Abstract
BACKGROUND Patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) in healthcare research is crucial for effectively addressing patients' needs and setting appropriate research priorities. However, there is a lack of awareness and adequate methods for practicing PPIE, especially for vulnerable groups like childhood cancer survivors. AIMS This project aimed to develop and evaluate engagement methods to actively involve pediatric oncological patients, survivors, and their caregivers in developing relevant research questions and practical study designs. METHODS AND RESULTS An interdisciplinary working group recruited n = 16 childhood cancer survivors and their caregivers to work through the entire process of developing a research question and a practicable study design. A systematic literature review was conducted to gather adequate PPIE methods which were then applied and evaluated in a series of three workshop modules, each lasting 1.5 days. The applied methods were continuously evaluated, while a monitoring group oversaw the project and continuously developed and adapted additional methods. The participants rated the different methods with varying scores. Over the workshop series, the participants successfully developed a research question, devised an intervention, and designed a study to evaluate their project. They also reported increased expertise in PPIE and research knowledge compared to the baseline. The project resulted in a practical toolbox for future research, encompassing the final workshop structure, evaluated methods and materials, guiding principles, and general recommendations. CONCLUSION These findings demonstrate that with a diverse set of effective methods and flexible support, actively involving patients, survivors, and caregivers can uncover patients' unmet disease-related needs and generate practical solutions apt for scientific evaluation. The resulting toolbox, filled with evaluated and adaptable methods (workbook, Supplement 1 and 2), equips future scientists with the necessary resources to successfully perform PPIE in the development of health care research projects that effectively integrate patients' perspectives and address actual cancer-related needs. This integration of PPIE practices has the potential to enhance the quality and relevance of health research and care, as well as to increase patient empowerment leading to sustainable improvements in patients' quality of life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Widespread adoption of digital tools and technologies now support the delivery of virtual healthcare. Although, consumer engagement is central to care processes in virtual care models, there is paucity of evidence regarding the nature and outcomes of consumer engagement. This study aimed to determine the nature of consumer engagement used in virtual models of care, and its impact on quality and safety of care. METHODS A systematic review was undertaken with a narrative synthesis, with a search strategy applied to five electronic databases (CINAHL, EMBASE, MEDLINE, PsycINFO and Web of Science) RESULTS: Fifty-eight studies were included in the review that utilised a variety of virtual models of care across care services. Consumer engagement, such as patients' active involvement in monitoring, capturing and reporting their health data, was a common feature of the identified virtual models. CONCLUSION Increasing use of virtual models of care requires consideration of the role of patients and their support persons in the use of technology and in wider care processes that occur at a distance from health professionals. Ensuring consumers are equipped with necessary support to effectively engage in virtual care is important to ensure equity in access to, and outcomes of, virtual care models.

Abstract
CONTEXT Electronic patient-reported outcomes (e-PROs) in pediatric oncology may be useful to track patients' symptoms and quality of life (QoL). However, implementation in the clinical setting is limited and few studies have examined child and parent perspectives on e-PRO usage. OBJECTIVES This brief report aims to explore child and parent perspectives on the benefits of using e-PROs to routinely report on symptoms and QoL. METHODS We analyzed qualitative data embedded within the PediQUEST Response trial, a randomized controlled trial aimed at early palliative care integration for children with advanced cancer and their parents. Study dyads, made up of a child and their parent, completed weekly surveys assessing symptoms and QoL for 18 weeks, and were invited to participate in an audio-recorded exit interview to share study feedback. Interview transcripts were analyzed with a thematic analysis approach, with emergent themes centered on the benefits of e-PRO usage reported here. RESULTS Of 154 total randomized participants, we collected 147 exit interviews representing 105 child participants. Interviewed children (n=47) and parents (n=104) were mostly White and non-Hispanic. Two predominant themes emerged regarding e-PRO benefits:1) raised reflection and awareness of self and others' experiences, and 2) increased communication and connection between parents and children or between study dyads and care teams through survey prompted discussion. CONCLUSION Advanced pediatric cancer patients and their parents found benefit in completing routine e-PROs as they promoted greater reflection and awareness and increased communication. These results may inform further integration of e-PROs in routine pediatric oncology care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To promote patient centered care, children with health issues should be supported to participate in consultations with health care professionals. We aimed to summarize, in a scoping review, the evidence on child participation in triadic encounters and its promotive interventions. METHODS Two researchers systematically searched four major databases, and included studies on child participation in medical consultations. A synthesis of quantitative and qualitative data was made. RESULTS Of 1678 retrieved records, 39 papers were included: 22 quantitative, 14 qualitative and 3 mixed-methods studies. Child participation, measured by utterances, turns or speech time, ranged between 4% and 14%. Participation increased with age. Equidistant seating arrangements, child-directed gaze and finding the appropriate tone of voice by the physician promoted child participation. Despite all facilitative efforts of doctors and parents, such as social talk, eHealth tools or consultation education, no increase in child participation was observed over the last 50 years. CONCLUSIONS Children continue to participate only marginally in medical consultations, despite their desire to be involved in various aspects of the clinical encounter and their right to have their voice heard. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Health care professionals should provide more opportunities for children to participate in triadic medical encounters and create an inclusive environment.

Abstract
Child-centered communication in pediatric oncology can be challenging. We aimed to review communication interventions with children about cancer treatment and prognosis to identify potentially effective child-centered communication models and approaches. We updated a previous review on communication interventions in oncology and searched MEDLINE, Scopus, and PsychINFO for studies indexed between October 2019 up to October 2022. We further searched for ongoing studies on ClinicalTrials.gov. Communication interventions targeting pediatric oncology patients (below 18 years), with outcomes of communication, psychological symptoms or satisfaction in the target population were eligible. We identified 685 titles/abstracts, screened the full text of 34 studies and included only one published study and two ongoing studies. The published study tested a communication tool to help clinicians inform adolescents about treatment options and facilitate shared decision-making. No communication models were identified. We drew on knowledge from existing studies and guidelines to develop a new child-centered communication model.

Abstract
Objective In recent years, childhood cancers have become an increasingly important health problem worldwide. Evidence shows that technology-based interventions in pediatric oncology are effective, feasible, and acceptable. However, studies in this field are limited. This systematic review was planned to examine the available evidence for the impact of technology-based interventions on children, adolescents with cancer patients, and their parents. Methods In the systematic review, studies published between 2014 and 2023 from The Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) Plus with Full Text, Cochrane Library, PsycINFO, ProQuest PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were identified using a search strategy. Six studies by the criteria were examined in terms of the technology-based intervention, the intervention's duration, the follow-up period, significant findings, and the theory used in the intervention. The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal tools were used to evaluate the quality of the studies. In this systematic review, preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed. Results A total of six studies met the inclusion criteria: five randomized controlled trials and one quasi-experimental study. In studies for children with cancer, it was determined that the children were between the ages of 6 and 18. It has been determined that technology-based interventions mostly consist of electronic health interventions such as web-based interventions, virtual reality, and digital and mobile health interventions such as messaging, phone contact, and smartphone applications. In the studies, the intervention period ranged from 1 to 1.5 h and 10 weeks, and the follow-up periods ranged from 12 weeks to 6 months. In studies for parents, it was observed that the intervention durations ranged from 8 to 12 weeks, and the follow-up periods varied between 3 and 12 months. In most of the studies, technology-based applications have positive effects on the physical and psychological (symptom management, anxiety, stress, coping, and quality of life) problems of children and adolescents. Technology-based interventions affect parents' knowledge levels and coping skills, psychosocial symptoms (anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and caregiver burden), resilience, social support, and self-efficacy. Conclusions Technology-based interventions have been effective in improving physical and psychological symptoms in children with cancer, and parents' coping and psychosocial symptoms. These results should be interpreted with caution due to the limited number of studies, small sample sizes, and high heterogeneity. Comprehensive and high-quality randomized controlled trials are needed to obtain the best evidence for the effectiveness of technology-based interventions in pediatric oncology. Abstract
Background An increase in the demand for child participation in health care requires tools that enable and empower children to be involved in the co-production of their own care. The development of such tools should involve children, but participatory design and research with children have challenges, in particular, when involving children with disabilities where a low level of participation is the norm. Norm-creative and participatory approaches may bring more effective design solutions for this group. “Personas” is a methodology for increasing user perspectives in design and offers representation when users are absent. However, research on participatory persona generation in this context is limited. Objective The objective of this study was to investigate how norm-creative and participatory design approaches can be integrated in a persona generation method to suit children with disabilities in the design of games for health that target this group. Methods The method development involved interview transcripts and image-based workshops. Sixteen children with various disabilities participated in persona generation through co-creation of characters and scenarios. The results from the workshops were validated together with 8 children without disabilities, 1 young adult with a disability, and 1 rehabilitation professional. A qualitative thematic design analysis was iterated throughout the process. Results The results consisted of an image-based and iterative co-construction method. It was accompanied by examples of personas that were generated and validated within a games for health case. The method showed effectiveness in enabling flexible co-construction and communication. The data resonated with social model perspectives, and the development is discussed in terms of participation levels, salutogenic descriptions of barriers, and norm-creative tradeoffs. Conclusions The resulting method may influence future design projects toward more inclusiveness and enable increased representation for children with disabilities in research and design. Using this method to its full potential requires a norm-critical awareness as well as extensive facilitation. Suggestions for further research include the application of the method to design processes in similar contexts or user groups.

Abstract
Ensuring that children have opportunities to be involved in decision-making regarding their own care is associated with quality improvement in pediatric rehabilitation. The aim of the study was to explore parents' perceptions of the value of children's participation in pediatric rehabilitation services. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 17 parents of children with disabilities who visited pediatric rehabilitation services. A phenomenographic analysis method was used. Three categories developed from the analysis describing how participation generated value in terms of empowerment, self-awareness, and independence. The outcome space describes a hierarchical relationship between the categories and their influence on each other. Independence achieved through participation was a core aspect and is at the highest level in the hierarchy since it includes and depends on the outcomes from both empowerment and self-awareness. Parents' perceptions of the value of children's participation in pediatric rehabilitation services include the possibility for the child to use their entire capacity through values created in terms of empowerment, self-awareness, and independence, in order to live the best life possible. Children with disabilities are diverse as a group, and further research to identify barriers and facilitators of participation is needed to adjust interventions within pediatric rehabilitation services to ensure that children with disabilities can be increasingly empowered, self-aware, and independent.

Abstract
In order to develop suitable support for participation in pediatric rehabilitation, it is important to understand what barriers need to be bridged from the perspectives of both children and adults. The aim of this study was to explore barriers to participation in pediatric rehabilitation services, according to children and young people with disabilities, parents to children with disabilities, and professionals. Data was collected in individual interviews (n = 48) and focus groups (n = 8), which were analyzed with qualitative content analysis to extract barriers to participation. Identified barriers include three categories: (1) insufficient access (controlling adults, adult-centered healthcare); (2) insufficient trust (low level of trust in adults, low level of trust in children, low self-confidence in children); and (3) insufficient involvement (norms of non-participation, low level of commitment in children). The participant groups had divergent conceptions of where and how barriers originate, and for what situations child participation is appropriate. Adult-centered healthcare and parental presence were described as barriers by all participant groups. Understanding differences in the perceptions of barriers and their origins is crucial when striving to change norms of non-participation. The findings can inform the development of new support tools and participatory formats in pediatric rehabilitation.
