Abstract
OBJECTIVE Considering the rising prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS), this study aimed to investigate the relationship between MetS and its components with oral and dental health in the adult population of the Azar cohort. METHODS In this cross-sectional study oral health care behaviors, DMFT (decayed, missing, and filled teeth) index, and demographic data related to 15,006 patients (5112 in the MetS group and 9894 in the healthy group) of the Azar Cohort population aging from 35 to 70 were collected using appropriate questionnaires. The definition of MetS was based on the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III) criteria. Then, the risk factors of MetS related to oral health behaviors were determined by proper statistical analysis. RESULTS The majority of MetS patients were female (66%) and uneducated (23%) (P < 0.001). In the MetS group, the DMFT index (22.15 ± 8.89) was significantly (p < 0.001) higher (20.81 ± 8.94) than the no MetS group. Not brushing at all was associated with increased odds of MetS (unadjusted OR = 1.12, adjusted OR = 1.18). Flossing less than once a day was associated with increased odds of abdominal obesity (unadjusted OR = 1.17, 95%CI = 1.03-1.32) and hyperglycemia (unadjusted OR = 1.88, 95%CI = 1.61-2.20). CONCLUSIONS This study showed that in MetS patients of the Azar cohort study, oral hygiene was worse compared to that in the no MetS group. Further studies are suggested to encourage oral hygiene among the general population which has more beneficiary effects than has been known before.

Abstract
Objective Given the bidirectional relationship between type 2 diabetes and periodontal disease, this study sought to compile the available data regarding the relationship between home oral hygiene, specifically toothbrushing, and glycemic control and oral health in people with type 2 diabetes. Methods A systematic scoping review was conducted using a combination of controlled vocabulary and keyword terms for type 2 diabetes and home oral care in PubMed and CINHAL. Publications from the past 20 years were considered for inclusion. Study data were summarized. Results A total of 11 studies met our inclusion criteria. In all survey research identified, self-report of more frequent toothbrushing in people with type 2 diabetes was always found to be associated with self-report of better glycemic control and was often associated with better clinician-conducted measures oral health. In the interventional studies identified, health coaching about oral health was associated with improvements in glycemic control, and health coaching compared with health education was found to be associated with enhanced improvement in glycemic control and self-reported toothbrushing behavior. Conclusion The available data suggest that improved engagement in toothbrushing behavior may be associated with improved oral health and better glycemic control in people with type 2 diabetes. Whether improvement in glycemic control is a direct result of change to the oral environment, succeeding with one behavior change stimulating engagement in other health behavior changes, a combination of the two, or something else cannot be determined from this review. Additional studies are needed to further explore the potential for oral health coaching to improve the well-being of people with type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Basal metabolic index (BMI) is a unique anthropometric indicator used to define the relative amount of body fat on an individual's frame. There are many diseases and conditions associated with obesity and underweight. Recent research trials suggest that there is a significant association between oral health indicators and BMI as both are attributed to common risk factors such as dietary, genetic, socioeconomic, and lifestyle issues. OBJECTIVES The main objective of this review paper is to emphasize the association between BMI and oral health with available literature evidence. METHODOLOGY A literature search was conducted using multiple databases comprising of MEDLINE (via PubMed), EMBASE, and Web of Science. The terms used for the search were "body mass index", "periodontitis", "dental caries", and "tooth loss". RESULTS In total, 2839 articles were obtained from the analysis of the databases. Unrelated articles from the available full text of 1135 articles were excluded. The main reasons for excluding the articles were: they were dietary guidelines and policy statements. A total of 66 studies were finally included in the review. CONCLUSION The presence of dental caries, periodontitis and tooth loss may be associated with a higher BMI or obesity, whereas, improved oral health might be associated with lower BMI. Promoting general and oral health should be a hand in hand feature, as common risk factors can be embattled.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the association between oral health behavior and multiple chronic diseases among middle-aged and older adults. METHODS We obtained data of the Beijing Health Service Survey and used multivariate logistic models to estimate the association between oral hygiene behavior and the risk of chronic diseases. RESULTS The risk of any chronic diseases (OR = 1.27, 95% CI: 1.18-1.37), cardiovascular diseases (CVD, OR = 1.30, 95% CI: 1.21-1.39), and endocrine or nutritional metabolic disorders (OR = 1.11, 95% CI: 1.01-1.22) was higher in those who with poor oral health behavior. There was no significant correlation between oral health behavior and the risk of diseases of the musculoskeletal, respiratory, digestive, and genitourinary systems. CONCLUSIONS Poor oral hygiene practices were associated with higher risk of chronic diseases, CVD and diabetes mellitus (DM) among middle-aged and older adults. These findings motivate further studies to evaluate whether improved oral health behavior may prevent the incidence of chronic diseases.

Abstract
Retinal vascular occlusions are a common cause of visual loss. The association between oral health and the risk of retinal vascular occlusions remains unknown. We investigated whether oral health was associated with the risk of retinal vascular occlusions. We conducted a retrospective cohort study including 138,484 participants who completed a national health screening program with an oral health examination from the National Health Insurance Service-National Health Screening Cohort (NHIS-HEALS) 2002-2015. Oral health markers, such as the presence of periodontitis, tooth loss, and dental caries, and the frequency of daily tooth brushing, were evaluated. The primary outcome was the occurrence of retinal vascular occlusions up to December 2015. In total, 2533 participants developed retinal vascular occlusions (215 with retinal artery occlusion, 1686 with retinal vein occlusion, 632 with unspecified retinal vascular occlusion). In the multivariable Cox regression analysis, periodontitis was an independent risk factor for retinal vascular occlusions (adjusted hazard ratio: 1.18; 95% confidence interval: 1.02-1.36; p = 0.024). Frequent tooth brushing was negatively associated with the risk of retinal vascular occlusions (adjusted hazard ratio: 0.89; 95% confidence interval: 0.80-0.98; p = 0.022). Improving oral hygiene may contribute to the attenuation of the risk of retinal vascular occlusions.

Abstract
Background Regardless of attaining adequate knowledge regarding oral hygiene, physical activity, and healthy eating habits, dental students still face oral health problems. This study was aimed to assess the association of oral hygiene habits, physical activity, and eating habits with the BMI in the dental students.
Method This multi centric cross-sectional study was conducted from January to May 2021 in Pakistan. Three hundred and eighty-six study participants enrolled as undergraduate dental students, both males and females, were included in the study. A questionnaire used to gather data, was modified from a study conducted by Jouhar et al. Chi-square testing was used in order to assess the relationship between two categorical variables. Linear regression was performed to assess the association with putative confounders. Statistical significance was considered for p value < 0.05. Results Regarding brushing teeth, 57% of the underweight individuals brushed once daily, 69.8% of the healthy, 79.2% of overweight, and 48% of obese participants brushed twice. Horizontal brushing technique was performed by 50% of the underweight participants, followed by scrub technique. A soft bristled brush was frequently used by underweight (42.9%) and healthy (66%) individuals, while a medium textured bristle brush was used by overweight (62.3%) and obese (54.2%) participants. Majority of the underweight (64.3%), overweight (48.1%), and 45.8% of obese individuals had meals thrice a day, while healthy (62.3%) individuals had meals twice a day.
Conclusion This study further intensified the contributing role of having an excessive dietary intake and sugar consumption in causing obesity and dental caries. Findings from the current study, identify a statistically significant relationship that exists between BMI levels with oral hygiene, eating habits and the physical activity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Studies on the association of oral hygiene indicators with cardiovascular disease in hypertensive patients have been lacking. Oral hygiene is directly or indirectly associated with systemic inflammation, one of the essential mechanisms of cardiovascular disease. Therefore, we hypothesized that oral hygiene would be related to the risk of cardiovascular diseases in hypertensive patients. METHODS We included 52 677 hypertensive participants who completed oral health checkups from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Health Screening Cohort between 2003 and 2004. We collected data on periodontitis diagnosis and treatment history, number of teeth loss, number of dental caries, and frequency of tooth brushing from medical records of health claims and oral health examination. The primary outcome was defined as composite outcomes of stroke and myocardial infarction. Follow-up was done until the date of primary outcome, or 31 December 2015. RESULTS During the 11.26 ± 2.39 years (mean ± standard deviation) of the study follow-up, 3292 participants developed primary outcomes [stroke (n = 2430), myocardial infarction (n = 862)]. In multivariable Cox regression analyses, participants with dental caries (≥ 5) were independently associated with occurrence of a primary outcome [adjusted hazard ratio: 1.37; 95% confidence interval (CI):1.10-1.72; P = 0.006]. Frequent tooth brushing (≥ 2 times/day) was significantly related to lower risk of primary outcomes (adjusted hazard ratio: 0.88; 95% CI: 0.81-0.96; P = 0.002). CONCLUSION Our study demonstrated that multiple dental caries were related to the risk of cardiovascular diseases in hypertensive patients. Better oral hygiene may attenuate the risk of cardiovascular events in hypertensive patients.

Abstract
This study longitudinally examines the relationship between the frequency of toothbrushing and the development of selected components of metabolic syndrome (MetS), along with the potential role of salivary biomarkers in this relationship. In 2014, 6317 12-year-old children underwent health examinations (T1), of which, 348 children participated in the second stage of data collection in 2019 (T2). The association between the change in the metabolic status during the 5-year follow-up examination (between T1 and T2) and frequency of toothbrushing was assessed using multinomial logistic regression analyses. At T2, healthy adolescents had significantly higher odds of toothbrushing twice or more daily compared with adolescents with components of MetS (OR = 1.99, 95% CI 1.15-3.45). Adolescents who were healthy at T1 but developed components of MetS at T2, had significantly higher frequencies of dining-out compared with adolescents with components of MetS at both T1 and T2 (OR = 0.09, 95% CI 0.02 to 0.49). Adolescents who were 'healthy' at both T1 and T2 had significantly (p < 0.05) lower levels of C-reactive protein (T2), insulin (T1 and T2), interleukin-6 (T1) and adiponectin (T1) compared with adolescents who had components of MetS. Toothbrushing and frequency of dining-out were associated with the presence of MetS components.

Abstract
Oral diseases, such as periodontitis and dental caries, can cause systemic inflammation as well as local effects, which is an important contributing factor for obesity. We aimed to investigate the change in body mass index (BMI) according to the presence of periodontitis and oral hygiene indicators. This study enrolled 110,068 participants from the national health screening cohort in Korea from 2009–2010 who underwent an oral health checkup. As oral hygiene indicators, the presence of periodontitis, dental caries, tooth loss, and tooth brushing were assessed. We constructed a linear mixed model for BMI. BMI was repeatedly measured in the health examination until 2015. In the multivariate linear mixed model for BMI, the presence of periodontitis (β = 0.0687, standard error (SE) = 0.0225, p = 0.002), dental caries (β = 0.0735, SE = 0.0152, p < 0.001), and tooth loss (β = 0.1328, SE = 0.0175, p < 0.001) were positively associated with BMI. In contrast, frequent tooth brushing (≥3 times/day) was negatively associated with BMI (β = −0.2610, SE = 0.0306, p < 0.001). The presence of periodontitis, dental caries, and tooth loss may be associated with higher BMI, whereas frequent tooth brushing may be related to lower BMI. Better oral hygiene might be associated with lower BMI. Further study is needed to determine the effect of oral health behavior and dental disease on obesity.
