Nonlinear pulse compression of a thin-disk amplifier and contrast enhancement via nonlinear ellipse rotation

We demonstrate pulse compressibility from 840 fs to 38 fs of 10 mJ pulses from a thin-disk amplifier at a repetition rate of 3 kHz after nonlinear broadening in a multipass cell. In addition, the temporal-intensity contrast is enhanced via nonlinear ellipse rotation of more than a factor 50 with an optical efficiency of 56%. We believe this is the first published experimental combination of multipass cell-based nonlinear compression and nonlinear ellipse rotation-based contrast enhancement preserving both pulse compressibility and beam quality.

Retaining 3D shape of picosecond laser pulses during optical harmonics generation

Collinear and noncollinear sum-frequency generation of broadband laser pulses with angular and frequency chirp is considered. The conditions of minimal distortions of 3D ellipsoidal intensity distribution of triangular chirped femtosecond pulses during generation of the second, third, and fourth harmonics of a Ti-Sa laser in LBO, BBO, and KBBF crystals are found using numerical methods. The efficiency of conversion from the fundamental to the fourth harmonic (45%) is higher than to the third harmonic (20%), and the distortions of intensity distribution are less.

Decomposition of powerful axisymmetrically polarized laser pulses in underdense plasma

Interaction of relativistically intense axisymmetrically polarized (radially or azimuthally polarized) laser pulses (RIAPLP) with underdense plasma is shown experimentally and theoretically to be essentially different from the interaction of conventional Gaussian pulses. The difference is clearly observed in distinct spectra of the side-scattered laser light for the RIAPLP and Gaussian pulses, as well as in the appearance of a spatially localized strong side emission of second harmonic of the laser pulse in the case of RIAPLP. According to our analysis based on three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, this is a result of instability in the propagation of RIAPLP in uniform underdense plasma.

Laser-driven electron beam and radiation sources for basic, medical and industrial sciences

To date active research on laser-driven plasma-based accelerators have achieved great progress on production of high-energy, high-quality electron and photon beams in a compact scale. Such laser plasma accelerators have been envisaged bringing a wide range of applications in basic, medical and industrial sciences. Here inheriting the groundbreaker's review article on "Laser Acceleration and its future" [Toshiki Tajima, (2010)],(1)) we would like to review recent progress of producing such electron beams due to relativistic laser-plasma interactions followed by laser wakefield acceleration and lead to the scaling formulas that are useful to design laser plasma accelerators with controllability of beam energy and charge. Lastly specific examples of such laser-driven electron/photon beam sources are illustrated.

Radiation oncology: physics advances that minimize morbidity

ABSTRACT 

Radiation therapy has become an ever more successful treatment for many cancer patients. This is due in large part from advances in physics including the expanded use of imaging protocols combined with ever more precise therapy devices such as linear and particle beam accelerators, all contributing to treatments with far fewer side effects. This paper will review current state-of-the-art physics maneuvers that minimize morbidity, such as intensity-modulated radiation therapy, volummetric arc therapy, image-guided radiation, radiosurgery and particle beam treatment. We will also highlight future physics enhancements on the horizon such as MRI during treatment and intensity-modulated hadron therapy, all with the continued goal of improved clinical outcomes.

Current concepts in clinical radiation oncology

Based on its potent capacity to induce tumor cell death and to abrogate clonogenic survival, radiotherapy is a key part of multimodal cancer treatment approaches. Numerous clinical trials have documented the clear correlation between improved local control and increased overall survival. However, despite all progress, the efficacy of radiation-based treatment approaches is still limited by different technological, biological, and clinical constraints. In principle, the following major issues can be distinguished: (1) The intrinsic radiation resistance of several tumors is higher than that of the surrounding normal tissue, (2) the true patho-anatomical borders of tumors or areas at risk are not perfectly identifiable, (3) the treatment volume cannot be adjusted properly during a given treatment series, and (4) the individual heterogeneity in terms of tumor and normal tissue responses toward irradiation is immense. At present, research efforts in radiation oncology follow three major tracks, in order to address these limitations: (1) implementation of molecularly targeted agents and 'omics'-based screening and stratification procedures, (2) improvement of treatment planning, imaging, and accuracy of dose application, and (3) clinical implementation of other types of radiation, including protons and heavy ions. Several of these strategies have already revealed promising improvements with regard to clinical outcome. Nevertheless, many open questions remain with individualization of treatment approaches being a key problem. In the present review, the current status of radiation-based cancer treatment with particular focus on novel aspects and developments that will influence the field of radiation oncology in the near future is summarized and discussed.

Approaching the full octave: noncollinear optical parametric chirped pulse amplification with two-color pumping

We present a new method to broaden the amplification range in optical parametric amplification toward the bandwidth needed for single cycle femtosecond pulses. Two-color pumping of independent stages is used to sequentially amplify the long and short wavelength parts of the ultrabroadband seed pulses. The concept is tested in two related experiments. With multi-mJ pumping pulses with a nearly octave spanning spectrum and an uncompressed energy of 3 mJ are generated at low repetition rate. The spectral phase varies slowly and continuously in the overlap region as shown with 100 kHz repetition rate. This should allow the compression to the Fourier limit of below 5 fs in the high energy system.
