Abstract
Objective Life's Essential 8 (LE8) is a new comprehensive metric based on Life's Simple 7 (LS7). Few studies have investigated the association between LE8 and the odds of hyperuricaemia (HUA). This study examined the association between LE8, LS7 with odds of HUA. Methods We cross-sectionally analysed data from the China Multi-Ethnic Cohort (CMEC) study. LE8 and LS7 were categorized as low, moderate and high. The CMEC provided an ideal and unique opportunity to characterize the association between LE8, LS7 and the odds of HUA. Results Of the 89 823 participants, 14 562 (16.2%) had HUA. A high level of LE8 was associated with lower odds of HUA after full adjustment. The adjusted odds ratios (ORs) were 1 (reference), 0.70 (95% CI 0.67, 0.73) and 0.45 (0.42, 0.48) across low, moderate and high LE8 groups, respectively (Ptrend < 0.001). Similar results were observed in LS7 and HUA. The adjusted ORs were 1 (reference), 0.68 (95% CI 0.65, 0.71) and 0.46 (95% CI 0.43, 0.49) across low, moderate and high LS7 groups, respectively (Ptrend < 0.001). There were significant interactions between LE8 and age, gender, ethnicity and drinking habits on HUA. Receiver operating characteristics analysis showed that the area under the curve for LE8 and LS7 were similar (0.638 and 0.635, respectively). Conclusion This study indicated a clearly inverse gradient association between the cardiovascular health metrics LE8 and LS7 and the odds of HUA.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Differences have been observed in the association of serum urate levels with consumption of different types of alcoholic beverages. However, previous studies have not standardized the unit of intake for ethanol content, and only limited types of alcoholic beverages have been evaluated. OBJECTIVE To examine differences in the association of serum urate levels with various types of alcoholic beverages when their intakes are standardized for ethanol content. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS This retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted using data from participants aged 20 years or older who completed a medical checkup at St Luke's International University in Japan between October 1, 2012, and October 31, 2021. Participant demographics, blood test results, and lifestyle questionnaire data were used as covariates. Analysis was performed in December 2021. EXPOSURES Consumption of alcoholic beverages, including beer, sake (rice wine), shochu (Japanese spirit), wine, and whiskey. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Serum urate levels were measured during the medical checkup. The beverage unit was standardized to 1 standard drink, which contained 20 g of ethanol. Multivariable linear regression including interaction terms of alcohol consumption and dominant alcoholic beverage was performed. RESULTS This study included 78 153 participants. Their mean (SD) age was 47.6 (12.8) years; 36 463 (46.7%) were men and 41 690 were women (53.3%). A total of 45 755 participants (58.5%) were regular alcohol drinkers. Consistent associations of serum urate levels with alcohol consumption were observed in the beer-dominant group, with β coefficients (for 1 standard drink per day) of 0.14 mg/dL (95% CI, 0.11-0.17 mg/dL; P < .001) for men and 0.23 mg/dL (95% CI, 0.20-0.26 mg/dL; P < .001) for women. A moderate increase in serum urate levels was observed in the wine-dominant group compared with a modest and nonsignificant increase in the sake-dominant group, with β coefficients (for 1 standard drink per day) for the latter group of 0.05 mg/dL (95% CI, -0.01 to 0.10; P = .10) for men and 0.04 mg/dL (95% CI, -0.05 to 0.14 mg/dL; P = .38) for women. Restricted cubic splines showed different patterns in associations of serum urate levels with ethanol intake by dominant alcoholic beverages. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE The results of this study suggest that the extent of the association of serum urate levels with alcohol intake was different for alcoholic beverages even after ethanol content was standardized. Higher beer consumption among men and women was consistently associated with higher serum urate levels, whereas sake was not associated with changes in serum urate levels. Therefore, alcoholic beverage type, in addition to ethanol content, should be considered as a factor contributing to hyperuricemia.

Abstract
The glucokinase regulator gene (GCKR) is located on chromosome 2p23. It plays a crucial role in maintaining plasma glucose homeostasis and metabolic traits. Recently, genome-wide association studies have revealed a positive association between hyperuricemia and GCKR variants in adults. This study investigated this genetic association in Taiwanese adolescents. Data were collected from our previous cross-sectional study (Taipei Children Heart Study). The frequencies of various genotypes (CC, CT, and TT) or alleles (C and T) of the GCKR intronic single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs780094 and the coding SNP rs1260326 (Pro446Leu, a common 1403C-T transition) were compared between a total of 968 Taiwanese adolescents (473 boys, 495 girls) with hyperuricemia or normal uric acid levels on the basis of gender differences. Logistic and linear regression analyses explored the role of GCKR in abnormal uric acid (UA) levels. Boys had higher UA levels than girls (6.68 ± 1.29 and 5.23 ± 0.95 mg/dl, respectively, p < 0.001). The analysis of both SNPs in girls revealed that the T allele was more likely to appear in patients with hyperuricemia than the C allele. After adjusting for confounders, the odds ratio (OR) for hyperuricemia incidence in the TT genotype was 1.75 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.02–3.00), which was higher than that in the C allele carriers in rs1260326 in the girl population. Similarly, the TT genotypes had a higher risk of hyperuricemia, with an OR of 2.29 (95% CI 1.11–4.73) for rs1260326 and 2.28 (95% CI 1.09–4.75) for rs780094, than the CC genotype in girl adolescents. The T (Leu446) allele of GCKR rs1260326 polymorphism is associated with higher UA levels in Taiwanese adolescent girls.

Abstract
Alcohol is recognized a risk factor for increased uric acid and gout flare. The aim of the study was to review the literature in order to find out what is the role of alcohol consumption in pathogenesis of gout. A search in PubMed, Google Scholar, Medline Complete database was performed in January 2021. The databases were searched with the phrases: "uric acid and alcohol," "alcoholic beverages and gout," "hyperuricemia and alcoholic beverages consumption" published between 2000 and 2021. A total of 2642 results were found. The 99 non-duplicate citations were screened. Then 81 articles were excluded after abstract screen. After that 18 articles were retrieved. Eventually 15 articles were included for systematic review. Several authors see the positive correlation between beer or distilled spirits consumption and gout. Some include wine to the list of triggers of gout. Others state that moderate wine consumption protects from gout attacks due to antioxidants and phytoestrogen content. Majority noticed the relationship between episodic alcohol consumption and gout attacks. Episodic alcohol intake triggers gout attacks, regardless of type of alcohol. Thus, individuals with established gout and pre-existing risk factors should limit all types of alcohol intake to prevent gout episodes.

Abstract
Chronic exposure to high altitude may lead to hyperuricemia. We investigated the prevalence of hyperuricemia and its risk factors among employees in high-altitude areas. A cross-sectional survey with cluster sampling was performed at 23 worksites on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Subjects were evaluated by using questionnaires, anthropometric and laboratory measurements, and abdominal ultrasound. A multilevel logistic regression model and restricted cubic spline were used to explore the associated factors of hyperuricemia. Of the 4198 employees included in the study, the age-standardized prevalence of hyperuricemia was 28.1% (95% confidence interval (CI) 26.7-29.5), with 31.9% (95%CI 30.2-33.6) in men and 17.9% (95%CI 15.7-20.1) in women. Hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and a meat-food pattern were positively associated with hyperuricemia in both sexes, while diabetes, shift work, body mass index, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and low intake of fruits and vegetables were significantly associated with hyperuricemia only in men. Furthermore, a nonlinear dose-response association between the number of cardiovascular risk factors (CRFs) and hyperuricemia was observed. Compared with those having 0 CRFs, the full-adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95%CIs for 1, 2, and ≥ 3 CRFs were 1.76 (95%CI 1.25-2.47), 2.54 (95%CI 1.81-3.55), and 3.05 (95%CI 2.16-4.31) in men, respectively, and 2.13 (95%CI 1.43-3.17), 2.78 (95%CI 1.71-4.53), and 3.13 (95%CI 1.50-6.55) in women, respectively. Hyperuricemia is common in employees at high-altitude areas. However, working at higher altitudes does not mean necessarily higher risk of hyperuricemia, as dietary factors and clustered CRFs are more significant. Thus, workplace-based lifestyle modifications should be promoted.

Abstract
About 2500 years ago, gout was observed by Hippocrates and many people suffered severe pain and deformity. Lifestyle and diet play a significant role in gout and serum uric acid levels. Epidemiological and research studies have supported this evidence. Many recommendations and guidelines from different parts of the world mention the impact of diet on gout. Recently, new research has shown associations between vitamin C, alcohol, coffee, tea, milk and yogurt with uric acid and the risk of gout. Our review summarizes recently published research regarding dietary impact on the risk of gout and serum uric acid levels.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the associations between dietary zinc intake and hyperuricaemia. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING This study was conducted in a health examination centre of China. PARTICIPANTS A total of 5168 middle-aged and older participants (aged 40 years or above) (2697 men and 2471 women) were included. OUTCOME MEASURES Dietary zinc intake was assessed using a validated semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire. Hyperuricaemia was defined as uric acid ≥416 µmol/L for males and ≥360 µmol/L for females. RESULTS For males, the prevalence of hyperuricaemia was 22.9%. After adjusting for age, body mass index (BMI) and energy intake, the ORs were 0.68 (95% CI 0.45 to 0.92) in the second quintile, 0.63 (95% CI 0.45 to 0.89) in the third quintile, 0.68 (95% CI 0.46 to 1.00) in the fourth quintile and 0.55 (95% CI 0.35 to 0.87) in the fifth quintile comparing the lowest quintile of Zn intake, respectively (p for trend=0.03). In the multivariable adjusted model, the relative odds of hyperuricaemia were significantly decreased by 0.71 times in the second quintile of zinc intake (OR 0.71, 95% CI 0.52 to 0.98), 0.64 times in the third quintile (OR 0.65, 95% CI 0.44 to 0.94) and 0.55 times in the fifth quintile (OR 0.56, 95% CI 0.32 to 0.97) compared with those in the lowest quintile, and p for trend was 0.064. For females, the prevalence of hyperuricaemia was 10.0%, and unadjusted, minimally adjusted as well as multivariable adjusted ORs all suggested no significant association between dietary zinc intake and hyperuricaemia. CONCLUSIONS The findings of this cross-sectional study indicated that dietary zinc intake was inversely associated with hyperuricaemia in middle-aged and older males, but not in females. The association was significant after considering the influence of age, BMI and energy intake, and after that, minimum adjustment remained independent of further confounding factors such as vitamin C intake, alcohol drinking status and nutrient supplementation.

Abstract
AIM Using general Japanese populations, we performed a replication study of genetic loci previously identified in European-descent populations as being associated with uric acid and gout. The relative contribution of non-genetic and genetic factors to the variances in serum uric acid concentration was then evaluated. METHODS Seven single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were genotyped from 7 candidate loci robustly confirmed in Europeans. Genotyping was performed in up to 17,226 individuals, from which 237 hyperuricemia cases and 3,218 controls were chosen for a case-control study. For 6 SNPs showing a replication of uric acid association in 17,076 general population samples, we further tested the associations with other metabolic traits (n≤5,745) and with type 2 diabetes (931 cases and 1404 controls) and coronary artery disease (806 cases and 1337 controls). RESULTS Significant uric acid associations (one-tailed p<0.05) were replicated for 6 loci in Japanese. The strongest association was detected at SLC22A12 rs505802 for uric acid (p=2.4×10(-50)) and ABCG2 rs2231142 for hyperuricemia (p3.6×10(-10)). The combined genetic effect could explain some proportion of inter-individual variation in uric acid (R(2)=0.03) and was more or less comparable to the effect of well-recognized risk factors -BMI (R(2)=0.04) and alcohol intake (R(2)=0.01). The tested SNPs were not significantly associated with cardiovascular risk traits except for GCKR rs780094. CONCLUSION Our results confirm that 6 common uric acid variant loci are reproducible in Japanese. Further investigation is warranted to efficiently use the knowledge about genetic factors in combination with modifiable risk factors when we decide an individual's treatment strategy for hyperuricemia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hyperuricemia is associated with metabolic syndrome and has emerged as a marker for both type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. We estimated the prevalence and lifestyle risk factors of hyperuricemia in middle-aged, urban Chinese men. METHODS The study included 3,978 urban Chinese men 40-74 years of age from a population-based cohort study, the Shanghai Men's Health Study, who were free of type 2 diabetes at baseline and had provided fasting blood samples. Uric acid concentrations were measured by the uricase method. Hyperuricemia was defined as >7.0 mg/dL. Anthropometric measurements and information on lifestyle factors and disease history were collected by in-person interviews. RESULTS One quarter of the study subjects had hyperuricemia. Participants with metabolic syndrome had a higher prevalence of hyperuricemia. Body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist circumference, and weight gain (since age 20) were positively associated with the prevalence of hyperuricemia. Physical activity was inversely related to the prevalence of hyperuricemia. The odds ratios for hyperuricemia for quintiles of nonoccupational physical activity were 1.00, 0.80, 0.73, 0.75, and 0.57 (P trend <0.001). Participants with hyperuricemia were less likely to be current smokers, but were more likely to drink alcohol regularly. Beer consumption was associated with higher risk of hyperuricemia compared with consumption of wine or liquor. CONCLUSIONS In this representative sample of middle-aged, urban Chinese men, hyperuricemia is highly prevalent. Obesity, weight gain in adulthood, and alcohol intake were associated with a higher prevalence of hyperuricemia, whereas daily physical activity and smoking were inversely related to the prevalence of hyperuricemia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity and drinking are acknowledged risk factors for hyperuricemia. However, the effect of the interaction between obesity and drinking on hyperuricemia is not well understood. METHODS The cases comprised 3028 male office workers with hyperuricemia (serum uric acid level >or=7.0 mg/dL); the controls were 5348 men with a serum uric acid level less than 6.0 mg/dL. Logistic regression analysis was used to assess risk factors for hyperuricemia and the interaction between obesity and drinking in hyperuricemia. Participants were divided into 2 groups according to their BMI: individuals with a BMI of 25 or higher were classified as obese and those with a BMI less than 25 were classified as non-obese. In addition, participants were divided into 5 groups based upon their ethanol consumption. The 2 variables were then combined to create 10 groups. RESULTS With non-obese non-drinkers as the reference category, the odds ratio for hyperuricemia was 1.80 for non-obese drinkers of less than 25 mL/day of ethanol, 2.15 for non-obese drinkers of 25-49 mL/day, 2.60 for non-obese drinkers of 50-74 mL/day, 2.56 for non-obese drinkers of 75+ mL/day, 4.40 for obese non-drinkers, 5.74 for obese drinkers of less than 25 mL/day, 6.57 for obese drinkers of 25-49 mL/day, 5.55 for obese drinkers of 50-74 mL/day, and 7.77 for obese drinkers of 75+ mL/day. The interaction between obesity and drinking in hyperuricemia was statistically significant. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that although combining the effects of obesity and drinking did not result in a multiplicative increase in the risk for hyperuricemia, the combined risk was greater than the sum of the effects of obesity and drinking.

Abstract
NADH dehydrogenase subunit-2 237 leucine/methionine (ND2-237 Leu/Met) polymorphism is reportedly associated with longevity in the Japanese population. The ND2-237Met genotype may confer resistance to cardiovascular and cerebrovascular atherogenic diseases. Hyperuricemia is one of the risk factors for cardiovascular disease. To investigate whether ND2-237 Leu/Met polymorphism is associated with serum uric acid (SUA) levels, we conducted a cross-sectional study in 321 healthy Japanese male subjects. In nonobese (body mass index, BMI<25) male subjects, interaction between ND2-237 Leu/Met genotypes and drinking frequency on SUA levels was observed (P=0.031). The SUA levels were significantly higher in daily drinkers with ND2-237Leu than in non-daily drinkers with ND2-237Leu (P=0.018). In nonobese men, after adjustment for covariates, daily drinkers with ND2-237Leu had a significantly higher odds ratio (OR) for hyperuricemia (SUA> or =6.5 mg/dl: vs. daily drinkers with ND2-237Met, OR=3.26, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.14-9.29; vs. non-daily drinkers with ND2-237Leu, OR=3.22, 95% CI 1.39-7.45; SUA> or =7.0 mg/dl: vs. non-daily drinkers with ND2-237Met, OR=3.53, 95% CI 1.00-12.4). However, in obese (BMI> or =25) men, no significant interaction between ND2-237 Leu/Met polymorphism and habitual drinking on SUA levels or on the risk for hyperuricemia was observed. These results suggest that ND2-237 Leu/Met polymorphism modulates the effects of daily alcohol consumption on SUA levels in nonobese Japanese men.
