Abstract
Pulse-wave velocity (PWV) is a widely used clinical marker of arterial stiffness. Associations between several physical fitness measures and arterial stiffness have been examined. However, these results were inconsistent. Therefore, we conducted a cross-sectional study to assess the relationship between various physical fitness parameters and arterial stiffness in older adults. From January 2014 to December 2015, 1500 participants (men, n = 587; mean age, 71.78 ± 5.10 years) in South Korea were enrolled in the study. Koreans aged >65 years who agreed to participate in the study were enrolled. Individuals who were unable to exercise because of underlying conditions were excluded. VO2 max (mL/kg/min), handgrip strength (kg), handgrip strength (kg)/body weight (kg) ratio, one-leg standing time (s), and 10-meter walking speed (m/s) were measured. The brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) was measured using a VP-1000 instrument. VO2 max (mL/kg/min), handgrip (kg)/body weight (kg) ratio, one-leg standing time (s), and 10-meter walking speed (m/s) were significantly inversely associated with baPWV. This association was consistent even after adjusting for confounding factors. Our study revealed a significant association between various aspects of physical fitness and arterial stiffness. This study suggests that physical fitness is a useful predictor of arterial stiffness in older adults.

Abstract
AIMS Arterial stiffness is an important risk factor of arteriosclerosis and cardiovascular events. Sedentary behavior (SB) is associated with increased risk for chronic cardiovascular diseases and poor health outcomes. This study aims to investigate the associations of objectively measured patterns of SB with arterial stiffness in Chinese community-dwelling older women. METHODS AND RESULTS Cross-sectional data were derived from the baseline survey of the Physical Activity and Health in Older Women Study (PAHIOWS). Arterial stiffness was evaluated through cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI), CAVI ≥ 9 was defined as cutoff point. SB patterns including sedentary time in SB bouts of ≥10, 30 and 60 min, number of SB bouts ≥ 10, 30 and 60 min, were measured via tri-axial accelerometers. Multivariate logistic regression was used to investigate associations of different SB patterns with arterial stiffness. Of the total 1125 women aged 60-70, the prevalence of CAVI ≥ 9 was 25.8%. After adjustment for confounding factors, only sedentary time in SB bout ≥ 30 min and 60 min, number of SB bouts ≥ 60 min were associated with arterial stiffness, with an adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval) of 1.06 (1.00-1.12) and 1.11 (1.03-1.20) per 30 min increase per day, 1.35 (1.05-1.74) per bout per day, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Longer duration of prolonged SB periods was associated with higher level of arterial stiffness. Shortening and interrupting accumulated periods of SB may be an achievable strategy to reduce risk of cardiovascular disease in self-care and cardiovascular nursing.

Abstract
Walking speed as one index of gait ability is an important component of physical fitness among older adults. Walking speed-arterial stiffness relationships have been studied, but whether poor walking speed is associated with higher segment-specific arterial stiffness in older adults is unclear. We thus aimed to examine the relationship between walking speed and segmental arterial stiffness among older community dwellers. This study was a cross-sectional study of 492 older Japanese community dwellers (age range, 65 to 96 years). Heart-brachial PWV (hbPWV), brachial-ankle PWV (baPWV), heart-ankle PWV (haPWV), and cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) were used as arterial stiffness indices. Walking speed, strength, flexibility, and cognitive function were also assessed. The participants were categorized into low (Slow), middle (Middle), and high (Fast) tertiles according to walking speed. The CAVI and baPWV were significantly lower in Fast than in Slow. Significant decreasing trends in CAVI and baPWV and a tendency toward decreasing trend in haPWV were observed from Slow to Fast, whereas hbPWV did not significantly differ among tertiles and no trend was evident. The results remained significant after normalizing CAVI and PWVs for multicollinearity of arterial stiffness indices and major confounding factors, such as age, gender, body mass index, blood pressure, cognitive function, and each physical fitness. Therefore, these findings suggest that poor walking speed is associated with higher segment-specific arterial stiffness of the central and lower limbs, but not of upper, in older adult community dwellers.

Abstract
[Purpose] In the present study, we investigated the effects of regular aerobic training
with different intensities and durations on new indices of arterial stiffness measured via
an upper-arm oscillometric device. [Participants and Methods] We gathered data from 41
middle-aged and older people (age 65.0 ± 11.7 years). Participants were randomly divided
into five groups: (1) 15 minutes of low intensity aerobic training (n=10); (2) 30 minutes
of low intensity training (n=7); (3) 15 minutes of moderate-intensity training (n=9); (4)
30 minutes of moderate-intensity training (n=8); and (5) a non-training group (n=7).
Training was conducted for 8 weeks, three times per week. Arterial pulse wave index,
arterial pressure-volume index, brachial-ankle and heart-brachial pulse wave velocity,
cardio-ankle vascular index, brachial and ankle blood pressure, heart rate, and peak
oxygen uptake were measured before and after the intervention. [Results] All indicators of
arterial stiffness and brachial and ankle blood pressure in the exercise groups were
significantly lower after versus before the intervention. Peak oxygen uptake did not
differ before versus after the intervention. [Conclusion] The present findings indicate
that regular aerobic exercise may be important in reducing arterial stiffness regardless
of the intensity or duration of aerobic exercise.

Abstract
We compared arterial stiffness after glucose intake in active and inactive elderly people with impaired glucose tolerance and clarified whether physical activity was associated with arterial stiffness after ingestion of glucose. Twenty older adults with impaired glucose tolerance were analyzed in a cross-sectional design. Based on the international physical activity questionnaire, participants were divided into the active group (daily step count: 10,175.9 ± 837.8 steps/day, n = 10) or the inactive group (daily step count: 4,125.6 ± 485.9 steps/day, n = 10). Brachial-ankle (systemic) and heart-brachial (aortic) pulse wave velocity and cardio-ankle vascular index (systemic) were increased at 30, 60, and 90 min compared to baseline after a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test in the inactive but not the active group. Heart-brachial pulse wave velocity did not change compared to baseline after a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test in either group. The area under the curve for brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity was associated with daily living activity (r = -0.577, p = 0.008), daily step activity (r = -0.546, p = 0.013), and the daily step count (r = -0.797, p = 0.0001). The present findings indicate that physical activity or inactivity is associated with arterial stiffness following glucose ingestion.

Abstract
BACKROUND The effect of different exercise modalities on the vascular structure has been the subject of clinical trials but there is not enough data about wrestlers. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to compare the arterial stiffness parameters in adolescent wrestlers with those of age-matched sedentary controls to show the effects of long and heavy training. METHODS This study was carried out as a case-control study. Thirty three (N= 33) elite male adolescent wrestlers (12-18 years) and 35 age and sex-matched control subjects (P= 0.438) with a sedentary lifestyle were included the study. The data was obtained by using sonography and a sphygmomanometer. Systolic and diastolic diameters and intima media thickness (IMT) measurements were performed from the carotid arteries of the subjects. The arterial tension was measured in the same session, and arterial stiffness parameters were calculated using specific formulas. RESULTS The mean age range was 15.9 ± 0.9 years and 16.0 ± 0.8 years for the wrestlers and control subjects, respectively (P= 0.43). Statistically, the Body Mass Index (BMI) was significantly higher in wrestlers (mean = 23.7 ± 4.0 kg/m2; P= 0.00). The groups had no difference in height (P= 0.80) and weight (P= 0.05). The systolic blood pressure (SBP) was significantly higher in wrestlers (mean = 120 ± 13.4 mmHg; P= 0.00); the pulse was significantly lower in wrestlers (mean = 69.61 ± 17.2 beats/min; P= 0.00); the IMT was significantly lower in wrestlers (IMT mean = 0.288 ± 0.1 mm; P= 0.01); the diastolic wall stress (DWS) was significantly higher in wrestlers (DWS mean = 933.64 ± 298.0 mmHg; P= 0.03) than controls. No significant differences were found in the elastic modulus (P= 0.11), compliance (P= 0.86), and distensibility (P= 0.86) parameters between the groups. CONCLUSION Bradycardia is an expected condition for athletes. SBP and DWS were found to be high in wrestlers, suggesting that arterial tissue is more susceptible to stress. The low IMT indicates the protective effect of regular exercise against atherosclerosis. It is known that regular exercise is good for the vascular structure while heavy exercise puts a load on the vascular structure. The fact that the elastic modulus, compliance, and distensibility do not differ between the groups suggests that structural changes in the adolescents have no effect on the vascular wall.

Abstract
[Purpose] Brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) and cardio-ankle vascular index
(CAVI) are simple, accurate, and reproducible indices of arterial stiffness. However, only
a few studies have evaluated the influence of exercise-training baPWV and CAVI on arterial
stiffness. Thus, this study aimed to examine the influence of aerobic-training baPWV and
CAVI on arterial stiffness. [Participants and Methods] The participants were 20
middle-aged females (age, 60.1 ± 1.6 years) who were sedentary non-smokers. The
participants underwent an exercise intervention, including a 50-min session of
moderate-intensity exercises two or three times a week for 12 weeks. Blood pressure (BP),
baPWV, and CAVI were measured before and after exercise. Blood nitrite/nitrate (NOx) was
also measured as an index of vascular endothelial function. [Results] BaPWV significantly
decreased after exercise, whereas CAVI and blood NOx did not change significantly after
exercise. A significant correlation was observed between the decrease in baPWV and
systolic BP after exercise. In addition, the participants with higher systolic BP before
exercise showed a greater decrease in baPWV after exercise. [Conclusion] These results
suggest that BP has a significant role in decreasing arterial stiffness after exercise.
Further studies are required to elucidate the similarities and differences between baPWV
and CAVI to use them more effectively as assessment parameters for arterial stiffness.
