Abstract
This study compared the effects of different final irrigation protocols on the mechanical properties and structural integrity of root dentine. One-hundred eight teeth were instrumented and irrigated with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) using conventional irrigation (CI). Teeth were distributed into four groups based on final irrigation protocols: Control Group (CG): 17%EDTA/CI + H2O; G1: 2.5%NaOCl/Passive Ultrasonic Irrigation (PUI) + EDTA/PUI + NaOCl/PUI (60s each); G2: EDTA/PUI + NaOCl/PUI (30s each); G3: EDTA/PUI + NaOCl/PUI + H2O/PUI + CHX/PUI (30s each). Four tests were conducted: three-point flexural strength test, Scanning Electron Microscopy analysis, microhardness assessment, and the push-out bond strength (POBS) of the filling material to the root dentine. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey tests (Flexural strength), and Student t-test (Microhardness). Erosion scores and POBS were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests (α = 0.05). Results indicated no significant differences in flexural strength (p > 0.05) among groups. CG exhibited the lowest erosion scores in the cervical third. In the middle third, CG had lower scores than G1 and G2, while in the apical third, CG had lower scores than G1 (p < 0.05). Microhardness values decreased following the protocols (p < 0.05), except for the CG (p > 0.05). G2 displayed higher POBS values in the middle and apical thirds (p < 0.05). The protocols did not significantly influence the flexural strength of root dentine. However, they did affect microhardness and promoted greater erosion. The best results for POBS were observed when the final irrigation involved the sequential use of EDTA and NaOCl employing PUI for 30 seconds in each solution.

Abstract
This study aimed to identify the chemical composition resulting from the chemical interaction between calcium hypochlorite [Ca(OCl)2] and chlorhexidine (CHX) using different 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry (NMR), correlated two-dimensional spectroscopy (2D COSY), heteronuclear single quantum coherence (HSQC), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) experiments. The 5.25% Ca(OCl)2 was mixed with 2% CHX in a 1:1 ratio, obtaining an orange-brown precipitate that was filtered, washed in ultrapure water, dried and characterized by 1H and 13C NMR, 2D COSY, HSQC and FTIR. One-dimensional and two-dimensional NMR spectra demonstrated the chemical changes around the protons and carbon atoms of the initial CHX and after reacted with Ca(OCl)2. These techniques and FTIR show that the interaction generated two by-products from the degradation of CHX, none of which were parachloroaniline (PCA) despite both products obtained being substituted benzene compounds. Using NMR and FTIR data together with a previously proposed catalytic cleavage degradation mechanism for CHX, the products appear to be parachlorophenylurea (PCU) and parachlorophenylguanidyl-1,6-diguanidyl-hexane (PCGH). Therefore, this in vitro study demonstrated that the precipitate formed from the chemical interaction between Ca(OCl)₂ and CHX results in two by-products, PCU and PCGH, neither of which is PCA. Due to the absence of cytotoxicity studies on the products generated from the combination of Ca(OCl)₂ and CHX, an intermediate rinse with an inert solution is recommended to remove these compounds from the root canals.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION To evaluate the push-out bond strength (POBS) of AH Plus sealer to root dentin and the adhesive interface quality after calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) intracanal dressing removal with different final irrigation protocols. METHOD After root canal instrumentation and irrigation, 40 root canals were filled with Ca(OH)2 and sealed. After 14 days, the specimens were randomly distributed according to the irrigation protocols for Ca(OH)2 removal (n = 10): GH2O (control) - distilled water; GNaOCl - 1% NaOCl; GEDTA - 17% EDTA; GEDTA + NaOCl - 17% EDTA + 1% NaOCl. The root canals were filled with AH Plus sealer and gutta-percha. After 7 days, the roots were sectioned into dentin slices and submitted to POBS test and analysis of the adhesive interface under scanning electron microscope. The POBS data were statistically evaluated (analysis of variance and Tukey test). The Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests were used to analyze the adhesive interface (α = 0.05). RESULTS GH2O, GNaOCl, and GEDTA + NaOCl had similar POBS values, with higher values on the apical third, in comparison with other thirds (P < .05). A homogeneous and free-of-gaps adhesive interface was observed for GH2O, GNaOCl, and GEDTA + NaOCl, with difference between GH2O and GEDTA (P < .05). GH2O and GEDTA + NaOCl presented higher sealer tags formation (P < .05). CONCLUSION The final rinse with EDTA for Ca(OH)2 dressing removal had a negative effect on the POBS of the filling material to root dentin. The use of EDTA followed by NaOCl had results similar to the distilled water, providing uniform and free-of-gaps adhesive interface, and a higher number of sealer tags.

Abstract
The interaction of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX) produces an orange-brown precipitate. The present study evaluated the influence of distilled water (H2 O) in different irrigation protocols designed to prevent the formation of precipitate with NaOCl and CHX. Fifty canine teeth were instrumented and split longitudinally. The canal was examined with a stereomicroscope and photographed by canal-thirds. The tooth halves were repositioned and distributed randomly into five groups, according to the final irrigation protocol (n = 10): G1 (control)-Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) + NaOCl + CHX, conventional irrigation (CI); G2-EDTA + NaOCl + CHX, activated with passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI); G3-EDTA (PUI) + NaOCl (PUI) + H2 O (CI) + CHX (PUI); G4-EDTA + NaOCl + H2 O + CHX (PUI); G5-EDTA (PUI) + NaOCl (PUI) + H2 O (continuous ultrasonic irrigation [CUI]) + CHX (PUI). The specimens were evaluated with a stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy analysis was performed to identify the elemental profile of the irrigated canal walls. The images were scored according to the extensiveness of precipitate. Data were analyzed (Kruskal-Wallis test, α = 5%). Under the stereomicroscope, G1 had significantly higher scores than all the other groups in all canal-thirds (p < .05). All four experimental groups showed similar scores (p > .05). There were no significant differences in precipitate formation among root-thirds in intragroup analysis (p > .05). Upon SEM examination, overall, only G5 had lower scores than G1 (p < .05). Analysis by canal-thirds showed no significant difference among groups and among canal-thirds in the intragroup analysis (p > .05). G1 showed high Cl peaks. In-between irrigation with H2 O activated by CUI is effective in preventing precipitate formation during canal debridement with NaOCl and CHX. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: Continuous ultrasonic irrigation with distilled water was capable to prevent the precipitate formation. The precipitate can be classified as a chemical smear layer.

Abstract
In recent years, sodium hypochlorite and chlorhexidine digluconate have been the gold standard of irrigation solutions utilized within the disinfection protocol during root canal treatments. Nowadays, it is known that, during chemical disinfection of the root canal, consecutive application of sodium hypochlorite and chlorhexidine digluconate leads to the formation of an orange-brown precipitate. This precipitate is described as being chemically similar to para-chloroaniline, which is suspected to have cytotoxic and carcinogenic effects. Concerns also exist regarding its influence on the leakage of root canal fillings, coronal restorations, and tooth discoloration. The purpose of this article is to review the literature on the interaction of sodium hypochlorite and chlorhexidine digluconate on the tooth and its surrounding tissues, and to discuss the effect of the precipitate formed during root canal treatment. We further address options to avoid the formation of the precipitate and describe alternative irrigation solutions that should not interact with sodium hypochlorite or chlorhexidine digluconate.

Abstract
This study compared the effect of intermediate flush with distilled water delivered by conventional irrigation, EndoVac microcannula or Self-Adjusting File (SAF) system in the prevention of chemical smear layer (CSL) formation. Thirty human premolars were used. Canals were prepared with Reciproc system and 5.25% NaOCl. After chemomechanical preparation, samples were divided in 3 groups (n=10) according to the intermediate irrigation protocol with distilled water using: conventional irrigation, EndoVac microcannula or SAF. A final flush with 2% chlorhexidine solution was used and scanning electron microscopy was performed to assess protocol effectiveness. Two calibrated evaluators attributed scores according the presence or absence of CSL on the surface of the root canal walls at the coronal, middle and apical thirds, as follows: (1) no CSL; (2) small amounts of CSL; (3) moderate CSL; and (4) heavy CSL. Differences between protocols were analyzed with Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests. Friedman and Wilcoxon signed rank tests were used for comparison between each root canal third. SAF resulted in less formation of CSL when compared with the conventional irrigation and EndoVac microcannula (p<0.05). When root canal thirds were analyzed, conventional irrigation and EndoVac groups showed less CSL formation at coronal and middle thirds in comparison to the apical third (p<0.05). In SAF group, there was no difference among the thirds (p>0.05). It may be concluded that an intermediate flush of distilled water, delivered by the SAF system resulted in a better reduction of CSL formation during chemomechanical preparation.

Abstract
Introduction: Quoting an article in well-known textbooks is held as a credit for that paper. The numbers of Iranian publications mentioned in endodontic textbooks have increased during recent years. The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the number of Iranian articles quoted in eminent endodontic textbooks. Methods and Materials: Three known textbooks (Ingle’s Endodontics, Seltzer and Bender’s Dental Pulp and Cohen’s Pathways of the Pulp) were chosen and all the editions of the textbooks since 2000 were investigated for quoted Iranian publications. Only Iranian authors with affiliations from a domestic university were chosen. All references at the end of each chapter were read by hand searching, and results were noted. The trend and percentage of Iranian publications in different editions of the textbooks were also calculated. The number of citations of these publications in Google Scholar and Scopus databases were also obtained. Results: The number of Iranian publications in all well-known textbooks have notably increased since 2000. The number and percentage of Iranian publications in the latest edition of Cohen’s Pathways of the Pulp was higher compared to other textbooks as well as the previous edition of the same text. Conclusion: Number and percentage of Iranian publications in the field of endodontics in all three textbooks have remarkably increased since 2000.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES The success of root canal treatment depends on proper debridement, instrumentation, proper accessibility, and proper restoration. The presence of a smear layer is considered to be a significant factor. This in vitro study was conducted to assess the effect of the presence/absence of a smear layer on the microleakage of root canal filled teeth using different instruments and obturation methods. MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred extracted mandibular premolars with closed apices and single roots were chosen and then divided into six groups, A to F, consisting of 15 teeth each. The control group included 10 teeth; 5 positive and 5 negative. The teeth were decoronated at the cementoenamel junction. Groups A, B, C, and D were instrumented with engine-driven rotary Protaper NiTi files. Groups E and F were instrumented with conventional stainless steel hand files. Groups A, C, and E were flushed with 3 ml of 17% EDTA to remove the smear layer prior to obturation. All teeth were flushed with 5.25% sodium hypochlorite solution and obturated with AH-Plus sealer with lateral condensation technique for Groups C, D, E, F and with thermoplasticized gutta-percha technique for Groups A and B. Using an electrochemical technique, leakages in the obturated canals were assessed for 45 days. The results were tabulated using Student's t-test (paired and unpaired t-test) with the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences Software Version 21 (IBM Company, New York, USA). RESULTS Group A showed the lowest mean value at intervals of 10, 20, 30, and 45 days. There was no current flow in the negative controls during the test period. There was leakage in the positive controls within a few minutes of immersion. CONCLUSION The results showed that rotary instrumentation contributed toward an exceptional preparation of root canals compared to hand instrumentation. Elimination of the smear layer enhanced the resistance to microleakage; thermoplasticized gutta-percha obturation technique produced a better seal compared to the lateral condensation technique.
