Recent Advances in Biomimetics for the Development of Bio-Inspired Prosthetic Limbs

Recent advancements in biomimetics have spurred significant innovations in prosthetic limb development by leveraging the intricate designs and mechanisms found in nature. Biomimetics, also known as "nature-inspired engineering", involves studying and emulating biological systems to address complex human challenges. This comprehensive review provides insights into the latest trends in biomimetic prosthetics, focusing on leveraging knowledge from natural biomechanics, sensory feedback mechanisms, and control systems to closely mimic biological appendages. Highlighted breakthroughs include the integration of cutting-edge materials and manufacturing techniques such as 3D printing, facilitating seamless anatomical integration of prosthetic limbs. Additionally, the incorporation of neural interfaces and sensory feedback systems enhances control and movement, while technologies like 3D scanning enable personalized customization, optimizing comfort and functionality for individual users. Ongoing research efforts in biomimetics hold promise for further advancements, offering enhanced mobility and integration for individuals with limb loss or impairment. This review illuminates the dynamic landscape of biomimetic prosthetic technology, emphasizing its transformative potential in rehabilitation and assistive technologies. It envisions a future where prosthetic solutions seamlessly integrate with the human body, augmenting both mobility and quality of life.

Advances in prosthetic technology: a perspective on ethical considerations for development and clinical translation

Technological advancements of prostheses in recent years, such as haptic feedback, active power, and machine learning for prosthetic control, have opened new doors for improved functioning, satisfaction, and overall quality of life. However, little attention has been paid to ethical considerations surrounding the development and translation of prosthetic technologies into clinical practice. This article, based on current literature, presents perspectives surrounding ethical considerations from the authors' multidisciplinary views as prosthetists (HG, AM, CLM, MGF), as well as combined research experience working directly with people using prostheses (AM, CLM, MGF), wearable technologies for rehabilitation (MGF, BN), machine learning and artificial intelligence (BN, KKQ), and ethics of advanced technologies (KKQ). The target audience for this article includes developers, manufacturers, and researchers of prosthetic devices and related technology. We present several ethical considerations for current advances in prosthetic technology, as well as topics for future research, that may inform product and policy decisions and positively influence the lives of those who can benefit from advances in prosthetic technology.

Lower limb prosthetic prescription

Lower limb amputations are the most common level of amputation. Mobilization of patients with lower limb amputations is an important rehabilitation goal. It is critical to prescribe the most appropriate prosthesis for the patient to achieve the rehabilitation goal in lower extremity amputations. Appropriate prosthesis prescription in lower extremity amputations is based on the selection of the correct prosthetic parts. The choice of prosthesis should be based on the patient's activity level and potential. The prosthesis decision should be made by a team, particularly with the participation of the patient.

Design, fabrication and experiments of a hydraulic active-passive hybrid prosthesis knee

BACKGROUND

Due to low friction, passive mechanical prostheses move compliantly followed by the stump and are used widely. Advanced semi-active prostheses can both move passively like passive prostheses and provide active torque under specific conditions. However, the current mechanical-hydraulic coupling driven semi-active prostheses, in order to meet the low passive friction requirements with a low active transmission ratio, lead to a significant problem of insufficient active torque.

OBJECTIVE

A hybrid active and passive prosthesis was developed to solve the incompatibility problem of low passive friction and high active driving torque of semi-active prostheses.

METHODS

The mechanical structure and control strategy of the prosthesis were demonstrated. The performance of the prosthesis was tested by bench and human tests.

RESULTS

Passive subsystem damping adjustment ranges from 0.4 N⋅(mm/s)-1 to 300 N⋅(mm/s)-1. The switching time between the damping and the active subsystem is 32 ± 2 ms. The continuous active torque output is more than 24 Nm. In level walking, the peak torque is about 28 Nm.

CONCLUSION

The proposed active-passive hybrid hydraulic prosthesis could satisfy both low passive friction and high active actuation.

Clinical and Demographic Factors Influencing the Asymmetry of Gait in Lower-Limb Prosthetic Users

(1) Background: A lower limb prosthesis replaces a lost body part with a differential representation of gait function and its symmetry. Many physical, personal, and specific factors in amputees influence gait asymmetry. The aim of this study was to determine the factors influencing the asymmetry of gait in amputated patients. (2) Methods: The study group consisted of 12 people. Gait quality was assessed using the MoCap OptiTrack® Motion Capture System and the results were correlated with demographic factors (age, gender), morphological features (height, weight), amputation-related factors (cause and side of amputation, prosthesis time, and prosthesis fixation), and ailment pain. The control group consisted of 12 people. (3) Results: In the study group, a positive correlation between the mean walking speed and height in the study group was demonstrated, as well as a positive correlation between the difference in ROM and height, and a negative correlation between the mean walking speed and age. A negative correlation between the difference in ROM and age was found in both groups. A positive correlation was found between the width of the support and the weight in the control group. No other statistical relationship with the parameters describing gait asymmetry was found. (4) Conclusions: Statistical analysis showed that mean walking speed and ROM difference in the study group were positively related to height and negatively to age. No other statistical relationship with the parameters describing gait asymmetry was found.
