Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare the effects of dry needling (DN) and extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) in the treatment of plantar fasciitis (PF). The study included 55 patients with PF. The patients were randomly divided into 2 groups. The DN group applied 3 sessions of DN to the myofascial trigger points in the lower limb muscles. The ESWT group applied 3 sessions of ESWT to the plantar fascia. For clinical evaluation, we used a visual analog scale (VAS) (first step, rest, activity) and Foot Function Index (FFI) (pain, disability, activity). Assessments were done baseline, post-treatment first week, and fourth week. Maximum pain-free standing time (Max PfST) and maximum pain-free walking distance (Max PfWD) were recorded at baseline and post-treatment fourth week. In this study, we found significant improvement in VAS, FFI, Max PfST, and Max PfWD in both groups (p < .01). VAS-activity baseline-forth week change was significantly superior in the DN group compared to the ESWT group (p = .023). FFI-disability baseline-fourth week change was significantly superior in the DN group compared to the ESWT group (p = .048). There was no significant difference in other treatment-related changes between the groups (p > .05). However, VAS-rest baseline-fourth week change and FFI-pain baseline-fourth week change trended towards statistical significance between groups ((p = .056), (p = .052) respectively). This study showed that DN may be a good alternative treatment for patients with PF, with effects similar to or even superior to ESWT.

Abstract
Conservative treatments for plantar fasciitis have different levels of effectiveness, so it is necessary to personalize the therapeutic modality that improves the patients' symptoms. METHODS A double-blinded randomized clinical trial was designed to evaluate the short-term efficacy of a physical treatment in chronic plantar fasciitis, namely iontophoresis, compared with radial shockwave therapy. Heel pain, health status using the EuroQol-5D questionnaire, and fascia thickness measured with ultrasound were evaluated. In total, 127 patients were randomly selected for group A and treated with iontophoresis therapy (lidocaine 0.4% and dexamethasone 0.5%), or for group B, in which they were treated with radial shockwave therapy (EWST). Measurements were taken at baseline and at follow-up during the 5 weeks of the study. RESULTS Statistically significant differences were observed to the shockwave therapy group in respect to the final fascia thickness, and the VAS scale (p = 0.001). The differences between groups A and B showed that the shockwave group follow-up after 3 weeks experienced complete pain remission (1.0 ± 0.9; 95%CI 0.8-1.2) and after the 6-week follow-up, complete pain remission of plantar fasciitis was observed for both therapies. Patients had a better perception of the use of EWST at the end of the treatment, although in both groups it was satisfactory (p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The results of this study showed a shorter-term effectiveness of shockwave treatment compared with the use of iontophoresis. However, both techniques were effective in satisfactorily reducing pain in this short period.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Plantar fasciitis (PF) is the most common cause of heel pain. Among conservative treatments, extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is considered effective for refractory PF. Studies have shown that applying ESWT to the trigger points (TrPs) in the triceps surae may play an important role in pain treatment in patients with PF. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to combine the concept of trigger points and ESWT to explore the effect of this combination on plantar temperature and pressure in patients with PF. METHODS After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 86 patients with PF were recruited from the pain clinic of Huadong Hospital, Fudan University and randomly divided into experimental (n = 43) and control groups (n = 43). The experimental group was treated with extracorporeal shock waves to treat the medial heel pain point and the gastrocnemius and soleus TrPs. The control group was only treated with extracorporeal shock waves at the medial heel pain point. The two groups were treated twice with an interval of 1 week. Primary measurements included a numerical rating scale (NRS) score (overall, first step, heel pain during daily activities), and secondary measurements included heel temperature, Roles-Maudsley score (RMS), and plantar pressure. All assessments were performed before treatment (i.e., baseline) and 6 and 12 weeks after treatment. RESULTS During the trial, 3 patients in the experimental group withdrew from the study, 2 due to interruption of the course of treatment by the COVID-19 epidemic and 1 due to personal reasons. In the control group, 3 patients fell and were removed due to swelling of the heel. Therefore, only 80 patients with PF were finally included. After treatment, the two groups showed good results in NRS score (overall, first step, heel pain during daily activities), RMS, and plantar temperature, especially in the experimental group, who showed a significantly better effect than the control group. CONCLUSION ESWT of the heel combined with the triceps trigger point of the calf can more effectively improve the pain, function and quality of life of refractory PF than ESWT of the heel alone. In addition, ESWT of the heel combined with the triceps trigger point of the calf can effectively reduce the skin temperature of the heel on the symptomatic side, indicating that the heel temperature as measured by infrared thermal imaging may be used as an independent tool to evaluate the therapeutic effect for patients with chronic PF. Although extracorporeal shock waves combined with TrPs treatment can cause changes in the patients' gait structure, plantar pressure is still difficult to use as an independent tool to evaluate the therapeutic effect for PF. Abstract
Burns are a common type of trauma that seriously affect not only the physical health, but also the mental health and quality of life of the patient. Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is an emerging treatment that has been used in clinical treatment. It has many advantages, including safety, non-invasiveness, efficiency, short treatment duration, fewer complications, and relatively low prices. In clinical settings, ESWT has played an important role in the healing process of burns and the prevention of sequelae. This article reviews the history of ESWT, the mechanism of ESWT to promote burn healing, and the application of ESWT in burns. Current status of ESWT treatment for burns as well as future perspectives for research have been summarized and proposed. However, patients with burns cannot be considered recovered when the wounds have healed, we need some new technology to adjust to the challenges of the future.

Abstract
Ledderhose disease (LD, or plantar fibromatosis) is a rare, nodular, hyperproliferative condition affecting the plantar aponeurosis of the foot. At present, several conservative, non-surgical treatments have been documented, although with various degrees of success, with little evidence in the literature supporting their efficacy. In this scenario, extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) has emerged as a safe, effective, and less invasive approach for the successful treatment of several refractory musculoskeletal conditions and soft tissue injuries. Again, recent experimental evidence has shown that ESWT can exert beneficial effects on different fibroproliferative diseases, including Dupuytren's and Peyronie's disease. In contrast, the literature regarding the use of ESWT for LD is extremely limited, and no optimal application parameters have been defined to ensure its effectiveness for this disease. Therefore, in the present paper, we report a case of a 48-year-old male patient who developed bilateral foot LD, which was successfully treated with a novel ESWT protocol of treatment consisting of three sessions at 1-week intervals, with 2000 impulses at 5 Hz with an energy flux density of 0.20 mJ/mm2. Our data show that this ESWT treatment protocol was effective in completely relieving pain, restoring full functional activity, and thus, greatly improving the patient's quality of life.

Abstract
Background Plantar fasciitis (PF) is the most common cause of chronic heel pain among adults. Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is the recommended in the current guidelines, and the small needle-knife yields acceptable clinical effects for musculoskeletal pain. Objective To systematically compare the efficacy of the small needle-knife versus ESWT for the treatment of PF. Methods The present review was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (i.e., "PROSPERO", CRD42023448813). Two of the authors searched electronic databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the small needle-knife versus ESWT for the treatment of PF, and collected outcomes including curative effect, pain intensity, and function. Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Handbook Risk of Bias tool and the quality of the RCTs was evaluated according to the Jadad Scale. The same authors independently performed data extraction from the included studies, which were imported into Review Manager version 5.4.1(Copenhagen: Nordic Cochrane Centre, The Cochrane Collaboration, 2020) for meta-analysis. Results The initial literature search retrieved 886 studies, of which 6 were eventually included in this study. Meta-analysis revealed no significant difference in curative effect (OR = 1.87; 95 % CI [0.80, 4.37], p = .15) nor short-term pain improvement (MD = 2.20; 95 % CI [-2.77, 7.16], p = .39) between the small needle-knife and ESWT. However, the small needle-knife may be more effective than ESWT for pain improvement in mid-term (MD = 9.11; 95 % CI [5.08, 13.15], p< .00001) and long-term follow-ups (MD = 10.71; 95 % CI [2.18, 19.25], p< .00001). Subgroup analysis revealed that the small needle-knife combined with a corticosteroid injection yielded a statistically significant difference in reduction of pain intensity at all follow-ups (MD = 4.84; 95 % CI [1.33, 8.36], p = .007; MD = 10.99; 95 % CI [8.30, 13.69], p< .00001; MD = 17.87; 95 % CI [15.26, 20.48], p< .00001). Meta-analysis revealed no statistical differences in short-term (MD = 1.34; 95 % CI [-3.19, 5.86], p = .56) and mid-term (MD = 2.75; 95 % CI [-1.21, 6.72], p = . 17) functional improvement between the needle-knife and ESWT groups. In a subgroup analysis of moderate-quality studies, the small needle-knife demonstrated a favorable effect on mid-term functional improvement (MD = 1.58; 95 % CI [0.52, 2.65], p = .004), with low heterogeneity (χ2 = 0.77, p = .038, I2 = 0 %). Conclusion: Pain reduction and functional improvement are essential for the treatment of PF. Therefore, treatment using the small needle-knife may be superior to ESWT. Results of this systematic review and meta-analysis may provide alternative treatment options for patients with PF as well as more reliable, evidence-based recommendations supporting use of the small needle-knife.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effectiveness of focused extracorporeal shock wave therapy (FESWT) in treating postpartum sacroiliac joint (SIJ) dysfunction. METHODS A total of 90 patients with SIJ dysfunction were included and randomly assigned to FESWT, manual therapy (MT), or combination therapy (CT) groups. Pain intensity and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) score were measured upon admission, after 1 and 2 weeks of treatments. The treatment efficacy and adverse events of each group were also assessed. RESULTS There were no significant differences among three groups regarding clinical data, pain intensity, and ODI score on admission (all P > 0.05). After 1 week of treatment, FESWT exhibited similar pain intensity and lower ODI score (P < 0.001) compared to MT. After 2 weeks of treatment, the pain and ODI in FESWT were similar with MT. The pain in CT was lower than MT after 1 week, but lower than FESWT after 2 weeks. Furthermore, we identified interaction effects between treatment method and duration in relation to pain intensity (Fgroup*time = 5.352, P = 0.001) and ODI score (Fgroup*time = 5.902, P < 0.001). FESWT group exhibited the highest improvement rate of 66.7%, while CT group achieved the highest cure rate of 73.3%. No adverse events were observed in any of the patients during 2 months follow-up period. CONCLUSIONS Compared to MT, FESWT mainly reduced the ODI score rather than pain after 1 week of treatment. After 2 weeks, the effect of FESWT in relieving the pain was inferior to the MT.

Abstract
Stroke remains a leading cause of disability worldwide, with survivors often experiencing impairments in balance, pain, spasticity, and control that limit their ability to perform daily living activities. Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) has emerged as a potential treatment modality to improve these outcomes in stroke patients. This review aims to provide a comprehensive examination of the effects of ESWT on stroke patients, focusing on the theoretical background, balance, pain reduction, muscle spasticity and control, and upper and lower extremities. This study reviewed the use of ESWT in treating balance, pain, and spasticity in stroke patients, focusing on articles published in PubMed between January 2003 and January 2023. Systematic reviews related to stroke were used to provide an overview of stroke, and a total of 33 articles related to balance, pain, and spasticity were selected. ESWT has several shock wave generation methods and application methods, and it has been shown to have positive therapeutic effects on various aspects of rehabilitation for stroke patients, such as improving balance, reducing pain, decreasing muscle spasticity and increasing control, and enhancing functional activities of the upper and lower extremities. The efficacy of ESWT may vary depending on the patient's condition, application method, and treatment area. Therefore, it is important to apply ESWT according to the individual characteristics of each patient in clinical practice to maximize its potential benefits.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study intended to analyze the application of extracorporeal shock wave therapy in medicine and to evaluate the quality of related literature. METHODS All publications were extracted from 2000 to 2021 from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). The literature characteristics were depicted by VOSviewer (version 1.6.15) and the online bibliometric website ( http://bibliometric.com/ ). The future trends and hotspots were conducted by Bibliographic Item Co-occurrence Matrix Builder (version 2.0) and gCLUTO software. RESULTS We analyzed 1774 articles corresponding to the criteria for ESWT publications from 2000 to 2021. Most studies were conducted within the United States and China which besides have the most cooperation. The most published research institutions are Chang Gung University, Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, and Kaohsiung Medical University. Six research hotspots were identified by keyword clustering analysis: Cluster0: The effects of ESWT on muscle spasticity; Cluster1: The application of ESWT in osteoarthritis (OA); Cluster2: Therapeutic effect of ESWT on tendon diseases; Cluster3: Early application of ESWT/ESWL in urolithiasis; Cluster4: The Role of angiogenesis in ESWT and the efficiency of ESWT for penile disease; Cluster5: The Special value of radial extracorporeal shock wave therapy (rESWT). CONCLUSIONS A comprehensive and systematic bibliometric analysis of ESWT was conducted in our study. We identified six ESWT-related research hotspots and predicted future research trends. With the gradual increase of research on ESWT, we find that ESWT is used more and more extensively, such in musculoskeletal disease, bone delay union, neurological injury, andrology disorders, lymphedema, and so on. In addition, the mechanism is not destructive damage, as initially thought, but a restorative treatment. Furthermore, delayed union, cellulite, burn, and diabetic foot ulcers may be the future direction of scientific study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) combined with Kinesio Tape (KT) for plantar fasciitis (PF) is lacking in the literature. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the effect of ESWT combined with KT on foot pain and function in patients with PF based on ultrashort wave therapy and stretching. METHODS A total of 91 patients with PF were randomly divided into the ESWT group (ETG, n= 23), KT group (KTG, n= 23), combined treatment group (CTG, n= 22) and control group (CG, n= 23). Herein, changes in visual analysis scale (VAS) score, plantar fascia thickness (PFT) and American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) score were examined. RESULTS The groups were compared after 4 weeks and the results showed that the VAS scores of ETG, KTG and CTG were significantly smaller than that of CG (P< 0.05). In addition, the VAS score of CTG was significantly smaller than that of KTG (P< 0.001). Meanwhile, the AOFAS scores of ETG and CTG were significantly greater than that of CG (P< 0.001). Moreover, the AOFAS score of CTG was significantly greater than those of ETG and KTG (P< 0.01). Comparisons within groups were also conducted at weeks 0 and 4 and the results showed that the VAS scores of ETG, KTG and CTG significantly decreased (P< 0.001); the PFT of ETG and CTG significantly decreased (P< 0.05); and the AOFAS score of ETG, KTG and CTG significantly increased (P< 0.001). CONCLUSION Based on ultrashort wave therapy and stretching, ESWT and KT therapy could improve the foot pain and function of patients with PF, and the combined modality therapy is more effective. ESWT and combined treatment has a positive effect on patients' PFT. However, single KT treatment has a limited effect on PFT.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the effects of different therapeutic interventions that have ever been evaluated in randomized controlled trials on pain due to plantar fasciitis. METHODS We searched different electronic databases until September 2022. Mean differences (MDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation was used to evaluate the overall certainty evidence. RESULTS A total of 236 studies met the study criteria, including 15,401 patients. Botulinum toxin MD -2.14 (CI: -4.15, -0.14), micronized dehydrated human amnion/chorion membrane injection MD -3.31 (CI: -5.54, -1.08), dry needling MD -2.34 (CI: -4.64, -0.04), low-dye taping MD -3.60 (CI: -4.16, -3.03), low-level laser therapy MD -2.09 (CI: -2.28, -1.90), myofascial releases MD -1.79 (CI: -2.63, -0.94), platelet-rich plasma MD -2.40 (CI: -4.16, -0.63), radiofrequency MD -2.47 (CI: -4.65, -0.29), and stretching MD -1.14 (CI: -2.02, -0.26) resulted in being effective treatments for pain when compared to the control in the short term. In the medium and long term, only extracorporeal shock wave therapy MD -0.97 (CI: -1.13, -0.81)/MD -2.49 (CI: -3.17, -1.82) was effective for improving pain when compared to the control. CONCLUSIONS Considering the available studies, this systematic review and meta-analysis showed that different therapeutic interventions seem to be useful strategies for improving pain in patients with plantar fasciitis. In the medium and long term, only extracorporeal shock wave therapy was effective in improving pain when compared to the control.

Abstract
PURPOSE To review the cases of patients treated using endoscopic plantar fascia release (PFR) with calcaneal spur resection (CSR) and examine why the combined procedures cause complications. METHODS The medical records of patients treated with endoscopic PFR with CSR from November 2017 to December 2019 with a follow-up of >2 years were reviewed. RESULTS A total of 40 feet in 40 patients (22 females, 18 males) were enrolled. The mean age and body mass index were 51.1 years and 24.7 kg/m2, respectively. The mean follow-up duration was 5.7 years. The visual analog scale for pain improved from 80.7 to 8.8 mm, and the Japanese Society for Surgery of the Foot score improved from 44.7 to 95.6 points (Wilcoxon signed rank test, P < .001 for both). Complications occurred in 8 patients (20%): 3 had flatfoot, 3 had an injury to the first branch of the lateral plantar nerve, 1 had scar pain, and 1 had a wound infection. CONCLUSION The 40 patients treated with endoscopic PFR with CSR for plantar fasciitis had good outcomes with a high complication rate; the invasiveness of creating the working space for the combined procedures was thought to be responsible. Abstract
Tendinopathy is a degenerative disease of the tendons caused by prolonged overstretching or overuse of the tendons. It accounts for a large proportion of musculoskeletal disorders which can occur in all age groups. The management of tendinopathy is typically conservative. In clinical practice, when other conservative treatments fail, extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is normally used as an efficient alternative to surgical management. Several basic studies have shown that ESWT with lower energy flux densities can produce some biological responses in vivo to tendinopathy and may accelerate the initiation of the healing process in injured tendons. ESWT has a positive impact on the interactive chain of biological response, enhancing the signaling pathways of angiogenesis through mechanical conduction, and promoting cell proliferation and collagen formation. Finally, it helps tissue regeneration by controlling inflammation. The purpose of this review is to summarize the biological responses generated by ESWT in tendinopathy through a comprehensive review of the published literature. Although ESWT has been used clinically for the treatment of tendinopathies for nearly decades, less is known about the experimental studies of its biological effects on tendon tissue. Further studies on the biological response of ESWT for tendon injuries in vivo are needed in the future in order to provide better management to patients.

Abstract
Extracorporeal shock waves (ESWs) are used in the treatment of soft tissue injuries, but their role in the treatment of myofascial pain has not yet been demonstrated. The aim of this study was to investigate changes in cell biology of fibroblasts derived from deep/muscular fascia following treatment with ESWs. Primary fascial fibroblasts were collected from small samples of human fascia lata of the thigh of three volunteer patients (two men, one woman) during orthopedic surgery, and put in culture. These cells were exposed to 100 impulses of 0.05 mJ/mm2 with a frequency of 2.5 Hz, using 3D-printed support. This study demonstrated for the first time that ESWs can lead to in vitro production of hyaluronan-rich vesicles immediately after the treatment. At 1, 4, and 24 h after treatment, Alcian blue and Toluidine blue staining; immunocytochemistry to detect hyaluronic acid binding protein (HABP), collagen I, and collagen III; and transmission electron microscopy demonstrated that these vesicles are rich in hyaluronan and collagen I and III. The diameter of these vesicles was assessed, highlighting a small size at 1 h after ESW treatment, whereas at 4 and 24 h, they had an increase in the size. Particularly evident was the release of hyaluronan-rich vesicles, collagen-I, and collagen-III starting at 1 h, with an increase at 4 h and maintenance by 24 h. These in vitro data indicate that fascial cells respond to ESW treatment by regulating and remodeling the formation of extracellular matrix.
