Abstract
Dance-based interventions have been proposed for the management of Parkinson's disease (PD) symptoms. This review critically appraises and synthesises the research on the effects of dance interventions on gait, cognition and dual-tasking in PD, through a meta-analysis of peer-reviewed literature from seven databases. Eligible studies included people with PD, used a parallel-group or cohort design with a dance-based intervention, reported outcome measures of gait, cognition or dual-tasking, and were published in English up until September 2017. Of the initial 1079 articles, 677 articles were reviewed for eligibility, and 25 articles were retained. Only 12 articles had sufficient common assessment items for meta-analysis. Two independent reviewers extracted the data and assessed the risk of bias of each study using the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool. Based on pre-post change scores, gait speed, Timed Up and Go (TUG) test performance, freezing of gait questionnaire, and six-minute walk test times significantly improved after a dance intervention compared to controls. Global cognition assessed with Montreal Cognitive Assessment, and cognitive dual-tasking measured using dual-task TUG, also exhibited greater improvement in dance groups. There was limited evidence to determine the most effective intensity, frequency, duration of dance interventions or the most beneficial music. Findings must be interpreted cautiously because of the lack of randomised control trials, and the moderate to high risk of bias of studies. However, the results of papers with level-I and level-II.1 evidence suggest that dance may have the potential to ameliorate PD symptoms, particularly gait, global cognition and cognitive dual-tasking.

Abstract
Although movement has long been recognized as expressing emotion and as an agent of change for emotional state, there was a dearth of scientific evidence specifying which aspects of movement influence specific emotions. The recent identification of clusters of Laban movement components which elicit and enhance the basic emotions of anger, fear, sadness and happiness indicates which types of movements can affect these emotions (Shafir et al., 2016), but not how best to apply this knowledge. This perspective paper lays out a conceptual groundwork for how to effectively use these new findings to support emotional resiliency through voluntary choice of one's posture and movements. We suggest that three theoretical principles from Laban Movement Analysis (LMA) can guide the gradual change in movement components in one's daily movements to somatically support shift in affective state: (A) Introduce new movement components in developmental order; (B) Use LMA affinities-among-components to guide the expansion of expressive movement range and (C) Sequence change among components based on Laban's Space Harmony theory to support the gradual integration of that new range. The methods postulated in this article have potential to foster resiliency and provide resources for self-efficacy by expanding our capacity to adapt emotionally to challenges through modulating our movement responses.

Abstract
Although preliminary evidence supports the psychophysical benefits of dance for adults with Parkinson disease, guidelines for community-based dance programs await further scrutiny for safety and efficacy. This pilot study was designed to assess the feasibility of an intensive trial of group-delivered modern dance for 11 adults with early-to-middle stage Parkinson’s. The Timed ‘‘Up and Go’’ test and the Fullerton Advanced Balance scale were administered to assess balance safety and re-administered at closure along with a self-reported feedback questionnaire. Video recordings were analyzed for qualitative behavioral change. Pre/posttest comparisons from the Timed ‘‘Up and Go’’ test were not significant, while those from the Fullerton Advanced Balance Scale were significant at the .05 level for the group as a whole (p = .01) with an average score change of +3.1 points. Although qualitative results generally concurred with the social benefits associated with an enjoyable form of expressive exercise, important indicators surfaced bearing on future research and community program designs. These include need for more rigorous stratification of participants and adapting dance class structure to address specific group needs to promote motor learning for sustained functional gains.

Abstract
Human dance was investigated with positron emission tomography to identify its systems-level organization. Three core aspects of dance were examined: entrainment, meter and patterned movement. Amateur dancers performed small-scale, cyclically repeated tango steps on an inclined surface to the beat of tango music, without visual guidance. Entrainment of dance steps to music, compared to self-pacing of movement, was supported by anterior cerebellar vermis. Movement to a regular, metric rhythm, compared to movement to an irregular rhythm, implicated the right putamen in the voluntary control of metric motion. Spatial navigation of leg movement during dance, when controlling for muscle contraction, activated the medial superior parietal lobule, reflecting proprioceptive and somatosensory contributions to spatial cognition in dance. Finally, additional cortical, subcortical and cerebellar regions were active at the systems level. Consistent with recent work on simpler, rhythmic, motor-sensory behaviors, these data reveal the interacting network of brain areas active during spatially patterned, bipedal, rhythmic movements that are integrated in dance.
