Shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets to enamel after application of a caries infiltrant

Correlation of Shear Bond Strength and Degree of Conversion in Conventional and Self-Adhesive Systems Used in Orthodontic Bonding Procedures

(1) Background: Self-adhesive systems have been proposed for the orthodontic bonding with the intention to reduce the traditional three-component system. (2) Methods: The sample consisted of 32 extracted intact permanent premolars randomly divided into two groups (n = 16). In Group I the metal brackets were bonded with Transbond XT Primer and Transbond XT Paste. In Group II the metal brackets were bonded with GC Ortho connect. The resin was polymerized for 20 s from two directions (mesial and occlusal) using a Bluephase light-curing unit. The shear bond strength (SBS) was measured using a universal testing machine. Immediately after SBS testing, Raman microspectrometry was performed for each sample to calculate the degree of conversion (DC). (3) Results: There was no statistically significant difference in the SBS between the two groups. A significantly higher DC (p < 0.001) value was recorded in Group II, in which the brackets were bonded with GC. Very weak or no correlation (0.01) was recorded between SBS and DC in Group I and moderate positive correlation was recorded in Group II (0.33). (4) Conclusions: No difference was found in SBS between the conventional and two-step systems used in orthodontics. The two-step system demonstrated higher DC compared to the conventional system. There is a very weak or moderate correlation between DC and SBS.

Shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets on intact and demineralized enamel after application of resin infiltrant, fluoride varnish and casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate remineralizing agents: in-vitro study

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the effects of remineralizing agents on the shear bond strength (SBS) of orthodontic brackets bonded to intact and demineralized enamel.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

In this in-vitro study, 160 human premolars were divided into 8 groups, including group 1 with intact enamel as the positive control, group 2 with demineralized enamel as the negative control, groups 3-5 treated with fluoride varnish, Casein Phosphopeptide-Amorphous Calcium Phosphate (CPP-ACP) and resin infiltrant on intact enamel, and groups 6-8 treated with the same agents on demineralized enamel. Brackets were bonded using the conventional method, and the samples were thermocycled. SBS of the brackets was measured using a universal testing machine, and the adhesive remnant index (ARI) was assessed. Data were analysed with one-way ANOVA and post hoc statistical test at the significance level of 0.05.

RESULTS

SBS of the brackets in all groups with intact enamel was higher than that of their counterparts on demineralized enamel, which was only significantly different between groups 1 and 2 (P-value<0.001). SBS values of groups 7 and 8 were not significantly different from group 1 (P-value=1), yet the application of fluoride varnish on both intact (P-value=0.091) and demineralized enamel (P-value<0.001) created less SBS than in group 1.

CONCLUSIONS

All pre-treatment methods increased SBS of the brackets bonded to demineralized enamel, yet only the resin infiltrant and CPP-ACP produced SBS similar to that of intact enamel. Also, the use of fluoride varnish on intact enamel significantly reduced SBS.

The orthodontic bonding properties of human enamel after cryopreservation

The aim was to investigate the effect of cryopreservation on the enamel bonding properties of orthodontic brackets. Sixty-six human premolars were randomly allocated to a control group or a cryopreserved group. Conventional stainless-steel orthodontic brackets were bonded with a light cure adhesive on the buccal side of the premolars. The shear bond strength (SBS) was determined at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. The SBS and adhesive remnant index (ARI) were evaluated respectively by an independent samples t test and Fisher's exact test (α≤0.05). The mean failure load was lower in the cryopreserved group. However, this difference in SBS was not significant (p=0.443). In both groups, the ARI mostly indicated a failure at the enamel-adhesive interface. The mean ARI scores for both groups were not significantly different (p=0.099). Within the limitations of this macro bond strength testing, it can be concluded that cryopreservation does not significantly affect the bonding properties of enamel.

Improving shear bond strength of metallic brackets after whitening

Objective:

To evaluate a protocol for bonding metallic brackets after bleaching with hydrogen peroxide (HP).

Methods:

60 extracted maxillary premolar were randomly divided into an unbleached control group and two groups bleached with a solution of 35% hydrogen peroxide prior to bonding. The teeth in one of the treated groups were bonded immediately after bleaching; while the other group was treated with 10% sodium ascorbate immediately after bleaching and before bonding. The teeth in all groups were stored in an artificial saliva solution for 7 days after bonding. The shear bond strength data was measured in megapascals (MPa) and the fail attempts were verified. The significance level was established at p< 0.05.

Results:

The unbleached group, in which brackets were bonded to untreated enamel, had the highest bond strength values (11.0 ± 5.7MPa) in comparison to the bleached group (7.14 ± 40MPa), in which brackets were bonded to recently bleached enamel. Slightly improved bond strength was observed in the antioxidant group (8.13 ± 5.4MPa), in which the teeth were bleached and then the antioxidant was applied to the teeth before bonding. Unbleached and bleached groups showed statistically significant difference for shear bond strength (p=0.03) and load strength (p=0.03); no significant differences were noted between unbleached and antioxidant groups (p=0.52).

Conclusion:

The antioxidant treatment applied immediately after bleaching was effective in reversing the reduction in shear bond strength of brackets after tooth bleaching.

Assessment of the resin infiltration and CPP-ACP applications before orthodontic brackets bonding

The aim of this study is to investigate the efficiency of casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) gel and resin infiltrant on decalcified enamel, and to explain the correlation, if any, between ion release capacities and shear bond strength (SBS). A total of 80 premolar teeth were used (n=20). Group I was the control, while a demineralization protocol was performed for other groups. CPP-ACP gel and resin infiltrant, respectively, was applied to Groups III and IV. Pre and post-demineralization energy dispersive X-Ray analysis of all groups and post-application of Groups III and IV were undertaken. SBS tests were performed. Ca/P ratio significantly increased after the applications. Both agent groups showed a significant decrease in SBS values compared to others. There was no correlation between SBS and Ca/P ratio changes. It can be said that CPP-ACP and resin infiltrant therapies enhance the tooth mineral content, but show lesser SBS values than the control and demineralization only groups.
