Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study postural changes, taking into account different mandibular positions and the cephalic and plantar body segments. METHODS A cross-sectional, descriptive, clinical, and observational study was carried out on 76 patients, (mean age 28.79 years), in whom body posture and plantar support were evaluated in the maximum mandibular intercuspal position and the mandibular rest position without dental contact. RESULTS When the mandibular position was altered, 71.01% of the patients showed changes in the bipupillary line (p = 0.008), while those who did not show such changes did, however, show changes in plantar support. More than 85% of the sample experienced alterations in the plantar plane when the mandibular position was changed, with statistically significant results (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION There is a positive relationship between the different segments in body posture. In the sample, changes in plantar support with respect to the different mandibular positions were noticeable.

Abstract
Purpose With girls typically exhibiting higher rates of myopia than boys, however, the mechanisms behind this gender difference remain unclear. This study aims to investigate the gender disparities in the relationship between myopia, sleep duration, physical activity, and BMI. Patients and Methods A total of 3138 primary and secondary school students were included. Mplus 8.3 was used to perform the multiple mediation analysis. Results Sleep duration was indicated to directly affect myopia (β=0.273, 95% CI=0.184-0.356) and through physical activity, BMI, physical activity and BMI three significantly mediation pathways, respectively. In terms of gender, the mediating direct effect of sleep duration on myopia of boys was 66.96%, which is much higher than that of girls' 50.91%. And the mediating indirect effect of sleep duration on myopia through physical activity and BMI are 32.65% and 12.10% respectively among girls, both of which are significantly higher than that of boys. Conclusion The study found that there are significant differences in the impact of sleep duration on myopia in children and adolescents of different genders. In this regard, while paying attention to the sleep duration of children and adolescents, special attention should also be paid to the indirect impact of girls' physical activity and BMI on myopia, and targeted measures should be formulated according to children of different genders to effectively protect the eye health of children and adolescents.

Abstract
Introduction Asymmetric electromyographic (EMG) activity during teeth clenching has been linked to cognitive impairment, as evaluated by the Spinnler-Tognoni matrices test, and to asymmetric pupil size (anisocoria). Anisocoria indicates an asymmetric Locus Coeruleus activity, leading to an asymmetric hemispheric excitability worsening cognitive performance. Bite splint wearing corrects EMG asymmetry, reduces anisocoria and improves cognitive performance. This study explores the possible effect of EMG asymmetry on oculomotor behavior during text reading. Methods In subjects showing different degrees of EMG asymmetry during clenching, the number and duration of fixation periods during a reading task, performed under two different occlusal conditions were analyzed. The first lecture was executed with a dental impression (imprint) interposed between the dental arches (corrected condition) and the second one with the arches in direct contact (habitual condition), without clenching effort. The imprint reduced the EMG asymmetries during clenching. Results In both occlusal conditions, total reading time correlated with duration of fixations, but not with their number. An inverse relation was observed between the number of fixations and their duration across individuals. Fixation frequency and duration were positively and negatively correlated with the amplitude of EMG asymmetry, respectively. Differently, total reading time was not related to the EMG asymmetry. When switching from the corrected to the habitual condition, an increase in the number of fixations and a reduction in their duration was observed, while total reading time could be either increased or decreased. An increased fixation frequency was observed in most of the subjects, while a reduced duration only among individuals with shorter reading times in habitual condition. Discussion In the habitual condition, EMG asymmetry influences reading patterns (more saccades/shorter fixations, less saccades/longer fixations) in our sample. The changes in text reading behavior elicited by occlusal correction can be explained by assuming that occlusal disharmony negatively interferes with the reading task by increasing the number of saccades necessary for text scanning. This finding may also indicate an increased difficulty in processing of visual information. The potential involvement of trigeminal pathways in the relation between occlusal factors and oculomotor control is discussed.

Abstract
Physical activity is essential for healthy aging. This study aimed to identify an association between physical performance, body fat percentage (%BF), and the perception of oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in independent older adults. METHOD A group of active older adults was selected from a government-sponsored reunion center in Mexico City. OHRQoL was assessed using the General Oral Health Index (GOHAI), and nutritional status was assessed using the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) tool. A short physical performance battery (SPPB) was applied, and, for body composition, DXA (dual X-ray absorptiometry) was conducted. Data were analyzed using logistic regression models, and marginal probabilities were obtained. RESULTS This study involved 366 participants; their mean age was 73.9 (±6.2) years, and 24.9% had type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). OHRQoL information revealed that pain or discomfort in the oral cavity was perceived by 63.9% of the older adults during the previous three months. The SPPB score was low in 159 (43.44%) participants. The logistic regression model revealed that age (OR = 1.13, p < 0.001), T2DM (OR = 2.10, p = 0.009), the risk of malnutrition/malnutrition (OR = 1.76, p = 0.047), high %BF (OR = 1.09, <0.001), and poor OHRQoL (OR = 1.96, p = 0.009) were associated with deteriorated physical performance. CONCLUSION OHRQoL self-perception, excess body fat, and nutritional status impacted physical performance. Aging well requires a comprehensive approach.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to pharmacologically induce accommodative paralysis and evaluate its effects on the bioelectrical activity of the muscular system. The study included two participant groups: those with myopia and those with normal vision (emmetropes). Electromyographic assessments were performed using the Noraxon Ultium DTS 8-K MR 3 myo Muscle Master Edition system. The muscles analyzed in this study were the temporalis, masseter, sternocleidomastoid, trapezius, abdominal muscles, biceps brachii, and the external oblique muscles of the abdomen. It is important to acknowledge that, based on the current findings, it cannot be definitively stated that the observed effects have clinical significance, and additional studies are encouraged.

Abstract
The main aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of painful muscle form of temporomandibular disorders and myopia on the connections between the visual organ, the bioelectrical activity and sensitivity of the masticatory and cervical muscles, and sleep quality. Subjects were divided into 4 groups (Myopia & TMDs, Myopia (Without TMDs), Emmetropic & TMDs and Emmetropic (Without TMDs)). The study was conducted in the following order of assessment: examination for temporomandibular disorders, assessment of the muscle activity by electromyograph, pressure pain thresholds examination, ophthalmic examination and completion of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. It was observed that the Myopia & TMDs group had higher muscle tenderness, higher resting and lower functional muscle bioelectrical activity. The visual organ is clinical related to the masticatory and cervical muscles. TMDs and myopia alter masticatory and cervical muscle activity. The thickness of the choroid in people with myopia is related to muscle tenderness. TMDs and myopia impair sleep quality. It is recommended to determine the number of people with refractive error and its magnitude in the sEMG study in order to be able to replicate the research methodology.

Abstract
Accommodation is a phenomenon of the eyeball, which consists of adapting to view objects at different distances. The main aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of accommodations on the musculoskeletal system in myopic and emmetropic subjects. To date, the effect of accommodative paralysis on the musculoskeletal system has not been studied. The research hypothesis based on the current research reports is that accommodation affects the musculoskeletal system in myopic and emmetropic subjects. A smaller aim of the study is to evaluate the effect of unilateral accommodative palsy on the musculoskeletal system in myopic and emmetropic subjects. According to the authors of the previous reports, unilateral accommodative palsy will affect increased musculoskeletal asymmetry in myopic and emmetropic subjects. The surface electromyography (sEMG) of the musculoskeletal system will be performed by using the Noraxon Ultium DTS 8-K MR 3 myo Muscle Master Edition. Cycloftyal (10 mg/ml, eye drops, solution) will be used to paralyze accommodation. After the paralysis of unilateral accommodation, the test will be repeated. Both-sided accommodation will be paralyzed next, and the test will be repeated. The study may provide insight into the effects of accommodation on the musculoskeletal system, and it may also help in understanding the connections between these systems.

Abstract
Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are a group of pathologies that affect the temporomandibular joint and its related structures, producing intracapsular and muscular pathologies. The aim of this study is to describe, by electromagnetic articulography (EMA) and simultaneous electromyography (sEMG), the mandibular postural position and mouth opening in healthy patients and with articular and/or muscular pathology. MATERIALS AND METHODS A pilot study was conducted with a sample of sixteen participants aged 18 years or older who attended the TMDs and Orofacial Pain Polyclinic of the University of La Frontera due to TMDs. The physiological inoculation space was evaluated from the mandibular postural position (MPP) with swallowing command and without command, in both healthy patients and patients with articular, muscular, and mixed TMDs, measured simultaneously with EMA and sEMG. An angular measurement of the oral opening was also performed with the data obtained. RESULTS The physiological inoculation space was obtained from the determination of the MPP through the procedures with swallowing command and without command, and different mouth opening degrees were evaluated. CONCLUSIONS Simultaneous position and sEMG records can be produced from EMA, and different characterization variables such as the vertical distance, Euclidean distance, and angle can be obtained.

Abstract
(1) Background: Myopia is one of the most common refractive errors in the world. The aim of this study was to evaluate the transverse dimensions of selected masticatory muscles (temporalis muscle and masseter muscle) versus the transverse dimensions of selected extraocular muscles (superior rectus, inferior rectus, medial rectus and lateral rectus) in emmetropic and high myopic subjects. (2) Methods: Twenty-seven individuals were included in the analysis, resulting in 24 eyeballs of patients with high myopia and 30 eyeballs of emmetropic subjects. A 7 Tesla resonance was used to analyze the described muscles. (3) Results: Statistical analysis showed differences in all analyzed extraocular muscles and all analyzed masticatory muscles between emmetropic subjects and high myopic subjects. In the high myopic subject group, statistical analysis showed four correlations. The three negative correlations were between the lateral rectus muscle and an axial length eyeball, refractive error and an axial length eyeball, and the inferior rectus muscle and visual acuity. The positive correlation was between the lateral rectus muscle and the medial rectus muscle. (4) Conclusions: The high myopic subjects are characterized by a larger cross-sectional area of extraocular muscles and masticatory muscles compared to the emmetropic subjects. Correlations were observed between the thickness of the extraocular muscles and the masticatory muscles. The lateral rectus muscle was related to the length of the eyeball. The phenomenon requires further study.

Abstract
This systematic review aimed to identify the main tools used to analyze the relationship between the postural and stomatognathic systems. The study followed the PRISMA guidelines, and data were collected from Science Direct and PubMed databases to identify articles published until December 2022. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 26 articles were selected from the initial 903 articles. The selected articles were full-text studies in English or Romanian, examining the relationship between dental occlusion and posture, measuring postural parameters using various tools, implementing occlusal changes, evaluating patients with permanent dentition, or analyzing the connection between occlusion and posture in a unidirectional manner. The findings indicate that orthognathic surgery and orthodontic mouthguards can significantly enhance postural balance and athletic performance. In addition, 63% of the studies concluded that varying modifications and occlusal conditions impact posture. Notable differences exist concerning posture and Angle dental occlusion classes, and different occlusal devices used to simulate malocclusion can affect patients' postural systems in response to external stimuli. The stabilometry platform is the predominant method for measuring postural parameters; however, other researchers have employed raster stereography, photogrammetry, mobile phone apps, and the Fukuda-Unterberger test. Consequently, interventions targeting the stomatognathic system should consider potential variations in the postural system.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Myopia is one of the most common eye disorders involving abnormal focusing of light rays. The studies recognize the association between the stomatognathic and visual systems. This compound may have a neurological basis associated with disorders such as central sensitization. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of central sensitization on the bioelectrical activity of selected muscles of the masticatory organ in subjects with myopia. METHODS Selected masticatory and cervical spine muscles were analyzed using an eight-channel BioEMG III electromyograph. Central sensitization was analyzed using the central sensitization inventory. RESULTS Statistical analysis revealed significantly higher scores on the central sensitization inventory in subjects with axial myopia compared to subjects without refractive error. Repeated positive correlations were observed in the sternocleidomastoid muscle activity and negative correlations in the digastric muscle activity during open and closed eyes in myopic subjects. CONCLUSIONS Subjects with myopia have an increased score in the central sensitization inventory. The increase in the central sensitization inventory score is connected with the changes within the electromyographic activity of the masticatory and neck muscles. The effect of central sensitization on masticatory muscle activity in myopic subjects requires further study.

Abstract
Purpose The objective of the present study was to determine the accuracy of T-scan system and Cerec Omnicam system with respect to the evaluation of occlusal contact by quantitatively comparing the occlusal contact areas and the overlapping ratios of occlusal contact areas obtained from these systems. Material and methods The occlusal contact of 20 adolescents with normal occlusion was measured with the T-scan system and the Cerec Omnicam system, respectively. The occlusal contact areas in the intercuspal position were then quantified with Adobe Photoshop CS6 Software. The same procedure was repeated for each subject using with 8 μm articulating paper as the control group. The overlapping ratio of T-scan system and Cerec Omnicam system was calculated respectively, which is defined as the ratio of overlapping areas comparing with those obtained from articulating paper. To examine the accuracy of T-scan system and Cerec Omnicam system, the Paired t-test was applied. The reproducibility of T-scan system was evaluated with Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-ranks test by comparing the occlusal contact areas between two repeated measurements. In all statistical analysis, the level of significance was set to α = 0.05. Results Results demonstrated measured occlusal contact areas were significantly different between those obtained between T-scan system and Cerec Omnicam system (P < 0.05). The tooth position of two-dimensional virtual dental arch established by T-scan system based on the width of the central incisor was in disagreement with the actual tooth position. The overlapping ratios obtained from Cerec Omnicam system were higher than those obtained from the T-Scan system (P < 0.05). The sensitivity of T-Scan system in anterior teeth area decreased when sensors are used more than once (P < 0.05). Conclusions In the intercuspal position, the accuracy of Cerec Omnicam system for occlusal contact assessment is higher than that of T-scan system. The T-scan system demonstrates good reproducibility in the premolar region and the molar region, but poor reproducibility in the anterior teeth region. Clinical implications In the intercuspal position, Cerec Omnicam system is more accurate than T-scan system, which can quantitatively analyze occlusal relationship in terms of number, position, size and distribution of occlusal contact points. When evaluating occlusal contacts, the accuracy of T-scan system in anterior teeth region is significantly lower than that of premolar and molar regions.

Abstract
The study aimed to analyze the changes within the bioelectrical activity of the cervical spine and masticatory muscles during the change of visual stimulus—open and closed eyes test. After applying the inclusion criteria, 50 subjects were included in the study, with visual impairment ranging from −0.5 to −5.75 Diopters. Four muscle pairs were analyzed: the anterior part of the temporalis muscle (TA), the superficial part of the masseter muscle (MM), the anterior belly of the digastric muscle (DA), and the middle part of the sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM) belly during rest, teeth clenching, teeth clenching on dental cotton rollers, and active mouth opening. Statistical analysis showed a significant decrease in the bioelectrical activity during teeth clenching of all analyzed muscles during the closed eyes test. Significant decreases of electromyographic values were also observed during resting activity within TA muscles, during teeth clenching with dental cotton rollers within SCM and DA muscles, and during active mouth opening within the right masseter. Changing the visual stimulus from open eyes to closed eyes in people with myopia affects the bioelectrical activity of the masticatory and cervical spine muscles.

Abstract
Some authors have demonstrated that proprioceptive stimuli applied on the feet soles can interfere on the ocular muscles. However, these studies do not clarify possible functional differences between the dominant eye and the non-dominant eye. The purpose of this randomised study is to establish if the positioning of an Internal Heel Wedge (IHW) and an External Heel Wedge (EHW) can modify horizontal heterophoria, determine dissimilar behaviours between the dominant eye and the non-dominant eye. Forty-two healthy subjects, with a right dominant eye, were tested. The 1.5 mm-thick proprioceptive stimuli were shaped out of a cork half-moon. The experimental group was divided into two groups: IHW group and EHW group. Both groups performed the "Baseline" (without mechanical stimulation) and "After 15'" (following a fitting period of 15 minutes on a treadmill with mechanical stimulation) trials. The control group performed the same trials without any podalic stimulation. Meaningful changes were observed on the horizontal heterophoria of the non-dominating eye with an IHW. Non-statistically significant variations were observed with an EHW and in the Control group. A thin heel wedge applied on the foot sole was able to generate functional changes in the non-dominant eye and could help health professionals develop increasingly personalised rehabilitation programmes.

Abstract
Introduction. Temporomandibular disease (TMD) is a general term including a group of conditions that cause pain and dysfunction in the masticatory muscles, the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), and their related structures. The painful forms of these dysfunctions have become an increasing phenomenon among dental patients. A number of scientific publications indicated the relationship between the presence of postural dysfunctions and functional disorders of the masticatory system in humans. Nevertheless, dental procedures still very rarely include comprehensive diagnostics and procedures aimed at the normalization of the locomotor system related to TMD. Scientific literature usually refers to and describes the coexistence of postural disorders in patients with TMD in the context of anatomical connections, the so-called biokinematic chains, indicating specific types of postures that correlate with different positions of the mandible and/or teeth. Objective. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of painless positioning of the mandibular head in the articular fossa on postural and functional changes in the musculoskeletal system. Materials and Methods. The study was conducted on a group of 30 randomly selected patients who reported to the Department of Propaedeutic, Physical Diagnostics and Dental Physiotherapy of the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin (Poland). Before the examination, the dentists and the physiotherapist were calibrated by an examiner who had previously been calibrated and had three years of experience in the management of patients with TMD. Training of the appropriate palpation strength was performed, and then the results were discussed. In the study group, painful disorders in the temporomandibular joint with an abnormal position of the mandibular head in the articular fossa and individual posture defects were found. The patients complained of pain in the area of the TMJ, episodes of locked joints, and difficulty biting. None of them was treated for these disorders, previously rehabilitated or participated in any body posture examination. The patients were examined by an interdisciplinary team who also performed a preliminary test. The inclusion criterion for the study group was the presence of TMD symptoms in the past. Myofascial pain was diagnosed on the basis of diagnostic criteria for temporomandibular disorders (RDC/TMD Ia and Ib). On the other hand, the displacement of the articular disc was diagnosed on the basis of the diagnostic criteria of temporomandibular disorders (RDC/TMD IIa)—displacement of the articular disc without reduction. At the same time, the body posture was assessed by inspection and using computer techniques while standing and during motion. The examinations were repeated after positioning the mandibular heads in the articular fossa and stabilizing the condylar process using a temporary silicone occlusal splint. Since there is no DC/TMD protocol in Polish to date, RDC/TMD was used in the study. Results. Initial pilot studies and the authors’ observations indicated that the positioning of the mandibular heads in the articular pits and stabilization of the condylar process by providing the oral cavity with a temporary, silicone occlusive splint significantly influenced the posture of the examined patients, both while standing and during locomotion. This correlation also applies to the corrective effect on the foot architecture during standing and patient gait. Conclusions. Diagnostic and therapeutic management in the course of TMD should be holistic. Nevertheless, the observed changes are often varied and largely dependent on individual posture defects, which is an important postulate for further research on a larger study group.

Abstract
The stomatognathic system is a functional complex of tissues and organs located within the oral and craniofacial cavities. The craniofacial anatomical factors and the biomechanics of the temporomandibular joints affect many systems throughout the body, including the organ of vision. However, few scientific reports have shown a relationship between the organ of vision and the stomatognathic system. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of connections along neural, muscle-fascial, and biochemical pathways between the organ of vision and the stomatognathic system. Based on the literature presented in this review, the connections between the organ of vision and the stomatognathic system seem undeniable. Understanding the anatomical, physiological, and biochemical interrelationships may allow to explain the interactions between the mentioned systems. According to the current knowledge, it is not possible to indicate the main linking pathway; presumably, it may be a combination of several presented pathways. The awareness of this relationship among dentists, ophthalmologists, physiotherapists, and optometrists should increase for the better diagnosis and treatment of patients.

This study aimed to analyze the change of visual input on electromyographic patterns of masticatory and cervical spine muscles in subjects with myopia. After applying the inclusion criteria, 50 subjects (18 males and 32 females) with myopia ranging from −0.5 to −5.75 Diopters (D), were included in the study. Four muscle pairs were analyzed: the anterior part of the temporalis muscle (TA), the superficial part of the masseter muscle (MM), the anterior belly of the digastric muscle (DA), and the middle part of the sternocleidomastoid muscle belly (SCM) during resting and functional activity. Statistical analysis showed a significant decrease within functional indices (FCI) for the sternocleidomastoid muscle (FCI SCM R, FCI SCM L, FCI SCM total) during clenching in the intercuspal position with eyes closed compared to eyes open. During maximum mouth opening, a statistically significant increase of functional opening index for the left temporalis muscle (FOI TA L) was observed. Within the activity index (AcI), there was a statistically significant decrease during clenching on dental cotton rollers with eyes closed compared to eyes open.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the interaction between the oculomotory system and the stomatognathic system based on morphofunctional relationships between the corresponding cranial nerves, their core areas and the reticular formation as a "link" by means of optometric examinations. Test subjects (N = 100) were prospectively recruited and divided into two groups: a young-age (N = 53, age 6-16 years) and old-age group (N = 47, 23-78 years). We determined the horizontal range of convergence and divergence as well as the near convergence point. These optometrically measured parameters were recorded in both groups in the resting position, at maximal mouth opening and with bite-blocking via tin foils (0.5 mm and 1 mm), which were inserted occlusally of the first lower left molar. All oculomotory parameters were significantly altered by bite manipulation and maximal mouth opening. These effects could be observed regardless of age and gender and thus suggest an interaction between eye movement and the orofacial complex. Subjects with asthenopic symptoms showed no different reactions compared to healthy subjects. For a final statement on the correlation between the oculomotory and stomatognathic system, further investigations are necessary. An interdisciplinary cooperation between the different subject areas is recommended for further studies.

Abstract
Objectives:
The aim of this study was to establish whether a relationship exists between eye and hair color and orthodontic anomalies; an association has never been evaluated previously.
Materials and Methods:
The records of 406 adolescent patients to the Erciyes University Faculty of Dentistry for orthodontic treatment were included in this retrospective cohort study. Participants were divided into sagittal (Class I, Class II, and Class III) and vertical (low angle, normal angle, and high angle) skeletal malocclusion classes. Moreover, participants were also divided by their eye (brown, green, or blue) and hair (black, brown, or blonde) color. Collated data were statistically evaluated using the SPSS software by applying the one-way analysis of variance, Kruskal–Wallis, the Pearson Chi-square, and Fisher’s exact tests. Statistical significance was accepted at P < 0.05.
Results:
No statistically significant relationships were identified between sagittal and skeletal malocclusion and eye color (P > 0.05). However, the sella-nasion-b and CoGn parameters of brown-eyed individuals were significantly smaller than individuals with other eye colors (P < 0.05). Moreover, a statistically significant difference was established for the CoA, CoGn, and ANS-Me parameters between the different hair groups (P < 0.05). All three parameters were significantly lower in brown-haired individuals compared to individuals with black haired (P < 0.05).
Conclusion:
This study identified no significant association between the eye and hair color variable, with similarly formed craniofacial structures, and with the sagittal and vertical skeletal malocclusion. Therefore, any malocclusion estimation assumption formed based on either the hair or eye color of an individual will be incorrect.

Hintergrund
Kann ein latentes Schielen (Heterophorie) nicht fusionell überwunden werden, treten asthenope Beschwerden wie intermittierende Doppelbilder, Blendempfindlichkeit, retrobulbäres Druckgefühl, Visusschwankungen und Kopfschmerzen auf. Häufig ist der zugrunde liegende Pathomechanismus unklar. Neben verschiedenen ophthalmologischen und neurologischen Erkrankungen wird auch die kraniomandibuläre Dysfunktion (CMD) als möglicher Auslöser einer Asthenopie beschrieben.
Material und Methode
Präsentation von 3 Fallbeispielen von Patientinnen mit CMD und Asthenopie und Literaturübersicht.
Resultate
Im Rahmen der Literaturrecherche wurden einige Arbeiten zur Anatomie und zu neurologischen Verschaltungen zwischen dem trigeminalen und dem okulomotorischen System gefunden, die über Veränderungen der Pupillenweite, der Konvergenz und der Stellung der Augen mögliche pathomechanische Zusammenhänge zwischen einer Malokklusion bzw. CMD und Heterophorie mit Asthenopie postulieren.
Schlussfolgerung
Bei Beschwerdepersistenz von asthenopen Beschwerden trotz optimaler orthoptischer Therapie kann eine weiterführende kieferorthopädische Abklärung in Betracht gezogen werden.

Abstract
Recent studies showed an evident correlation between the stomatognathic system and the visual system. These results suggest that subjects who are affected by both temporomandibular (TMD) disorders and refractive disorders present with altered control of pericranial musculature tone and higher open-eye electromyographic (EMG) values. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of standard vision correction on EMG in subjects suffering from TMD compared with application of the same vision treatments to non-TMD subjects. 40 subjects were enrolled in this study. The test group included 20 myopic subjects and also included patients with TMD. The control group included 20 healthy myopic subjects. All of the participants underwent a complete ocular examination and a sEMG analysis. The results showed that TMD subjects with vision disorders that are corrected with standard glasses present EMG values that are significantly higher than those presented by non-TMD subjects with vision disorders and standard glasses. Infact, in TMD subjects, eye correction did not have a positive effect on the stomatognathic or pericranial musculature.

Abstract
Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is one of the most challenging diseases to treat in medicine. Here, the authors describe a case of OSAS treated with a lingual elevator of Balercia (ELIBA®). The patient, a forty-five-year-old Caucasian male, had a chief complaint of numerous episodes of nocturnal apnea. After several visits with specialists, a polysomnographic examination was performed, in which the patient's apnea hypopnea index (AHI) was 30.4, and a lingual elevator was prescribed. The lingual elevator helped to keep the patient's tongue in the correct position and prevented the tongue from reverting back to the soft tissue spaces in the mouth. After six months of treatment with the lingual elevator and dietary adjustments, the patient's AHI decreased to 11.6. This simple yet customizable approach is a comfortable and easy option for patients to reduce night apnea episodes.

Abstract
Background Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD) therapy remains an open challenge for modern dentistry. Herein, we propose a new neuromuscular lingual device able to reduce signs and symptoms of TMD in female patients with chronic orofacial pain. Methods 50 females with myofascial TMD according to RDC/TMD were randomly assigned to study (n = 25) and control groups (n = 25). At T0, both groups received sEMG/KNG and pain evaluation by the VAS scale. The study group received the ELIBA device (lingual elevator by Balercia) constructed under ULF-TENS (ultra-low-frequency transcoutaneous electrical nervous stimulation). Subjects were instructed to use ELIBA at least for 16 h/day. After 6 months (T1), both groups underwent to sEMG/KNG and VAS revaluation. Results T1 study group compared to controls showed a significant reduction in total (p < 0.0001) and mean (p < 0.0001) sEMG values, as well as a significant increase in both maximum vertical mouth opening (p=0.003) and maximum velocity in mouth opening (p=0.003) and closing (p < 0.0001). Interestingly, a significant reduction in pain measured by VAS (p < 0.0001) was reported. Conclusions After 6 months, the ELIBA device is able to significantly reduce TMD-associated myogenous pain and to promote the enhancement of sEMG/KNG values. Practical Implications ELIBA can be considered as a new device, potentially useful for head-neck pain relief in patients suffering from chronic TMD. In addition, its use promotes a muscles relaxation inducing freeway space increase. This characteristic makes it particularly useful for rehabilitation of patients with not enough space for construction of conventional orthotics or neuromuscular bites.

Abstract
Background Beneficial effects of mastication on cognitive abilities in the elderly have been shown in human studies. However, little is currently known about the effect of masticatory stimulation on cognitive and perceptual ability in younger populations. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the influences of masticatory stimulation on perceptual ability in adolescent boys. Methods The present study examined the relationship between occlusal force (i.e., masticatory stimulation) and visual perception ability in adolescent boys. Visual perception ability was quantified by measuring global motion coherence threshold using psychophysical method. As an index of masticatory stimulation, occlusal force was measured by pressure sensitive film. We also measured participants’ athletic ability, e.g. aerobic capacity and grip strength, as potential confounding factor. Results The multiple regression analysis revealed a significant negative correlation between global motion coherence threshold and occlusal force, which persisted after controlling for confounding factors such as age and aerobic capacity. Conclusions This finding indicates that masticatory stimulation enhances visual perception in adolescent boys, indicating the possibility that beneficial effects of masticatory stimulation are observed not only in the elderly but in developing population consistently with the findings of the previous animal studies.

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this cross-sectional study is to evaluate the presence of any correlations between dysfunctions related to visual impairments and dental occlusion. Methods The test group included 34 subjects (21 males and 13 females; mean age 11 ± 2 years) randomly selected with the following inclusion criteria: absence of any diagnosis for problems at visual level except those related to refractive defects, visual acuity of at least 1.0, absence of any syndrome or malformation in the craniofacial area, good general health, and absence of any systemic disease able to influence the vision or the craniofacial growth. They underwent visual clinical tests to evaluate the presence of fusional vergence defects and amplitude. Each patient underwent an orthodontic clinical exam and the occlusal molar relationship of each subject was recorded and considered as occlusal variable. A statistical analysis with Chi-Squared test was performed in order to analyze the associations between the visual defects and the occlusal variable. Results A statistically significant association between the molar occlusal relationship and the occurrence of exodeviations was observed. The percentage of subjects presenting fusional amplitudes with convergence lower of the cut-off value was statistically significantly higher in the group of occlusal molar second class. Conclusions The results obtained show that there is an association between occlusal second molar class and fusional vergence defects.

Abstract
Background Managing orthodontic treatment is often very difficult for the orthodontist. Many devices are used during the orthopedic phase of orthodontic treatment, always with different functions. We describe a case of orthodontic management treated with the Equilibrator O.S.A. device (equilibrator designed by Ovidi, Santi, and Aprile for Eptamed SRL; Cesena, Italy; www.eptamed.com). Case presentation A healthy 10-year-old white boy presented with a skeletal class II, division 1 malocclusion, molar class II, exhibiting an overjet of 7 mm prior to treatment. For treatment, we only used the Equilibrator O.S.A. device. Conclusions We successfully treated an orthopedic/orthodontic case with a particular device that we describe here.
