Meningoencephalitis Caused by a Campylobacter fetus in a Patient with Chronic Alcoholism

[A case of recurrent Campylobacter fetus meningitis, occurring two months after the ‍initial infection was successfully treated]

A 43-year-old man was admitted to our department due to fever and headache. The cerebrospinal fluid analysis confirmed bacterial meningitis. Campylobacter species were isolated from blood cultures on the third day of admission. The patient was treated with meropenem (MEPM) and discharged on the 17th day. However, he experienced a recurrence of meningitis and was readmitted on the 68th day, initiating MEPM therapy. Campylobacter fetus was isolated from cerebrospinal fluid cultures on the 74th day. MEPM was continued until the 81st day, followed by one month of minocycline (MINO) therapy. The patient had an uneventful recovery without further recurrence. This case highlights the potential for recurrence of Campylobacter fetus meningitis approximately two months after the resolution of the initial infection. In addition to carbapenem therapy for at least two weeks, the adjunctive administration of MINO may be beneficial.

Mechanical characteristics of BMSCs-intervened sciatic nerve in chronic alcohol-intoxicated animal model

OBJECTIVE

To study the mechanical properties of sciatic nerve in rats with chronic alcoholism (CA) and intervened with bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) and to provide biomechanical basis for clinical practice.

METHODS

the serum of the BMSCs-intervened CA rats was sampled and determined the contents of malondialdehyde (MDA), metallothionein (CAS, MT), and Glutathione/r -glutamyl cysteinyl/glycine (GSH); meanwhile, the rats' sciatic nerve was tested the tensile and observed the histomorphological changes.

RESULTS

The mechanical properties of sciatic nerve in BMSCs-intervened CA rats, as well as the serum levels of MT and GSH, were significantly different from those in the basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF)-intervened CA rats (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

BMSCs intervention can restore the levels of MT, GSH, MDA, histomorphology, and tensile mechanical properties in CA animal model, and its effects on repairing sciatic nerve are obvious.

Campylobacter fetus thyroid gland abscess in a young immunocompetent woman

Campylobacter species are mostly associated with intestinal infections. Campylobacter fetus, however, can cause bacteremia and extra-intestinal infections especially in immunosuppressed patients. To the best of our knowledge, we present the second case of C. fetus causing thyroiditis and thyroid abscess in an immunocompetent young woman.
