From mobile crowdsourcing to crowd-trusted food price in Nigeria: statistical pre-processing and post-sampling

Timely and reliable monitoring of food market prices at high spatial and temporal resolution is essential to understanding market and food security developments and supporting timely policy and decision-making. Mostly, decisions rely on price expectations, which are updated with new information releases. Therefore, increasing the availability and timeliness of price information has become a national and international priority. We present two new datasets in which mobile app-based crowdsourced daily price observations, voluntarily submitted by self-selected participants, are validated in real-time within spatio-temporal markets (pre-processed data). Then, they are reweighted weekly using their geo-location to resemble a formal sample design and allow for more reliable statistical inference (post-sampled data). Using real-time data collected in Nigeria, we assess the accuracy and propose that our reweighted estimates are more accurate with respect to the unweighted version. Results have important implications for governments, food chain actors, researchers and other organisations.

Optimal two-stage spatial sampling design for estimating critical parameters of SARS-CoV-2 epidemic: Efficiency versus feasibility

The COVID-19 pandemic presents an unprecedented clinical and healthcare challenge for the many medical researchers who are attempting to prevent its worldwide spread. It also presents a challenge for statisticians involved in designing appropriate sampling plans to estimate the crucial parameters of the pandemic. These plans are necessary for monitoring and surveillance of the phenomenon and evaluating health policies. In this respect, we can use spatial information and aggregate data regarding the number of verified infections (either hospitalized or in compulsory quarantine) to improve the standard two-stage sampling design broadly adopted for studying human populations. We present an optimal spatial sampling design based on spatially balanced sampling techniques. We prove its relative performance analytically in comparison to other competing sampling plans, and we also study its properties through a series of Monte Carlo experiments. Considering the optimal theoretical properties of the proposed sampling plan and its feasibility, we discuss suboptimal designs that approximate well optimality and are more readily applicable.

Georeferenced data in epidemiologic research

This paper reviews some conceptual and practical issues regarding the application of georeferenced data in epidemiologic research. Starting with the disease mapping tradition of geographical medicine, topics such as types of georeferenced data, implications for data analysis, spatial autocorrelation and main analytical approaches are heuristically discussed, relying on examples from the epidemiologic literature, most of them concerning mapping disease distribution, detection of disease spatial clustering, evaluation of exposure in environmental health investigation and ecological correlation studies. As for concluding remarks, special topics that deserve further development, including the misuses of the concept of space in epidemiologic research, issues related to data quality and confidentiality, the role of epidemiologic designs for spatial research, sensitivity analysis and spatiotemporal modeling, are presented.

Pratique de l’analyse de l’autocorrélation spatiale en géomorphologie : définitions opératoires et tests

 L’autocorrélation spatiale peut être définie comme la ressemblance des valeurs prises par une variable, exprimée en fonction de leur localisation géographique. L’analyse de l’autocorrélation permet de quantifier la régularité spatiale d’un phénomène (une forme de complexité spatiale) et de déterminer la portée de la dépendance spatiale afin, notamment, de définir un dispositif d’échantillonnage garantissant l’indépendance des données, autorisant ainsi l’utilisation des tests statistiques usuels. L’article aborde trois points : i) définition opératoire de l’autocorrélation pour des variables quantitatives ou qualitatives ; ii) utilisation des tests de randomisation pour tester l’hypothèse nulle d’absence d’autocorrélation ; iii) illustration des deux points précédents par des exemples. Trois jeux de données simulés sont présentés pour illustrer les différences entre les statistiques : le premier ne présente aucune structure spatiale, le deuxième est caractérisé par une structure spatiale périodique, le troisième est un gradient linéaire. Deux jeux de données géomorphologiques sont également analysés : i) une série de segments fluviaux élémentaires, distribués longitudinalement, et sur lesquels ont été mesurées la largeur et l’incision d’un lit fluvial ; ii) la cartographie des formes d’érosion d’un bassin versant, traitée comme une image matricielle. Dans le premier cas, la structure emboîtée des tronçons géomorphologiquement homogènes est mise en lumière, et ce à différentes échelles spatiales. Le second exemple montre qu’une analyse omnidirectionnelle peut conduire à sous-estimer la portée de l’autocorrélation lorsque le phénomène étudié présente une orientation géographique privilégiée. Dans ce cas, il peut s’avérer impossible de définir un échantillon de données spatialement indépendantes, répondant aux exigences des tests statistiques classiques.
