FRP Poles: A State-of-the-Art-Review of Manufacturing, Testing, and Modeling

Fiber-reinforced polymers poles were on the increase because they were lightweight, have high strength-to-weight ratios, provide corrosion resistance, can be customized to meet strength and deflection requirements, and have a low life-cycle cost of construction and maintenance. This research presents a comprehensive review of all significant research and existing case studies to review the present knowledge concerning fiber-reinforced polymers poles. The main summary covers 70 works focusing on fiber poles to summarize recent activities on selected relevant topics and highlight possible future implementations. In this context, this study discusses fiber-reinforced polymers poles in six aspects: (i) introduction; (ii) methodology; (iii) Materials properties of FRP poles; (iv) manufacturing techniques of FRP poles; (v) testing of FRP poles (static and dynamic flexure test as cantilever beam); (vi) modeling of FRP poles. Therefore, this critical review will demonstrate an overview of FRP Poles manufacturing techniques (Pultrusion, filament winding, centrifugal process, and hand lay-up) and which Pultrusion technique is the best suited for FRP Poles. Static modeling was the most used of other techniques.

The regime of constructed wetlands in greywater treatment

There is an excellent need for supply-side threats due to the enhanced degradation and reclamation of existing water bodies in the present scenario. This led to the global water crisis. One of the easiest ways to fulfil the growing need for freshwater is the recycling of wastewater. Greywater is a form of wastewater from households, industries, etc., with some less toxic materials. The recycling of this greywater has provoked the development of new and sustainable technologies to meet the growing water demand. Engineered constructed wetlands are considered one of the most economically practical processes to treat greywater due to its minimal footprint. In this case study, we summarize several categories of constructed wetlands, operating conditions, and the effects of biological, physical, and chemical aspects of greywater on their treatment performance. On the other hand, the effluent quality from diverse wetlands is also summarized. Furthermore, it would be better to consider that constructed wetlands' integrated performance with disinfection may improve the effluent quality to desirable standards.

Start-up and performance of a downflow fluidised bed reactor for biological treatment of yellow wastewater and nutrient recovery

The treatment of yellow water (human urine) in a downflow fluidised bed reactor (DFFBR) was investigated to evaluate biological ureolysis and nutrient recovery. The reactor was operated at 30±4 °C in batch mode, and reaction time = 1 d. The average immobilised biomass (as volatile solids, IVS) in the reactor was 2.5±0.9 g L^-1_support, and specific ureolytic activity was 121 g Urea-N g^-1 IVS d^-1. The kinetic parameters were 0.152 mol L^-1 (K_m) and 8 mol g^-1 IVS d^-1 (V_max). The ureolysis efficiency was 93.4% and chemical oxygen demand removal efficiency was 31.2%, while total ammonium nitrogen (NH₄⁺-N) production rate was 7 g L^-1 d^-1 and phosphate removal reached 26%. Precipitates recovery during biological treatment was 1.72±0.8 g. These results suggest that the treatment of yellow water in a DFFBR is a viable option for partial recovery of N and P.

Environmental impact, treatment technology and monitoring system of ship domestic sewage: A review

Marine pollution caused by the substandard discharge of domestic sewage from ships has received considerable attention in recent years. Thus, the research and application of efficient treatment and supervision system of domestic ship sewage are matters of considerable interest in marine pollution prevention. The environmental impacts of black and grey water on marine and river environments were reviewed to emphasize the urgency and importance of sewage treatment. Development and changes of emission indexes revealed the emphasis on marine environmental protection and domestic sewage discharge. Based on summarizing the difficulties of high salinity, high organic load and poor stability in ship sewage treatment, the technologies of physical-, chemical- and biochemical-based processing were reviewed. Case study of online monitoring system was displayed to provide research trends. The challenges and future perspectives were also provided to promote supervision and disposal of domestic sewage from ships.
