Obtaining a foundation for nursing care at the time of patient admission: a grounded theory study

Midwifery Students' Views on NANDA-I Diagnoses and Care Plans Used in Clinical Practice

BACKGROUND

Developing a care plan for patients is not specific to nursing or midwifery; it is the case in every situation where patients seek help from care providers. Midwifery students draw upon NANDA-I diagnoses while developing care plans (CPs) in clinical practices, and plan and apply their care accordingly. This study aims to identify the views of midwifery students on the NANDA-I diagnoses and CPs that they use in clinical practice.

METHODS

This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 222 students between September and December 2022. The research data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a questionnaire based on NANDA-I diagnoses and CPs. In line with the existing literature, the questionnaire was designed by two academicians who specialized in nursing fundamentals and midwifery. The questionnaire consisted of closed-ended (8 questions) and open-ended (7 questions) questions. Data analysis was performed with descriptive statistics and Pearson's chi-square test.

RESULTS

Of 222 students, 57.7% stated that they did not know the definition of a CP. It was found that 46.8% of the students felt inadequate at developing CPs. Furthermore, the students stated that they found the CP training provided during their undergraduate study partially sufficient, with a rate of 52.7%, and 16.7% of midwifery students offered suggestions about CP teaching. The number of midwifery-related diagnoses of which the students were aware was 19.

CONCLUSIONS

The study was beneficial in terms of identifying the deficiencies of the students related to NANDA-I diagnoses and developing CPs that might be overcome through education and observing the midwifery-related diagnoses that they used. It is of critical importance to educate midwifery students about midwifery-related NANDA-I diagnoses in order that they embrace midwifery diagnoses and CP learning.

Defining the Primary Work Stress Factors of Chinese Coal Miners-A Mixed-Methods Study

BACKGROUND

Studies have indicated that coal miners in China have higher levels of perceived job stress. However, few studies have investigated the work stress structure of coal miners.

OBJECTIVE

Our study focused on the work stress of coal miners in China, with a primary aim to determine the work stress structure of coal miners in China using a mixed-methods approach.

METHODS

Semi-structured interviews were performed with thirty-three people (team leaders and frontline coal miners) conducted with participants from various state-owned large- and medium-sized coal mines in China. Grounded theory was used to construct an initial model for the concept of coal miners' work stress. Using the results of this initial survey and findings in the existing literature, we then constructed a preliminary questionnaire regarding coal miners' work stress and administered the questionnaire to 900 coal miners in the Shaanxi, Henan, Inner Mongolia, and Gansu provinces.

RESULTS

The results show that the work stress structure for coal miners differs from that for other occupational types in China, due to differences in the Chinese culture and foreign cultural influences. We revised our questionnaire based on these considerations and administered a new survey to the frontline production workers in coal mines. The preliminary questionnaires were revised and analyzed through exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, resulting in a final formal model for work stress, which was supported by content and structural validity.

CONCLUSION

In this research, we used the framework of grounded theory to conduct an empirical analysis of the structure model of coal miners' work stress. The findings support that the primary work stress factors of Chinese coal miners included the stress of the work environment, job responsibility, interpersonal relationships, career development, the family environment, and organizational systems. Coal enterprises should therefore always take these factors into consideration when developing and implementing safety management policies aimed at to improve the occupational health status of coal miners.

Perception of primary healthcare management nurses on the nursing process

OBJECTIVE

this qualitative study aimed to analyze the perceptions of primary health care management nurses on the nursing process.

METHOD

data were collected through interviews and analyzed by the Content Analysis proposed by Bardin's theoretical framework.

RESULTS

managers recognize the importance of the nursing process, although its implementation was not a priority at the time of the interviews. A conceptual difficulty and a lack of understanding that the implementation of the care methodology should be a cross-departmental action in the local healthcare management were clearly observed.

CONCLUSION

managers should have their perspectives broadened concerning the relevance of the nursing process and the professional training. The active participation of legislative nursing bodies, local healthcare management and the federal government may open the way for the effective implementation of the nursing process.

How spouses evaluate Nursing Home Placement of their demented partner: a study about the end of perseverance time

AIM

This study was about the final decision by spouses to have their demented partner placed in a nursing home. The central question was whether the admission took place in the right time in their point of view.

METHOD

Fourteen partners of persons with dementia evaluated the nursing home placement. They were interviewed at home using a semi-structured questionnaire. Grounded theory was used to explore the process of decision-making. In addition to the interviews, quantitative data were used from a 2-year follow-up study.

RESULTS

Results underline that the placement decision had to be made in phases over time. The first decision is about placement of the relative on a waiting list, and the second decision is about the actual placement in a nursing home once a place becomes available. This second and final decision often had to be taken under time pressure to avoid a place in the nursing home being left empty. If they had been given more time and space to reconsider their admission decision, most partners said they could have had continued providing homecare longer. During the investigation, the following classification in timeliness of the admission emerged: Placement was at the right time, too early, too late or out of control.

CONCLUSION

Spouses indicated they could have kept on giving care for a longer period of time if they had been given more time and space to make their final decision about the admission of their partner. It may be helpful for informal and formal carers to focus on perseverance time in considering placement or prolonged support at home. Placement at an appropriate time may lead to a higher degree of well-being of informal carers before and especially after the admission.
