There Is No Relationship Between Lower Extremity Alignment During Unilateral and Bilateral Drop Jumps and the Risk of Knee or Ankle Injury: A Prospective Study

BACKGROUND

Improper body mechanics during landing is a typical risk factor of anterior cruciate ligament injury. Drop landing test is used to evaluate landing mechanics by observing not only successful trials but also failed trials. Leaning of the trunk, which is frequently observed during failed trials, may lead to improper body mechanics related to anterior cruciate ligament injury. This study aimed to elucidate the mechanisms of landing with trunk lean that may underlie the risks of anterior cruciate ligament injury by comparing body mechanics between failed and successful trials.

METHODS

Participants were 72 female basketball athletes. The athletic task was single-leg medial drop landing, and the body mechanics was recorded by a motion capture system and force plate. Participants fixed the landing pose for ≥3 s in successful trials but failed to do so in failed trials.

FINDINGS

Failed trials included the large lean of trunk. There were significant changes in thoracic and pelvic leans at initial contact in failed trials with medial trunk lean (p < 0.05). Kinematics and kinetics during the landing phase in failed trials were associated with the risks of anterior cruciate ligament injury.

INTERPRETATION

These findings suggest that landing mechanics with trunk lean involves many biomechanical factors related to anterior cruciate ligament injury and demonstrates the inappropriate pose of trunk from the dropping phase. Exercise programs aimed at the landing manoeuver without trunk lean may contribute to reduce the risks of anterior cruciate ligament injury in female basketball athletes.

Evaluation of Application Effect of Self-Made Compression Cold Therapy in Postoperative Rehabilitation of Patients with Orthopedic Dyskinesia

With the accelerated aging of the population, orthopedic injuries have become more collective. Among them, the incidence of ankle fractures remains high. Surgery is an effective way to treat ankle fractures by utilizing special surgical site, complex anatomical structure, and specific surgical methods. With surgical approach, it is easy for basis postoperative blood loss, pain, swelling, and other problems. After surgery, most patients suffer from symptoms of fear, increased pain sensitivity, and excessive irrational concerns about physical movement or activity. Compression cold therapy combines cold therapy with air pressure therapy to ease local exudation, constrict blood vessels, improve circulation, relieve pain, and control inflammation through the effects of low temperature and pressure. Application during the rehabilitation period can prevent joint swelling, reduce muscle soreness, and promote the functional recovery of limbs, which provides an effective guarantee for postoperative rehabilitation of patients with orthopedic dyskinesia. Based on this, it is very important to evaluate the application and effect of self-made compression cold therapy in postoperative rehabilitation of patients with orthopedic dyskinesia. This work proposes a one-dimensional deep convolutional neural network-based method; DenseNet for analyzing the rehabilitation effect of patients with orthopedic dyskinesia after ankle fracture surgery. The approach is to evaluate the rehabilitation effect of self-made compression cold therapy from the perspectives of feature reuse, attention mechanism, and feature decoupling. Experiments on the dataset show that the proposed neural network has better efficacy evaluation performance. The proposed systematic assessment based on the emerging deep learning network has great significance in healthcare domain, particularly in assessing applicability, side effects, and noninvasiveness of treatment methods.

Early Warning of Basketball Injury Risk Based on Attribute Reduction Algorithm

Basketball is one of the students' favorite ball games, and it is also one of the most popular sports for college students to carry out after class. Especially in recent years, with the spread of NBA culture around the world and the extensive development of CUBA in domestic colleges and universities, Yao Ming has appeared in China to compete in the NBA and achieve brilliant achievements. With the increasing investment in the number of basketball venues, basketball itself, as a sport with low dependence on venues, equipment, and people, has the characteristics of economy, convenience, and remarkable sports effect compared with other sports. College students' basketball skills, basketball awareness, and love for basketball are increasing day by day. Attribute reduction algorithm is one of the core contents of knowledge discovery, which describes whether every attribute in the attribute set of information system is necessary and how to delete unnecessary knowledge. Based on the attribute reduction algorithm, this paper studies the early warning of basketball injury risk. The basketball injury can not only make athletes unable to participate in training or competition, but even cripple or lose their lives, which hinders the normal development of sports. Therefore, we should make a comprehensive and objective analysis of sports training to find out the causes of sports injuries, so as to prevent sports injuries. This algorithm takes the attribute frequency as the heuristic information and solves the attribute selection problem when the attribute frequency is the same.

Association Between Markerless Motion Capture Screenings and Musculoskeletal Injury Risk for Military Trainees: A Large Cohort and Reliability Study

Background:

Markerless motion capture (MMC) systems used to screen for musculoskeletal injury (MSKI) risk have become popular in military and collegiate athletic settings. However, little is known regarding the test-retest reliability or, more importantly, the ability of these systems to accurately identify individuals at risk for MSKI.

Purpose:

To determine the association between scores from a proprietary MMC movement screen test and the likelihood of suffering a subsequent MSKI and establish the test-retest reliability of the MMC system used.

Study Design:

Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3.

Methods:

Trainees for the Air Force Special Warfare program underwent MMC screenings immediately before entering the 8-week training course. MSKI data were extracted from a database for the surveillance period for each trainee. Logistic regression analyses were performed to identify associations between baseline MMC scores and the likelihood of suffering any MSKI or, specifically, a lower extremity MSKI. The test-retest portion of the study collected MMC scores from 10 separate participants performing 4 trials of the standard test procedures. Reliability was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients by a single rater.

Results:

Overall, 1570 trainees, of whom 800 (51%) suffered an MSKI, were included in the analysis. MMC scores poorly predicted the likelihood of any or a lower extremity MSKI (odds ratio, 1.01-1.02). Further, receiver operating characteristic curve analyses demonstrated poor sensitivity and specificity for prediction of MSKI with MMC scores (area under the curve = 0.53). Finally, intraclass correlation coefficients from the test-retest analysis of MMC scores ranged from 0.157 to 0.602.

Conclusion:

This MMC system displayed poor to moderate test-retest reliability and did not demonstrate the ability to discriminate between individuals who were and were not likely to suffer an MSKI.

Reliability, validity, and maturation-related differences of frontal and sagittal plane landing kinematic measures during drop jump and tuck jump screening tests in male youth soccer players

OBJECTIVES

To determine the inter-rater and intra-rater reliability of frontal and sagittal plane landing kinematic measures during drop jump (DVJ) and tuck jump (TJA) tasks in male youth soccer players, to assess the concurrent validity between DVJ and TJA tests, and to evaluate the ability of both tasks to detect differences between players' stage of maturation.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional study.

PARTICIPANTS

223 male youth soccer players.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

Frontal plane knee projection angles (FPPA), and hip (HF), knee (KF) and ankle (AF) flexion angles at initial contact (IC) and peak flexion (PF) (i.e., the deepest landing position) in the sagittal plane were assessed.

RESULTS

Good-to-excellent inter- and intra-rater reliability (ICC > 0.75; TEM_ST < 0.3; CV_TE < 5%) for the FPPA, HF and KF during DVJ and TJA tasks were found. A low concurrent validity between DVJ and TJA measures was reported. Differences by maturity status (BF₁₀ > 10; error < 10; δ > 0.6) were only identified for the TJA. Pre-PHV group reported higher FPPA, HF-IC, HF-PF, and KF-IC values, as well as lower AF-IC than post-PHV. Pre-PHV also displayed greater HF-IC and KF-IC than circa-PHV group.

CONCLUSIONS

Although both tests are reliable, the TJA might be viewed as a more informative tool given it shows greater FPPA and can also detect differences by maturity status.
