Beneficial Effect of Minimal Interference on Item Memory But Not on Source Memory in Alzheimer's Disease

A novel and effective item-source complex trial protocol: Discrimination of guilty from both knowledgeable and unknowledgeable innocent subjects

Innocent subjects who are knowledgeable of crime-related information will often be misclassified as "guilty" in P300-based complex trial protocol (CTP). Therefore, it is necessary to develop a more rigorous CTP that can effectively discriminate the guilty from both the knowledgeable and the unknowledgeable innocents. Sometimes the guilty and the knowledgeable innocents possess the same item memories but different source memories. The present study designed a novel item-source complex trial protocol based on the differences of source memory among the three kinds of individuals. Either the crime-related probe (e.g., the stolen ring) or one of the crime-unrelated stimuli (e.g., watch, earring, bracelet, or bangle) (item memory) was presented in the first part of each trail, and either a stealing-source word (e.g., stole) or other-source word (e.g., fetched) (source memory) was presented in the second part of each trail. The results showed that: (1) the P300 evoked by item memory could effectively discriminated the guilty from the unknowledgeable innocent (AUC = 0.76) but failed to effectively discriminate the guilty from the knowledgeable innocent (AUC = 0.60); (2) the late positive component evoked by source memory could effectively discriminated the guilty from both the knowledgeable innocent (AUC = 0.94) and the unknowledgeable innocent (AUC = 0.84) in one test.

Can the RAVLT predict deterioration from MCI to dementia? Data from long term follow up

OBJECTIVE

To assess whether the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) could differentiate deterioration from Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) to dementia.

METHODS

Twenty-six participants who were diagnosed with MCI performed the RAVLT and the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) at baseline and after nearly a decade (M = 8.8 years, SD = 3.16), in order to evaluate whether they progressed to dementia.

RESULTS

Twelve participants [5 males, 7 females; age M = 63.7 (7.7)] kept their diagnoses of MCI; 14 participants [11 males, 3 females; age M = 75.0 (6.5)] converted to dementia. Both groups had similar MMSE scores at baseline [26.6 (0.6); and 26.6 (0.7) respectively]. Significant differences between dementia and MCI groups were found on most measures of the RAVLT at baseline: Immediate memory [p = .04], delayed recall [p = .003], total learning [p = .01], learning rate [p = .002], retrieval efficiency [p = .004], and false alarms [p = .004]. Thus, the RAVLT results were significantly worse at baseline in those who later converted. The results remain the same when controlling for age.

CONCLUSION

The results extend previous findings with follow-up of nearly a decade demonstrating that most of the RAVLT measures are sensitive to differentiate conversion from MCI to dementia.

Patterns of single-neuron activity during associative recognition memory in the human medial temporal lobe

Electrophysiological activity in medial temporal lobe (MTL) structures is pivotal for declarative long-term memory. Single-neuron and microcircuit findings capitalizing on human microwire recordings from the medial temporal lobe are still fragmentary. In particular, it is an open question whether identical or different groups of neurons participate in different memory functions. Here, we investigated category-specific responses in the human MTL based on single-neuron recordings in presurgical epilepsy patients performing an associative long-term memory task. Additionally, auditory beat stimuli were presented during encoding and retrieval to modulate memory performance. We describe the proportion of neurons in amygdala, entorhinal cortex, hippocampus and parahippocampal cortex belonging to different response classes. These entail neurons coding stimulus-familiarity, neurons coding successful item memory, and neurons coding associated source memory, as well as the overlap between these classes. As major results we demonstrate that neurons responding to stimulus familiarity (old/new effect) can be identified in the MTL even when using previously known rather than entirely novel stimulus material (words). We observed a significant overlap between familiarity-related neurons and neurons coding item retrieval (remembered/forgotten effect). The largest fraction of familiarity-related neurons was found in the parahippocampal cortex, and a considerable fraction of all parahippocampal neurons was related to successful item retrieval. Neurons related to successful source retrieval were different from the neurons coding the associated information. Most importantly, there was no overlap between neurons coding item memory and those coding associated source memory strongly suggesting that these functions are facilitated by different sets of neurons.
