Conectarnos con la compasión para preservar el cuidado humanizado

Este artículo revisa la compasión como requerimiento esencial para la atención humanizada, abordando elementos definitorios desde sus raíces filosóficas y su vínculo con la práctica de la enfermería. Objetivo: reflexionar sobre la compasión como un atributo inherente al cuidado humanizado, según lo reportado en la literatura. Materiales y métodos: artículo de reflexión, para el cual se realizó una búsqueda y la revisión de literatura en bases de datos científicas especializadas, con descriptores y operadores boleanos relacionados con el tema. Resultados: se presentan elementos conceptuales útiles para adoptar la compasión como un rasgo ético que se debe promover en la formación y el trabajo académico en las áreas de ciencias de la salud y, en especial, en enfermería.

Compassionate Practices for Nurse Managers in Colombia

Objective: To recognize compassionate practices and the obstacles to their use by nurse managers in Colombia. Method: This is a mixed cross-sectional, descriptive, exploratory, international study with an online survey administered in 17 countries. Data were extracted from Colombia with a sample of 69 nurse managers. Quantitative data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, and qualitative data were processed using the Nvivo software and thematic analysis. Results: 90 % women, mainly from a hospital setting (40 %). Compassionate practices in administrative nursing involve four categories: Listening; supporting and recognizing staff individuality; defining compassion practices, needs, and benefits; receiving compassion and complementary views of compassion and administration where the influence of cultural and organizational patterns become obstacles to compassion. Conclusion: For nursing, compassion demonstrates the intentional ability to recognize the singularity of someone else’s suffering, understand their needs, offer support, and find solutions based on an understanding of what being human means. These aspects require significant changes at the organizational and health legislation levels to mitigate the obstacles to compassion.

Building Culturally Competent Compassion in Nurses Caring for Vulnerable Populations

Objective: To understand the process of building culturally competent compassion in nurses who care for vulnerable populations. Method: This is a qualitative study of a "single case study" type, developed with 18 nurses who worked in an emergency care unit in the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, between October 2020 and January 2021. Data collection was performed through individual online or one-to-one interviews, following a semi-structured script. Data were treated following thematic content analysis, proposed by Bardin. All ethical precepts were taken into account. Results: After data analysis, the following categories were created: a) Looking within: the recognition of cultural identity; b) Paths to be taken: from the gap to cultural knowledge; c) Attentive listening as essential nursing care; d) Culturally competent compassion as an infinite opportunity for growth. Final considerations: Culturally competent compassion is a subjective, complex, and essential construct in holistic nursing care. When implemented successfully, we gain a significant improvement in the quality of healthcare provided to patients and their families as well as a decrease in social inequality, and the protection of human rights.

Understanding the concept of compassion from the perspectives of nurses

BACKGROUND

The high level of satisfaction of users of a health service is largely due to the fact that they receive excellent care from healthcare professionals. Compassionate care is an essential component of excellent care. But what do nurses understand compassion to be?

RESEARCH OBJECTIVES

To analyse the concept of compassion from the perspective of nurses in the Andalusian Public Health System, Spain.

RESEARCH DESIGN

This is a qualitative study following the grounded theory model. Four focus groups and 25 in-depth interviews were conducted.

PARTICIPANTS AND RESEARCH CONTEXT

A total of 68 nursing professionals working in the Andalusian Public Health System (Spain) participated. Theoretical sampling was used, with participants being recruited using the snowball technique.

ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS

This research was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Centro-Almería Health District (CEICA 27/9/17).

FINDINGS

From the analysis of the data, four themes emerged that helped to understand the concept of compassion according to nurses: 'Negative perception of the term compassion', 'Compassion and empathy as synonyms', 'Beyond empathy', and 'Effects of having a compassionate attitude'.

DISCUSSION

Nurses perceive the concept of compassion differently to each other and even contradictorily. This concept is imbued with cultural elements, which adds confusion to understanding it, and is even perceived as something negative similar to pity.

CONCLUSION

Nurses confuse the concepts of empathy and compassion as if they were synonymous. Before considering training in compassion for healthcare professionals, it is essential to clarify the concept of compassion through educational interventions.
