On the Selection of Excitation Signals for the Fast Spectroscopy of Electrical Bioimpedance

Split electrodes for electrical-conductivity-based tissue discrimination

This work presents a method to minimize the inadvertent cutting of tissues in surgeries involving bone drilling. We present electrical impedance measurements as an assistive technology to image-guided surgery to achieve online guidance. Proposed concept is to identify and localize the landmarks via impedance measurements and then use this information to superimpose the estimated drilling trajectory on the offline maps obtained by pre-operative imaging. To this end., we propose an asymmetric electrode geometry., split electrodes., capable of distinguishing impedance variations as a function of rotation angle. The feasibility of the proposed approach is verified with numerical analysis. A probe with stainless steel electrodes has been fabricated and tested with a technical phantom. Although the results are impacted by a non-ideality in the phantom., we could show that the variation of impedance as a function of rotation angle can be used to localize the regions with different impedivities. Clinical Relevance- Presented approach may be used to minimize the inadvertent cutting of tissues in surgeries involving bone drilling.

Numerical Evaluation of Complex Capacitance Measurement Using Pulse Excitation in Electrical Capacitance Tomography

Electrical capacitance tomography (ECT) is a technique of imaging the distribution of permittivity inside an object under test. Capacitance is measured between the electrodes surrounding the object, and the image is reconstructed from these data by solving the inverse problem. Although both sinusoidal excitation and pulse excitation are used in the sensing circuit, only the AC method is used to measure both components of complex capacitance. In this article, a novel method of complex capacitance measurement using pulse excitation is proposed for ECT. The real and imaginary components are calculated from digital samples of the integrator response. A pulse shape in the front-end circuit was analyzed using the Laplace transform. The numerical simulations of the electric field inside the imaging volume as well as simulations of a pulse excitation in the front-end circuit were performed. The calculation of real and imaginary components using digital samples of the output signal was verified. The permittivity and conductivity images reconstructed for the test object were presented. The method enables imaging of permittivity and conductivity spatial distributions using capacitively coupled electrodes and may be an alternative measurement method for ECT as well as for electrical impedance tomography.

Multichannel Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy Analyzer with Microfluidic Sensors

Impedance spectroscopy is a common approach in assessing passive electrical properties of biological matter. However, several problems appear in microfluidic devices in connection with the requirement for high sensitivity of signal acquisition from small volume sensors. The developed compact and inexpensive analyzer provides impedance spectroscopy measurement from three sensors, both connected in direct and differential modes. Measurement deficiencies are reduced with a novel design of sensors, measurement method, optimized electronics, signal processing, and mechanical design of the analyzer. Proposed solutions are targeted to the creation of reliable point-of-care (POC) diagnostic and monitoring appliances, including lab-on-a-chip type devices in the next steps of development. The test results show the good working ability of the developed analyzer; however, also limitations and problems that require attention and further improvement are appointed.
