The Relevance of Operant Behavior in Conceptualizing the Psychological Well-Being of Captive Animals

The term "psychological well-being" is used in reference to husbandry with animals in human care settings such as research, agriculture, and zoos. This article seeks to clarify and conceptualize the term based upon two approaches that draw from several bodies of literature: the experimental analysis of behavior, experimental psychology, animal welfare and husbandry, farm animal behavior, zoo husbandry, and ethology. One approach focuses on the presence of problem behavior such as stereotypies, depressive-like behavior, and aggression, and emphasizes the conditions under which aberrant behavior in animals under human care occurs. The second approach examines what might be considered wellness by emphasizing opportunities to engage with its environment, or the absence of such opportunities, even if problematic behavior is not exhibited. Here, access to an interactive environment is relatively limited so opportunities for operant (voluntary) behavior could be considered. Designing for operant behavior provides opportunities for variability in both behavior and outcomes. Operant behavior also provides control over the environment, a characteristic that has been a core assumption of well-being. The importance of interactions with one's environment is especially evident in observations that animals prefer opportunities to work for items necessary for sustenance, such as food, over having them delivered freely. These considerations raise the importance of operant behavior to psychological well-being, especially as benefits to animals under human care.

Psychometric properties of the Adulthood Trauma Inventory

OBJECTIVE

Psychological trauma is an important public health problem, but previous measurement tools have primarily focused on childhood traumatic events while trauma exposure in adulthood (>18 years of age) has received less attention. The purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of an instrument for assessment of psychological trauma in adulthood, the Adulthood Trauma Inventory (ATI).

METHOD

Participants (n = 893) completed the ATI, a 33-item questionnaire modeled after the Early Trauma Inventory-Self Report (ETI-SR), assessing traumatic events occurring after 18 years of age. Participants also completed instruments to assess depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and early trauma (ETI-SR). Internal consistency and item response theory metrics were examined.

RESULTS

ATI total score (number of items endorsed) yielded the greatest internal consistency (Cronbach's α = .77) and was significantly (p < .0001) correlated with indices of PTSD (ρ = 0.40), depression (ρ = 0.31), and early trauma (ρ = 0.56). Area under the curve and accuracy values ranged from 0.65 and 70% (depression) to 0.75 and 95% (current PTSD).

CONCLUSIONS

The ATI is a valid measure of adult psychological trauma that may be useful for both clinical assessment and research involving the long-term effects on the individual and psychobiology. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2020 APA, all rights reserved).

The Mental Stress Ischemia Prognosis Study: Objectives, Study Design, and Prevalence of Inducible Ischemia

OBJECTIVE

Mental stress-induced myocardial ischemia (MSIMI) is a common phenomenon in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD), but contemporary studies of its prognostic significance and its underlying pathophysiology are limited.

METHODS

We prospectively enrolled patients with confirmed CAD in the Mental Stress Ischemia Prognosis Study (MIPS) between 2011 and 2014. All patients underwent mental stress testing using a standardized public speaking task, and ischemia was detected by Tc-sestamibi myocardial perfusion imaging. Patients also underwent conventional stress testing for myocardial ischemia (CSIMI) using exercise or pharmacological stress testing. Furthermore, digital microvascular flow, endothelial function, arterial stiffness, and blood sample collections were performed before, during, and after mental stress. Two-year adverse clinical outcomes are being assessed.

RESULTS

Six-hundred ninety-five patients completed baseline enrollment in the MIPS. Their mean (standard deviation) age was 62.9 (9.1) years, 72% were men, 30% were African American, and 32% had a history myocardial infarction. The prevalence of MSIMI and CSIMI is 16.1% and 34.7%, respectively. A total of 151 patients (22.9%) had only CSIMI, 28 (4.2%) had only MSIMI, and 78 (11.8%) had both MSIMI and CSIMI. Patients with ischemia had a lower ejection fraction and higher prevalence of previous coronary artery bypass grafting compared with those without inducible ischemia (p < .050). The prevalence of obstructive CAD was not statistically different between patients with and without MSIMI (p = .426); in contrast, it was higher in patients with CSIMI (p < .001).

CONCLUSIONS

The MIPS data will provide useful information to assess the prognostic significance and underlying mechanisms of MSIMI.

Psychometric properties of instruments for assessing depression among African youth: A systematic review

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to systematically review the psychometric properties of instruments used to screen for major depressive disorder or assess depression symptom severity among African youth.

METHODS

Systematic search terms were applied to seven bibliographic databases: African Journals Online, the African Journal Archive, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Embase, the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), PsycINFO, and the World Health Organization (WHO) African Index Medicus. Studies examining the reliability and/or validity of depression assessment tools were selected for inclusion if they were based on data collected from youth (any author definition) in an African member state of the United Nations. We extracted data on study population characteristics, sampling strategy, sample size, the instrument assessed, and the type of reliability and/or validity evidence provided.

RESULTS

Of 1 027 records, we included 23 studies of 10 499 youth in 10 African countries. Most studies reported excellent scale reliability, but there was much less evidence of equivalence or criterion-related validity. No measures were validated in more than two countries.

CONCLUSIONS

There is a paucity of evidence on the reliability or validity of depression assessment among African youth. The field is constrained by a lack of established criterion standards, but studies incorporating mixed methods offer promising strategies for guiding the process of cross-cultural development and validation.
