Two new species of the genus Micromonospora: Micromonospora chokoriensis sp. nov. and Micromonospora coxensis sp. nov., isolated from sandy soil

Multifunctional in vitro, in silico and DFT analyses on antimicrobial BagremycinA biosynthesized by Micromonospora chokoriensis CR3 from Hieracium canadense

Among the actinomycetes in the rare genera, Micromonospora is of great interest since it has been shown to produce novel therapeutic compounds. Particular emphasis is now on its isolation from plants since its population from soil has been extensively explored. The strain CR3 was isolated as an endophyte from the roots of Hieracium canadense, and it was identified as Micromonospora chokoriensis through 16S gene sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. The in-vitro analysis of its extract revealed it to be active against the clinical isolates of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Candida tropicalis (15 mm). No bioactivity was observed against Gram-negative bacteria, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, and Klebsiella pneumoniae ATCC 706003. The Micromonospora chokoriensis CR3 extract was also analyzed through the HPLC-DAD-UV-VIS resident database, and it gave a maximum match factor of 997.334 with the specialized metabolite BagremycinA (BagA). The in-silico analysis indicated that BagA strongly interacted with the active site residues of the sterol 14-α demethylase and thymidylate kinase enzymes, with the lowest binding energies of - 9.7 and - 8.3 kcal/mol, respectively. Furthermore, the normal mode analysis indicated that the interaction between these proteins and BagA was stable. The DFT quantum chemical properties depicted BagA to be reasonably reactive with a HOMO-LUMO gap of (ΔE) of 4.390 eV. BagA also passed the drug-likeness test with a synthetic accessibility score of 2.06, whereas Protox-II classified it as a class V toxicity compound with high LD50 of 2644 mg/kg. The current study reports an endophytic actinomycete, M. chokoriensis, associated with H. canadense producing the bioactive metabolite BagA with promising antimicrobial activity, which can be further modified and developed into a safe antimicrobial drug.

Micromonospora parastrephiae sp. nov. and Micromonospora tarensis sp. nov., isolated from the rhizosphere of a Parastrephia quadrangularis plant growing in the Salar de Tara region of the Central Andes in Chile

Two novel Micromonospora strains, STR1-7T and STR1S-6T, were isolated from the rhizosphere of a Parastrephia quadrangularis plant growing in the Salar de Tara region of the Atacama Desert, Chile. Chemotaxonomic, cultural and phenotypic features confirmed that the isolates belonged to the genus Micromonospora. They grew from 20 to 37 °C, from pH7 to 8 and in the presence of up to 3 %, w/v NaCl. The isolates formed distinct branches in Micromonospora gene trees based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and on a multi-locus sequence analysis of conserved house-keeping genes. A phylogenomic tree generated from the draft genomes of the isolates and their closest phylogenetic neighbours showed that isolate STR1-7T is most closely related to Micromonospora orduensis S2509T, and isolate STR1S-6 T forms a distinct branch that is most closely related to 12 validly named Micromonospora species, including Micromonospora saelicesensis the earliest proposed member of the group. The isolates were separated from one another and from their closest phylogenomic neighbours using a combination of chemotaxonomic, genomic and phenotypic features, and by low average nucleotide index and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values. Consequently, it is proposed that isolates STR1-7T and STR1S-6T be recognized as representing new species in the genus Micromonospora, namely as Micromonospora parastrephiae sp. nov. and Micromonospora tarensis sp. nov.; the type strains are STR1-7T (=CECT 9665T=LMG 30768T) and STR1S-6T (=CECT 9666T=LMG 30770T), respectively. Genome mining showed that the isolates have the capacity to produce novel specialized metabolites, notably antibiotics and compounds that promote plant growth, as well as a broad-range of stress-related genes that provide an insight into how they cope with harsh abiotic conditions that prevail in high-altitude Atacama Desert soils.

Micromonospora acroterricola sp. nov., a novel actinobacterium isolated from a high altitude Atacama Desert soil

A Micromonospora strain, designated 5R2A7^T, isolated from a high altitude Atacama Desert soil was examined by using a polyphasic approach. Strain 5R2A7^T was found to have morphological, chemotaxonomic and cultural characteristics typical of members of the genus Micromonospora. The cell wall contains meso- and hydroxy-diaminopimelic acid, the major whole-cell sugars are glucose, ribose and xylose, the predominant menaquinones MK-10(H₄), MK-10(H₆), MK-10(H₈) and MK-9(H₆), the major polar lipids diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol and an unknown glycolipid, and the predominant cellular fatty acids iso-C_16 : 0, iso-C_15 : 0 and 10-methyl C_17 : 0. The digital genomic DNA G+C content is 72.3 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that strain 5R2A7^T was closely related to Micromonospora coriariae DSM 44875^T (99.8 %) and Micromonospora cremea CR30^T (99.7 %), and was separated readily from the latter, its closest phylogenetic neighbour, based on gyrB and multilocus sequence data, by low average nucleotide identity (92.59 %) and in silico DNA-DNA relatedness (51.7 %) values calculated from draft genome assemblies and by a range of chemotaxonomic and phenotypic properties. Consequently, strain 5R2A7^T is considered to represent a novel species of Micromonospora for which the name Micromonospora acroterricola sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 5R2A7^T (=LMG 30755^T=CECT 9656^T).

Uncovering the potential of novel micromonosporae isolated from an extreme hyper-arid Atacama Desert soil

The taxonomic status, biotechnological and ecological potential of several Micromonospora strains isolated from an extreme hyper arid Atacama Desert soil were determined. Initially, a polyphasic study was undertaken to clarify the taxonomic status of five micromonosporae, strains LB4, LB19, LB32T, LB39T and LB41, isolated from an extreme hyper-arid soil collected from one of the driest regions of the Atacama Desert. All of the isolates were found to have chemotaxonomic, cultural and morphological properties consistent with their classification in the genus Micromonospora. Isolates LB32T and LB39T were distinguished from their nearest phylogenetic neighbours and proposed as new species, namely as Micromonospora arida sp. nov. and Micromonospora inaquosa sp. nov., respectively. Eluted methanol extracts of all of the isolates showed activity against a panel of bacterial and fungal indicator strains, notably against multi-drug resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae ATCC 700603 while isolates LB4 and LB41 showed pronounced anti-tumour activity against HepG2 cells. Draft genomes generated for the isolates revealed a rich source of novel biosynthetic gene clusters, some of which were unique to individual strains thereby opening up the prospect of selecting especially gifted micromonosporae for natural product discovery. Key stress-related genes detected in the genomes of all of the isolates provided an insight into how micromonosporae adapt to the harsh environmental conditions that prevail in extreme hyper-arid Atacama Desert soils.

Genome-based classification of micromonosporae with a focus on their biotechnological and ecological potential

There is a need to clarify relationships within the actinobacterial genus Micromonospora, the type genus of the family Micromonosporaceae, given its biotechnological and ecological importance. Here, draft genomes of 40 Micromonospora type strains and two non-type strains are made available through the Genomic Encyclopedia of Bacteria and Archaea project and used to generate a phylogenomic tree which showed they could be assigned to well supported phyletic lines that were not evident in corresponding trees based on single and concatenated sequences of conserved genes. DNA G+C ratios derived from genome sequences showed that corresponding data from species descriptions were imprecise. Emended descriptions include precise base composition data and approximate genome sizes of the type strains. antiSMASH analyses of the draft genomes show that micromonosporae have a previously unrealised potential to synthesize novel specialized metabolites. Close to one thousand biosynthetic gene clusters were detected, including NRPS, PKS, terpenes and siderophores clusters that were discontinuously distributed thereby opening up the prospect of prioritising gifted strains for natural product discovery. The distribution of key stress related genes provide an insight into how micromonosporae adapt to key environmental variables. Genes associated with plant interactions highlight the potential use of micromonosporae in agriculture and biotechnology.

Micromonospora profundi sp. nov., isolated from deep marine sediment

A novel actinobacterial strain, designated DS3010T, was isolated from a Black Sea marine sediment and characterized using a polyphasic approach. The strain was shown to have chemotaxonomic, morphological and phylogenetic properties consistent with classification as representing a member of the genus Micromonospora. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence studies showed that the strain was most closely related to the type strains of Micromonospora saelicesensis (99.5 %), Micromonospora chokoriensis (99.4 %) and Micromonospora violae (99.3 %). Similarly, a corresponding analysis based on partial gyrB gene sequences showed that it formed a distinct phyletic branch in a subclade that included the type strains of Micromonosporazamorensis, 'Micromonospora zeae', 'Micromonospora jinlongensis', M. saelicesensis and Micromonospora lupini. DS3010T was distinguished from its closest phylogenetic neighbours by low levels of DNA-DNA relatedness and by a combination of chemotaxonomic and phenotypic properties. On the basis of these data, it is proposed that the isolate should be assigned to the genus Micromonospora as Micromonospora profundi sp. nov. with isolate DS3010T (=DSM 45981T=KCTC 29243T) as the type strain.

Two new species of the genus Micromonospora: Micromonospora palomenae sp. nov. and Micromonospora harpali sp. nov. isolated from the insects

Two novel actinobacteria, strains NEAU-CX1(T) and NEAU-JC6(T), were isolated from nymphs of stinkbug (Palomena viridissima Poda) and a beetle (Harpalus sinicus Hope), respectively, collected from Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, China. A polyphasic study was carried out to establish the taxonomic positions of these strains. The phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain NEAU-CX1(T) showed it to be most closely related to Micromonospora coxensis JCM 13248(T) (99.3 % sequence similarity), Micromonospora purpureochromogenes DSM 43821(T) (99.1 %) and Micromonospora halophytica JCM 3125(T) (98.6 %), and that of strain NEAU-JC6(T) to Micromonospora haikouensis DSM 45626(T) (99.3 %), Micromonospora carbonacea JCM 3139(T) (99.1 %) and Micromonospora krabiensis JCM 12869(T) (99.1 %). The phylogenetic analysis based on gyrB gene sequence of strain NEAU-CX1(T) showed it to be most closely related to M. purpureochromogenes DSM 43821(T) (98.0 % sequence similarity), and that of strain NEAU-JC6(T) to M. haikouensis DSM 45626(T) (99.0 %) and M. carbonacea JCM 3139(T) (98.0 %). A combination of DNA-DNA hybridization results and cultural and physiological properties indicated that the two strains can be distinguished from their closest phylogenetic relatives. Thus, strains NEAU-CX1(T) and NEAU-JC6(T) represent two novel species of the genus Micromonospora, for which the names Micromonospora palomenae sp. nov. and Micromonospora harpali sp. nov. are proposed. The type strains are NEAU-CX1(T) (=CGMCC 4.7175(T) = JCM 30056(T)) and NEAU-JC6(T) (=CGMCC 4.7173(T) = JCM 30055(T)).

Halophilic and halotolerant actinomycetes from a marine saltern of Goa, India producing anti-bacterial metabolites

Marine salterns are estuarine ecosystems in Goa, receiving inputs from riverine and marine waters. The Salinity fluctuates between 0 and 300 psu which makes it a conducive niche for salt tolerant and salt loving Actinomycetales. Halotolerant and halophilic Actinomycetales producing anti-bacterial metabolites were studied from crystallizer pond sediments of Ribandar saltern, Goa. Three media viz. Starch casein, R2A and Inorganic salt starch agar at four different salinities (35, 50, 75 and 100 psu) were used for isolation. R2A agar at 35 psu was the most preferred by hypersaline actinomycetes. The dominant group was halotolerant Streptomyces spp. others being rare actinomycetes viz. Nocardiopsis, Micromonospora and Kocuria spp. More than 50% of the isolates showed anti-bacterial activity against one or more of the fifteen human pathogens tested. Eight strains from 4 genera showed consistent anti-bacterial activity and studied in detail. Most halotolerant isolates grew from 0 to 75 psu, with optimum antibiotic production at 35 psu whereas halophiles grew at 20 to 100 psu with optimum antibiotic production at 35 psu. Four Streptomyces strains showed multiple inhibition against test organisms while four rare actinomycetes were specific in their inhibitory activity. This is the first report of a halophilic Kocuria sp., Nocardiopsis sp., and halotolerant Micromonospora sp. producing anti-bacterial compound(s) against Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus citreus, and Vibrio cholerae, respectively. Sequential extraction with varying polarity of organic solvents showed that the extracts inhibited different test pathogens. These results suggest that halophilic and halotolerant actinomycetes from marine salterns are a potential source of anti-bacterial compounds.

Micromonospora sediminicola sp. nov., isolated from marine sediment

An actinomycete strain, designated strain SH2-13(T), was isolated from a marine sediment sample collected from the Andaman Sea of Thailand. Applying a polyphasic approach, the isolate was identified as a member of the genus Micromonospora using morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics, including the presence of meso-diaminopimelic acid in the peptidoglycan. Whole-cell sugars were arabinose, galactose, glucose, rhamnose, ribose and xylose. Diagnostic polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol mannosides and phosphoglycolipids. The major menaquinones were MK-10(H(2)), MK-10(H(4)) and MK-10(H(6)). 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed similarity to Micromonospora marina JSM1-1(T) (99.1 %), Micromonospora coxensis 2-30-b(28)(T) (99.1 %), Micromonospora aurantiaca DSM 43813(T) (98.8 %) and Micromonospora chalcea DSM 43026(T) (98.7 %). However, a combination of DNA-DNA hybridization results and phenotypic properties indicated that strain SH2-13(T) ( = NBRC 107934(T) = BCC 45601(T)) should be classified as the type strain of a novel species, with the proposed name Micromonospora sediminicola sp. nov.

Micromonospora yangpuensis sp. nov., isolated from a sponge

An actinomycete, strain FXJ6.011T, was isolated from a cup-shaped sponge collected at Dachan reef, Yangpu in the South China Sea. The strain had morphological characteristics of members of the family Micromonosporaceae. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain FXJ6.011T indicated the highest similarity (98.7 %) to Micromonospora auratinigra JCM 12357T, Micromonospora chaiyaphumensis JCM 12873T and Micromonospora echinofusca JCM 3327T. Analysis of the gyrB gene sequence also showed that strain FXJ6.011T should be assigned to the genus Micromonospora. It contained dd-diaminopimelic acid as the major cell-wall diamino acid and MK-10(H2) as predominant menaquinone. The polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidyl mannosides and phosphatidylinositol dimannoside. The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, C17 : 1ω8c and C16 : 0. Physiological and biochemical data and low DNA–DNA relatedness values enabled the strain to be differentiated from members of closely related species. Based on phenotypic and genotypic data, strain FXJ6.011T represents a novel Micromonospora species, for which the name Micromonospora yangpuensis sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is FXJ6.011T ( = CGMCC 4.5736T = NBRC 107727T).

Micromonospora humi sp. nov., isolated from peat swamp forest soil

A novel actinomycete, strain P0402T, was isolated from peat swamp forest soil collected in Thailand. Its taxonomic position was determined by using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. The chemotaxonomic characteristics of this strain matched those of the genus Micromonospora, i.e. the presence of meso-diaminopimelic acid and N-glycolyl muramic acid in the peptidoglycan, whole-cell sugar pattern D, phospholipid type II, and cellular fatty acid type 3b. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed a close relationship between strain P0402T and Micromonospora coxensis JCM 13248T (99.0 % similarity), Micromonospora eburnea JCM 12345T (99.0 %), Micromonospora marina JCM 12870T (98.9 %), Micromonospora halophytica JCM 3125T (98.7 %), Micromonospora chalcea JCM 3031T (98.7 %), Micromonospora purpureochromogenes JCM 3156T (98.6 %) and Micromonospora aurantiaca JCM 10878T (98.5 %). It could be clearly distinguished from these type strains based on low levels of DNA–DNA relatedness and phenotypic differences. On the basis of the data presented, strain P0402T is suggested to represent a novel species of the genus Micromonospora, for which the name Micromonospora humi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is P0402T ( = JCM 15292T  = PCU 315T  = TISTR 1883T).

Micromonospora rhizosphaerae sp. nov., isolated from mangrove rhizosphere soil

Strain 211018T was isolated from mangrove Excocaria agallocha rhizosphere soil. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed the highest similarity to the type strains of Micromonospora olivasterospora DSM 43868T (98.6 %) and Micromonospora pattaloongensis TJ2-2T (98.4 %). gyrB gene sequence analysis also indicated that strain 211018T should be assigned to the genus Micromonospora. The characteristic whole-cell sugars are xylose, mannose and arabinose. The predominant menaquinone is MK-9(H4) and the major fatty acids are iso-C15 : 0 (27.5 %), 10-methyl C17 : 0 (14.2 %), C17 : 1 ω8c (12.8 %), iso-C16 : 0 (12.6 %), anteiso-C15 : 0 (6.1 %), iso-C17 : 0 (4.1 %) and anteiso-C17 : 0 (4.0 %). The phospholipid profile comprises phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylinositol mannosides. The DNA G+C content is 70.8 mol%. The chemotaxonomic data of the strain coincided with those of the genus Micromonospora. Furthermore, a combination of DNA–DNA hybridization results and some physiological and biochemical properties indicated that the novel strain could be readily distinguished from the closest phylogenetic relatives. On the basis of these phenotypic and genotypic data, strain 211018T represents a novel species of the genus Micromonospora, for which the name Micromonospora rhizosphaerae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 211018T (=CGMCC 4.5599T =DSM 45431T).

Allocatelliglobosispora scoriae gen. nov., sp. nov., isolated from volcanic ash

A novel actinomycete, designated strain Sco-B14T, was isolated from volcanic ash collected near Darangshi Oreum (a parasitic or satellite volcano) in Jeju, Republic of Korea. The organism formed well-developed, branched substrate mycelium, on which short chains of non-motile spores were arranged singly or in clusters. Aerial mycelium was not produced. Globose bodies were observed. The reverse colour of colonies was light brown to brown. Diffusible pigments were produced on ISP medium 3 and oatmeal-nitrate agar. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain Sco-B14T formed a lineage within the family Micromonosporaceae and was distinct from established genera. The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of strain Sco-B14T to members of related genera of the family was 95.0–95.7 % to type strains of Catellatospora species, 94.7 % to Hamadaea tsunoensis IMSNU 22005T, 94.7 % to Longispora albida K97-0003T and 94.0 % to Catelliglobosispora koreensis LM 042T. 3-Hydroxydiaminopimelic acid was the diagnostic diamino acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan. Whole-cell sugars were glucose, rhamnose, ribose, xylose, arabinose, galactose and mannose. The polar lipids included diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylinositol. The menaquinone profile contained MK-10(H4) (49 %), MK-9(H4) (24 %), MK-10(H6) (18 %) and MK-9(H6) (9 %). The predominant fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 and C17 : 0. The DNA G+C content was 70.1 mol%. The combination of chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data clearly separated the isolate from the type strains of all genera in the family Micromonosporaceae. On the basis of the phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic data presented in this paper, strain Sco-B14T is considered to represent a novel species of a new genus in the family Micromonosporaceae, for which the name Allocatelliglobosispora scoriae gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Allocatelliglobosispora scoriae is Sco-B14T (=KCTC 19661T =DSM 45362T).

Micromonospora marina sp. nov., isolated from sea sand

Two actinomycete strains, JSM1-1(T) and JSM1-3, were isolated from sea sand collected in Thailand. Their taxonomic position was determined using a polyphasic approach. The chemotaxonomic characteristics of these strains coincided with those of the genus Micromonospora, i.e. the presence of meso-diaminopimelic acid and N-glycolyl muramic acid in the peptidoglycan, whole cell sugar pattern D, phospholipids type II, and cellular fatty acid type 3b. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed a close relationship between strains JSM1-1(T) and JSM1-3 (99.8 %), and between JSM1-1(T) and Micromonospora aurantiaca JCM 10878(T) (99.3 %), Micromonospora chalcea JCM 3031(T) (99.0 %), and Micromonospora coxensis JCM 13248 (T) (99.0 %). However, strains JSM1-1(T) and JSM1-3 could be clearly distinguished from these type strains by a low DNA-DNA relatedness and by phenotypic differences. On the basis of the data presented, a new species, Micromonospora marina sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is JSM1-1(T) (=JCM 12870(T) =PCU 269(T) =TISTR 1566(T)).

Pseudosporangium ferrugineum gen. nov., sp. nov., a new member of the family Micromonosporaceae

An actinomycete strain 3-44-a(19)(T) was isolated from sandy soil collected in Bangladesh. The strain formed irregular pseudosporangia directly from aggregated spore chains above the rudimentary aerial mycelium. The pseudosporangia developed singly. Each pseudosporangium contained many small, non-motile, spherical, smooth-surfaced spores in chains. Strain 3-44-a(19)(T) contained meso- and 3-hydroxydiaminopimelic acid in the cell wall and MK-9(H(6)) as the major menaquinone and arabinose, galactose, glucose, mannose, ribose and xylose were present in the whole-cell hydrolysate. The diagnostic phospholipid was phosphatidylethanolamine and iso-C(15 : 0) (24.6 %), C(18 : 1)omega9c (15.5 %), C(16 : 0) (10.6 %), C(18 : 0) (9.4 %), iso-C(16 : 0) (8.6 %) and anteiso-C(15 : 0) (6.0 %) were detected as the major cellular fatty acids. The acyl type of the peptidoglycan was glycolyl and mycolic acids were not detected. The G+C content of the DNA was 73.6 mol%. The chemotaxonomic data indicated that the strain belonged to the family Micromonosporaceae. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence data also suggested that strain 3-44-a(19)(T) fell within the family Micromonosporaceae. On the basis of phylogenetic analysis and characteristic patterns of 16S rRNA gene signature nucleotides as well as morphological and chemotaxonomic data, this strain should be classified as a member of a new genus and species, Pseudosporangium ferrugineum gen. nov., sp. nov., in the family Micromonosporaceae. The type strain of Pseudosporangium ferrugineum is 3-44-a(19)(T) (=JCM 14710(T) =MTCC9007(T)).

Micromonospora lupini sp. nov. and Micromonospora saelicesensis sp. nov., isolated from root nodules of Lupinus angustifolius

A study was conducted to determine the taxonomic status of six actinomycete strains isolated from root nodules of Lupinus angustifolius. The strains were filamentous, Gram-positive and produced single spores at the tip of the hyphae. Phylogenetic, chemotaxonomic and morphological analyses demonstrated that all six strains belonged to the genus Micromonospora. According to the 16S rRNA gene sequence data, the strains were divided into two clusters that are moderately related to Micromonospora mirobrigensis, Micromonospora matsumotoense and Micromonospora purpureochromogenes. Fatty acid patterns also supported the division of the strains, and significant differences between the two groups were found in the amounts of iso-15 : 0, iso-16 : 0, iso-16 : 1 and iso-17 : 0. Furthermore, the two groups showed physiological differences which included utilization of arabinose, trehalose, alanine and sucrose and xylan hydrolysis. Finally, DNA–DNA hybridization and ribotyping studies confirmed that each group represents a novel species. Based on the genotypic and phenotypic data, the novel species Micromonospora lupini sp. nov. (type strain Lupac 14NT =DSM 44874T =LMG 24055T) and Micromonospora saelicesensis sp. nov. (type strain Lupac 09T =DSM 44871T =LMG 24056T) are proposed.

List of new names and new combinations previously effectively, but not validly, published

The purpose of this announcement is to effect the valid publication of the following new names and new combinations under the procedure described in the Bacteriological Code (1990 Revision). Authors and other individuals wishing to have new names and/or combinations included in future lists should send three copies of the pertinent reprint or photocopies thereof, or an electronic copy of the published paper, to the IJSEM Editorial Office for confirmation that all of the other requirements for valid publication have been met. It is also a requirement of IJSEM and the ICSP that authors of new species, new subspecies and new combinations provide evidence that types are deposited in two recognized culture collections in two different countries (i.e. documents certifying deposition and availability of type strains). It should be noted that the date of valid publication of these new names and combinations is the date of publication of this list, not the date of the original publication of the names and combinations. The authors of the new names and combinations are as given below, and these authors' names will be included in the author index of the present issue and in the volume author index. Inclusion of a name on these lists validates the publication of the name and thereby makes it available in bacteriological nomenclature. The inclusion of a name on this list is not to be construed as taxonomic acceptance of the taxon to which the name is applied. Indeed, some of these names may, in time, be shown to be synonyms, or the organisms may be transferred to another genus, thus necessitating the creation of a new combination.
