Abstract
Objective To evaluate the enamel bonding ability and orthodontic adhesive resin degree of conversion using the experimental bracket design. Material and Methods. Thirteen bovine teeth were used in the study. The experimental bracket was modified with a translucent region in the center of its body. After enamel etching, Orthocem orthodontic adhesive (FGM, Joinville, Brazil) was applied on the bracket base for bonding. The groups were divided as follows (n = 10 per group): (1) control (CB) with standard brackets and (2) spot bracket (SB) with experimental brackets featuring a 0.8 mm translucent region at the center using carbide bur. Shear bond strength (SBS) was evaluated after 24 hours in a universal testing machine and adhesive remnant index (ARI). The degree of conversion (DC) was analyzed using Raman spectroscopy (n = 3 per group). Data were then analyzed using Student's t-test and Mann-Whitney statistical methods. Results The SB group exhibited a higher mean SBS (10.33 MPa) compared to the CB Group (8.77 MPa). However, there was no statistical difference between the groups (p = 0.376). Both SB and CB groups had a mean ARI score of 1. Raman analysis revealed a higher degree of conversion in the SB group (49.3%) compared to the CB group (25.9%). Conclusions The experimental support showed a higher degree of adhesive conversion, although there was no significant increase in bond strength.

Abstract
This in vitro study aimed to verify the influence of chlorhexidine (CHX) (gel and solution) in association with different activation protocols on disinfection of root canals contaminated with Enterococcus faecalis. In total, 120 lower premolar roots were selected, contaminated and divided into 12 groups according to irrigation technique and substance. Samples were collected before and after each irrigation technique and analysed for colony-forming units (CFU). Three dentin discs were obtained for quantification of viable intratubular cells by using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). CFU results showed that sonic and ultrasonic were more effective than conventional irrigation. Ultrasonic activation was more effective than sonic for CHX gel (p < 0.05). CLSM showed that either activation was better than conventional in all groups and root canal thirds (p < 0.05). It was concluded that ultrasonic/sonic activation was more effective than conventional techniques and CHX enhanced intratubular dentin decontamination across all irrigation methods.

Abstract
This study aims to investigate whether toothbrushes with fluoride-infused bristles have any (re)mineralisation effects on bovine enamel. Bovine incisors (N = 160) were extracted, and the buccal side of the crown was cut into dimensions of ~5 mm × 5 mm with a low-speed saw. These specimens were randomly allocated into four groups: half (80 teeth) were stored in demineralising solution (DM), and the other half were stored in deionised water (DW) for 96 h. Then, they were brushed with a force of 2.0 ± 0.1 N for five min with a manual toothbrush with either fluoride-infused (TF) or regular (TR) bristles. Microhardness (Vickers), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to investigate the surfaces of the bovine enamel specimens before and after brushing. Two-way ANOVA was used to analyse the hardness data, and the pairwise comparison method was used to analyse the Ca/P ratio, for each group at α = 0.05. The results show that brushing with either of these toothbrushes increased the Vickers microhardness on DM and DW enamel (p < 0.001), whereas hydroxyapatite was revealed in all groups by XRD. The DM samples showed a significant increase (p < 0.05) in the Ca/P ratios after brushing with TR and TF. Conversely, under DW conditions, these ratios decreased significantly after brushing. In terms of the F atomic%, TF increased significantly. SEM revealed mineral deposition in the DM groups after toothbrushing. To conclude, toothbrushing effectively induces the microhardness of sound and demineralised enamel, while fluoride-infused bristles might be able to retain fluoride on the enamel surface.

Abstract
Resin infiltration is an effective method to mask vestibular white spots. If needed, external bleaching is usually recommended before infiltration, whilst in clinical practice, this sequence may not always be feasible. This in vitro study evaluated the effect of bleaching after resin infiltration regarding surface roughness and color using bovine incisors. Unlike for the untreated specimens (control, n = 25), artificial caries lesions were created within the test group (n = 25) using a demineralization solution at 37 °C for five days (pH = 4.95). The lesions were subsequently infiltrated using a resin infiltrant (Icon, DMG, Hamburg, Germany), followed by polishing. Afterwards, all specimens were bleached with a 10% carbamide peroxide gel (Opalescence, Ultradent, South Jordan, UT, USA) for 8 h/day over a ten-day period. Between bleaching treatments, specimens were stored in an opaque container with moistened paper tissues at 37 °C. Surface roughness was measured using a profilometer, and color in the L*a*b* space was assessed spectrophotometrically before and after bleaching. Bleaching increased the L*-values of both infiltrated (mean ± SD; ΔL* = 3.52 ± 1.98) and untreated (control) specimens (ΔL* = 3.53 ± 2.30) without any significant difference between the groups (p = 0.983). Bleaching also induced a significant increase in the mean surface roughness of both infiltrated (p < 0.001) and untreated (p = 0.0134) teeth. In terms of clinical relevance; it can be concluded that bleaching resin-infiltrated enamel is as effective as bleaching sound enamel.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study investigated the impact of the remaining coronal tooth structure on the mechanical behavior of nonpost (NP) full crowns on endodontically treated maxillary central incisors. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty bovine incisors with NP and 2-mm of ferrule were divided into four groups based on the remaining structure: complete 2-mm ferrule (NP-2), absence of mesial and distal ferrule effect (NP-BL), absence of buccal and lingual ferrule effect (NP-MD), and no ferrule (NP-0). The specimens underwent a stepwise stress fatigue test until fracture occurred, and stress distribution was analyzed using in silico finite element analysis (FEA). Additionally, groups with endodontic posts (P) were simulated in the FEA. RESULTS The results showed that the survival rates varied among the different groups under oblique loading. The NP-2 group exhibited the highest survival rate, with all samples enduring loads up to 200 N and some surviving up to 520 N. The NP-MD and NP-BL groups had lower survival rates, while the NP-0 group had the poorest survival rate. The predominant failure mode was a nonrepairable root fracture. FEA results indicated no significant difference between groups with and without posts. NP intraradicular restorations on nonweakened roots with a minimum height of 2mm and partial or total ferrule thickness of 1mm offer a promising treatment option. CONCLUSION A complete 2-mm ferrule was found to be the most favorable configuration for NP full crowns. However, maintaining the remaining tissue is crucial, as both combinations with preserved ferrule effect exhibited superior behavior in terms of fatigue and fracture load compared to the group with no ferrule. These findings contribute to understanding the mechanical considerations for NP full crowns and provide insights into treatment planning and design choices in restorative dentistry.

Abstract
Objectives This study evaluated the impact of different methods of irrigant agitation on smear layer removal in the apical third of curved mesial canals of 3 dimensionally (D) printed mandibular molars. Materials and Methods Sixty 3D-printed mandibular second molars were used, presenting a 70° curvature and a Vertucci type II configuration in the mesial root. A round cavity was cut 2 mm from the apex using a trephine of 2 mm in diameter, 60 bovine dentin disks were made, and a smear layer was formed. The dentin disks had the adaptation checked in the apical third of the teeth with wax. The dentin disks were evaluated in environmental scanning electron microscope before and after the following irrigant agitation methods: G1(PIK Ultrasonic Tip), G2 (Passive Ultrasonic Irrigation with Irrisonic- PUI), G3 (Easy Clean), G4 (HBW Ultrasonic Tip), G5 (Ultramint X Ultrasonic tip), and G6 (conventional irrigation-CI) (n = 10). All groups were irrigated with 2.5% sodium hypochlorite and 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. Results All dentin disks were 100% covered by the smear layer before treatment, and all groups significantly reduced the percentage of the smear layer after treatment. After the irrigation protocols, the Ultra-X group showed the lowest coverage percentage, statistically differing from the conventional, PIK, and HBW groups (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference among Ultramint X, PUI-Irrisonic, and Easy Clean (p > 0.05). None of the agitation methods could remove the smear layer altogether. Conclusions Ultramint X resulted in the most significant number of completely clean specimens.

Abstract
This study aimed to observe and compare the resin luting cement (RLC)/dentin interfaces of different types of RLC systems with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This study evaluated six self-adhesive resin luting cement systems (SARLCs), four systems combining a SARLC with a tooth primer (SARLCPs), and six conventional resin luting cement systems (CVRLCs). Cured resin composite rods were bonded to bovine dentin using RLCs in different etching modes. The morphological features at the interfaces were observed using SEM. Although all RLCs in etch-&-rinse (ER) mode showed a clear hybrid layer, most SARLCs had a thinner and more porous hybrid layer than the SARLCPs and CVRLCs. All SARLCPs with primer and CVRLCs showed a thin high-density layer below the primer layer in both etching modes. CVRLCs and SARLCPs with primer treatment systems may be more versatile and reliable when compared to simplified RLC systems.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of ions released from surface pre-reacted glass-ionomer (S-PRG) filler on collagen morphology, remineralization, and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of demineralized dentin. MATERIALS AND METHODS Bovine incisor root dentins were demineralized with EDTA and divided into three treatment groups: 1) water (control); 2) S-PRG filler eluate; 3) 125 ppm sodium fluoride (NaF). After a 3-min treatment, the specimens were stored in simulated body fluid (SBF) for 3 months. Collagen morphology and remineralization were assessed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Additionally, ultimate tensile strength (UTS) was measured. RESULTS TEM and SEM demonstrated that S-PRG induced more effective remineralization compared to NaF, while the control group exhibited faint mineral deposition with collagen degradation. S-PRG displayed the most homogenous mineral deposition in collagen fibrils, along with closure of interfibrillar spaces. Extensive mineral precipitation was observed within dentinal tubules in the S-PRG group. In addition, S-PRG filler eluate demonstrated significantly higher phosphate-to-amide ratio and UTS compared to NaF and control groups (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Ion released from S-PRG filler positively influenced collagen morphology, remineralization, and ultimate tensile strength of demineralized dentin. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE S-PRG filler enhances remineralization and improve the biomechanics of demineralized dentin.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The success of endodontic treatment depends on the significant disinfection of the root canal system, its irregularities, and dentinal tubules. However, achieving complete disinfection remains challenging, with frequent failures and occurrence of secondary infections. Here, we propose using iontophoresis to increase the penetration and distribution of disinfecting agents into root canals, using methylene blue for proof-of-concept. METHODS The marker was applied in bovine root canals, and the radial distribution of the dye in the dentinal tubules was evaluated by optical microscopy. Iontophoresis was applied at 0.5 and 1.5 mA for 5 and 15 min. RESULTS A significant statistical difference (p < 0.05) was observed in the marker penetration between passive and iontophoretic applications. Both current density and application time had an important effect on methylene blue distribution, with a greater efficacy delivery to the apical region achieved after 1.5 mA for 5 min or 0.5 mA for 15 min, showing longer application time can compensate for lower application current. CONCLUSION Iontophoresis increases the penetration and distribution of methylene blue into bovine root canals and dentinal tubules, including its innermost portions. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Iontophoresis has shown to be a promising technique for root canal and dentinal tubule disinfection.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Coffee is one of the most popular beverages in the world, with millions of people consuming it every day. The effect of coffee on teeth discoloration has long been a concern for both coffee drinkers and dental professionals. To address this concern, this study aimed to investigate the role of chlorogenic acids (CGAs) and the type of coffee in coffee-induced teeth discoloration. MATERIALS AND METHODS High-performance liquid chromatography with a photodiode array detector was used to determine the CGA contents of instant coffee produced by five manufacturers (Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts, Kanu, Ediya, Coffee Bean). A total of 180 bovine tooth specimens were immersed in the coffee samples for varying durations (3, 9, 24, 48, and 72 h), and the discoloration levels were measured using a spectrophotometer. A linear mixed-effects model analysis was used to determine the significance of L*, a*, and b* values in relation to the duration of coffee immersion and coffee type. RESULTS Both immersion time and coffee type had significant effects on tooth discoloration (p < 0.001), with some types of coffee being more strongly associated with tooth discoloration than others. The amount of CGAs present in coffee was found to be positively correlated with the degree of discoloration (p = 0.030). CONCLUSIONS Prolonged exposure to coffee can exacerbate teeth staining, and different types of coffee can cause varying degrees of discoloration. Furthermore, coffee with higher levels of CGAs may lead to greater tooth discoloration.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This in vitro study assessed the potential of tooth discoloration by aerosols generated from three heated tobacco products (HTPs) with different specifications: in-direct heating tobacco system platform 1.0a (IT1.0a), in-direct heating tobacco system platform 2.0a (IT2.0a), and direct heating tobacco system platform 3.0a (DT3.0a). In addition, three flavor types (regular, menthol, and berry menthol) were selected for each HTP to characterize the effect of flavor types on tooth discoloration. MATERIAL AND METHODS Six bovine tooth samples were exposed directly to aerosols generated from one pack of each HTP: 350 puffs for IT1.0a, 325 puffs for IT2.0a, and 220 puffs for DT3.0a. Six bovine tooth samples were also exposed to air (350 puffs) and smoke generated from one pack of cigarettes (160 puffs) as negative and positive controls, respectively. The color of each tooth sample was measured before and after exposure. The overall color changes were assessed using overall color differences (ΔE) calculated according to the Commission International de I'Eclairage color system. A one-way analysis of variance followed by Tukey's post hoc test was used to compare ΔE among bovine tooth samples exposed to air, cigarette smoke, and aerosols generated from each HTP. RESULTS ΔE values for tooth samples exposed to air and aerosols generated from the three HTPs (IT1.0a, IT2.0a, and DT3.0a) were significantly lower than ΔE value for tooth samples exposed to cigarette smoke. ΔE values obtained with DT3.0a were significantly higher than those obtained with air-exposed control samples. However, ΔE values obtained with IT1.0a and IT2.0a were not significantly different from that obtained with air-exposed control samples. No HTPs showed significant differences in ΔE values among the three flavor types. CONCLUSIONS This study showed that HTP aerosols reduce tooth discoloration potential compared with cigarette smoke, regardless of flavor types, and the tooth discoloration potential of the product may depend on product specifications.

Abstract
The management of root caries remains a challenge for clinicians due to its unique anatomical location and structure. There is increasing interest in utilising artificial root caries lesions to develop new strategies for remineralisation. An ideal protocol has not yet been agreed upon. The aim of this review is to provide a structured overview of previously reported in vitro root caries models. The literature was screened and mined for information mainly on substrate selection, model systems utilised, and variables used in the models. Human roots (60%) were the most frequently used substrates, followed by bovine roots (40%). Chemical models (69%) were the most frequently utilised model systems, followed by microbiological models (27%), to form root caries lesions. Acetate buffer solution (80%), pH 5.0 or above (40%), and a demineralisation time of five days (25%) were the common variables used in the chemical systems, while mono-species biofilm was most frequently used (73%) in microbiological models and Streptococcus mutans was the most common bacterial strain utilised in these models (80%). This review highlights the variability amongst the experimental approaches, discusses the advantages and limitations of these approaches, and emphasises that standardisation of experimental conditions along with sustained research will benefit root caries research.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to evaluate the fracture resistance and stress magnitude of occlusal veneers made of conventional or flowable resin composites at different minimal thicknesses bonded on enamel or dentin. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 120 sound bovine incisors were flattened and used as substrates (enamel or dentin) for the restorations. The teeth were embedded into polymethyl methacrylate and allocated into 4 groups according to the resin composite (Clearfil AP-X PLT and Clearfil Majesty Flow, Kuraray Dental) and substrate. Further, the substrates were randomly subdivided in 12 groups (N = 120, n = 10) according to the occlusal veneer minimal thickness: 0.5, 1.0, or 2.0 mm. The teeth were directly restored with a standardised procedure. Then, the specimens were loaded until fracture in a universal testing machine (Instron 6022, Instron Corp.). A 3-way and a 1-way analysis of variance were used to determine significant differences for each factor. Three-dimensional finite element analysis was carried out following the in vitro boundary conditions to assess the stress magnitude in the restoration during compressive loading. RESULTS The fracture loads were recorded into initial load to failure (ILF) and fatal load to failure (FLF). Differences were found in material for ILF and FLF, leading to an overall equal good performance in fracture load and stress distribution for both materials, regardless of the substrate. Differences in thickness were apparent in both ILF and FLF. CONCLUSIONS Direct conventional and flow resin composite occlusal veneers present a promising mechanical behaviour when bonded on enamel or dentin. However, caution is advised when preparing 0.5-mm minimal thickness restorations.

Abstract
Objectives Identify the histological characteristics of bovine dentin using histological technique by decalcification with Masson's Trichrome staining. Materials and Methods This was an observational and descriptive study using units of analysis. Bovine teeth were used, which were subjected to a decalcification technique and Masson's trichrome staining. Microscopic observation and registration of the structures was carried out. Results In the microscopic observation of the teeth subjected to decalcification, dentin, predentin and the structural organization of the tubular and peritubular dentin were observed. The odontoblasts arranged in a palisade with the odontoblastic process included within the dentinal tubule and the periprocedural space. The presence of interglobular dentin is not observed in areas of coronary dentin. The histomorphological pattern corresponding to dentin-predentin-pulp is arranged in a similar way to human teeth. Conclusions Bovine dentin constitutes an ideal substrate for in vitro research work with dental biomaterials, since it presents histological characteristics similar to bovine teeth; the absence of interglobular dentin would not represent a significant difference according to what was observed in this study.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To review the literature on recurrent caries models used to evaluate restorative materials, compare reported methodology and parameters, and devise specific recommendations to be considered in future investigations. DATA The following were extracted: study design, sample characteristics, source of teeth, name of restorations compared including controls, recurrent caries model type, type of demineralizing and remineralizing solutions, type of biofilm used, methods to detect recurrent caries. SOURCES Literature searches were performed in OVID Medline, EMBASE, SCOPUS, and Cochrane Library. STUDY SELECTION For a study to be included, it had to examine dental materials for tooth restoration purposes only with a valid control group and evaluate restorative dental materials regardless of the form of the teeth caries model used or nature of the tooth structure used. A total of 91 studies were included. Most of the studies presented were in vitro. Human teeth were the main source of specimens utilized. Around 88% of the studies used specimens without an artificial gap, and 44% used a chemical model. S. mutans was the main bacterial species used in microbial caries models. CONCLUSION The findings of this review provided an insight into the performance of available dental materials assessed using different recurrent caries models, yet this review cannot be used as a guideline for material selection. Selecting the appropriate restorative material relies on several patient-related factors such as microbiota, occlusion, and diet that are not comprehensively taken into consideration in recurrent caries models and thus hinder reliable comparison. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Due to the heterogenicity of variables among studies on the performance of dental restorative materials, this scoping review aimed to provide insights for dental researchers concerning the available recurrent caries models, testing methods used, and aspects of comparison between these materials including their characteristics and limitations.

Abstract
In-office bleaching with high concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) agents causes undesirable alterations in the enamel. Surface pre-reacted glass-ionomer (S-PRG) filler is a functional material known for its acid-neutralizing and demineralization-inhibition properties. This study evaluates the effect of S-PRG filler incorporation in H2O2-based bleaching on the enamel surface. Bovine enamel surfaces were bleached using a bleaching paste formulated with a liquid (35% H2O2) and a powder containing 5% or 10% S-PRG filler. The surface roughness and the Vickers microhardness of the treated enamel surfaces were evaluated. The enamel surfaces were observed under a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and analyzed using energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) technology. The surfaces were challenged by citric acid and observed by SEM. The specimens bleached with the paste containing the S-PRG filler showed lower enamel surface roughness and higher microhardness values than did those bleached with the plain paste (0% S-PRG filler); meanwhile, there were no significant differences between the 5% or 10% S-PRG filler groups. The S-PRG filler groups showed enamel surface morphologies similar to those of the non-bleached enamel, according to SEM observation, and EDX analysis detected the presence of fluoride and strontium ions. The S-PRG filler groups showed a higher resistance to erosion. The S-PRG filler mitigated the detrimental effects of bleaching agents on the enamel surface and provided resistance to erosion.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Development of white spot lesions (WSLs) is common among orthodontic patients. Several measures have been introduced to prevent and remineralize the lesions. Casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) is used for both prevention and remineralization. The effect of its application before bonding is controversial. This systematic review was conducted to investigate the most up to date available literature regarding the effect of CPP-ACP enamel pre-treatment on shear bond strength (SBS) of metallic orthodontic brackets. METHODS A search was conducted in electronic databases (MEDLINE (via PubMed), Scopus, Cochrane Library, Web of Science and Google scholar (grey literature)) up to March 29th, 2023. The inclusion criteria included in vitro studies comparing the SBS of metal orthodontic brackets following pre-treatment of enamel using CPP-ACP versus control. The exclusion criteria included study types other than in vitro studies, studies conducted on non-human enamel, or studies using CPP-ACP in combination with another intervention. The included studies were analysed by two reviewers, independently. The risk of bias assessment was done using a modified risk of bias tool. A Meta-analysis was performed. I2 values and Q-test were used for assessment of heterogeneity. Results were displayed in forest plots with a random-effects model. Standardized mean difference, standard error (SE) and 95% confidence intervals were calculated for all studies. RESULTS The search resulted in 76 articles. After duplicate removal and assessment for eligibility, 15 studies were included in the review. High statistical heterogeneity was found among the included studies using I2 values and Q-Test (I2 = 95.147%; Q = 288.456; df = 14; P < 0.001). The overall effect of CPP-ACP pre-treatment on the SBS of metal orthodontic brackets was not significant (Mean difference = 1.163 MPa, SE = 0.757, 95% CI = -0.321, 2.648, p value = 0.125). The use of CPP-ACP for prevention of WSLs did not significantly affect the SBS of brackets (Standardized mean difference = 1.009, SE = 0.884, 95% CI = -0.723, 2.740, p value = 0.254). No significant change was found when CPP-ACP was used for remineralization of WSLs (Standardized mean difference = 1.501, SE = 1.087, 95% CI = -0.630, 3.632, p value = 0.167). CONCLUSIONS Within the limitations of the study, the evidence suggests that the use of CPP-ACP for either prevention or remineralization of WSLs before bonding does not affect the SBS of metal orthodontic brackets.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of fluoride-containing whitening products on sound enamel and on artificial caries lesions during a cariogenic challenge. MATERIALS AND METHODS Bovine enamel specimens (n = 120) with three areas [non-treated sound enamel (NSE), treated sound enamel (TSE), and treated artificial caries lesion (TACL)] were randomly assigned to the four groups: whitening mouthrinse (WM: 2.5% hydrogen peroxide-100 ppm F-), placebo mouthrinse (PM: 0% hydrogen peroxide-100 ppm F-), whitening gel (WG: 10% carbamide peroxide-1130 ppm F-), and deionized water (negative control; NC). The treatments (2 min for WM, PM, and NC, and 2 h for WG) were carried out during a 28-day pH-cycling model (6 × 60 min demineralization/day). Relative surface reflection intensity (rSRI) and transversal microradiography (TMR) analyses were performed. Fluoride uptake (surface and subsurface) was measured in additional enamel specimens. RESULTS For TSE, a higher value of rSRI was observed in WM (89.99% ± 6.94), and a greater decrease in rSRI was observed for WG and NC, and no sign of mineral loss was verified for all groups (p > 0.05). For TACL, rSRI significantly decreased after pH-cycling for all experimental groups with no difference between them (p < 0.05). Higher amounts of fluoride were found in WG. WG and WM exhibited intermediate values of mineral loss, similar to PM. CONCLUSIONS The whitening products did not potentialize the enamel demineralization under a severe cariogenic challenge, and they did not exacerbate mineral loss of the artificial caries lesions. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Low concentrated hydrogen peroxide whitening gel and mouthrinse containing fluoride do not intensify the progression of caries lesions.

Abstract
AIM Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is a well-known caries preventive aid capable of arresting carious lesions and preventing secondary caries formation. Despite having the caries prevention potential, the clinical use of SDF is limited due to the tooth discoloration caused by SDF. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of natural antioxidants to inhibit SDF-induced tooth discoloration. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 32 bovine teeth were polished to create a 6 mm circular window on the middle 1/3 (for enamel) or on the cervical 1/3 (for dentin) of the labial surface. Specimens were treated either with SDF alone or SDF followed by ascorbic acid (AA)/alpha lipoic acid (ALA)/7th generation bonding materials. The color parameters Lightness (L*), Chroma (C*), and Hue (H*) of the tooth window were measured at pretreatment, 1-hour, 1-week, and 1-month posttreatment using a digital color chromometer. RESULTS Repeated measure ANOVA showed a significant tooth color alteration at 1-hour posttreatment. The L* and H* values dropped and C* value elevated significantly in 1-hour posttreatment measurement. All experimental groups showed significant tooth color alteration after treatment (p < 0.05) and were unable to reverse the discoloration even after 1-month period except the ALA group which did not show any significant (p > 0.05) color alteration compared with the pretreatment value. CONCLUSIONS Within the limitation of the in vitro model and according to the results of this study, it can be concluded that ALA has the potential to prevent SDF-induced tooth discoloration; however, AA was unable to prevent the discoloration. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE SDF induces discoloration of enamel and dentin can be reversed by applying Alpha lipoic acid immediacy after SDF application.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The development of new bleaching agents with minimum concentration of hydrogen peroxide (HP), without adverse effects, and with bleaching effectiveness, has great clinical relevance. The aim of this study was to evaluate the bleaching efficacy and cytotoxicity of a new niobium-based bleaching gel, compared to already available HP-based gels. MATERIALS AND METHODS For the bleaching efficacy analysis, 40 bovine incisors were randomly divided into 4 groups according to the established bleaching protocol: control, untreated; 35HP, 35% HP bleaching gel; 6HP, 6% HP bleaching gel; NbHP, niobium gel associated with 3% HP gel. The color variation was measured in a spectrophotometer and the values of ΔL, Δa, Δb, and ΔE obtained. For the cell viability assay by MTT, MC3T3 cells were exposed to bleaching gel extracts (1:500, 1:250, 1:125 dilutions; immediately and 24 h). Statistical tests were performed (P < 0.05). RESULTS The color alteration for all bleaching gels was significant compared to control (P < 0.05), but the NbHP gel showed a significant ΔE than other gels, with expressive color alteration at 14 days (P < 0.05). The 35HP showed high cytotoxicity regarding control and the most groups in all periods and extracts analyzed (P < 0.05), while the NbHP showed greater cell viability than control in the immediate period, dilution of the 1:500 and superior to 6HP in the most extracts at 24 h. CONCLUSION The new experimental niobium-based gel has bleaching efficacy similar to that of gels with a high concentration of HP, and it has high cytocompatibility. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The use of this new generation of niobium-based whitening gel associated with a low concentration of hydrogen peroxide represents the possibility of a tooth whitening with lower dentin sensitivity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of the present study was to compare the surface morphology alterations, mineral content, and surface roughness of eroded enamel surface versus eroded enamel surface which was preceded by Bioactive Glass 45S5 (BAG45S5) application in both primary and permanent human dentitions. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifty-two primary teeth and fifty-two permanent teeth were selected. Teeth were randomly divided into 4 groups of twenty-six teeth each. Groups A1 and B1 underwent erosion with 1% citric acid, while groups A2 and B2 were subjected to application of BAG45S5 powder followed by the same erosive conditions as A1 and B1. Measurements were performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and surface profilometry. They were used to examine the surface morphology alterations, mineral content, and surface roughness, respectively. RESULTS SEM of enamel which received BAG45S5 showed smoother surface in primary teeth post erosion. EDX analysis showed that enamel exhibited crucial resistance to mineral loss in the group which received BAG45S5 prior to inducing erosion as compared to the induced erosion-only group. This was significant (p < 0.005) in both human dentitions. Erosion-only groups showed significantly less surface roughness in permanent teeth (p < 0.045). A marked decrease in surface roughness was observed in surfaces receiving BAG45S5, primary teeth (p < 0.001), and permanent teeth (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Bioactive Glass 45S5 proved successful against erosive conditions in both primary and permanent teeth with better performance in the permanent teeth so it can be regarded as a means of prevention. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Bioactive Glass 45S5 powder could be used not only to remove stains but also as a prophylactic preventive measure against the multiple episodes of acidic food and beverage consumption in children.

Abstract
Problem statement Grinding restorations, such as veneers, with rotary instruments, is the conventional removal approach. It may be accompanied by micro-fractures that affect the adjacent healthy dental structures. Differentiation of the veneer from the dental structure, as well as the resin cement, is not a highly selective procedure when rotary instruments are used. Moreover, the rotary instruments may lead to scratches and overheating of the enamel. Patient discomfort is another disadvantage, due to the noise of the drill. Purpose The purpose of this in vitro study was to examine the effectiveness of a 2790 nm Er,Cr:YSGG laser to debond lithium disilicate laminate, utilizing two distinct pulse durations and various exposure times. The shear bond strength, intrapulpal temperature, and adhesive remaining index were evaluated. Methods and materials This study included three groups of 75 extracted permanent mandibular incisors: G1, G2 (laser-treated groups were classified according to the pulse duration) and C (control group). Twenty five samples were regarded for each group. Both test groups were irradiated with a 3 W output power of Er,Cr:YSGG laser, for a variety of time intervals (20 s, 30 s, 40 s, 50 s, and 60 s). Five samples were tested for each time interval. During irradiation, the temperature in the pulp chamber was monitored using a K-type thermocouple connected to a digital multilogger thermometer that was introduced into the prepared sample pulp chamber. Subsequently, the shear bond strength was measured for G1 and G2, in addition to the control group (no irradiation). The adhesive remaining index was examined microscopically. The area was measured and analysed, and then, transformed into scores for comparisons. Finally, One untreated sample and two other samples of the highest power value from laser-treated groups were examined for their surface morphology by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results The debonding protocols were safe relative to the intrapulpal protocol. The temperature rise after an exposure time of 50 s and 60 s was significantly different from an exposure time of 20 s, 30 s, and 40 s, in both groups (p < 0.05). Both G1 and G2 significantly outperformed the control group in shear bond strength. There was no significant difference between G1 and G2 at any of the tested exposure times (p > 0.05). Nevertheless, the 60 s exposure time showed the lowest shear bond strength. Conclusion Regarding intralpulpal temperature, both modes can be safely used to remove laminate veneers. In sum, an exposure time of 50 s and a pulse duration of 60 μs demonstrated superior results for SBS, adhesive remaining index, and temperature values. Clinical implication Lithium disilicate laminate veneers may be removed quickly, safely, and comfortably. Laser-assisted debonding of porcelain laminate veneer is recommended and does not cause any damage to the veneer or enamel surface.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the influence of different ultra-soft toothbrushes on the progression of erosive tooth wear (ETW). METHODS Bovine enamel and dentin specimens (n=10) were submitted to a 5-day erosive-abrasive cycling model (0.3% citric acid for 5min, artificial saliva for 60min, 4x/day). Toothbrushing was carried out 2x/day for 15s, with the different toothbrushes tested (A- Edel White: flexible handle, tapered bristles; B- Oral-B Gengiva Detox: regular handle, criss-cross tapered bristles; C- Colgate Gengiva Therapy: flexible handle, tapered bristles, high tuft density; D- Oral-B Expert Gengiva Sensi: regular handle, round bristles, high tuft density; E- Oral-B Indicator Plus: soft brush, round end bristles (control). Surface loss (SL, in μm) was assessed by optical profilometry. The toothbrush characteristics were evaluated by surgical microscope. Data were statistically analyzed (α=0.05). RESULTS For enamel, toothbrush C showed the highest SL (means±SD: 9.86±1.28) and it did not differ significantly from A (8.60±0.50), both with flexible handle. The lowest SL was observed for the toothbrush Control E (6.76±0.63), which differed significantly from A and C, but not from the other toothbrushes. For dentin, the highest SL was found for toothbrush D (6.97±1.05) and it did not differ significantly from E (6.23±0.71). The lowest SL was observed for B (4.61±0.71) and C (4.85+0.83), without significant differences from A (5.01±1.24). CONCLUSIONS The ultra-soft toothbrushes had different impacts on the progression of ETW on the dental substrates. On enamel, higher ETW values were observed for the flexible handle toothbrushes, while for dentin, round-end bristles (ultra-soft and soft) caused more ETW. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Knowledge about the effect of different ultra-soft toothbrushes on ETW can help clinicians to recommend the most suitable types for their patients, bearing in mind that toothbrushes can impact enamel and dentin differently.

Abstract
Teeth with different chemical compositions can show vastly different physical properties, so knowledge of elemental composition is required to use animal teeth as substitutes for human teeth in research. In vitro, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), improved by calibration standards and Si3N4-window material, enables determining local elemental compositions of inorganic and organic compounds without sample destruction. Six human molars, bovine incisors, murine incisors, and murine molars were analyzed. EDX-field scans and line scans were analyzed for elements Ca, P, O, C, N, F, Na, Mg, Fe, Cl, and S. Furthermore, Ca/P- and Ca/N-Ratios were calculated. The presence of iron in murine incisor enamel was investigated using additional wavelength dispersive X-ray spectroscopy measurements (WDX) near the enamel surface. Bovine and human enamel and dentin revealed close similarities regarding elemental composition. The median (25-75% percentiles) of At%Ca was 21.1 (20.8-21.3) in human enamel, 21.0 (20.7-21.2) in bovine enamel, and in murine enamel, 18.3 (17.85-18.88) for molars and 18.35 (18.00-18.75) for incisors. In dentin, murine teeth revealed a higher At%Ca compared to human and bovine teeth. Significant differences between human and bovine teeth were found for nitrogen in dentin, with a median of 4.5 (3.3-5) At%N for human dentin and 2.7 (2.3-3.2) At%N for bovine dentin. The Ca/P-Ratio was the highest in human and bovine enamel, which did not differ significantly. Enamel from murine molars had a higher Ca/P-Ratio than murine incisors and the highest Ca/P-Ratio in dentin was observed for human teeth and murine molars (1.49). WDX revealed iron in the outer 10 µm of pre- and post-eruptive enamel of murine incisors. Pre- and post-eruptive enamel on murine incisors only differed significantly in At%Ca (p = 0.041) and At%P (p = 0.026) with both At% higher in the pre-eruptive enamel. Murine teeth differ significantly from human and bovine teeth in terms of the elemental composition of enamel and dentin.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Very little data are known about charcoal toothpastes. The aim of this study was to counteract the missing data by determining the relative dentin abrasivity (RDA) and relative enamel abrasivity (REA) values of charcoal toothpastes. METHODS Radioactively charged dentin and enamel samples were randomly divided into groups of eight specimens. Each group was brushed with two of total 12 charcoal toothpaste slurries and with a standard abrasive with a known RDA and REA value. The measured radioactivity in counts per minute within the slurries corresponds to the amount of dentin or enamel abraded. RDA and REA values of the charcoal toothpastes were expressed relative to the known value of the standard slurry. RESULTS The RDA and REA values of the charcoal toothpastes have a broad range of 24-166 and 0-14, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The RDA and REA values do not differ significantly from previously tested commercially available toothpastes. However, the lack of fluoride compounds in many of the investigated charcoal toothpastes can have a less beneficial effect for the consumers. It is very important to educate patients accordingly.

Abstract
This study investigated the enamel and dentin bond durability of a two-step adhesive system, using a universal adhesive-derived primer (G2-Bond Universal [GU]), and compared it with the two conventional, two-step, self-etch adhesive systems (Clearfil SE Bond 2 [CS] and OptiBond XTR [OX]) under thermal cycling (TC) and long-term water storage (WS). The shear bond strengths to bovine enamel and dentin were determined using the etch-and-rinse and self-etch modes. Twelve specimens per test group were prepared and further divided into the following subgroups: 1) subjected to TC, 2) long-term WS, and 3) WS for 24 h (baseline). The enamel and dentin bond durability of GU was superior to those of CS and OX in different etching modes and under different degradation conditions. The latest two-step adhesive system, which utilizes universal adhesives' benefits in its primer, might offer durable clinical bonding performances and can be widely used in a clinical setting.

Abstract
Few long-term studies assess the discoloration induced by hydraulic calcium silicate-based cement on dental structures. In addition, as far as we know, no long-term study has assessed the discoloration induced by these cement on composite resin. This in vitro study aimed to assess, during a period of two years, the discoloration potential of different hydraulic calcium silicate-based cements (hCSCs) on the enamel/dentin structure and composite resin restoration. A total of 40 enamel/dentin discs were obtained from bovine incisors, and 40 composite resin discs (10 mm in diameter × 2 mm thick) were fabricated. A 0.8 mm-deep cavity was made in the center of each disc and filled with the following hCSCs (n=10): Original MTA (Angelus); MTA Repair HP (Angelus); NeoMTA Plus (Avalon); and Biodentine (Septodont). An initial color measurement was performed (T0 - baseline). After 7, 15, 30, 45, 90, 300 days, and two years, new color measurements were performed to determine the color (ΔE00), lightness (ΔL'), chroma (ΔC'), hue differences (ΔH'), and whiteness index (WID). For enamel/dentin, the ΔE00 was significant among groups and periods (p<0.05). NeoMTA Plus had the greatest ΔE00. The NeoMTA Plus group had the greatest ΔE00 after two years for composite resin. Significant reduction in lightness was observed for all groups after two years (p<0.05). The most significant WID values were observed after 30 days for Biodentine (enamel/dentin) and MTA Repair HP groups (composite resin) (p<0.05). The hCSCs changed the colorimetric behavior of both substrates, leading to greater darkening over time. The Bi2O3 in the Original MTA seems relevant in the short periods of color change assessment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study explores the practices of obtaining human teeth for teaching and research in Paraguay. The goal of this research is to understand whether the data supports the need to improve ethical training within dental education, including the creation of a human tooth bank (HTB) METHODS: An observational cross-sectional study was conducted. Three semi-structured questionnaires were developed, one for each target population: dental students, dentists in practice, and the general population. The questionnaires were distributed between February and April 2021, using Google Forms RESULTS: The main places where human teeth were obtained by a student are dental clinics, followed by cemeteries. 94% of students and 91% of dentists paid for teeth on at least one occasion. There is a willingness on the part of students and dentists to donate collections of teeth, and among the general population to donate their teeth if they are extracted, for both teaching and research use. Note that, 31% of students and 6% of the population are aware of what an HTB is, at the same time only 16% of dentists know how it functions CONCLUSION: The number of respondents who obtain teeth from cemeteries and who pay for their acquisition is high. Both of these practices raise ethical concerns. The implementation of informed consent for the donation of extracted teeth is practically nil; although there is a positive attitude towards its implementation. Also, there is a lack of knowledge about the role of an HTB; although the population expressed a willingness to donate extracted teeth.

Abstract
This study was purposed to assess the impact of ageing and resin cements polymerized with different modes on the removal time of lithium disilicate (LiSi) ceramics using Er,Cr:YSGG laser. Ninety LiSi slabs (6 × 6 × 1 mm) were cemented to freshly extracted bovine teeth using cements polymerized with different modes (light-curing (LC), dual-curing (DC), self-curing (SC)). The specimens were divided into subgroups according to ageing conditions (no thermal cycling, 5000 or 30,000 thermal cycling). After that, Er,Cr:YSGG laser was applied until LiSi slabs were debonded; the removal time was recorded. Vickers microhardness test, SEM and EDS analyses were performed for specimens with the longest exposure time to laser application in the groups. One uncemented sample was also used as a control. Data were analyzed with two-way ANOVA and Tukey post hoc test. Ageing and cement polymerization mode significantly affected the removal time of LiSi specimens. The removal time for the self-curing resin cement group (22.67 ± 12.68 s) was significantly longer than for cements polymerized with other methods (LC = 10.833 ± 7.28 s, DC = 12.0 ± 7.96 s). Removal time was significantly reduced after ageing in all polymerization modes; however, there were no significant differences between 5000 (11.83 ± 7.52 s) and 30,000 (11.83 ± 7.26 s) thermal cycling groups. Self-curing resin cements had prolonged the laser-aided removal time for LiSi ceramics. It can be concluded that Er,Cr:YSGG laser-aided removal of LiSi veneers after clinical use can be done more faster than its immediate removal.

Abstract
Dental research often uses bovine teeth as a substitute for human teeth. The aim of this study was to evaluate differences in the crystalline nanostructures of enamel and dentin between bovine and human teeth, using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The crystallite size (crystallinity) and microstrains were analyzed using XRD with the Rietveld refinement technique and the Halder-Wagner method. The 31P and 1H NMR chemical environments were analyzed by two-dimensional (2D) 1H-31P heteronuclear-correlation (HETCOR) magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR spectroscopy. Enamel had a greater crystallite size and fewer microstrains than dentin for both bovine and human teeth. When compared between the species, the bovine apatite had a smaller crystallite size with more microstrains than the human apatite for both dentin and enamel. The 2D HETCOR spectra demonstrated that a water-rich layer and inorganic HPO4- ions were abundant in dentin; meanwhile, the hydroxyl group in the lattice site was more dominant in enamel. A greater intensity of the hydroxyl group was detected in human than in bovine for both dentin and enamel. For 31P projections, bovine dentin and bovine enamel have wider linewidths than human dentin and human enamel, respectively. There are differences in the crystallite profile between human and bovine. The results of dental research should be interpreted with caution when bovine teeth are substituted for human teeth.

Abstract
A unique type of dental varnish (DV) containing surface pre-reacted glass (S-PRG) fillers of different concentrations was evaluated to determine the unpresented optimal ratio for inhibiting root dentin bio-demineralization. S-PRG DVs (10% to 40%)—10%-S, 20%-S, 30%-S, and 40%-S—were applied to bovine root dentin blocks and compared with controls—0%-f (no S-PRG) and 5%-NaF (5%-NaF). The Streptococcus mutans biofilm challenge was executed inside and outside an oral biofilm reactor for 7 days. The specimens were examined using a confocal laser scanning microscope and swept-source optical coherence tomography. Furthermore, they were observed using a scanning electron microscope and analyzed using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The roughness (SzJIS) due to leaching of DV materials and demineralization depth were significantly less in the S-PRG groups than the control groups (p < 0.05). Complete or partially plugged dentinal tubules (DTs) were observed in 20%-S, 30%-S, and 40%-S, while wide-open DTs were observed more in controls. Cylindrical tags were present in groups containing more than 20% S-PRG. F, Na, Al, and Sr were detected in a higher percentile ratio in the 20%-S, 30%-S, and 40%-S groups compared to 0%-f and 10%-S. Nonetheless, it is suggested that incorporating 20% to 30% S-PRG fillers in DVs would be effective enough as an anti-demineralization coating, together with supplementing minerals; further evaluation is required to validate these findings.

Abstract
Adhesion remains a key element in dentistry, whether approached in prosthetics, odontology, or orthodontics. It is a continuously researched aspect, as improved materials and adhesive methods keep emerging in the market. No orthodontic treatment can be effective without the proper adhesion strength of the bonded elements on the teeth. The objective of this research, in the broad context of self-ligating versus conventional brackets, was to compare active and passive self-ligating systems with a conventional one by conducting an in vitro study on human-extracted premolars. Shear bond strength tests were executed by means of an advanced materials-testing machine that generated maximum load and tensile strength values. The data obtained underwent statistical analysis with a statistical threshold of p < 0.05. The results regarding the statistical significance were acquired when comparing the passive self-ligating system with the active self-ligating and conventional systems (load-at-maximum-load mean 204.9, SD 91.09, and p < 0.05). In this study, the passive self-ligating bracket system appears to present increased shear bond strength.

Aims: To verify the efficacy of Er,Cr:YSGG laser for debonding of lithium disilicate (LD) reinforced glass ceramic veneers of different thicknesses. Methods: Forty bovine teeth were prepared and randomly divided into four groups (n=10/group) according to the ceramic disc thickness: C0.5 (Control group) and L0.5 (Laser irradiated group) in which LD discs had a thickness of 0.5mm and 5mm diameter; C1 and L1 in which LD discs had a thickness of 1mm and 5mm diameter. The lithium disilcate discs (IPS E.max®, shade HTA2) were fabricated following the manufacturer’s recommendations and cemented to the prepared tooth surface. The Er,Cr:YSGG laser was applied to the laser groups at 2.5W and 25Hz for 60seconds. Universal testing machine was used to evaluate the shear bond strength for all samples at a cross head speed of 1mm/min in an inciso-gingival direction parallel to the sample surface. After debonding, the samples were examined under stereoscope to evaluate the mode of failure according to the adhesive remnant index (ARI). Results: Laser irradiation significantly diminishes the shear bond strength from 10.868 MPa to 3.778 MPa for C0.5 and L0.5 groups respectively (p=0.00) and from 14.711 MPa to 4.992 MPa for C1 and L1 groups respectively (p=0.00). The shear bond strength required for debonding increased with increasing thickness of discs, but without significant difference (p=0.110). Higher ARI scores were seen in the laser groups (more cement remaining adhered to the tooth) when compared to the control groups. Conclusions: The Er,Cr:YSGG laser could be an effective and useful tool in debonding of lithium disilicate ceramic veneers as it decreases the shear bond strength required for veneer debonding.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate whether artificial CAD/CAM processed (computer-aided design/manufacturing) teeth could be a feasible option for the production of dental in vitro models for biomechanical testing. MATERIAL AND METHODS Disks (n = 10 per group) made from two different CAD/CAM-materials, one fiber-reinforced composite (FRC; Trinia, Bicon) and one polymethylmethacrylate-based resin (PMMA; Telio CAD, Ivoclar Vivadent), as well as bovine teeth (n = 10), were tested for their shear bond strength (SBS) and scored according to the adhesive remnant index (ARI). In addition, CAD/CAM-manufactured lower incisor teeth were tested for their ultimate load (Fu). RESULTS With regard to SBS, both PMMA (17.4 ± 2.2 MPa) and FRC (18.0 ± 2.4 MPa) disks showed no significant difference (p = 0.968) compared to bovine disks (18.0 ± 5.4 MPa). However, the samples differed with regard to their failure mode (PMMA: ARI 4, delamination failure; FRC: ARI 0 and bovine: ARI 1.6, both adhesive failure). With regard to Fu, FRC-based teeth could withstand significantly higher loads (708 ± 126 N) than PMMA-based teeth (345 ± 109 N) (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION Unlike PMMA-based teeth, teeth made from FRC showed sufficiently high fracture resistance and comparable SBS. Thus, FRC teeth could be a promising alternative for the production of dental in vitro models for orthodontic testing. CLINICAL RELEVANCE CAD/CAM-processed teeth made from FRC enable the use of standardized geometry and constant material properties. Using FRC teeth in dental in vitro studies has therefore the potential to identify differences between various treatment options with rather small sample sizes, while remaining close to the clinical situation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The present study evaluated the influence of a flowable resin layer on bond strength between resin cement and a universal adhesive applied using an immediate dentin sealing (IDS) technique. METHODS AND MATERIALS Coronary portions of bovine teeth were randomly divided into six groups (n=15). In the IDS.U group, the exposed dentin was immediately sealed with the Single Bond Universal adhesive (3M ESPE) following the self-etching protocol. In the IDS.UF group, a layer of Filtek Z350 (3M ESPE) flow resin was applied over the universal adhesive. In the DDS (control) group, the dentin was kept "fresh" and delayed dentin sealing was performed. After 24 hours in distilled water at 37°C, dentin surfaces were treated with pumice, phosphoric acid, and the application of the universal adhesive in the IDS.U and IDS. UF groups. The DDS group was treated with pumice and the universal adhesive was applied. The samples received cylinders of resin cement Rely X Ultimate (3M ESPE) made with the aid of starch tubes of 0.96 mm in diameter and 2 mm in length. They were submitted to the microshear bond strength test (μSBS) at 0.5 mm/min, after 24 hours (T1) and 3 months (T2). The fracture areas were evaluated qualitatively using a DSM 300 microscope (KOZO) with 45× magnification and classified as: adhesive, cohesive in cement, cohesive in dentin, or mixed. Samples were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The data were compared statistically between groups using the Kruskal-Wallis test, and intra-groups using the Mann-Whitney test (α=0.05). RESULTS There were no significant differences between groups for the bond strength values (p>0.05). The IDS.UF group showed higher values at 3 months, when compared to the values of 24 hours (p<0.001). All groups showed a predominance of adhesive fracture (86.7% to 100%). SEM showed dentinal tubules exposed in the IDS.U and DDS groups; in the IDS.UF group, the tubules were completely sealed. CONCLUSIONS The flow resin can be used on the adhesive when using the IDS technique because it increased the bond strength values after 3 months and promoted effective sealing of the dentinal tubules.

Abstract
Tooth enamel wear occurs because of daily mastication and occlusion. This study investigated the wear behavior of bovine teeth against aesthetic restorative materials in vitro. Abrader specimens were fabricated using four tooth-colored restorative materials (zirconia, lithium disilicate glass ceramic, dental porcelain, and resin composite), with bovine tooth enamel as a control. Flattened bovine tooth enamel was used as the substrate specimen. These materials were characterized by Vickers hardness tests and surface roughness measurements. Two-body wear tests between the abrader and substrate specimens were performed, and the worn topographies were evaluated using a contour-measuring instrument and 3D laser microscope. The restorative materials and bovine tooth enamel had similar surface roughness but different hardness and wear behaviors. Bovine teeth showed the largest wear in tooth–tooth contact as the abrader and substrate specimens. Compared to bovine teeth, zirconia, lithium disilicate glass ceramic, and dental porcelain showed greater hardness and less wear on their surfaces, and less substrate wear of the opposite tooth enamel. The lowest hardness resin composite showed intermediate wear on its surface, resulting in the lowest substrate wear. Accordingly, dentists should pay attention to the selection of restorative materials to reconstruct their morphologies owing to different wear behaviors.

Abstract
The relative dentin abrasivity-profilometry equivalent values were compared using non-contact profilometry with three subtypes of regular toothpaste and two subtypes of whitening toothpaste containing sodium bicarbonate and 35% hydrogen peroxide. Bovine dentin specimens were assigned to six groups: regular toothpaste (R): R1 (BAMBOO SALT GUM OINTMENT); R2 (MEDIAN TARTAR ORIGINAL); R3 (PERIOE Alpha), Reference slurry: RS (calcium pyrophosphate), whitening toothpaste (W): W1 (NET. WT); W2 (Vussen 28 WHITENING). Relative dentin abrasion-profilometry equivalent (RDA-PE) was determined by brushing 10,000 times (n=8). The pH of the toothpaste was measured (n=5) and the abrasive constituents of the toothpaste was analyzed by FE-SEM and EDS. The RDA-PE values ranged from 26 to166, and the pH level ranges were 4.928-9.153. The RDA-PE value of the whitening toothpaste containing hydrogen peroxide was not high compared with that of the regular toothpaste. The RDA-PE values of whitening toothpaste could vary depending on the mechanism and ingredients of the whitening agents.

Abstract
Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is a strong fluoride agent for caries control, remineralization, and reducing the incidence of dental caries. This study used 38% SDF with potassium iodide (KI) on enamel remineralization and compared it with the currently used 38% SDF and 5% sodium fluoride (NaF) varnish to treat artificial caries. Bovine incisors were demineralized for 120 h and randomly distributed for treatment by the remineralization agents for 120 h as follows: control (n = 15), SDF/KI (n = 15), SDF (n = 15), and NaF (n = 15). Colorimetric analysis was performed using the ΔE value. The Vickers microhardness (VHN) was determined to evaluate the enamel remineralization of the specimens. Polarized light microscopy (PLM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were performed to confirm the surfaces precisely and histologically. SDF/KI caused no significant difference in discoloration between the control and NaF groups. There was also no significant difference in the VHN after remineralization, but SDF/KI exhibited the highest mean microhardness. PLM revealed that SDF/KI had the greatest remineralization ability. In conclusion, SDF/KI is effective for dental enamel remineralization even with KI, which reduces discoloration.

Abstract
Objective: To compare the effects of combined treatment of topical fluoride and semiconductor laser (F&L) with topically using fluoride (F) on remineralization and prevention of enamel caries. Background: There is no agreement on whether semiconductor lasers can promote the effect of topical fluoride on the remineralization and prevention of dental caries. This study is the first systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the pooled effect of data from studies that compared the combined use of semiconductor lasers and topical fluorides with the single use of fluoride on remineralization and prevention of caries. Methods: We performed literature search on Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed. The keywords were as follows: ((diode lasers) OR (diode laser) OR (quantum cascade laser) OR (quantum cascade lasers) OR (Gallium Aluminum Arsenide lasers) OR (Gallium Aluminum Arsenide laser) OR (GaAlAs lasers) OR (GaAlAs Laser) OR (semiconductor laser) OR (semiconductor lasers)) AND ((caries) OR (dental caries) OR (remineralisation) OR (remineralization) OR (demineralization) OR (demineralisation)) AND fluoride. We carried out meta-analysis to compare the microhardness of demineralized enamel, lesion depth (LD), and percent reduction of calcium (Ca%) of sound enamel receiving F&L with F. Results: The search identified nine laboratory studies, which used 445 to 980 nm semiconductor lasers with various fluorides. The standard mean difference of microhardness of demineralized enamel between F&L and F was 1.06 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.12 to 2.00, p = 0.03]. No difference was found in LD (95% CI: -1.63 to 0.10, p = 0.08) and Ca% (95% CI: -0.52 to 1.28, p = 0.40) on sound enamel between the two groups. Conclusions: Semiconductor lasers enhance the effect of fluoride on remineralizing but not on preventing enamel caries. Moreover, substantial heterogeneity was found among the studies, and the results should be interpreted cautiously.

Abstract
This study aimed to fabricate nano-hydroxyapatite (nHA) grafted/non-grafted E-glass-fiber-based (nHA/EG) and E-glass fiber (EG) orthodontic retainers and to compare their properties with commercially available retainers. Stainless-steel (SS) retainers and everStick Ortho (EST) were used as control groups. The retainers were evaluated with Raman spectroscopy and bonded to bovine teeth. The samples were fatigued under cyclic loading (120,000 cycles) followed by static load testing. The failure behavior was evaluated under an optical microscope and scanning electron microscope. The strain growth on the orthodontic retainers was assessed (48h and 168h) by an adhesion test using Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. The characteristic peaks of resin and glass fibers were observed, and the debonding force results showed a significant difference among all of the groups. SS retainers showed the highest bonding force, whereas nHA/EG retainers showed a non-significant difference from EG and EST retainers. SS retainers’ failure mode occurred mainly at the retainer–composite interface, while breakage occurred in glass-fiber-based retainers. The strains’ adhesion to EST and EG was reduced with time. However, it was increased with nHA/EG. Fabrication of nHA/EG retainers was successfully achieved and showed better debonding force compared to other glass-fiber-based groups, whereas non-linear behavior was observed for the strains’ adhesion.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study is to test, in vitro, the anti-cariogenic effect of experimental hybrid coatings, with nano clays of halloysite or bentonite, loaded with sodium fluoride or with a combination of sodium fluoride and stannous chloride, respectively. METHODOLOGY The varnish Fluor Protector (1,000 ppm of F-) was used as positive control and no treatment was the negative control. Enamel specimens (5 mm × 5 mm) were obtained from bovine teeth. The specimens (n=10) had their surfaces divided into two halves (5 mm × 2.5 mm each), in which one half received one of the treatments (Hybrid; Hybrid + NaF; Hybrid + NaF + SnCl2; Hybrid + NaF Loaded; Hybrid + NaF + SnCl2 Loaded). The specimens were submitted to a cariogenic challenge using a biofilm model (S. mutans UA159, for 5 days). Enamel surfaces both under and adjacent to the treated area were analyzed for mineral loss and lesion depth, by transverse microradiography. The pH of the medium was measured twice a day, and the fluoride release was analyzed. Additional specimens were submitted to confocal analysis. RESULTS Data were statistically analyzed by two-way ANOVA followed by Tukey test (α=0.05). None of hybrid groups were able to reduce the lesion depth; the Hybrid + NaF group, however, was able to reduce mineral loss differing from the negative control (p=0.008). The groups showed no significant difference in the pH measurement and fluoride release. Confocal analysis confirmed that for all groups the biofilm growth was similar. CONCLUSION None of the hybrid groups reduced lesion depth, but the Hybrid + NaF group was able to promote protection against mineral loss.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate two-body wear (2BW) and three-body wear (3BW) of different CAD/CAM and direct restorative materials against zirconia using a dual-axis chewing simulator and an ACTA wear machine. METHODS 3 CAD-CAM resin-based composite or polymer infiltrated ceramic network blocs, 1 lithium disilicate CAD-CAM ceramic (LS2), 3 direct resin composites, amalgam and bovine enamel were tested. For 2BW, 8 flat specimens per material were produced, grinded, polished, stored wet (37 °C, 28d) and tested (49 N, 37 °C, 1,200,000 cycles) against zirconia. For 3BW, specimens (n = 10) were stored accordingly, and tested against a zirconia antagonist wheel (3Y-TZP, d = 20 mm, h = 6 mm; 200,000 cycles, F = 15 N, f = 1 Hz, 15% slip) in millet seed suspension. Wear resistance was analysed in a 3D optical non-contact profilometer, measuring vertical wear depth and volume loss for 2BW and mean wear depth and roughness (Ra) for 3BW. Vickers hardness (15 s, HV2) was measured. Statistical analysis was performed using non-parametric tests (Mann-Whitney-U test, p < 0.05). RESULTS 2BW and 3BW have a different impact on material surfaces. Similar wear resistance was observed for direct and indirect resin based materials with analogous filler configurations in both methods. Bovine enamel exhibited the best wear resistance in 2BW, but the least wear resistance in 3BW against zirconia. Regarding 2BW, a direct/indirect composite material pair of the same manufacturer showed the significantly highest mean volume losses (2.72/2.85 mm³), followed by LS2 (1.41 mm³). LS2 presented the best wear resistance in 3BW (mean wear depth 2.85 µm), combined with the highest mean Vickers hardness (598 MPa). No linear correlation was found between Vickers hardness and both wear testing procedures. The zirconia antagonists showed no recordable signs of wear. SIGNIFICANCE Dental restorative materials behave differently in 2BW and 3BW laboratory testing. Vickers hardness testing alone cannot hold for a correlation with wear behavior of materials. Micromorphological investigation of material composition can reveal insights in wear mechanisms related to variations in filler technologies.

Abstract
The abilities of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and focused ion beam (FIB) milling for obtaining high-resolution images from top surfaces, cross-sectional surfaces, and even in three dimensions, are becoming increasingly important for imaging and analyzing tooth structures such as enamel and dentin. FIB was originally developed for material research in the semiconductor industry. However, use of SEM/FIB has been growing recently in dental research due to the versatility of dual platform instruments that can be used as a milling device to obtain low-artifact cross-sections of samples combined with high-resolution images. The advent of the SEM/FIB system and accessories may offer access to previously inaccessible length scales for characterizing tooth structures for dental research, opening exciting opportunities to address many central questions in dental research. New discoveries and fundamental breakthroughs in understanding are likely to follow. This review covers the applications, key findings, and future direction of SEM/FIB in dental research in morphology imaging, specimen preparation for transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis, and three-dimensional volume imaging using SEM/FIB tomography.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the immediate shear bond strength of resin composite luting systems to tooth with or without saliva contamination in different curing modes. The Knoop hardness number of the resin composite luting agents was measured. Four combinations of resin composite luting systems were used. The shear bond strength to bovine teeth was measured with and without saliva contamination in different curing modes at different storage periods. The Knoop hardness number of the resin composite luting agents was also evaluated. Significantly lower enamel and dentin shear bond strengths and Knoop hardness number values were observed in all resin composite luting systems at 5 min versus 24 h, regardless of the curing mode or saliva contamination. The influence of the curing mode of the resin composite luting systems on shear bond strengths and Knoop hardness number was dependent on material. For the saliva contamination conditions, only G-CEM ONE EM did not show any significant difference in shear bond strength among the groups with and without saliva contamination, regardless of curing mode, storage period, or tooth substrate. All the resin composite luting systems showed lower shear bond strengths and Knoop hardness number values immediately after setting.

Abstract
Background This study evaluated the adhesion and whitening efficacy of a mixture of hydroxyapatite and P11-4 self-assembling peptide (HAP-peptide) on bovine enamel after pre-treatment with low-concentrated sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl). Methods Fifty-two caries-free bovine incisors were selected. 50 teeth were randomly allocated to five groups (n = 10). The first group was treated with a mixture of 6.25 wt% HAP and 5 ml P11-4 peptide, using NaOCl 3% as pre-treatment. Second, third and fourth groups were treated with 6.25 wt% HAP, 5 ml P11-4 peptide, and NaOCl 3%, respectively. In the fifth group, only water was applied (control group). The color of samples was measured using a spectrophotometer (USB4000-VIS-NIR-ES, Ostfildern, Germany). To evaluate color changes, ΔE values were statistically analyzed. Finally, adherence of HAP particles on two enamel surfaces with and without pre-treatment with NaOCl was analyzed with SEM. Results It was observed that the ΔE of the HAP-peptide suspension after pre-treatment with NaOCl was significantly stronger than the control group. In contrast, the overall color changes of separate applications of HAP, peptide, and NaOCl did not differ notably from the control group. SEM observations confirmed that pre-treatment with NaOCl resulted in a more pronounced coverage of HAP on the enamel surface. Conclusions Pre-treatment with a low-concentrated NaOCl enhanced the adherence of the HAP layer on the enamel surface, resulting in a stronger whitening effect. Trial registration The peptide-HAP suspension is effective in improving tooth whiteness.

Abstract
AimThe aim to this study is to evaluate the biocompatibility and antibiofilm actions of two nano-hydroxy apatite (NHA).MethodologyNano-hydroxy apatites are biomaterials use in direct contact with living tissues. Therefore, they should be tested for their safety beside assessment of their minimum inhibitory (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) using broth microdilution method. One hundred and twenty extracted bovine incisors were collected and cleaned to ensure the absence of any defects. Enamel blocks with different size (2 × 2 × 3 mm) and (5 × 5 × 2 mm) were prepared from their labial surfaces using an isomet saw. Enamel blocks are used for detecting the suitable concentration will be used in the following experiments using energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). The remaining enamel blocks divided into 5 equal groups to detect inhibitory effect against bacterial adhesion to the initial enamel caries like lesions using viable count technique beside the antibiofilm activity against mature biofilm of Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) using confocal laser microscopy. The remaining enamel blocks were used as a representing data for detecting surface topography for each group by using the scanning electron microscopy (SEM).ResultThe data showed safety of NHA suspensions. Additionally, only NHA suspension of large nanoparticle size (NHA-LPS) had MIC of 1.25 mg/ml against S. mutans. Also, have the higher percentages of Ca and P in the enamel blocks. Furthermore, the lowest level of bacterial adhesion was recorded in (group III) treated by NHA-LPS which was non-significantly different with the positive control group V. Biofilm thickness in group IV treated with NHA-small particle size (SPS) recorded high biofilm thickness followed by group III. Interestingly, group III showed greater killing effect against mature biofilm which is slightly higher than the positive control group V. In group III, surface topography revealed very smooth enamel surface with closed pores. Accordingly, NHA-LPS suspension had antiadhesive, antibacterial, and antibiofilm effect against cariogenic S. mutans representing a promising possibility to be recommended for safe effective remineralization.

Abstract
Canal filling materials and techniques have been one of the most studied topics in Endodontics. A simple search using the mesh term "root canal filling" in PubMed revealed more than 11,000 articles, an impressive number that is much higher than "root canal disinfection" (5,544 articles) or even the popular "root canal preparation" (8,527 articles). The overriding importance attributed to root filling procedures is not merely intuitive. It derived from the appealing relevance given by the appearance of the white lines in common radiographs grounded on retrospective clinical data that had identified the quality of a root filling as one of the major causes of treatment failure (lack of healing). Since the publication of the Washington study, impressive efforts have been made for the release of new materials and techniques, as well as, for the development of a plethora of laboratory methods to assess the quality of root filling procedures. This narrative review aims to address and discuss the most relevant laboratory methods to assess the root canal filling. Since filling quality improvements have not translated into higher success rates, as reported in longitudinal clinical studies, more than to deliver a simple methodology-based review, this paper aims to present an in-depth critical view on the assessment of laboratory methods used to study the filling materials and techniques. Recent data indicate that the long-term dimensional stability/degradation over time of endodontic sealers plays a central role in the treatment outcome. In this context, laboratory methods should be developed focusing on predicting, at least to some degree, the long-term clinical behaviour of root canal fillings, rather than simply ranking different materials or techniques.

Abstract
Irrigation plays an essential role in root canal treatment. The purpose of this narrative review was to critically appraise the experimental methods and models used to study irrigants and irrigation systems and to provide directions for future research. Studies on the antimicrobial effect of irrigants should use mature multispecies biofilms grown on dentine or inside root canals and should combine at least two complementary evaluation methods. Dissolution of pulp tissue remnants should be examined in the presence of dentine and, preferably, inside human root canals. Micro-omputed tomography is currently the method of choice for the assessment of accumulated dentine debris and their removal. A combination of experiments in transparent root canals and numerical modeling is needed to address irrigant penetration. Finally, models to evaluate irrigant extrusion through the apical foramen should simulate the periapical tissues and provide quantitative data on the amount of extruded irrigant. Mimicking the in vivo conditions as close as possible and standardization of the specimens and experimental protocols are universal requirements irrespective of the surrogate endpoint studied. Obsolete and unrealistic models must be abandoned in favour of more appropriate and valid ones that have more direct application and translation to clinical Endodontics.

Abstract
As a range of materials used in endodontics may cause tooth discolouration, exploration of factors responsible for the darkening of the tooth crown or root is warranted. This narrative review paper discusses the range of technical factors that apply in laboratory studies that assess endodontic discolouration. As an example of how these factors operate, particular examples relating to discolouration caused by endodontic medicaments containing tetracycline antibiotics are used. Following the PRILE 2021 guidelines approach, a summary of key variables to be addressed in the methodology for laboratory studies is presented, to inform future work.

Abstract
This study aims to develop an innovative dental product to remineralize dental enamel by a proper combination of ion-exchange resins as controlled release of mineral ions that form dental enamel, in the presence of amelogenin to guide the appropriate crystal growth. The novel product proposed consists of a combination of ion-exchange resins (weak acid and weak base) individually loaded with the remineralizing ions: Ca2+, PO43- and F-, also including Zn2+ in a minor amount as antibacterial, together with the protein amelogenin. Such cocktail provides onsite controlled release of the ions necessary for enamel remineralization due to the weak character of the resins and at the same time, a guiding tool for related crystal growth by the indicated protein. Amelogenin protein is involved in the structural development of natural enamel and takes a key role in controlling the crystal growth morphology and alignment at the enamel surface. Bovine teeth were treated by applying the resins and protein together with artificial saliva. Treated teeth were evaluated with nanoindentation, scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The innovative material induces the dental remineralization creating a fluorapatite layer with a hardness equivalent to sound enamel, with the appropriate alignment of corresponding nanocrystals, being the fluorapatite more acid resistant than the original mineral. Our results suggest that the new product shows potential for promoting long-term remineralization leading to the inhibition of caries and protection of dental structures.
