Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the influence of adhesive resin application modalities on the film thickness of the adhesive resin and the effectiveness of a two-step universal adhesive (UA) bonded in self-etch (SE) bonding mode to high C-factor class-I cavity-bottom dentin. MATERIALS AND METHODS After application of the primer of G2-Bond Universal (G2B, GC), the adhesive resin was applied into standard class-I cavities (human molars) following four application modalities: (1) one layer, strongly air-blown; (2) one layer, gently air-blown; (3) two layers, each gently air-blown; (4) one layer, not air-blown. After being restored with composite, each tooth was sectioned to obtain one micro-specimen (n = 10), of which the adhesive resin film thickness was measured using optical microscopy. The micro-tensile bond strength (μTBS) was tested immediately or upon 100,000 thermocycles. Statistical analyses involved Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U testing (p < 0.05). RESULTS G2B's μTBS was significantly affected by the adhesive resin application modality and aging. Gently air-blowing the adhesive resin resulted in significantly higher immediate μTBS than strong air-blowing or no air-blowing. No significant difference in μTBS was found between single or double gently air-blown adhesive resin applications. The adhesive resin film thickness significantly varied with the application modalities. CONCLUSIONS A too thin or too thick adhesive resin film thickness adversely affected bond strength of the two-step UA applied in SE mode and high C-factor condition. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The adhesive resin layer thickness can affect the bonding performance of two-step UAs in high C-factor cavities. Dental clinicians remain advised to avoid improper air-blowing of UAs and strictly follow the application instructions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effect of an additional layer of universal adhesive on the interfacial enamel/dentin-composite gap formation in relation to application mode and aging, via spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). METHODS In vitro class V cavities in 114 caries-free premolars were restored by applying one or two layers of a universal adhesive (Scotchbond Universal, SBU) in self-etch (se) and etch-and-rinse (er) mode or the reference adhesive OptiBond FL (OFL-er). The restorations were imaged by SD-OCT (six groups, n = 8) and SEM (n = 3) directly after filling (t1), water storage (t2, 24 h), embedding (t3), and thermo-mechanical loading (t4, TCML). The interfacial gaps were quantified using 26 parameters and analyzed using principal component analysis and linear mixed effect models. RESULTS Gap formation at enamel and dentin was significantly influenced by the adhesive, the application mode and number of layers (p < 0.001). This was due to the influence of the SBU-er mode (p < 1e-05), which showed significantly more gap formation and a greater range of variation with double application when compared to SBU-se and OFL. The fewest interfacial gaps occurred with one or two applications of OFL-er and one layer of SBU-er. SIGNIFICANCE Adhesive application mode and the number of adhesive layers are relevant factors in the tooth-composite bond failure. Double application worsened the adaptation of SBU to freshly prepared dentin conditioned with phosphoric acid.

Abstract
This study evaluated the etching pattern, surface microhardness, and bond strength for enamel and dentin submitted to treatment with phosphoric, glycolic, and ferulic acids. Enamel and dentin blocks were treated with phosphoric, glycolic, and ferulic acid to evaluate the surface and adhesive interface by scanning electron microscopy (2000×). Surface microhardness (Knoop) was evaluated before and after etching, and microtensile bond strength was evaluated after application of a two-step adhesive system (Adper Single Bond 2, 3M ESPE) at 24 hours and 12 months storage time points. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's test showed a decrease in the microhardness values for both substrates after application of each acid (p<0.0001). The reduction percentage was significantly higher for enamel treated with phosphoric acid (59.9%) and glycolic acid (65.1%) than for ferulic acid (16.5%) (p<0.0001), and higher for dentin that received phosphoric acid (38.3%) versus glycolic acid (27.8%) and ferulic acid (21.9%) (p<0.0001). Phosphoric and glycolic acids led to homogeneous enamel demineralization, and promoted the opening of dentinal tubules, whereas ferulic acid led to enamel surface demineralization and partially removed the smear layer. The adhesive-enamel interface showed micromechanical embedding of the adhesive in the interprismatic spaces when phosphoric and glycolic acids were applied. Ferulic acid showed no tag formation. Microtensile bond strength at both time points, and for both substrates, was lower with ferulic acid (p=0.0003/E; p=0.0011/D; Kruskal Wallis and Dunn). The bond strength for enamel and dentin decreased when using phosphoric and glycolic acids at the 12-month time evaluation (p<0.05). Glycolic acid showed an etching pattern and microhardness similar to that of phosphoric acid. Ferulic acid was not effective in etching the enamel or dentin, and it did not provide satisfactory bond strength to dental substrates.

Effect of Different Application Modalities on the Bonding Performance of Adhesive Systems to Dentin: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis. Cells 2023; 12:cells12010190. Abstract
Diverse types of dental adhesives exhibit different cytotoxic outcomes on cells in vitro. Currently, no standard adhesive application technique has so far been decisive for clinicians for better durability of resin-dentin bonds of adhesive systems. The purpose of this study was to systematically review the literature to evaluate the bonding performance of adhesive systems to dentin by using different application modalities. The systematic research strategy was conducted by two reviewers among multiple databases: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and Scielo. In vitro studies reporting the effects of additional steps for the application of adhesive systems on the bond strength to dentin were selected. Meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager Software version 5.3.5 using the random effects model. The methodological quality of each in vitro study was assessed according to the parameters of a previous systematic review. The electronic research through different databases generated a total of 8318 references. After the examination of titles and abstracts, a total of 106 potentially relevant studies accessed the full-text evaluation phase. After full-text examination, 78 publications were included for the qualitative analysis, and 68 studies were included in the meta-analysis. Regarding the etch-and-rinse adhesive systems, the application modalities that improved the overall bond strength were the application of a hydrophobic resin layer (p = 0.005), an extended application time (p < 0.001), an application assisted by an electric current (p < 0.001), a double-layer application (p = 0.05), the agitation technique (p = 0.02), and the active application of the adhesive (p < 0.001). For self-etch adhesive systems, the techniques that improved the overall bond strength were the application of a hydrophobic resin layer (p < 0.001), an extended application time (p = 0.001), an application assisted by an electric current (p < 0.001), a double-layer application (p < 0.001), the agitation technique (p = 0.01), and the active application of the adhesive (p < 0.001). The in vitro evidence suggests that the application of adhesive systems using alternative techniques or additional strategies may be beneficial for improving their bond strength to dentin. The application modalities that favored the overall bond strength to dentin were an extended application time, a double-layer application, an application assisted by an electric current, the active application of the adhesive, and the application of a hydrophobic resin layer. Worth mentioning is that some techniques are intended to increase the degree of the conversion of the materials, and therefore, improvements in the biocompatibility of the materials can be expected.

Abstract
The aim of the present clinically controlled two-year study was to investigate the influence of laser-based cavity preparation on the long-term performance of Class V resin-composite fillings. Class V non-carious lesions (n = 75) were randomly assigned to two test and one control group. Cavities in both test groups were prepared using an Er,Cr:YSGG laser (Waterlase MD, Biolase, Irvine, California, USA). The device was operated at 3 W (150 mJ, 30 J/cm2), 50% water, 60% air, 30 Hz in H mode. Subsequently, laser-prepared tooth surfaces in test group I (n = 21) were additionally conditioned by acid etching (etch-and-rinse). Laser-prepared cavities of test group II (n = 21) received no additional acid conditioning. After application of an adhesive, all cavities were restored using the resin-composite Venus®. For cavities in the control group (n = 33) conventional diamond burs were used for preparation which was followed by an etch-and-rinse step, too. The fillings were evaluated immediately (baseline) and after 6, 12 and 24 months of wear according to the C-criteria of the USPHS-compatible CPM-index. The results showed that after 24 month of wear, laser-preparation was associated with fillings of high clinical acceptability. Compared to conventional bur-based treatment, laser-based cavity preparation resulted in fillings with high marginal integrity and superior marginal ledge configurations (p = 0.003). Furthermore, laser-preparation combined with additional acid-conditioning (test group I) resulted in fillings with the best marginal integrity and the lowest number in marginal discoloration, especially at the enamel-composite margins (p = 0.044). In addition, total loss of fillings was also less frequently observed in both laser groups as compared to the control. The results clearly demonstrate that laser-based cavity preparation will benefit the clinical long-time performance of Class V resin-composite fillings. Furthermore, additional acid-conditioning after laser preparation is of advantage.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of resin-coating using one-bottle adhesives on the bond strength of resin cements in single-visit and multiple-visit treatments. Three one-bottle adhesives were used for resin-coating and/or pre-treatment adhesives prior to cementation, in conjunction with resin cements from the same manufacturers: Clearfil Universal Bond Quick with Panavia V5 (UBQ/Pv5), Scotchbond Universal Adhesive with RelyX Ultimate (SBU/RxU), and Optibond All-in-one with NX3 Nexus (OP/NX3). Bovine dentin surfaces were left uncoated or resin-coated. After 1-h water storage (single-visit) or 1-week water storage with a non-eugenol temporary cement (multiple-visit), a CAD/CAM resin block was cemented to uncoated or resin-coated dentin surfaces. Microtensile bond strengths (µTBSs) were measured and statistically analyzed (α=0.05). Application of resin-coating improved µTBSs. The multiple-visit group exhibited lower values of µTBS than the single-visit group. Selection of the materials affected µTBSs. Resin-coating and single-visit treatment are desirable for CAD/CAM resin composite restorations.

Abstract
Contemporary adhesives use etch-and-rinse, self-etch, and multimode adhesive strategies. Simplified and universal adhesives present lower bond strength to dentin than conventional, two-bottle etch-and-rinse adhesives. The purpose of this study was to evaluate bonding performance of simplified and universal adhesives to dentin after modifying their application protocol (multiplying applications and extending application time). Adhesive layer thickness (ALT) and shear bond strength (SBS), as well as the correlation between these parameters was calculated. Two universal (Single Bond Universal and Prime & Bond One Select) and two self-etch adhesives (Adper Easy One and Xeno V) were tested. Significant differences in ALT were detected between the adhesives, as well as within the same adhesive between study groups. Tested adhesives presented the thinnest adhesive layer when applied 2 times in 20 s. Single Bond Universal obtained the highest SBS results of all adhesives. Most adhesives (except for Prime & Bond One Select) obtained the highest SBS, when applied two or three times in 40 or 60 s, respectively. No correlation between the ALT and SBS was found. The study showed that increasing the number of applications and extending the application time of self-etch and universal adhesives can be recommended to improve their performance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine the use of α-hydroxy glycolic acid (GA) as a surface pretreatment for dental restorative applications. The etching pattern of GA pretreatment of dental hard tissues was assessed by surface microhardness and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effectiveness of GA surface etching on the enamel and dentin resin bond strengths was assessed using two etchant application modes (rubbing and no rubbing) and three adhesive systems (Single Bond [SB], One Step Plus [OSP], and Scotchbond Universal [SBU]). METHODS Knoop microhardness measurements were carried out on polished enamel and dentin surfaces before and after treatment with 35% GA, 35% phosphoric acid (PA), or distilled water (control group) for 30 seconds. The microtensile bond strength test was carried out on enamel and dentin. Ultrastructural analysis of the surface and interfacial interaction was qualitatively accomplished using SEM. RESULTS Etching with either PA or GA significantly decreased the enamel microhardness, with GA being significantly less aggressive than PA ( p<0.001), while both acids showed similar decreases in dentin microhardness ( p=0.810). SEM revealed similar etching patterns of GA and PA, while apparently a thinner hybrid layer was observed for GA groups. In dentin, the bond strengths were statistically similar between PA and GA groups, regardless of the etchant application mode ( p>0.05). However, rubbing of GA enhanced the bond strength to enamel. PA and GA significantly increased the SBU bond strength to enamel when compared to SB and OSP ( p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS GA effectively etched enamel and dentin surfaces, resulting in bond strength values similar to those associated with traditional PA. GA is a suitable enamel and dentin surface etchant for adhesive restorative procedures.

Abstract
This study evaluated the effect of mechanical loading with a new device on the microtensile bond strength (µTBS) of adhesive systems to dentin. Forty molars were divided according to adhesive systems: self-etch (ClearfilTM SE Bond -CSE) and etch-and-rinse (Adper ScotchbondTM 1XT -ASB); and to aging (n=5): control; MC1-250,000; MC2-500,000; and MC3-750,000 mechanical cycles. Microtensile bond strength was measured and fracture modes were analyzed. Data for µTBS were subjected to Kruskal-Wallis and post hoc tests (p<0.05). Mechanical loading (p<0.001) and adhesive systems (p=0.024) affected µTBS values. The adhesive systems showed a similar behavior, except in the MC3 group, which the self-etch CSE showed the highest µTBS. The new device promotes a decreasing of µTBS as the number of cycles increased. Difference between materials was observed only after 750,000 mechanical cycles.

Abstract
Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate
the micro tensile bond strength of a self-etch
adhesive system following 1 year storage in water. Materials and Methods: 10 sound human molar teeth
were used for micro tensile bond strength test. Twostep
self-etch dentin adhesive (Clearfil SE Bond®)
was applied to the flat dentin surfaces according to
the manufacturer’s instructions. Composite blocks (Z-
250; 3M ESPE) of 5 mm in height have been prepared
by using layering technique. Teeth were stored in water
for 24 hours at 37°C and longitudinally sectioned
to obtain dentin sticks of 1 mm2.Randomly selected
samples from half of the teeth were immediately
subjected to micro tensile test and. Remaining
specimens were tested after 1 year storage in water.
Bond strengths were calculated in megapascal (MPa). Results: Means and standard deviations of the
Clearfil SE Bond® micro tensile bond strength values
were, respectively, 37.31 ± 13.77 MPa and 24.78 ±
2.99 MPa after 24 h and 1 year of storage in water.
The difference was statistically significant (p=0.031). Conclusion: Long-term storage in water decreased
the micro tensile bond strength values of the twostep
self-etch adhesive which has been accepted
as the gold standard in bond strength tests.

Abstract
Objective The oral environment is subject to biofilm accumulation and cariogenic challenge,
and few studies exist on the effect of these factors on the bond strength of
adhesive systems. The aim of this study was to test if the exposure of adhesive
interfaces to cariogenic challenge under biofilm accumulation could promote higher
degradation than the exposure to biofilm accumulation alone. Material And Methods Five molars were ground until exposure of medium dentin and then restored (Single
Bond 2 and Z250 3M ESPE). The tooth/resin sets were cut to obtain beam-shaped
specimens, which were distributed according to the aging conditions (n=20): water
for 24 h (control); biofilm under cariogenic challenge for 3, 5 or 10 days;
biofilm without cariogenic challenge for 10 days; and water for 3 months.
Microcosm biofilms were formed from human saliva and grown in a saliva analogue
medium, supplemented or not with sucrose to promote cariogenic challenge.
Specimens were tested for microtensile bond strength, and failure modes were
classified using light microscopy. Bond strength data were analyzed using ANOVA
and failure modes were analyzed using ANOVA on ranks (α=0.05). Results No significant differences in bond strength were detected among the aging methods
(P=0.248). The aging period was associated with an increase in the frequency of
adhesive failures for the groups aged for 10 days or longer (P<0.001). Conclusion Aging leads to a higher prevalence of interfacial adhesive failures, although this
effect is not associated with cariogenic challenge or reduction in bond
strengths.

Abstract
SUMMARY
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of different surface treatments of yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia (Y-TZP) on bond strength durability and marginal discrepancies. For adhesion testing, 144 specimens of VITA In-Ceram YZ ceramic for InLab were obtained (5.25×3.75×4.5 mm) and divided into six groups (n=24) according to the surface treatment: 1) Control (CRTL): untreated; 2) SIL: tribochemical silica coating (CoJet system, 3M/ESPE AG); 3) V1+HF: spray application of low-fusing porcelain glaze (V1, VITA Akzent Spray Glaze) followed by etching with hydrofluoric acid (HF) (one minute); 4) V1+SIL: V1 glazing (VITA Akzent Spray Glaze) followed by tribochemical silica coating; 5) V2+HF: brush application of low-fusing porcelain glaze (VITA Akzent Glaze) plus etching with HF (one minute); and 6) V2+SIL: V2 glazing (VITA Akzent Glaze) plus tribochemical silica coating. After all treatments, the surfaces were silanized for five minutes (ESPE-SIL) and cementation was performed using Panavia F (Kuraray). Half of the specimens in each treatment were tested 24 hours after cementation (dry), with the other half subjected to storage (150 days) and thermocycling (12,000×) (aging), and then a shear test was carried out (1 mm/min). The micromorphological (digital optical profilometry and scanning electron microscopy) and elemental analyses of the treated surfaces were performed. The inner surfaces of 60 Y-TZP infrastructures were conditioned and marginal fit was evaluated. The statistical analysis revealed that the groups treated via surface glaze application followed by hydrofluoric acid etching and silanization showed the highest bond strength (in dry and aging conditions), but the bond strengths were affected by aging. The highest marginal discrepancies were observed in the groups receiving glaze (117.4 ± 29.6 to 105.8 ± 12.2 μm) when compared to other groups (55.3 ± 8.7 and 55 ± 8.5 μm). Low-fusing porcelain glaze + hydrofluoric acid etching changed the morphology of the Y-TZP ceramic and improved the adhesion to the resin cement, but obtaining high and stable bond values to Y-TZP remains challenging. Marginal discrepancies increased with glazing.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of multiple coatings of the one-step self-etching adhesive on immediate microtensile bond strength to primary dentin. METHODS Twelve caries-free human primary molars were randomly divided into 2 groups with 6 teeth each. In group 1, each tooth was hemisected into two halves. One half was assigned to control subgroup 1, which was bonded with a single-step self-etching adhesive according to the manufacturer's instructions; the other half was assigned to experimental subgroup 1 in which the adhesive was applied three times before light curing. In group 2, the teeth were also hemisected into two halves. One half was assigned to control subgroup 2, which was bonded with the single-step self-etching adhesive according to the manufacturer's instructions; the other half was assigned to experimental subgroup 2 in which three layers of adhesive were applied with light curing each successive layer. Microtensile bond strength was immediately tested after specimen preparation. RESULTS When the adhesive was applied three times before light curing, the bond strength of the experimental subgroup 1 (n=33, 57.49 +/-11.61 MPa) was higher than that of the control subgroup 1 (n=31, 49.71 +/-11.43 MPa, P<0.05). When using the technique of applying multiple layers of adhesive with light curing each successive layer, no difference of immediate bond strength was observed between the control subgroup 2 and the experimental subgroup 2 (P>0.05). CONCLUSION strength to primary dentin when using the technique of light-curing after applying three layers of adhesive.

Abstract
Aim: To evaluate and compare the microleakage of self-etch adhesives placed under different clinical techniques and to analyze the resin–dentin interfacial ultrastructure under scanning electron microscope (SEM). Materials and Methods: 100 extracted human premolars were divided into two groups for different adhesives (Clearfil S3 and Xeno III). Class V cavities were prepared. Each group was further divided into four subgroups (n = 10) according to the placement technique of the adhesive, i.e. according to manufacturer's directions (Group 1), with phosphoric acid etching of enamel margins (Group 2), with hydrophobic resin coat application (Group 3), with techniques of both groups 2 and 3 (Group 4). The cavities were restored with composite. Ten samples from each group were subjected to microleakage study. Five samples each of both the adhesives from groups 1 and 3 were used for SEM examination of the micromorphology of the resin–dentin interface. Results: At enamel margins for both the adhesives tested, groups 2 and 4 showed significantly lesser leakage than groups 1 and 3. At dentin margins, groups 3 and 4 depicted significantly reduced leakage than groups 1 and 2 for Xeno III. SEM observation of the resin–dentin interfaces revealed generalized gap and poor resin tag formation in both the adhesives. Xeno III showed better interfacial adaptation when additional hydrophobic resin coat was applied. Conclusions: In enamel, prior phosphoric acid etching reduces microleakage of self-etch adhesives, while in dentin, hydrophobic resin coating over one-step self-etch adhesives decreases the microleakage.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The goal of this paper is to undertake a literature search collecting all dentin bond strength data obtained for six adhesives with four tests (shear, microshear, tensile and microtensile) and to critically analyze the results with respect to average bond strength, coefficient of variation, mode of failure and product ranking. METHOD A PubMed search was carried out for the years between 1998 and 2009 identifying publications on bond strength measurements of resin composite to dentin using four tests: shear, tensile, microshear and microtensile. The six adhesive resins were selected covering three step systems (OptiBond FL, Scotch Bond Multi-Purpose Plus), two-step (Prime & Bond NT, Single Bond, Clearfil SE Bond) and one step (Adper Prompt L Pop). RESULTS Pooling results from 147 references showed an ongoing high scatter in the bond strength data regardless which adhesive and which bond test was used. Coefficients of variation remained high (20-50%) even with the microbond test. The reported modes of failure for all tests still included high number of cohesive failures. The ranking seemed to be dependant on the test used. SIGNIFICANCE The scatter in dentin bond strength data remains regardless which test is used confirming Finite Element Analysis predicting non-uniform stress distributions due to a number of geometrical, loading, material properties and specimens preparation variables. This reopens the question whether, an interfacial fracture mechanics approach to analyze the dentin-adhesive bond is not more appropriate for obtaining better agreement among dentin bond related papers.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the development of shear bond strength of resin composites using self-etching primer systems. Four different types of self-etching primer systems with different combinations of their recommended resin composites were used. Bovine incisors were mounted in self-curing resin and the facial surfaces were wet ground on #600-SiC paper to expose the dentin. The shear bond strengths of ten samples per test group were measured at a crosshead speed of 1.0 mm/min after storage for 5, 10, and 60 min, and 24 h in distilled water at 37 degrees C. One-way ANOVA followed by Dunnett's test (alpha = 0.05) was used to examine the significance of differences between the mean bond strength at 24 h and each of the other storage periods. The dentin bond strengths of all the materials tested increased with prolonged storage time. Such differences in the changes in bond strength might have clinical implications if a restoration is subjected to high stress immediately after it has been placed. It is important to consider the development of dentin bond strength to allow the materials sufficient maturation time prior to functional loading or application of other forms of external stress.
