Clinical evaluation of established optimal immobilizing doses of medetomidine-ketamine in captive reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus)

RESPONSE AND PHYSIOLOGIC OUTCOMES AFTER BUTORPHANOL, MIDAZOLAM, AND MEDETOMIDINE IMMOBILIZATION AND REVERSAL IN CAPTIVE REINDEER (RANGIFER TARANDUS)

Sedation, recovery response, and physiologic outcomes were evaluated in five captive reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) in Minnesota using a completely reversible immobilization protocol. Reindeer were immobilized with butorphanol (0.23-0.32 mg/kg), midazolam (0.23-0.32 mg/kg), and medetomidine (0.15 mg/kg) (BMM) via IM dart. Induction time (IT), recumbency time (DT), and recovery time (RT) were recorded. Temperature (T), respiratory rate (RR), pulse rate (PR), pulse oximetry (SpO2), arterial blood gas values including oxygen (PaO2), and carbon dioxide (PaCO2) tensions and lactate (Lac) were recorded preoxygen supplementation and 15 min postoxygen supplementation. Reversal was done using naltrexone (2.3-3.0 mg/kg), flumazenil (0.008-0.01 mg/kg) and atipamezole (0.62-0.78 mg/kg) (NFA) IM, limiting recumbency to 1 h. Median IT, DT, and RT were 5 min, 46 min, and 7 min, respectively. SpO2 (92 to 99%, P = 0.125), PaO2 (45.5 to 97 mmHg, P = 0.25), and PaCO2 (46.5 to 54.6 mmHg, P = 0.25) all increased, whereas Lac (3.02 to 1.93 mmol/L, P = 0.25) decreased between baseline and 15 min postoxygen supplementation, without statistical significance. BMM immobilization, and reversal with NFA provided rapid and effective immobilization and recovery, respectively. Oxygen supplementation mitigated hypoxemia in all reindeer.

Experimental infection of reindeer with cervid herpesvirus 2

Cervid herpesvirus 2 (CvHV2) has been isolated from reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus), and serological data indicate that in reindeer this virus is endemic in Fennoscandia, Alaska, Canada, and Greenland. CvHV2 has been described as a cause of subclinical genital infections in reindeer, but little information on primary infections exists. In this study, six seronegative and presumably pregnant reindeer were allocated to one of two groups. Two animals were inoculated with CvHV2 intratracheally, and two animals intravaginally, with one control animal in each group receiving sterile water. Mild hyperthermia and serous discharges from the vagina and nose were observed. No abortions were recorded, but one calf died shortly after birth. Inoculated animals seroconverted and had neutralizing antibodies after days 7 to 10 postinfection. CvHV2 was detected by PCR in nasal and vaginal swabs from animals in both groups but could be isolated only from nasal swabs in the respiratory group and from vaginal swabs in the genital group. CvHV2 was detected by PCR in various organs and tissues postmortem. In control animals, the virus could not be isolated in spite of PCR-positive nasal and vaginal swab samples and some degree of positive immunostaining. One of the animals that were inoculated intratracheally developed a hemorrhagic, necrotizing bronchopneumonia, which was CvHV2 positive by PCR and immunohistochemistry. We conclude that CvHV2 can cause systemic infection, that both genital and respiratory inoculations can lead to virus shedding, and that the virus can infect the fetus in utero.

COMPARISON OF ETORPHINE–DETOMIDINE AND MEDETOMIDINE–KETAMINE ANESTHESIA IN CAPTIVE ADDAX (ADDAX NASOMACULATUS)

Thirty-five anesthetic events involving 15 captive addax (Addax nasonzaculatus) were performed between August 1998 and February 2002 using a combination of etorphine (33.7 +/- 7.9 microg/kg) and detomidine (21.9 +/- 4.6 microg/ kg) or a combination of medetomidine (57.4 +/- 8.6 microg/kg) and ketamine (1.22 +/- 0.3 microg/kg), with or without supplemental injectable or inhalant anesthetic agents. Etorphine-detomidine anesthesia was antagonized with diprenorphine (107.1 +/- 16.4 microg/kg) and atipamezole (100.9 +/- 42.4 microg/kg). Medetomidine-ketamine anesthesia was antagonized with atipamezole (245.3 +/- 63.4 microg/kg). Animals became recumbent within 5 min when the combination of etorphine and detomidine was used and within 11 min when the combination of medetomidine and ketamine was used. Both drug combinations were suitable for use as primary immobilizing agents producing short-duration restraint and analgesia. Bradycardia was noted with both combinations. Further investigation of the cardiopulmonary effects of both combinations is warranted.
