Abstract
Bone marrow edema (BME) of the hip is a radiological-clinical condition with symptoms ranging from asymptomatic to severe, and it is characterized by increased interstitial fluid within the bone marrow, usually at the femur. Depending on the etiology it can be classified as primary or secondary. The primary cause of BME is unknown, while the secondary forms include traumatic, degenerative, inflammatory, vascular, infectious, metabolic, iatrogenic, and neoplastic etiologies. BME could be classified as reversible or progressive. Reversible forms include transient BME syndrome and regional migratory BME syndrome. Progressive forms include avascular necrosis of the femoral head (AVNH), subchondral insufficiency fracture, and hip degenerative arthritis. The diagnosis can be difficult, because at the beginning, the outbreak of hip pain, typically acute and disabling without any prior trauma or exceptional physical activity, is poorly supported by radiographic findings. MRI is the gold standard, and it shows an area of intermediate signal on T1-weighted MRI scans and a high signal on T2-weighted scans, usually lacking sharps margins. In the reversible form, BME is typically self-limiting, and it can be managed conservatively by means of pharmacological and physical therapy. Surgery is generally required for progressive forms in patients who failed non-operative treatment, and it ranges from femoral head and neck core decompression to total hip arthroplasty.

Abstract
➤ Bone marrow edema (BME) is a nonspecific but relevant finding, usually indicating the presence of an underlying pathology. ➤ The gold standard technique for detecting BME is magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), as it allows for a correct diagnosis to be made, which is extremely important given the heterogeneity of BME-related diseases. ➤ Depending on the severity of painful symptomatology and the MRI evidence, different treatment strategies can be followed: physical modalities, pharmacological options, and surgical therapy.

Abstract
CASE Calcific tendinitis of the gluteus maximus is a rare condition with poorly described operative treatment options. We present a 51-year-old man with chronic left posterolateral hip pain because of gluteus maximus calcific tendinitis that was refractory to conservative treatment. Endoscopy was pursued given the severity and chronicity of his symptoms. The patient remains asymptomatic without recurrence. CONCLUSION This is the first description of endoscopic management of calcific tendinitis of the gluteus maximus. This is a minimally invasive, efficacious option for management of this pathology.

Abstract
Hydroxyapatite deposition disease (HADD) is a mostly uniarticular, self-limiting condition caused by deposition of hydroxyapatite (HA) crystals in tendons or in the peritendinous soft tissues. Commonly, the glenohumeral joint is affected. More rarely, the HA depot can be cause of a carpal tunnel syndrome due to an acute inflammatory reaction and space-occupying soft tissue oedema. We report a case of acute HA depot located at the volar site of the right wrist with affection of the deep flexor tendons and intraosseous migration into the lunate bone in a 50-year-old female. There are two main goals of this case report: First, to remind the diagnosis of HADD as a cause of wrist pain and also of carpal tunnel syndrome, as this entity being often misdiagnosed clinically, and second, to report a rare case of intraosseous migration of HA crystals into the lunate bone.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Calcium hydroxyapatite depositional disease (HADD) is usually asymptomatic and self-limiting; however, when there is an associated inflammatory process or HADD occurs in an unusual location, it may mimic trauma, infection, or neoplasm. The purpose of this article is to review the imaging features of HADD and how to distinguish it from more worrisome entities that can have similar appearances. CONCLUSION An understanding of the presentations of HADD is important to allow early and confident diagnosis. In particular, familiarity with presentations that resemble more ominous pathologies is essential to avoid costly and time-consuming workup or intervention.

Abstract
Rectus femoris muscle proximal injuries are not rare conditions. The proximal rectus femoris tendinous anatomy is complex and may be affected by traumatic, microtraumatic, or nontraumatic disorders. A good knowledge of the proximal rectus femoris anatomy allows a better understanding of injury and disorder patterns. A new sonographic lateral approach was recently described to assess the indirect head of the proximal rectus femoris, hence allowing for a complete sonographic assessment of the proximal rectus femoris tendons. This article will review sonographic features of direct, indirect, and conjoined rectus femoris tendon disorders.

Abstract
Calcium apatite deposition disease (CADD) is a common entity characterized by deposition of calcium apatite crystals within and around connective tissues, usually in a periarticular location. CADD most frequently involves the rotator cuff. However, it can theoretically occur in almost any location in the musculoskeletal system, and many different locations of CADD have been described. When CADD presents in an unexpected location it can pose a diagnostic challenge, particularly when associated with pain or swelling, and can be confused with other pathologic processes, such as infection or malignancy. However, CADD has typical imaging characteristics that usually allows for a correct diagnosis to be made without additional imaging or laboratory workup, even when presenting in unusual locations. This is a review of the common and uncommon presentations of CADD in the appendicular and axial skeleton as well as an updated review of pathophysiology of CADD and current treatments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although the natural history of calcific tendinitis within the rotator cuff of the shoulder is established, the natural history of calcific tendinitis around the hip joint remains unknown. PURPOSE To examine the duration of symptoms including pain, the location of calcific tendinitis around the hip joint, the radiologic course of calcium phosphate crystals, and the proportion of patients who required surgical treatment. STUDY DESIGN Case series; Level of evidence, 4. METHODS Thirty hips (29 patients) with acute calcific tendinitis were treated between January 2010 and December 2012. Level of subjective hip pain using the visual analog scale pain score, radiologic type, and the location and size of calcium deposits were measured during a follow-up period of 12 to 32 months. RESULTS The 29 patients included 7 men (24%) and 22 women (76%) with a mean age of 51.5 years (range, 28-78 years). All visual analog scale pain scores significantly improved from a mean of 7.1 to 0.8 at the latest follow-up (P < .001). The most common site of calcium deposition was the tendon of the gluteus medius. During follow-up, calcium deposition completely resolved in 5 of 20 hips. Symptoms in 23 patients (24 hips) responded to nonoperative treatment. Two patients (2 hips) were treated with ultrasound-guided local anesthetic and steroid injection. Four patients (4 hips) with long duration (>3 months) of severe pain, solid type, and large size (range, 96-416 mm(2)) were treated with arthroscopic excision. CONCLUSION Nonoperative treatment in patients with acute calcific tendinitis of the hip joint might be successful in most patients. Surgical treatment is of value for patients experiencing prolonged severe pain, solid type, and large size.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Calcific periarthritis, referring to a circumscribed juxta-articular deposit of minute non-birefringent mineral grains, is rarely the clinical diagnosis accompanying a pathologic specimen. Familiarity with the clinical, pathologic, and radiologic manifestations of calcific periarthritis, particularly when encountered adjacent to joints other than the shoulder, facilitates diagnosis and may obviate biopsy, avoid confusion with other entities, and speed appropriate treatment. METHODS Pathologic specimens that fulfilled the criteria for a diagnosis of calcific periarthritis were prospectively collected. Clinical history and radiologic studies were acquired and analyzed. Well-controlled special stains were employed on two specimens with a neutrophilic infiltrate that excluded fungal and bacterial agents, as corroborated by microbiologic cultures showing no growth. RESULTS Over a five-year period, fifteen patients between the ages of thirty-one and eighty-eight years (mean age, fifty-nine years) presented to various local healthcare providers for treatment of juxta-articular swelling that was subsequently determined to be calcific periarthritis. In seven patients, deposits were alongside a toe joint; in five, alongside a finger joint; and in three, involving the shoulder. The majority of the patients were female (73%). No patient had a documented recurrence of calcific periarthritis in follow-up periods ranging from eighteen to eighty-seven months (average forty-five months). CONCLUSIONS Of twelve histologically verified cases of calcific periarthritis adjacent to joints other than the shoulder, in only one patient (toe) was the preoperative clinical diagnosis accurate, which signals the need for greater awareness of this entity as a differential diagnostic option.

Abstract
Destructive arthropathy of the hip joint can be attributed to various etiologies like rheumatoid arthritis, aseptic necrosis of the femur head, Charcot's joint, subacute septic arthritis, and tubercular arthritis. A disease that results in much rapid destruction of the hip joint and is not associated with clinical syndrome of above mentioned disease has been reported way back in 1970. However, no evidence-based study has been published to support hydroxyapatite (HA) crystals as a probable cause of rapidly destructive arthropathy of the hip joint. We report a case with microscopic and biochemical confirmation of HA crystal deposition causing destructive arthropathy of the hip joint.

Abstract
Hydroxyapatite (HA) crystal deposition disease is a common cause of acute inflammatory articular or periarticular pain. Here we report a patient with an acute hip arthritis due to HA crystal deposition of the round ligament. Therefore, HA crystal deposition in periarticular tendons and ligaments of the hip should be added to the differential diagnosis of an acute hip arthritis. Computed tomographic scan may be useful when standard radiographs do not evidence the calcification.
