Abstract
Air pollution may affect the clinical course of respiratory diseases, including COVID-19. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between exposure of adult patients to mean 24 h levels of particulate matter sized <10 μm (PM10 ) and <2.5 μm (PM2.5 ) and benzo(a)pyrene (B(a)P) during a week before their hospitalization due to SARS-CoV-2 infection and symptomatology, hyperinflammation, coagulopathy, the clinical course of disease, and outcome. The analyses were conducted during two pandemic waves: (i) dominated by highly pathogenic Delta variant (n = 1440) and (ii) clinically less-severe Omicron (n = 785), while the analyzed associations were adjusted for patient's age, BMI, gender, and comorbidities. The exposure to mean 24 h B(a)P exceeding the limits was associated with increased odds of fever and fatigue as early COVID-19 symptoms, hyperinflammation due to serum C-reactive protein >200 mg/L and interleukin-6 >100 pg/mL, coagulopathy due to d-dimer >2 mg/L and fatal outcome. Elevated PM10 and PM2. 5 levels were associated with higher odds of respiratory symptoms, procalcitonin >0.25 ng/mL and interleukin >100 pg/mL, lower oxygen saturation, need for oxygen support, and death. The significant relationships between exposure to air pollutants and the course and outcomes of COVID-19 were observed during both pandemic waves. Short-term exposure to elevated PM and B(a)P levels can be associated with a worse clinical course of COVID-19 in patients requiring hospitalization and, ultimately, contribute to the health burden caused by SARS-CoV-2 variants of higher and lower clinical significance.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to present the state and variability of air pollution and its potential consequences for the intensity of tourism traffic based on the example of the Gdańsk agglomeration as a very popular tourist destination of Northern Poland. Specifically, the study seeks to answer the question how a future, qualified tourism workforce, such as tourism and hospitality (T&H) students from higher educational institutions (HEIs) located in the investigated area, perceive the problem of air pollution and whether their perception may have a potential impact on their attitudes and career aspirations towards working in the T&H industry after graduation. In this study, both a desk-research method and a questionnaire were used. The main results reveal that although the intensified tourist traffic does not coincide with high concentrations of pollutants and a poor quality of air, it cannot be clearly stated that tourists choose a destination being guided by the condition of ambient air pollution. The findings also show that T&H students are strongly aware of the air pollution problems and its negative consequences for the perceived attractiveness of a tourist destination and its labour market. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this study is among the first to analyse the relationships between air pollution and students' perceptions of its consequences for tourism and for career development in the tourism industry, which is highly dependent on the environmental quality.

Abstract
Background Cough is the most common symptom of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, the factors contributing to impaired cough-specific quality of life (QoL) during the acute phase of COVID-19 infection remain unknown. We sought to identify such factors using the Japanese version of acute cough with the Leicester Cough Questionnaire (LCQ-acute). Methods Three hundred and two patients with COVID-19 admitted to Aichi Hospital between October 2020 and October 2021 completed the LCQ-acute at the time of admission. Clinical indices at the time of admission, such as presenting symptoms including cough, patient characteristics, disease severity, and biomarkers, were reviewed from the medical records. The impact of cough-specific QoL on clinical indices was assessed using two- or three-group comparisons and Pearson's correlation coefficient. Multivariate analysis was performed to determine the factors contributing to impaired cough-specific QoL at the time of admission for COVID-19 treatment. Results Two hundred and nine patients (69.2%) were coughing at the time of admission. Cough prevalence was highest, but cough-specific QoL was lowest at 8-11 days after onset. Multivariate analysis revealed that female sex, young age, gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, and dysgeusia and/or dysosmia contributed to impaired cough-specific QoL at the time of admission for COVID-19 treatment, along with systemic and respiratory symptoms such as fever, higher C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, sputum, and dyspnea. Conclusions Female sex, young age, asthma, GI symptoms, dysgeusia, and/or dysosmia, along with systemic and respiratory symptoms, indicated impaired cough-specific QoL at the time of admission for COVID-19 treatment.

Abstract
Objective Evidence supporting the efficiency of clinically administered therapies against interstitial lung disease (ILD)-related cough is limited. Thus, we conducted a study to evaluate the efficacy of short-term use of chest bands on cough in patients with ILD. Methods This pre-post intervention study was performed at two university hospitals between April 2017 and August 2020. Scores of the visual analog scale (VAS) for cough severity (in terms of frequency and intensity), Leicester Cough Questionnaire (LCQ)-acute, and frequency scale for symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (FSSG) were assessed before and after the use of the chest band (24/48 hours). Patients The study included patients with idiopathic interstitial pneumonias (IIPs) or connective tissue disease-associated interstitial lung disease (CTD-ILD). Results Four patients with IIPs and seven with CTD-ILD were included in the analysis. The cough intensity and LCQ-acute total score improved significantly after the use of the chest band (p=0.007 and p=0.005, respectively), although the cough frequency showed no significant reduction (p=0.074). Furthermore, the FSSG total and acid-reflux symptom scores improved (p=0.018 and p=0.027, respectively), and a negative correlation between the change in LCQ-acute total score and that in FSSG score for acid-reflux symptoms was observed (Spearman rho =-0.841, p=0.001). Conclusion The results of the current study suggest that chest bands might be useful for treating chronic refractory cough in patients with ILD and gastroesophageal reflux disease. However, these results should be interpreted with caution due to methodological limitations associated with this study.

Abstract
Background The clinical characteristics of patients with chronic cough are reported only in single-center survey in China, being significantly different from that in western countries. Here, we performed a multicenter study to describe the clinical characteristics of chronic cough patients. Methods
A cross-sectional observational survey was conducted in thirteen tertiary hospitals of Guangdong, South China. Relevant data were recorded using a standardized questionnaire and analyzed, including demographics, educational attainment, cough features, and concomitant symptoms. Results Of 933 patients in this study, the median age was 40.0 (IQR 31.0–52.0) years with a peaked age of 30–39 years. The proportion of females (487, 52.2 %) was comparable to that of males (446, 47.8 %). Up to 81.9 % of the patients were non-smokers. More than two-thirds of the subjects with chronic cough had a low educational level. The median cough duration was 6.0 (IQR 3.0–24.0) months, and 73.0 % of chronic cough patients presented with dry cough. Laryngeal paresthesia was the most common concomitant symptom (704, 75.5 %), followed by rhinitis/sinusitis-related (350, 37.5 %) and respiratory symptoms (322, 34.5 %). Rhinitis/sinusitis-related symptoms more frequently occurred in patients with productive cough than in those with dry cough (49.0 % vs. 33.0 %, P < 0.001). Moreover, female patients displayed an older age and a higher prevalence of nocturnal cough compared to male patients (both P < 0.05). Conclusions Our results show an equal gender, young profile and laryngeal paresthesia in patients with chronic cough, and different clinical features between females and males.

Abstract
RATIONALE FOR REVIEW In 2019, approximately, 1.4 billion people travelled internationally. Many individuals travel to megacities where air pollution concentrations can vary significantly. Short-term exposure to air pollutants can cause morbidity and mortality related to cardiovascular and respiratory disease, with the literature clearly reporting a strong association between short-term exposure to particulate matter ≤2.5 μm and ozone with adverse health outcomes in resident populations. However, limited research has been conducted on the health impacts of short-term exposure to air pollution in individuals who travel internationally. The objective of this systematic review was to review the evidence for the respiratory and cardiovascular health impacts from exposure to air pollution during international travel to polluted cities in adults aged ≥18 years old. KEY FINDINGS We searched PubMed, Scopus and EMBASE for studies related to air pollution and the health impacts on international travellers. Of the initially identified 115 articles that fit the search criteria, 6 articles were selected for the final review. All six studies found indications of adverse health impacts of air pollution exposure on international travellers, with most of the changes being reversible upon return to their home country/city. However, none of these studies contained large populations nor investigated vulnerable populations, such as children, elderly or those with pre-existing conditions. CONCLUSIONS More research is warranted to clearly understand the impacts of air pollution related changes on travellers' health, especially on vulnerable groups who may be at higher risk of adverse impacts during travel to polluted cities.

Abstract
Chronic cough is one of the most common complaints for which patients in China seek medical attention. However, there are no nationwide data on the prevalence and socioeconomic burden of chronic cough. Although approximately 50% of Chinese men smoke, the vast majority of patients presenting for evaluation of chronic cough are never smokers. An equal sex distribution and a middle-aged predominance have been observed in the Chinese chronic cough population, despite demonstration of a higher cough reflex sensitivity in females and older patients. The role of air pollution in the distinct age and sex distribution requires further study. In terms of the etiologies of chronic cough in China, cough-variant asthma, upper airway cough syndrome, nonasthmatic eosinophilic bronchitis, and atopic cough are the most common causes, comprising 75.2% to 87.6% of cases across different regions. Chinese Guidelines for Diagnosis and Treatment of Cough were initially published in 2005, and updated in 2009 and 2016. In addition, the China Cough Coalition was established in 2016. Great progress has been made in both cough-related clinical practice and research in recent years, however, there are still challenges ahead. To facilitate optimal management of chronic cough in China, efforts promoting the dissemination and application of published guidelines will be essential, especially in community-based healthcare and in rural regions. As chronic refractory cough has been identified as a huge challenge to clinicians worldwide, continued international cooperation will be essential in optimizing evaluation and management of chronic cough.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This systematic review summarises and appraises methods of citric acid cough reflex testing (CRT) documented in published literature. METHODS Electronic databases, MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsychINFO, Scopus were searched up to and including 11th February 2018. Studies reporting a method of citric acid CRT, published in peer-reviewed journals in English or Spanish, were assessed for the inclusion criteria. Of the selected studies, information on the instrumentation and CRT protocol was extracted. RESULTS A total of 129 studies were included. Instrumentation and protocols differed widely across studies. Reporting of methods of citric acid CRT was sub-standard, with many crucial methodological components omitted from published manuscripts, preventing their full replication. CONCLUSIONS Considerable methodological variability exists for citric acid CRT in published literature. The findings suggest that caution is warranted in comparing citric acid cough thresholds across studies. Full replication of previously published methods of citric acid CRT is limited due to crucial elements of the citric acid CRT protocol being omitted from published manuscripts. These findings have implications on the use of citric acid CRT in clinical and pharmaceutical studies to evaluate the effects of antitussive medications and cough therapies.

Abstract
Chronic cough is one of the most common complains for patients seeking medical attention in both general practice and respiratory specialist clinics. Cough variant asthma, eosinophilic bronchitis, upper airway cough syndrome, as well as gastro-esophageal reflux disease are common conditions associated with chronic cough, and cough variant asthma, eosinophilic bronchitis account for a higher proportion of patients with chronic cough in China than in Western countries. An older female predominance has been reported in most Western countries, which may be attributed to a higher cough reflex sensitivity in females, especially those post-menopausal females. However, studies conducted in China showed that patients with chronic cough have a nearly similar gender distribution and most of them are in their late 30s or early 40s, despite the similar gender and age difference in cough reflex sensitivity as Western countries. Environmental and occupational exposures, cigarette smoking, unhealthy lifestyle might play a role in the distinct age and gender distribution of Chinese chronic cough patients, yet further study is needed to clarify it.

Abstract
PURPOSE An older female predominance has been reported among chronic cough patients in Western countries, which is considered to be associated with a higher cough sensitivity in females. However, the characteristics of Chinese chronic cough patients remain unclear. This study aimed to explore the age and sex distribution as well as their relationship with cough reflex sensitivity to capsaicin in Chinese chronic cough patients. METHODS We analyzed the demographic features of 1,882 consecutive chronic cough patients who attended our cough clinic in Guangzhou, China. Cough sensitivity to capsaicin, which was defined as the lowest concentration of capsaicin causing 5 coughs or more (C5), was measured in 539 of the 1,882 patients and 68 healthy volunteers. RESULTS The mean age of the patients was 43.0 ± 13.7 years and patients aged <50 years accounted for more than two-thirds of the study population. Around 87% of the patients were never-smokers. The proportion of females (51.5%) was almost equal to that of males (48.5%). The pattern of the age and sex distribution was consistently reflected within most common causes of chronic cough, while a female predominance was shown in patients with cough-variant asthma and patients aged ≥50 years. Female patients had higher cough sensitivity to capsaicin than male patients (log C5: 1.58 ± 0.84 vs. 2.04 ± 0.84 μmol/L, P = 0.001), and patients aged ≥50 years had higher cough sensitivity to capsaicin than patients aged <50 years. CONCLUSIONS In China, patients with chronic cough have a roughly equal sex distribution and a middle-aged predominance, irrespective of a higher cough sensitivity to capsaicin in females and older patients. Abstract
Outdoor air pollution is a major environmental health problem throughout the world. In particular, exposure to particulate matter (PM) has been associated with the development and exacerbation of several respiratory diseases, including asthma. Although the adverse health effects of PM have been demonstrated for many years, the underlying mechanisms have not been fully identified. In this review, we focus on the role of the lung epithelium and specifically highlight multiple cytokines in PM-induced respiratory responses. We describe the available literature on the topic including in vitro studies, findings in humans (ie observations in human cohorts, human controlled exposure and ex vivo studies) and in vivo animal studies. In brief, it has been shown that exposure to PM modulates the airway epithelium and promotes the production of several cytokines, including IL-1, IL-6, IL-8, IL-25, IL-33, TNF-α, TSLP and GM-CSF. Further, we propose that PM-induced type 2-promoting cytokines are important mediators in the acute and aggravating effects of PM on airway inflammation. Targeting these cytokines could therefore be a new approach in the treatment of asthma.
