Digital photography: a primer for pathologists

The computer and the digital camera provide a unique means for improving hematology education, research, and patient service. High quality photographic images of gross specimens can be rapidly and conveniently acquired with a high-resolution digital camera, and specialized digital cameras have been developed for photomicroscopy. Digital cameras utilize charge-coupled devices (CCD) or Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) image sensors to measure light energy and additional circuitry to convert the measured information into a digital signal. Since digital cameras do not utilize photographic film, images are immediately available for incorporation into web sites or digital publications, printing, transfer to other individuals by email, or other applications. Several excellent digital still cameras are now available for less than 2,500 dollars that capture high quality images comprised of more than 6 megapixels. These images are essentially indistinguishable from conventional film images when viewed on a quality color monitor or printed on a quality color or black and white printer at sizes up to 11x14 inches. Several recent dedicated digital photomicroscopy cameras provide an ultrahigh quality image output of more than 12 megapixels and have low noise circuit designs permitting the direct capture of darkfield and fluorescence images. There are many applications of digital images of pathologic specimens. Since pathology is a visual science, the inclusion of quality digital images into lectures, teaching handouts, and electronic documents is essential. A few institutions have gone beyond the basic application of digital images to developing large electronic hematology atlases, animated, audio-enhanced learning experiences, multidisciplinary Internet conferences, and other innovative applications. Digital images of single microscopic fields (single frame images) are the most widely utilized in hematology education at this time, but single images of many adjacent microscopic fields can be stitched together to prepare "zoomable" panoramas that encompass a large part of a microscope slide and closely simulate observation through a real microscope. With further advances in computer speed and Internet streaming technology, the virtual microscope could easily replace the real microscope in pathology education. Later in this decade, interactive immersive computer experiences may completely revolutionize hematology education and make the conventional lecture and laboratory format obsolete. Patient care is enhanced by the transmission of digital images to other individuals for consultation and education, and by the inclusion of these images in patient care documents. In research laboratories, digital cameras are widely used to document experimental results and to obtain experimental data.

Digital Image Processing: A Primer for JVIR Authors and Readers

This is the second installment of a three-part series on digital image processing intended to prepare authors for online submission of manuscripts. In the first article of the series, we reviewed the fundamentals of digital image architecture. In this article, we describe the ways that an author can import digital images to the computer desktop. We explore the modern imaging network and explain how to import picture archiving and communications systems (PACS) images to the desktop. Options and techniques for producing digital hard copy film are also presented.

Conversion of teaching file cases from film to digital format: a comparison between use of a diagnostic-quality digitizer and use of a flatbed scanner with transparency adapter

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES

The authors' institution had decided to convert its radiology teaching files from film to digital media. This study was performed to determine the simplest method for converting the analog film images to digital images without a subsequent loss in diagnostic accuracy.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Twenty chest radiographs that demonstrated interstitial lung disease were randomly selected from the departmental teaching files and matched with 20 control radiographs from healthy adults. Analog film images were converted with both a diagnostic-quality film image digitizer (digitized) and a flatbed scanner equipped with a transparency adapter (scanned). Three radiology faculty members reviewed a mixed set of corresponding analog film, digitized, and scanned images. Reviewers judged whether each image depicted interstitial lung disease, indicated their level of confidence in the diagnosis, and rated each image for quality. Image quality was assessed by each reviewer subjectively at the time of viewing the individual image, without regard to other images. A one-way analysis of variance was performed to determine whether there was a statistically significant difference in diagnostic accuracy between the three image formats. Agreement in diagnosis between corresponding images in the three different formats was evaluated for each reviewer with the McNemar test.

RESULTS

There was no statistically significant difference in diagnostic accuracy between analog film and scanned images, but there was such a difference between these two groups and digitized images. Accuracy was 97% for analog film, 94% for scanned, and 89% for digitized images. Results of the McNemar test showed no statistically significant difference in agreement between the analog film images and the scanned images for any of the reviewers (P > .05).

CONCLUSION

A high-end flatbed scanner with transparency adapter provided accurate, simple, and inexpensive conversion of analog film teaching files to digital format, with no loss of the ability to detect or diagnose subtle abnormalities such as interstitial lung disease.

Software-annotated, digitally photographed, and printed MR images: suitability for publication

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES

The authors performed this study to evaluate whether digitally photographed, computer-annotated MR images produced by clinical radiologists and printed with an inexpensive photo printer are suitable for publication.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Laser prints of 20 magnetic resonance images of the brain were photographed with a 3-megapixel digital camera and annotated with arrows, arrowheads, and asterisks by using graphics software that incorporates vector support. Then, 5 x 7-inch glossy prints with white borders were made by using an inexpensive photo printer. These prints were compared with those produced of the same 20 images by members of the medical center's graphics department with professional scanning and printing equipment and annotated with conventional rub-on symbols. Eight radiologists evaluated image and annotation quality and overall suitability for publication.

RESULTS

In all three categories, the images produced by radiologists outscored those produced by the graphics department.

CONCLUSION

Digitally photographed, software-annotated MR images printed with an inexpensive photo printer are suitable for publication.
