Technology-based interventions for tobacco smoking prevention and treatment: a 20-year bibliometric analysis (2003-2022)

BACKGROUND

Substance abuse, particularly tobacco smoking, is a significant global public health concern. Efforts have been made to reduce smoking prevalence and promote cessation, but challenges, such as nicotine addiction, marketing tactics by tobacco industry, and cultural acceptability hinder progress. Technology has emerged as a potential tool to address these challenges by providing innovative scalable interventions. The objective of the study was to analyze and map scientific literature on technology-based intervention for tobacco prevention and treatment.

METHODS

A bibliometric methodology was conducted. Scopus database was used to retrieve relevant research articles published between 2003 and 2022. The analysis included publication trends, key contributors, research hotspots, research themes, the most impactful articles, and emerging research topics.

RESULTS

A total of 639 articles were found, with a slow and fluctuating growth pattern observed after 2011. The Journal of Medical Internet Research was the most prominent journal in the field. The United States was the leading country in the field, followed up by the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands. Research hotspots included smoking cessation, randomized controlled trials, and technology-based methods such as internet, mHealth, smartphone apps, text messages, and social media. Four primary research themes were identified: development of smartphone applications, efficacy of text messaging interventions, acceptance and effectiveness of smartphone applications, and interventions targeting young adults and students using mobile phone and social media platforms. The top 10 cited articles demonstrated effectiveness of digital interventions in promoting smoking cessation rates and reducing relapse rates. Emerging research topics included the use of virtual reality interventions, interventions for specific populations through personalized tools, and technology-based interventions in non-Western countries.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings of the current study highlight the potential of technology to address the challenges associated with tobacco smoking. Further future research in this area is warranted to continue advancing the field and developing effective and evidence-based interventions to combat tobacco smoking.

Exploring user experiences of a text message-delivered intervention among individuals on opioid use disorder treatment in Kenya: A qualitative study

Opioid use disorder causes significant burden of disease and treatment comprises pharmacotherapy and psychosocial treatment. Cognitive behavioral therapy is an effective psychosocial intervention used in substance use disorders treatment and can be delivered using digital approach. There is limited use of digital treatment among individuals with opioid use disorder in Kenya. This study aimed to describe the experiences and feedback from participants with opioid use disorder enrolled in a text-message intervention in Kenya. Qualitative data was collected from participants in the intervention arm of a feasibility trial testing a text-message intervention based on cognitive behavioral therapy. Data was collected using open-ended questions in a questionnaire and structured in-depth interviews amongst those who received the intervention. Framework method was applied for analysis. Twenty-four participants (83.3% males) were enrolled with a mean age of 32.5 years (SD9.5). Five themes were identified namely: (1) Gain of cognitive behavioral therapy skills which included: identification and change of substance use patterns; drug refusal skills; coping with craving and self-efficacy; (2) Therapeutic alliance which included: development of a bond and agreement on treatment goals; (3) Feedback on intervention components and delivery such as: frequency, and duration of the text message intervention; (4) Challenges experienced during the intervention such as: technical problems with phones; and barriers related to intervention delivery; (5) Recommendations for improvement of intervention in future implementations. The findings demonstrated participants' satisfaction with intervention, gain of skills to change substance use patterns, highlighted challenges experienced and suggestions on improving the intervention among individuals with opioid use disorder. The feedback and recommendations provided by the participants can guide implementation of such interventions to allow acceptability, effectiveness and sustainability. The effectiveness of a motivational text-messaging program for smoking cessation after coronary angioplasty: a quasi-experimental study

OBJECTIVE

Smoking is an important risk factor of coronary artery stenosis after angioplasty. Therefore, this investigation aimed to determine the effectiveness of a motivational text-messaging program for smoking cessation after coronary angioplasty. This quasi-experimental study was conducted on 100 patients after angioplasty. The patients were divided randomly into two intervention and control groups. The intervention group received 32 text messages about smoking cessation for 2 months. The control group received only routine training. The primary and secondary outcomes were success and self-efficacy in quitting smoking cigarettes, respectively. Both groups filled out the related questionnaires before and after the intervention. The data were analyzed using SPSS software version 22 and Chi-square tests, independent t-test, and paired t-test. P < 0.05 was considered significant.

RESULTS

Success in quitting cigarette smoking was significantly higher in the intervention group (n = 29, 61.7%) compared to the control group (n = 2, 4.3%) (p < 0.001). Moreover, after the intervention, the mean score of self-efficacy in the intervention group (11.01 ± 44.75) was significantly higher than the control group (6.51 ± 3.11) and also higher than before the intervention (5.51 ± 2.44) (P˂0.001). The motivational text-messaging program can improve self-efficacy and success in smoking cessation in patients after coronary angioplasty.
