Virtual reality applied to home-visit rehabilitation for hemiplegic shoulder pain in a stroke patient: a case report

Gaming on an Immersive Virtual Reality Platform to Ameliorate the Level of Anxiety in Patients Undergoing Congenital Heart Disease

The double outlet right ventricle (DORV) is an unusual cardiovascular abnormality that is present at birth. The pulmonary artery and the aorta, the cardiovascular system's two major arteries, link to the right ventricle in the DORV. The coronary artery links to the right ventricular, while in an ideal heart, the aorta connects to the left ventricle. DORV is an issue as the right ventricle delivers blood that is low in oxygen, subsequently distributed all around the human being. DORV is always connected with a further cardiac ailment known as a ventricular septal defect (VSD). Behavioral issues are quite prevalent in children. Emotional-obsessive-compulsive disorder, sadness, stress, social fear, and developmental problems are among them. Virtual reality (VR) is a stimulating experience that uses position tracking and three-dimensional (3D) near-eye presentation to give the participant a realistic view of a virtual environment. VR applications involve enjoyment (especially video games). A nine-year-old female complained of a tingling sensation over her right palm. She also had right-side weakness and convulsions, which were restricted to the dominant side. After investigation and evaluation of the condition, it is a known case of congenital heart defects and was planned for surgical correction. The study aims to provide information on an instance of DORV, transposition of great arteries, VSD, and pulmonary stenosis with resolved brain abscess by giving VR video games to reduce anxiety in patients undergoing an operation.

Virtual reality to improve low-back pain and pelvic pain during pregnancy: a pilot RCT for a multicenter randomized controlled trial

A significant proportion of women experience low back and pelvic pain during and after pregnancy, which can negatively impact their daily lives. Various factors are attributed to these complaints, and many affected women do not receive adequate healthcare. However, there is evidence to support the use of different physiotherapeutic interventions to alleviate these conditions. Virtual reality is a promising complementary treatment to physiotherapy, particularly in improving pain perception and avoidance. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of a four-week program combining VR and physiotherapy compared to standard physiotherapy in pregnant women with low back and pelvic pain, in terms of improving pain avoidance, intensity, disability, and functional level. The study also aims to investigate patient satisfaction with the VR intervention. This research will be conducted through a multi-center randomized controlled clinical trial involving pregnant patients residing in the provinces of Seville and Malaga with a diagnosis of low back and pelvic pain during pregnancy. The alternative hypothesis is that the implementation of a Virtual Reality program in combination with standard physiotherapy will result in better clinical outcomes compared to the current standard intervention, which could lead to the development of new policies and interventions for these pathologies and their consequences. An Age-Stratified Cross-Sectional Study of Physical Activity and Exercise Adherence of Stroke Survivors in Rural Regions

Objective

To describe the Physical Activity and Exercise (PAE) adherence of stroke survivors in rural regions, additionally, to analyze the influential factors through age stratification.

Methods

This is a cross-sectional study. Totally, 596 stroke patients (65.70±10.76 years) from three rural regions were selected, PAE scale was used for measuring compliance. The influential factors among different age groups were explored separately. This study adheres to the EQUATOR checklist, SROBE.

Results

Only 17.8% (106) of participants regularly participated in PAE. Altogether, 42.45% were classified as a young-middle age group, and the rest 57.55% were in the old age group. Positive attitudes and better PAE-relevant knowledge were protective factors for adherence in the young and middle-aged group (OR=0.683; 95% CI 0.173~0.588 and OR=0.939; 95% CI 0.013~0.114), as well as in the old group (OR=0.704; 95% CI 0.193~0.534 and OR=0.929; 95% CI 0.035~0.118); having no home rehabilitation equipment was a strong risk factor for younger patients (OR=16.078; 95% CI 1.235~4.320); however, without hemiplegia can positively affect their adherence (OR=0.891; 95% CI 0.045~0.229). In addition, the presence of a spouse can lead to a better compliance among old patients (OR=0.436; 95% CI -0.496~-0.165).

Conclusion

It is necessary to improve the knowledge of physical activity in rural stroke patients of all ages. It is of great significance to install home rehabilitation equipment to promote exercise for young and middle-aged stroke patients. While for the old stroke patients, we strongly suggest focusing on the role of spouses, which would be more useful in low-income regions.

Home-Based Rehabilitation of the Shoulder Using Auxiliary Systems and Artificial Intelligence: An Overview

Advancements in modern medicine have bolstered the usage of home-based rehabilitation services for patients, particularly those recovering from diseases or conditions that necessitate a structured rehabilitation process. Understanding the technological factors that can influence the efficacy of home-based rehabilitation is crucial for optimizing patient outcomes. As technologies continue to evolve rapidly, it is imperative to document the current state of the art and elucidate the key features of the hardware and software employed in these rehabilitation systems. This narrative review aims to provide a summary of the modern technological trends and advancements in home-based shoulder rehabilitation scenarios. It specifically focuses on wearable devices, robots, exoskeletons, machine learning, virtual and augmented reality, and serious games. Through an in-depth analysis of existing literature and research, this review presents the state of the art in home-based rehabilitation systems, highlighting their strengths and limitations. Furthermore, this review proposes hypotheses and potential directions for future upgrades and enhancements in these technologies. By exploring the integration of these technologies into home-based rehabilitation, this review aims to shed light on the current landscape and offer insights into the future possibilities for improving patient outcomes and optimizing the effectiveness of home-based rehabilitation programs.

Virtual reality a technological miracle transforming physical rehabilitation: A scoping review

Physical rehabilitation is evolving day by day. In the same way, simulation in rehabilitation is increasing and has now become a cornerstone for rehabilitation programs. Increase in the number of new protocols, clinical methods, and treatment standardization, virtual reality is appearing as a new medium to deliver the simulation. Virtual reality gives the benefits of forming standardized treatment protocols on demand for various conditions repetitively with a cost-effective delivery system. This was an observational retrospective study. The PubMed database was used to obtain the available material related to virtual reality and rehabilitation and was searched using the same keywords. The articles were then sorted as the subject to the recent decade. The basic information was then obtained, which included timespan, sources of the document, average years of publication, document types we collected, and average citation per year per document. Analysis of the literature that was available online related to virtual reality and rehabilitation between 2011 and 2021 generated a list of 813 documents from 275 sources, of which 810 were from journal articles and 3 were book chapters with an average year of publication of 2.16. The highest number of publications was 480 in 2020, followed by 150 in 2019, 95 in 2018, and 28 in 2017. The annual growth rate percentage of scientific publications was 26.1%. Therefore, more studies should be performed on virtual reality.
