Energy plants as biofuel source and as accumulators of heavy metals

Fossil fuel depletion and soil and water pollution gave impetus to the development of a novel perspective of sustainable development. In addition to the use of plant biomass for ethanol production, plants can be used to reduce the concentration of heavy metals in soil and water. Due to tolerance to high levels of metals, many plant species, crops, non-crops, medicinal, and pharmaceutical energy plants are well-known metal hyperaccumulators. This paper focuses on studies investigating the potential of Miscanthus sp., Beta vulgaris L., Saccharum sp., Ricinus communis L. Prosopis sp. and Arundo donax L. in heavy metal removal and biofuel production. Phytoremediation employing these plants showed great potential for bioaccumulation of Co, Cr, Cu, Al, Pb, Ni, Fe, Cd, Zn, Hg, Se, etc. This review presents the potential of lignocellulose plants to remove pollutants being a valuable substrate for biofuel production. Also, pretreat-ments, dealing with toxic biomass, and biofuel production are discussed.

Combined Application of Citric Acid and Cr Resistant Microbes Improved Castor Bean Growth and Photosynthesis while It Alleviated Cr Toxicity by Reducing Cr+6 to Cr3

Chromium is highly harmful to plants because of its detrimental effects on the availability of vital nutrients and secondary metabolites required for proper plant growth and development. A hydroponic experiment was carried out to analyze the effect of citric acid on castor bean plants under chromium stress. Furthermore, the role of two chromium-resistant microorganisms, Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus, in reducing Cr toxicity was investigated. Different amounts of chromium (0 µM, 100 µM, 200 µM) and citric acid (0 mM, 2.5 mM, and 5 mM) were used both alone and in combination to analyze the remediation potential. Results showed that elevated amounts of chromium (specifically 200 µM) minimized the growth and biomass because the high concentration of Cr induced the oxidative markers. Exogenous citric acid treatment boosted plant growth and development by improving photosynthesis via enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, guaiacol peroxidase, catalase, and ascorbate peroxidase, which decreased Cr toxicity. The application of citric acid helped the plants to produce a high concentration of antioxidants which countered the oxidants produced due to chromium stress. It revealed that castor bean plants treated with citric acid could offset the stress injuries by decreasing the H₂O₂, electrolyte leakage, and malondialdehyde levels. The inoculation of plants with bacteria further boosted the plant growth parameters by improving photosynthesis and reducing the chromium-induced toxicity in the plants. The findings demonstrated that the combination of citric acid and metal-resistant bacteria could be a valuable technique for heavy metal remediation and mediating the adverse effects of metal toxicity on plants.

A holistic approach to soil contamination and sustainable phytoremediation with energy crops in the Aegean Region of Turkey

The objective of this current review article is to evaluate the current knowledge of the contaminated soil in the study area based on reports and the results of previous experimental studies in the literature and to discuss the feasibility of phytoremediation with biofuel production using energy crops. The results indicated that the soil contamination was related mainly to the thermal power plant and mining activities in Kütahya, high industrial activity in İzmir, heavy metal and radioactive pollution in Manisa and Muğla. Moreover, the sources of the contamination are geothermal resources and transportation in Aydın and Denizli, respectively. However, soil pollution in Afyonkarahisar and Uşak provinces has not been discussed due to a lack of detailed reports and data in the literature. Besides, energy crops such as Zea mays, Ricinus communis, and Gossypium hirsitum were identified as appropriate candidates for İzmir, Denizli, Manisa, and Aydın due to being resistant to the arid climate. In Muğla province, Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus bicostata can be cultivated because of having adaptation to moderate climatic conditions. Ricinus communis and Helianthus annuus were determined to be very suitable energy crops for the phytoremediation of many heavy metals in Kütahya. The review promotes the development of economic, environmental, and social benefits to regain the contaminated areas through phytoremediation. The findings of the study are important for creating sustainable solutions for remediation of polluted soils in Turkey, as well as for shedding light on the process of establishing appropriate policies to make soils contaminated suitable for agriculture.

Heavy metals uptake and its impact on the growth dynamics of the riparian shrub Ricinus communis L. along Egyptian heterogenic habitats

Heavy metals are well known for their toxicity and become significant environmental pollution with a continually rising technology and public outcry to ensure the safest and healthiest environment. The present study aims to investigate the uptake capability of heavy metals and its impact on the growth dynamics of Ricinus communis L. (castor bean), along various habitats in Qalyubia Province, Egypt. Three composite plants and soil samples were collected from four different habitats: urban (residential area), canal banks, field edges, and drain banks. The samples were analyzed for nutrients and heavy metals. At the same time, forty quadrats (5 × 5 m) were selected to represent the micro-variations of castor bean in the selected habitats to determine its growth criteria and normalized vegetation index (NDVI). The lowest size index, volume, and number of leaves of castor bean were recorded along canal banks and they were characterized by high soil heavy metal concentration, especially Zn, Cu, and Ni, while the highest values were recorded along field edges with lower heavy metal concentration. Moreover, the NDVI indicated that castor bean from most studied habitats, except field edges, was healthy population. This study revealed that the leaves collected from all habitats were considered to be toxic with Cu. The bioconcentration factor (BF) of the investigated heavy metals was greater than 1. The BF order for heavy metals uptake by castor bean leaves was Fe > Ni > Mn > Cu > Zn. Consequently, the species selected in the present study can be used as a biomonitor of these heavy metal polluted soils. Moreover, it could be used as a phytoremediator, taken into consideration its use in all medicinal purposes.

Crop suitability assessment in remediation of Zn contaminated soil

Zinc (Zn) is naturally present in soils and constitutes an essential micronutrient for plants. Mining, industrial, as well as various agricultural activities all contribute to increasing the Zn concentrations in soils to levels that are toxic for plants. The aim of this study was to evaluate the capacity of field crops to remove Zn from contaminated soils. The experimental design included 28 treatments, comprising seven field crops (Hordeum vulgare L., Ricinus communis L., Phaseolus vulgaris L., Brassica juncea Czem., Sorgum vulgare L., Spinacea oleracea L., Solanum lycopersicum L.) and four Zn levels (0, 500, 1000, 1500 mg kg^-1) applied to soils. The dry weight (DW) of the aboveground biomass of R. communis and S. lycopersicum increased significantly as the Zn concentration in the soil increased, whereas the DW significantly decreased in P. vulgaris, B. juncea and S. vulgare. Results indicated that S. oleracea was the most efficient in concentrating Zn in the aboveground tissues, followed in decreasing order by H. vulgare, S. lycopersicum, R. communis, S. vulgare, P. vulgaris, and B. juncea. H. vulgare resulted the most efficient in accumulating Zn both in fruit and in leaves and stems, whereas S. lycopersicum resulted the most efficient in accumulating Zn in roots. The BAF and TF values indicated that H. vulgare and S. oleracea resulted being suitable for Zn phytoextraction, whereas the remaining crops being suitable for Zn phytostabilization. These results highlight the phytoremediation potential of the seven analysed crops.

Defense manifestations of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants in Ricinus communis L. exposed to lead in hydroponics

Lead (Pb) is a major inorganic pollutant with no biological significance and has been a global concern. Phytotoxicity of lead induces toxic effects by generating reactive oxygen species (ROS), which inhibits most of the cellular processes in plants. Hydro-ponic experiments were performed with Ricinus communis to investigate the toxicity and antioxidant responses by exposing to different concentrations of lead (0, 200 and 400 µM) for 10 days. Pb stress caused a significant increase in electrolyte leakage, non-enzymatic antioxidants (phenols and flavonoids) and a decrease in the elemental profile of the plant. Histochemical visualization clearly indicates the significant increase of H2O2 production in dose-dependent manner under Pb stress. Likewise, an increase in catalase, guaiacol peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activity was also evident. Ascorbate peroxidase and MDAR, on the other hand, responded biphasically to Pb treatments showing a decrease in concentration. The decline in redox ratio GSH/GSSG was imposed by the indirect oxidative stress of Pb. Hence these findings showed the ameliorative potential of R. communis to sustain Pb toxicity under oxidative stress.

Evaluating drought tolerance of castor ecotypes in the center of Iran

In order to study the reaction of six castor ecotypes to drought stress, a split plot experiment was carried out in randomized complete blocks. Eight indices including stress sensitivity index (SSI), tolerance index (TOL), mean productivity (MP), geometric mean productivity (GMP), harmonic mean (HARM), stress tolerance index (STI), sensitivity drought index (SDI) index and yield index (YI) were calculated for ecotypes by using seed yield in normal condition and under stress. After that, correlations between indices were calculated and dendrogram and biplot results were drawn. Normal yield and stress yield had positive significant correlations with MP, GMP, STI, and HARM indices in mild, moderate and severe stresses. Biplot analysis showed that Isfahan and Naein ecotypes had desirable yield under mild and average stress and Naein had desirable yield under severe stress and also normal condition.
