Novel strategy to the characterization and enhance the glycemic control properties of walnut-derived peptides via zinc chelation

This study aimed to utilize zinc coordination to promote the hypoglycemic and antioxidant properties of walnut-derived peptides, such as walnut protein hydrolysate (WPH) and Leu-Pro-Leu-Leu-Arg (LPLLR, LP5), of which LP5 was previously identified from WPH. The optimal conditions for the chelation were a peptide-to-zinc ratio of 6:1, pH of 9, duration of 50 min, and temperature of 50 °C. The WPH-Zn and LP5-Zn complexes increased the α-glucosidase inhibition, α-amylase inhibition, and antioxidant activity more than WPH and LP5 (p < 0.05). In particular, the antioxidant activity of WPH-Zn was superior to LP5-Zn. This is attributable to the WPH containing more aromatic amino acids, carboxylate groups and the imidazole groups, which implies its capacity to potentially coordinate with Zn2+ to form the WPH-Zn complex. Moreover, particle size, zeta potential, and scanning electron microscope indicated that the chelation of Zn2+ by peptides led to intramolecular and intermolecular folding and aggregation.

Association between vitamin D status and cardiometabolic risk factors in adults with type 2 diabetes in Shenzhen, China

Background

Evidence of vitamin D status and cardiometabolic health in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is still limited. This study aimed to investigate the association between vitamin D status and cardiometabolic risk factors among adults with T2DM in Shenzhen, China.

Methods

This cross-sectional study included 164 adults (aged ≥18 years) with T2DM who were hospitalized at Peking University Shenzhen Hospital from March 1, 2023, to May 31, 2023. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentration, the active marker of vitamin D, and three major cardiometabolic risk factors including blood pressure (BP), glucose metabolism-related indicators, and blood lipid profiles were collected. Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) was defined as 25(OH)D < 20 ng/mL. Correlation, Regression, and Logistic analysis were applied to verify the association among serum 25(OH)D concentration, VDD, and 11 cardiometabolic risk factors.

Results

Median 25(OH)D concentration was 21.78 [interquartile range (IQR)=17.51-28.05] ng/mL. The prevalence of VDD was 40.24%. Serum 25(OH)D concentration was significantly negatively correlated with diastolic BP (DBP) and glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) rather than systolic BP, plasma glucose, plasma C-peptide, and blood lipid profiles among adults with T2DM in both correlation and linear regression analysis. Furthermore, the adjusted odd ratio for poor DBP control (≥90 mmHg) of T2DM patients with VDD was 3.164 (95% confidence interval=1.303, 7.683; P=0.011) compared to those without VDD.

Conclusion

In China, VDD was highly prevalent among adults with T2DM and associated with greater cardiovascular risk factors, especially with increased chances of uncontrolled DBP. These findings suggest that vitamin D levels should be monitored in T2DM patients, especially those with high DBP.

Global research trends in prediabetes over the past decade: Bibliometric and visualized analysis

OBJECT

This study aimed to investigate global research advances and hot trends in prediabetes in the last decade based on a bibliometric analysis of publications. Publications from 2013 to 2022 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database through a topic search. With the use of CiteSpace, VOS viewer, and Bibliometrix R software packages, the number of publications, production categories, countries/regions, institutions, authors, journals, references, and keywords were comprehensively analyzed to sort out the hot spots and directions of prediabetes and predict the future research directions. A total of 13,223 papers were recruited for this study by the end of March 3, 2023. A generally increasing trend was observed in the number of annual publications. PLOS ONE (journal), USA (national), and the University of Copenhagen (institutional) published the most papers in this research area. The top 3 contributor authors were Tuomilehto Jaakko, Rathmann Wolfgang, and Peters Annette. "Intestinal microbiota" (2020-2022) was the most populated keyword in terms of intensity, and "biomarkers," "gut microbiota," and "metabolomics" were the most populated keywords in the last 3 years. "Prediabetes: a high-risk state for diabetes development-2012" was the strongest burst reference. This study summarized the research hotspots and trends in prediabetes research in the last decade. Frontier research can be found in the journal Diabetes Care and Journal of Clinical Endocrinology Metabolism. Prediabetes research focuses on preventing risk factors to reduce the prevalence of prediabetes, and current research hotspots focus on gut microbes and metabolism-related biomarkers.

Evaluation and treatment of metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease in adult patients with psoriasis

Psoriasis is strongly associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and metabolic syndrome, with patients having an approximately twofold increased risk of each compared to the general population. This increased risk is based on shared underlying genetic and cytokine profiles, as well as similar environmental risks. Many screening guidelines do not address the development of CVD and metabolic syndrome in these predisposed patients. These deficits are evidenced by the exclusion of psoriasis as a risk factor in validated 10-year CVD risk calculators for adult patients with chronic inflammatory diseases, as well as insufficient screening guidelines for insulin resistance in patients with psoriasis. This manuscript aims to discuss and propose allopathic and lifestyle recommendations for the screening and management of the aforementioned comorbidities in adult patients with psoriasis.
