Influence of Drying Temperature on the Content of Bioactive Compounds in Scots Pine ( Pinus sylvestris L.) Shoots as Well as Yield and Composition of Essential Oils

Edible coating enriched with cinnamon oil reduces the oxidative stress and improves the quality of strawberry fruit stored at room temperature

BACKGROUND

The present study aimed to assess the impact of a starch/gelatine coating containing cinnamon oil on selected quality attributes and redox status in strawberry fruit stored at room temperature (72 h).

RESULTS

Research showed that the application of cinnamon oil to an edible coating allows an improvement of the quality of strawberry fruit stored at room temperature. The cinnamon oil coating inhibits the development of yeast and mould, and reduces loss of soluble solids and ascorbic acid during 72 h storage at room temperature. Moreover, the coating with cinnamon oil clearly reduced the level of oxidative stress, which was manifested by a lower level of reactive oxygen species, as well as a lower activity of antioxidant enzymes. The elimination of oxidative stress in the cinnamon oil-coated fruit also contributed to lower PARP1 mRNA expression, inhibiting the metabolism of NAD⁺ and reducing ATP losses.

CONCLUSION

The coating of strawberry fruit with a starch/gelatine biofilm containing cinnamon oil is an effective method for delaying postharvest senescence of fruit and the storage degradation of tissue. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

A Comparative Analysis of Different Varietal of Fresh and Dried Figs by In Vitro Bioaccessibility of Phenolic Compounds and Antioxidant Activities

Varietal and sun-drying effects on phenolic compounds and their antioxidant activity were investigated during the in vitro gastrointestinal digestion of fresh and dried figs. The total phenolic compounds (phenolic, flavonoids, and proanthocyanidin) and their antioxidant activity (ferric reducing power; free radical scavenging activity DPPH, and phosphomolybdenum test) were evaluated before and after digestion. The total phenolic compounds and the antioxidant capacities of fresh and dried figs obtained before digestion were significantly (p < 0.05) higher than those obtained after digestion. A significant decrease (p < 0.05) of phenolic compounds and their antioxidant activity was observed during different digestion phases (oral phase > gastric phase > intestinal phase). A positive correlation was found between the total phenolic compounds and the antioxidant activity tested for both fresh and dried figs. Furthermore, the results showed that the digestion has no effect on the total phenolic compounds; however, a negative influence of the pH and the enzymes was observed on these compounds and their antioxidant activity. During in vitro gastrointestinal digestion, the varietal and the sun-drying has no significant effect on the phenolic compounds and their antioxidant activity. Likewise, the fresh or dry variety kept a high content before and after the digestion.

Impact of Ozonation Process on the Content of Bioactive Compounds with Antioxidant Properties in Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) Shoots as Well as Yield and Composition of Essential Oils

This study examined the impact of the ozonation procedure on the content of bioactive compounds in young shoots of Pinus sylvestris L. as well as on the yield and the composition of the essential oils and volatile fraction. The ozonation process consisted of exposure of the raw material during 5, 15 and 30 min to the ozone gas with the concentration of 10 and 100 ppm, and then it was stored for 24 hours. In the ozonated pine shoots, the content of vitamin C overall content of polyphenol content and antioxidant potential were determined. It was found that the investigated parameters increased as a result of the utilized procedure. The observed increase in the content of tested bioactive compounds was dependent on exposition time and was found to be highest for ozonated material for 15 min with ozone gas at a concentration of 10 ppm. As a result of the ozonation procedure the content of polyphenolic compounds and vitamin C content increased. Whereas it, did not have a significant effect on composition of the obtained essential oils. It was found that ozone is an effective elicitor, which allows increasing the content of bioactive compounds in pine shoots.

Effects of Ozone Treatment on Microbial Status and the Contents of Selected Bioactive Compounds in Origanum majorana L. Plants

This study presents the effects of ozone treatment on microbial status and contents of selected bioactive compounds in marjoram plants. Origanum majorana L. is a widely used plant which in the course of production is affected by microbial infections. One of the ways to reduce microbial load involves application of a strong oxidant, such as ozone. In order to determine the effects of ozonation, a number of analyses were carried out including microbiological tests (aerobic colony count, yeast and mould count, and mesophilic lactic acid bacteria count) and chemical tests assessing total antioxidant potential, total polyphenols, and volatile fraction composition. Ultimately, the findings showed considerable (6-log) reduction in microbial load, with unchanged composition of headspace volatile compounds. Furthermore, the raw material obtained presented elevated the contents of the selected bioactive compounds. It was shown that the most beneficial effects are achieved when ozone treatment is applied at a rate of 1 ppm for a duration of 10 min.

Ozone Treatment as a Process of Quality Improvement Method of Rhubarb (Rheum rhaponticum L.) Petioles during Storage

The aim of the study was to identify the effects of ozone treatment reflected by the microbial, mechanical properties and selected chemical parameters during the storage of rhubarb petioles. For this purpose, after they were harvested, rhubarb petioles were treated with gaseous ozone at concentrations of 10 and 100 ppm, for the duration of 5, 15 and 30 min. Subsequently, the plant material was stored at room temperature for 14 days. After this time, the raw material was subjected to a number of chemical and mechanical tests. It was shown that the rhubarb petioles treated with ozone at a rate of 100 ppm for 30 min were characterized by the lowest loss of water content. It was also found that, compared to the control, most samples subjected to ozone treatment presented better mechanical properties, as well as higher oxidative potential and contents of polyphenols and vitamin C. Based on these findings, it was determined that ozone treatment largely increases storage stability of rhubarb.
