Detection Method of Environmentally Friendly Non-POP PBDEs by Derivatization-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Using the Pharmacophore Model

Improved microalgae carbon fixation and microplastic sedimentation in the lake through in silico method

The impact of microplastics in lake water environments on microalgae carbon fixation and microplastic sedimentation has attracted global attention. The molecular dynamic simulation method was used to design microplastic additive proportioning schemes for improving microalgae carbon fixation and microplastic sedimentation. Results showed that the harm of microplastics can be effectively alleviated by adjusting the proportioning scheme of plastic additives. Besides, the decabromodiphenyl oxide (DBDPO) was identified as the main additive that affect the microalgae carbon fixation and microplastic sedimentation. Thus, a molecular modification based on CiteSpace visual analysis was firstly used and 12 DBDPO derivatives were designed. After the screening, DBDPO-2 and DBDPO-5 became the environmentally friendly DBDPO alternatives, with the highest microalgae carbon fixation and microplastic sedimentation ability enhancement of over 25 %. Compared to DBDPO, DBDPO derivatives were found easier to stimulate the adsorption and binding ability of surrounding hotspot amino acids to CO2 and ribulose-5-phosphate, increasing the solvent-accessible surface area of microplastics, thus improving the microalgae carbon fixation and microplastic sedimentation ability. This study provides theoretical support for simultaneously promoting the microalgae carbon fixation and microplastic sedimentation in the lake water environment and provides scientific basis for the protection and sustainable development of lake water ecosystem.

Prediction of adsorption capacity and biodegradability of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in soil

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are widely used brominated flame retardants with strong toxicity concerns. Understanding the behaviors of PBDEs in soil is essential to evaluate their environmental impact. However, the limited, incoherent, and inaccurate data has challenged predicting the adsorption capacity and biodegradability of all 209 PBDE congeners in the soil. Moreover, there are minimal studies regarding the interactions between adsorption and biodegradation behaviors of PBDEs in the soil. Herein, in this study, we adopted quantitative structure-property relationship (QSAR) modeling to predict the adsorption behavior of 209 PBDE congeners by estimating their organic carbon-water partition coefficient (K_OC) values. In addition, the biodegradability of commonly occurring PBDE congeners was evaluated by analyzing their affinity to extracellular enzymes responsible for biodegradation using molecular docking. The results highlight that the degree of bromination plays a significant role in both the absorption and biodegradation of PBDEs in the soil due to compound stability and molecular geometry. Our findings help to advance the knowledge on PBDE behaviors in the soil and facilitate PBDE remediation associated with a soil environment.

Inevitable human exposure to emissions of polybrominated diphenyl ethers: A perspective on potential health risks

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) serve as flame retardants in many household materials such as electrical and electronic devices, furniture, textiles, plastics, and baby products. Though the use of PBDEs like penta-, octa- and deca-BDE greatly reduces the fire damage, indoor pollution by these toxic emissions is ever-growing. In fact, a boom in the global market projections of PBDEs threatens human health security. Therefore, efforts are made to minimize PBDEs pollution in USA and Europe by encouraging voluntary phasing out of the production or imposing compelled regulations through Stockholm Convention, but >500 kilotons of PBDEs still exist globally. Both 'environmental persistence' and 'bioaccumulation tendencies' are the hallmarks of PBDE toxicities; however, both these issues concerning household emissions of PBDEs have been least addressed theoretically or practically. Critical physiological functions, lipophilicity and toxicity, trophic transfer and tissue specificities are of utmost importance in the benefit/risk assessments of PBDEs. Since indoor debromination of deca-BDE often yields many products, a better understanding on their sorption propensity, environmental fate and human toxicities is critical in taking rigorous measures on the ever-growing global deca-BDE market. The data available in the literature on human toxicities of PBDEs have been validated following meta-analysis. In this direction, the intent of the present review was to provide a critical evaluation of the key aspects like compositional patterns/isomer ratios of PBDEs implicated in bioaccumulation, indoor PBDE emissions versus human exposure, secured technologies to deal with the toxic emissions, and human toxicity of PBDEs in relation to the number of bromine atoms. Finally, an emphasis has been made on the knowledge gaps and future research directions related to endurable flame retardants which could fit well into the benefit/risk strategy.
