Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the potential effect of ultrasound-guided stellate ganglion block (SGB) on lung protection for patients undergoing one-lung ventilation (OLV). METHODS A total of 123 patients undergoing elective one-lung ventilation surgery were selected as research subjects in this prospective study. These patients were randomly divided into the SGB group, control group and blank group on average. Stellate ganglion block was carried out in the SGB and control groups. Patients in the SGB group were injected with 6 ml mixture of 0.25% ropivacaine hydrochloride and 1% lidocaine hydrochloride, while those in the control group were injected with 6 mL of 0.9% saline. Punctures weren't performed for patients in the blank group. The same induction and maintenance of general anesthesia was adopted for all three groups. Hemodynamics, respiratory parameters and arterial blood gas analysis were recorded after entering the operation room (T0), pre-OLV (T1), 30 min after OLV (T2), 60 min after OLV (T3), at the end of surgery (T4), and 30 min after extubation (T5). Oxygenation index (OI), pulmonary shunt fraction (Qs/Qt) and pH value were compared at different time points. Intravenous serum was collected at T0, T3 and T5 for the detection of surfactant proteins A (SP-A), superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-10 (IL-10) levels, respectively. The complications related to SGB after surgery and the postoperative pulmonary complications within 72 h were recorded. RESULTS At T1, T2, and T3, MAP level in SGB group was lower than that in blank and control groups (P<0.05). At T2, and T3, SGB group had lower hear rate (HR), peak airway pressure (Ppeak) and tidal volume (TV) than blank and control groups (all P<0.05). From T2 to T5, SGB group had higher OI but lower Qs/Qt than blank and control groups (both P<0.05). At T3 and T5, SGB group had lower SP-A, IL-6, and MDA levels but higher IL-10 and SOD levels than blank and control groups (all P<0.05). There was one case of hypoxemia in the blank group within 72 h after surgery. CONCLUSION Ultrasound-guided SGB has lung-protective effects on patients undergoing OLV, which significantly improves patients' OI, reduces intrapulmonary shunts, declines ventilator-induced lung damage, and inhibits inflammatory response as well as oxidative stress (China Clinical Trial Registry, registration number ChiCTR2000033385, https://www.chictr.org.cn).

Abstract
Breast cancer (BrC) is a highly prevalent tumour among women. The high incidence and mortality rate of BrC prompts researchers to search for new markers that will provide information on the possible impact of the therapy on the risk of cancer-related events. This study aimed to investigate whether the level of advanced oxidation protein products (AOPPs) may have a potential impact on disease-free (DFS) and overall survival (OS) in BrC patients with early-stage cancer. Additionally, we tried to assess the relationship between AOPPs and angiogenic parameters. In this study, the pre- and post-treatment AOPP levels were examined in the serum of 70 newly diagnosed BrC women. The receiver operating characteristic curve identified pre- and post-treatment AOPPs to be above 9.37 μM and 10.39 μM, respectively, as the best cut-off values to predict the risk of cancer relapse. Additionally, Kaplan-Meier survival analysis indicated that pre- and post-treatment AOPPs above 9.37 μM and 10.39 μM were associated with significantly poorer OS. The uni- and multivariate Cox regression analysis highlighted that lower levels of pre- and post-treatment AOPPs were associated with a longer duration without relapse or cancer-related death. A positive correlation between concentrations of pre-treatment AOPPs and vascular endothelial growth factor A, and negative correlations with levels of soluble forms of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor type 1 and 2, were found. In conclusion, AOPPs appear to have an important role in predicting cancer-related events and may potentially serve as a simple prognostic marker in clinical practice.

Assessment of MDA and 8-OHdG expressions in ovine pulmonary adenocarcinomas by immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence methods. ACTA VET BRNO 2022. Abstract
This study aimed to reveal the presence of reactive oxygen species (ROS)-induced lipid peroxidation and DNA damage in ovine pulmonary adenocarcinomas (OPA) by evaluating malondialdehyde (MDA) and 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) expressions by immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence methods. Lung tissue samples were collected from 26 sheep brought to the Pathology Department for routine diagnosis. Lung tissues were fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin, following routine procedures tissues were stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Avidin-Biotin Peroxidase method was used as immunohistochemical staining. Indirect immunofluorescence method was applied to the sections. Tumoral cells showed acinar, papillary or mixed type patterns. Only 2 of 20 cases metastasized to regional lymph nodes. All OPAs were immune positive for Jaagsiekte Sheep Retrovirus Capsid Protein (JSRV CA), MDA and 8-OHdG. The control group was negative for JSRV CA, MDA and 8-OHdG expressions. Malondialdehyde and 8-OHdG immune positive cells were statistically increased in the OPA group compared to the control group. In conclusion, our results demonstrate that higher MDA and 8-OHdG expressions in sheep with OPA suggest that OPA may be closely related to lipid peroxidation and oxidative DNA damage.

Abstract
Redox status disturbances are known during carcinogenesis and may have influence on patients' survival. However, the prediction of mortality in lung cancer patients based on serum total SOD activity, and concentrations of its isoforms, has not been studied to date. This prospective cohort study has following aims: (1) to evaluate the disturbances in serum SOD activity and SOD1/2 concentrations; (2) to assess the implications of these alterations with regard to biochemical variables and clinical data, and (3) to investigate the association between serum SOD activity, SOD1/2 concentrations, and all-cause mortality in lung cancer patients. Serum total SOD activity and SOD1, SOD2, albumin, CRP, and ceruloplasmin concentrations were determined in lung cancer patients (n = 190) and control subjects (n = 52). Additionally, patients were characterized in terms of biochemical, clinical, and sociodemographic data. Multiple Cox regression models were used to estimate the association between all-cause death and SOD-related parameters. All-cause mortality in lung cancer was positively associated with serum SOD1 and SOD2 concentrations. Clinical stage III and IV disease was the strongest predictor. The utility of the evaluated parameters in predicting overall survival was demonstrated only for SOD1. Serum SOD1 and SOD2 concentrations were shown to positively affect all-cause mortality in lung cancer patients, but SOD1 seems to be a better predictor than SOD2.

Abstract
The determination of biomarkers in the blood specific for lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) and lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC) is crucial for the selection of effective treatment strategies and the prediction of prognosis. The purpose of the present study was to analyze the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in LUSC and LUAD from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. In order to identify the potential biomarkers for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) for clinical diagnosis, bioinformatics was used to analyze the DEGs of two subtypes of NSCLC, LUAD and LUSC. Exosomes were isolated from the serum of patients with LUAD or LUSC and identified using transmission electron microscopy, nanoparticle tracking analysis and western blot analysis. A total of four differential exosomal mRNAs were selected for validation with serum samples from 70 patients with NSCLC via reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Receiver operating characteristic curves were established to evaluate the clinical diagnostic value of four DEGs for patients with LUAD and LUSC. The analysis based on TCGA data revealed the DEGs in LUSC and LUAD: A total of 1,619 genes were differentially expressed in patients with LUSC and LUAD. DEGs analyzed by Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes enrichment analyses revealed that inflammation-related signaling pathways, such as complement pathways, and multiple autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus and asthma were mainly enriched in LUAD. The cell cycle, Hippo signaling pathway, Rap1 signaling pathway and Wnt signaling pathway were the main signaling pathways enriched in LUSC. The combination of tumor protein P63 (TP63), keratin 5 (KRT5), CEA cell adhesion molecule 6 (CEACAM6) and surfactant protein B (SFTPB) improved the specificity and sensitivity in the diagnosis of different lung cancer subtypes. Exosomal TP63, KRT5, CEACAM6 and SFTPB mRNAs can thus be used as biomarkers to differentiate between LUSC and LUAD, and may provide a novel strategy for their differential diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract
AIM Preparation of pegylated gold nanorods (PEG-AuNRs) that are capable of converting near infrared (NIR) light into heat. Evaluation of cancer therapeutic efficacy and long-term toxicity of the proposed photothermal therapy in comparison with other conventional modalities. MATERIALS AND METHODS Prepared PEG-AuNRs were characterized by measuring their absorption spectra, zeta potential, and transmission electron microscope (TEM). Cancer therapeutic efficacy was assessed by monitoring tumor growth, measuring DNA damage and superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in addition to examining tumor histopathology. Further analysis concerning the toxicity of all the proposed treatment modalities was also assessed by evaluating the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity in liver and kidney tissues. KEY FINDINGS The results demonstrated that both photothermal therapy (PEG-AuNRs + NIR laser) and chemotherapy (cisplatin) have higher efficacy in diminishing Ehrlich tumor growth with significance DNA damage over the other treatment modalities. Concerning the biosafety issue, mice treated photothermally exhibited lower MDA level and higher SOD activity in liver and kidney tissues compared with other treated groups. DNA damage represented by tail moment and olive moment of kidney tissues exhibited lower values for photothermal treated group and higher values for cisplatin treated group. SIGNIFICANCE Photothermal therapy (PEG-AuNRs + NIR laser) potentiates higher efficacy in treating Ehrlich tumor with minimum toxicity in comparison with other conventional treatment modalities.

Abstract
Lung cancer is a type of malignant tumor with high morbidity and mortality. Due to its complicated etiology and clinical manifestations, no significant therapeutic advance has been made. Lung squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) is the most common type of lung cancer. To combat this disease, novel therapeutic targets are badly requirement. ASPM (Abnormal spindle-like microcephaly-associated protein) is involved in multiple cellular or developmental processes, such as neurogenesis and brain growth. ASPM is also reported widely expressed in multiple tumor tissues and involved in the development and progression of several cancers including lung cancer. However, the potential role on ASPM on LSCC is still unclear. In this study, we reported that ASPM was related to the poor prognosis of patients with lung squamous cell carcinoma. Our results further showed that ASPM depletion dramatically inhibited the proliferation of LSCC cells, consistent with the obviously decreased of cyclin D1(CCND1) and cyclin dependent kinases 4 (CDK4) expression. In vivo assays further confirmed ASPM ablation markedly blocked tumor growth in vivo compared with control. In addition, a co-expression was found between ASPM and CDK4 in human tumor tissues. Taken together, our data provides strong evidence that ASPM promotes lung squamous cell carcinoma proliferation in vitro and in vivo, and indicates its potential role as a LSCC therapeutic target.

Abstract
Lung tissue is directly exposed to high oxygen pressure, as well as increased endogenous and exogenous oxidative stress. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated in these conditions play an important role in the initiation and promotion of neoplastic growth. In response to oxidative stress, the antioxidant activity increases and minimizes ROS-induced injury in experimental systems. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the activity of antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD; isoforms: Cu/ZnSOD and MnSOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR), and glutathione S-transferase (GST), along with the concentration of malondialdehyde (MDA) in tumor and adjacent noncancerous tissues of two histological types of NSCLC, i.e., adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, collected from 53 individuals with surgically resectable NSCLC. MDA concentration was similar in tumors compared with adjacent noncancerous tissues. Tumor cells had low MnSOD activity, usually low Cu/ZnSOD activity, and almost always low catalase activity compared with those of the corresponding tumor-free lung tissues. Activities of GSH-related enzymes were significantly higher in tumor tissues, irrespective of the histological type of cancer. This pattern of antioxidant enzymes activity could possibly be the way by which tumor cells protect themselves against increased oxidative stress.
