anode adsorption capacity. The further increment in anodic potential could promote "dark photocatalysis" with a Z-scheme-like mechanism. Thus, it is proposed that the development of macroscopic MOFs-based anode, especially those with small band gaps, represents vast potentials in electrocatalytic contamination elimination. Simultaneously, the MOFs-based anode is expected to fully exploit their catalytic capacities and solve their intrinsic defects as well.

Deriving convincing human health ambient water quality criteria for benzo[a]pyrene and providing basis for the water quality management: The impacts of national bioaccumulation factors and probabilistic modeling

Science-based water quality criteria are the cornerstone of water quality standards. This paper improved the methodology for the derivation of human health water quality criteria (HHWQC) and applied it for benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) to provide a scientific basis for the management of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface waters. First, the national bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) for BaP were derived using field-measured BAFs and field-measured biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs) across China, respectively, which results were comparable and demonstrated the reliability of the obtained national BAFs for BaP. The HHWQC for BaP derived using the probabilistic approach were 3.98-4.70 ng/L and were comparable with those derived by the deterministic approach, suggesting the accuracy of derived HHWQC for BaP. Through the probabilistic approach, the probability distributions of lifetime incremental cancer risk from BaP in water were provided and the consumption rates of aquatic products at trophic level 2 and 3 were identified as factors influencing risks of BaP significantly. The derived HHWQC for BaP in China are approximately 33-36 times higher than those in the United States because of the high national BAFs and cancer slope factor of BaP used for the United States. In addition, the recommended HHWQC for BaP conform to the situation in China and are approximately 1.5 times higher than the standard value of BaP in the current National Surface Water Quality Standard (GB 3838-2002) in China (2.80 ng/L), which will play an important role in the amendment of National Surface Water Quality Standard in the future. Approximately 36% of the studied surface freshwater in China contains BaP with levels exceeding the recommended HHWQC, suggesting the pollution of BaP in surface freshwater is severe and needs to be given more attention. This study is significant for the scientific development of HHWQC worldwide and the management of pollutants in water.

Adsorption of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons by Natural, Synthetic and Modified Clays

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are of major scientific concern owing to their widespread presence in environmental compartments and their potential toxicological effects on humans and biota. In this study, the adsorption capacity of natural (montmorillonite (Mt)), synthetic (Na-Mica-4), and modified (with octadecylamine and octadecyltrimethylamine (ODA-Mt, ODA-Mica-4, and ODTMA-Mt and ODTMA-Mica-4)) clays were assessed and compared for the removal of 16 PAHs. Materials were synthesized and characterized by X-Ray diffraction, Zeta potential, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The results showed its correct preparation and the incorporation of PAHs in the structure of the clays after the adsorption tests. The proposed materials were effective PAH adsorbents, with adsorption percentages close to 100%, in particular those using Mt. Mt and Na-Mica-4 presented a better adsorption capacity than their organofunctionalized derivatives, indicating that the adsorption of PAHs may occur both in the surface part and in the interlayer. The proposed adsorbents take the advantage of being a low cost and highly effective. They can be an interesting alternative for wastewater treatment and soil remediation to prevent PAH contamination.

Adsorption of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by surfactant-modified clinoptilolites for landfill leachate treatment

The authors report the potential adsorption capacities of three surfactant-modified clinoptilolites (MC)-cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC)-MC, didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB)-MC, and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMA)-MC-for the removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from aquatic environments and landfill leachate. A liquid-liquid extraction method was used to extract PAHs from water and GC/MS was used to analyse the PAHs. PAH accumulations on CPC-MC, DDAB-MC, and HDTMA-MC were linear over 21 successive batch adsorption tests for anthracene (708, 737, and 750 µg/g), fluoranthene (1355, 1583, and 1303 µg/g), fluorene (973, 1060, and 1147 µg/g), phenanthrene (844, 1057, and 989 µg/g), and pyrene (1343, 1569, and 1269 µg/g). The leachability after 21 successive accumulations was <2% for anthracene, <4% for fluoranthene, <3% for fluorene, <4% for pyrene, and <5% for phenanthrene for each adsorbent. PAH removals from landfill leachate for anthracene, fluoranthene, fluorene, phenanthrene, and pyrene were 97.8%, 98.6%, 95.7%, 97.0%, and 98.5% for CPC-MC and 99.0%, 99.6%, 98.0%, 99.0%, and 99.6% for DDAB-MC, respectively, meeting the fresh water quality standards established by British Columbia and the World Health Organization (WHO) for anthracene, fluoranthene, and fluorene. The molecular weight and molecular structure of PAHs and the hydrophobicity of adsorbents can fundamentally influence the PAH adsorption mechanism based on π-π stacking.

Hand-portable HPLC with broadband spectral detection enables analysis of complex polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are considered priority hazardous substances due to their carcinogenic activity and risk to public health. Strict regulations are in place limiting their release into the environment, but enforcement is hampered by a lack of adequate field-testing procedure, instead relying on sending samples to centralised analytical facilities. Reliably monitoring levels of PAHs in the field is a challenge, owing to the lack of field-deployable analytical methods able to separate, identify, and quantify the complex mixtures in which PAHs are typically observed. Here, we report the development of a hand-portable system based on high-performance liquid chromatography incorporating a spectrally wide absorption detector, capable of fingerprinting PAHs based on their characteristic spectral absorption profiles: identifying 100% of the 24 PAHs tested, including full coverage of the United States Environmental Protection Agency priority pollutant list. We report unsupervised methods to exploit these new capabilities for feature detection and identification, robust enough to detect and classify co-eluting and hidden peaks. Identification is fully independent of their characteristic retention times, mitigating matrix effects which can preclude reliable determination of these analytes in challenging samples. We anticipate the platform to enable more sophisticated analytical measurements, supporting real-time decision making in the field.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons: Occurrence, Electroanalysis, Challenges, and Future Outlooks

The past several decades have seen increasing concern regarding the wide distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in environmental matrices. Primary toxicological data show PAHs' persistent characteristics and possible toxicity effects. Because of this pressing global issue, electroanalytical methods have been introduced. These methods are effective for PAH determination in environmental waters, even outclassing sophisticated analytical techniques such as chromatography, conventional spectrophotometry, fluorescence, and capillary electrophoresis. Herein, the literature published on PAHs is reviewed and discussed with special regard to PAH occurrence. Moreover, the recent developments in electrochemical sensors for PAH determination and the challenges and future outlooks in this field, are also presented.

Exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in people living in urban and rural areas as revealed by hair analysis

Some polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are carcinogenic and mutagenic to humans. However, little is known about PAH exposure to people living in urban and suburban areas through comparative studies. Some studies have indicated that human hair can be used as a noninvasive biomarker of PAH exposure. Therefore, we collected hair samples from 66 volunteers from Nanjing and Ningbo, China, to detect PAH concentrations in this work. The highest levels in the hair samples were found in phenanthrene > anthracene > naphthalene among the parent PAHs. Sixteen parent PAHs showed higher concentrations in the samples from Nanjing than in the samples from Ningbo. Significantly higher levels of some PAHs were observed in male hair than in female hair in Nanjing, and in hair from smokers than in hair from non-smokers in both Nanjing and Ningbo. In addition, there was a significant effect of the age on the concentration of low-molecular-weight PAHs and ∑PAHs in human hair in both Nanjing and Ningbo. Studying the inter-chemical associations between these PAHs indicated similarities and differences between Nanjing and Ningbo.

Influence of Industrialization and Environmental Protection on Environmental Pollution: A Case Study of Taihu Lake, China

In order to quantitatively study the effect of environmental protection in China since the twenty-first century and the environmental pollution projected for the next ten years (under the model of extensive economic development), this paper establishes a Bayesian regulation back propagation neural network (BRBPNN) to analyze the typical pollutants (i.e., cadmium (Cd) and benzopyrene (BaP)) for Taihu Lake, a typical Chinese freshwater lake. For the periods 1950–2003 and 1950–2015, the neural network model estimated the BaP concentration for the database with Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency (NS) = 0.99 and 0.99 and root-mean-square error (RMSE) = 3.1 and 9.3 for the total database and the Cd concentration for the database with NS = 0.93 and 0.98 and RMSE = 45.4 and 65.7 for the total database, respectively. In the model of extensive economic development, the concentration of pollutants in the sediments of Taihu reached the maximum value at the end of the twentieth century and early twenty-first century, and there was an inflection point. After the early twenty-first century, the concentration of pollutants was controlled under various environmental policies and measures. In 2015, the environmental protection ratio of Cd and BaP reached 52% and 89%, respectively. Without environmental protection measures, the concentrations of Cd and BaP obtained from the neural network model is projected to reach 2015.5 μg kg⁻¹ and 407.8 ng g⁻¹, respectively, in 2030. Based on the results of this study, the Chinese government will need to invest more money and energy to clean up the environment.
