Ram influence on ovarian and sexual activity in anestrous ewes: effects of isolation of ewes from rams before joining and date of ram introduction

The Influence of Male Biostimulation on Cloacal Anatomy and Egg-Laying Behavior in Young Female Muscovy Ducks (Cairina moschata forma domestica)

The importance of Muscovy ducks in industrial poultry production is growing; however, little is known about the physiology of their reproductive cycles. This study investigated the influence of male biostimulation on female ducks before the commencement of the laying phase. A total of 30 muscovy ducks, hatched in the same year at 289-341 days of age, were divided into two groups of 15 birds each and kept with and without contact with a male duck until the day of first egg-laying-319 ± 14 and 335 ± 13, respectively. Before reaching egg-laying maturity, the cloacae of 29 adult ducks were subjected to daily clinical assessments. The evaluations yielded four unique categories of outcomes, determined by assessing factors such as the degree of redness and protrusion of the mucous membrane, the moisture level, and swelling of the cloacal sphincter muscle. The results of this study on biostimulation revealed that, on average, female ducks that had contact with males laid their first egg 16 days earlier, weighing 78.7 ± 3.0 g, compared to the isolated female ducks, weighing 79.1 ± 7.0 g. Furthermore, there was no significant difference observed in the mean initial egg weight between the groups (p = 0.841). The cloacal morphology indicated significant morphological changes 25-26 days before laying. Efforts to improve Muscovy production and develop biotechnological techniques to modify these ducks' reproductive cycle will benefit from these advancements.

Glutamate Supply Reactivates Ovarian Function while Increases Serum Insulin and Triiodothyronine Concentrations in Criollo x Saanen-Alpine Yearlings' Goats during the Anestrous Season

The possible effect of glutamate supplementation upon ovarian reactivation and serum concentrations of insulin (INS) and triiodothyronine (T3) in anestrous yearling goats was evaluated. Goats (n = 32, 12 mo., 26° North, 1117 m) with a similar live weight (LW) and body condition score (BCS) were blood sampled twice per week for two weeks (2 × 1 week × 2 weeks) to confirm the anestrus status (<1 ng P4/mL; RIA). Thereafter, goats were randomly assigned to either 1) Glutamate (GLUT; n = 16, LW = 27.1 ± 1.09 kg, 3.5 ± 0.18 units, IV-supplemented with 7 mg of glutamate kg^-1 LW), or 2) Control (CONT; n = 16; LW = 29.2 ± 1.09 kg; BCS = 3.5 ± 0.18, IV saline). During the treatment period, 16 goats (eight/group) were blood sampled twice per week for six weeks. Such serum samples (2 × 1 week × 6 weeks) were quantified by their P4 content to evaluate the ovarian-luteal activity, whereas a sample subset (1 × 1 week × 6 weeks) was used to quantify their INS & T3 content to evaluate their metabolic status. Neither LW (28.19 kg; p > 0.05) nor BCS (3.51 units; p > 0.05) differed between treatments. Goats depicting ovarian reactivation favored the GLUT group (50 vs. 12.5%; p < 0.05). Neither INS (1.72 ± 0.15 ng mL^-1) nor T3 (2.32 ± 0.11 ng mL^-1) differed between treatments, yet a treatment x time interaction regarding INS & T3 concentration across time favored (p < 0.05) the GLUT group. The results unveil exogenous glutamate as an interesting modulator not only of ovarian reactivation, but of metabolic hormone synthesis.

The effect of saltfree - salt diet on the reproductive performance of Ile de France ewes

The aim of the present study was to establish the effect of salt-free - salt diet (SFSD) on the size of antral follicles during salt consumption, the duration of controlled breeding campaign and the fertilities of ewes from the Ile de France breed. Тhe experiment was carried out with 57 ewes, which were divided into 3 groups (19 ewes in each) depending on whether they were subjected to SFSD and their contacts with rams during the first 8 days of the beginning of breeding: Group I – SFSD + ram contact; Group II – only SFSD; Group III – no SFSD, only ram contacts. The first day of the salt diet coincided with the first day of ram contacts. Transrectal ultrasound examinations of the ovaries were done on days 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 and 7. The time of manifestation of estrus (in days), pregnancy rate and fecundity were studied. A significant effect of time (P<0.05) and diet (P<0.01) on the size of follicles was established. The onset of the first estrus, the shortest terms of breeding campaign, the fertility and the fecundity results gave us reason to favour the scheme applied to Group II. A stimulatory effect of the diet in that study was demonstrated, but the pattern was different from our previous studies.

Optimal dose of PG600 when given to progestogen-synchronized ewes during anestrus as affected by day of the year and temperature

The objective of this long-term study was to improve the out-of-season breeding rates for ewes by examining effectiveness of dose levels of PG600, a combination of 80-IU/mL pregnant mare serum gonadotropin and 40-IU/mL human chorionic gonadotropin. Each week, during the anestrous season from 1998 through 2016, mature ewes were inserted with 1 of 2 progestogen devices. After 9 to 13 d, at removal of the device, ewes were injected intramuscularly with a specific dose of PG600. A total of 1,402 ewes were treated in this study, with weekly treatment groups ranging from 3 to 12 ewes. Ewes were assigned randomly in equal numbers to 1 of 2 ram pens with one fertile ram in each pen. Rams were fitted with a marking harness. Between 36 and 48 h after removal of the device, rams were switched. Ewes were checked for crayon marks (indicative of estrus) at 36, 48, and 96 h after removal of synchronizing devices. Rams were removed after 1 wk. Pregnancy status was diagnosed at 90 d of gestation using radiography and verified at 120 d or at lambing. To explore the impact of dose level, daylight, and temperature on pregnancy rate, we formulated an ordered multinomial probit model. The model controls statistically for dose level, synchronization device type, device reuse, and natural variation in minimum daily temperature and day of the year (DOY). Predicted pregnancy rate and type of birth at 90 d of gestation were significantly affected by DOY and temperature as well as dose level. Both observed and predicted pregnancy rates were higher for PG600 dose levels between 2.00 and 3.50 mL than for those below 2.00 mL or above 3.99 mL. By giving optimal amounts of PG600 to anestrous ewes, producers will have a greater number of pregnant ewes at lambing during the out-of-season lambing time.

Glutamate supply positively affects serum cholesterol concentrations without increases in total protein and urea around the onset of puberty in goats

Different neurotransmitter and neuromodulatory systems regulate synthesis and secretion of GnRH. Whereas the endocrine and neural systems are activated in response to the metabolic status and the circulating levels of specific blood metabolites, glutamate receptors have been reported at hepatic level. This study evaluated the possible effect of glutamate supplementation upon changes in serum concentrations across time for total protein (TP), urea (UR) and cholesterol (CL) around the onset of puberty in goats. Prepuberal female goats (n=18) were randomly assigned to: (1) excitatory amino acids group, GLUT, n=10; 16.52±1.04kg live weight (LW), 3.4±0.12 body condition score (BCS) receiving an i.v. infusion of 7mgkg(-1) LW of l-glutamate, and (2) Control group, CONT, n=8; 16.1±1.04kg LW, 3.1±0.12 BCS. General averages for LW (23.2±0.72kg), BCS (3.37±0.10 units), serum TP (65.28±2.46mgdL(-1)), UR (23.42±0.95mgdL(-1)), CL (77.89±1.10mgdL(-1)) as well as the serum levels for TP and UR across time did not differ (P>0.05) between treatments. However, while GLUT positively affected (P<0.05) both the onset (207±9 vs. 225±12 d) and the percentage (70 vs. 25%) of females showing puberty, a treatment×time interaction effect (P<0.05) was observed in the GLUT group, with increases in serum cholesterol, coincident with the onset of puberty. Therefore, in peripuberal glutamate supplemented goats, serum cholesterol profile could act as a metabolic modulator for the establishment of puberty, denoting also a potential role of glutamate as modulator of lipid metabolism.

Sociosexual stimuli and gonadotropin-releasing hormone/luteinizing hormone secretion in sheep and goats

Sociosexual stimuli have a profound effect on the physiology of all species. Sheep and goats provide an ideal model to study the impact of sociosexual stimuli on the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis because we can use the robust changes in the pulsatile secretion of luteinizing hormone as a bioassay of gonadotropin-releasing hormone secretion. We can also correlate these changes with neural activity using the immediate early gene c-fos and in real time using changes in electrical activity in the mediobasal hypothalamus of female goats. In this review, we will update our current understanding of the proven and potential mechanisms and mode of action of the male effect in sheep and goats and then briefly compare our understanding of sociosexual stimuli in ungulate species with the "traditional" definition of a pheromone.

Long-term betacarotene-supplementation enhances serum insulin concentrations without effect on the onset of puberty in the female goat

The effect of betacarotene (BC) supplementation on the onset of puberty and serum insulin levels in goats was evaluated in the study. In June, prepuberal goats (n=17; 3 months old; 7/8 Saanen-Alpine; 26° NL) were randomly assigned to one of two groups: 1/ betacarotene group supplemented daily with 50 mg of BC (n=9; live weight [LW]: 17.3±1.0 kg; body condition score [BCS]: 3.34±0.12) or 2/ control group (CONT; n=8; LW:16.1±1.0 kg; BCS=3.17±0.12). From June to November, an intermittent blood sampling was performed twice per week in both groups to evaluate serum progesterone (P(4)), while monthly samples were intended for insulin (INS) determination. Initial mean LW (16.7±1.0 kg) and BCS (3.31±0.12) were similar (p>0.05) in both groups. Mean serum insulin (1.37 vs. 1.18±0.09 ng/ml), age of puberty (215.7 vs. 226.5±6.6 days) and the percentage of goats reaching puberty (44.4 vs. 25.0±17.0%) did not differ (p>0.05) between BC and CONT group, respectively. However, increase in serum insulin during the second half of the experiment was observed in BC group (p<0.05) which was positively correlated with LW (r=0.95; p<0.05). In addition, as LW (r=-0.89) and serum insulin (r=-0.76) levels increased, the natural photoperiod decreased, revealing negative correlations (p<0.05) between the respective variables. In this study, BC supplementation did not promote precocious puberty and did not affect the percentage of goats reaching activation of the hypothalamic-hypophyseal-gonadal axis during the establishment of puberty. Nonetheless, BC supplementation positively affected the release pattern of insulin suggesting a potential role of BC as pancreas-activating molecule.

Role of male novelty and familiarity in male-induced LH secretion in female sheep

Ewes supposedly need to be separated from rams before male stimuli can increase gonadotrophin secretion and induce ovulation. In the present study, we investigated the LH response of ewes to ‘novel’ and ‘familiar’ rams after varying periods of separation. In Experiment 1, ewes (n = 8 per treatment) were separated from familiar rams for 15 min or 1 month and then exposed to either familiar rams, novel rams or novel wethers. After 15 min or 1 month of separation, exposure to novel rams increased pulsatile LH secretion (P < 0.05) and induced an LH surge in all ewes whereas exposure to familiar rams or novel wethers had no effect on LH secretion (P > 0.1). After 1 month of separation, re-exposure to the same familiar rams increased pulsatile LH secretion (P < 0.05) in six of eight ewes, but only induced an LH surge in two of eight ewes. In Experiment 2, familiar rams were removed and returned after 15 min, 1 day or 17 days (n = 5 per treatment). None of these treatments affected LH secretion. We conclude that separation of ewes from rams is a prerequisite for familiar rams to increase LH secretion, but is not necessary if the rams are novel.

Patterns of estrous cycles, estrous behavior, and circulating prolactin in spring and summer in ewes selected for autumn lambing and exposed to ambient or long-day photoperiods

Estrous behavior in response to ambient and long-day photoperiods was evaluated in ewes developed by 10 years of selection for ability to lamb in autumn. Following October lambing, 67 ewes were moved indoors and exposed to long-day (16L:8D) or ambient photoperiods from February 2 until July 6. Two vasectomized rams with marking harnesses were housed with each group. Estrous behavior was monitored twice weekly. Ewes from the selection line were unresponsive to long days, with no effects on estrous behavior, frequency of ovulation, or circulating prolactin. Adult ewes were anestrus for only 34±3 d, but 2- and 3-years-old ewes were anestrus for 72±7 and 57±10 d, respectively. Frequencies of ovulation based on circulating progesterone concentrations in March, May, and June were 97%, 95% and 52%, respectively, indicating that many ewes that did not exhibit estrus still ovulated. Prolactin concentrations increased from 10 ng/ml in February to 27 ng/ml in March and 173 ng/ml in June but were not affected by light treatment. Ten ewes that failed to exhibit estrus behavior for at most 24 d during the main study were then monitored for 74 additional long days. Nine of 10 ewes did not exhibit estrus for periods similar to 1 or 2 estrus cycles during this period, but eight ewes re-initiated cycles by the end of the study on September 18. Selection for ability to lamb in autumn thus resulted in ewes with an abbreviated seasonal anestrus and reduced sensitivity to long days.

Glutamate supply positively affects serum release of triiodothyronine and insulin across time without increases of glucose during the onset of puberty in female goats

The current study evaluated the effect of glutamate supply on the onset of puberty and possible links to changes in serum concentrations of insulin [INS], glucose [GLU] and triiodothyronine [T(3)]. The study was conducted from June to November in prepuberal female goats (n=18; 3 mo. old, 7/8 Saanen-Alpine, 1/8 Criollo, 26° north) randomly assigned to two experimental groups: (i) excitatory amino acids group (group AA, n=10; 16.52±1.04 kg LW, 3.4±0.12 body condition score [BCS], receiving an intravenous infusion of 7 mg kg(-1) live weight [LW] of l-glutamate, twice a week, and (ii) control group (group CC, n=8; 16.1±1.04 kg LW, 3.1±0.12 BCS) receiving saline. Blood samples were obtained twice a week, for assessing progesterone [P(4)], as well as in a monthly basis to evaluate INS and T(3) by RIA. Mean final LW and BCS were 23.2±0.72 kg, 3.53±0.10 units, without differences between groups. The AA group depicted an earlier onset of puberty (6.9±0.3 compared to 7.5±0.4 mo.; P<0.05) and an increased ovarian activity (70±0.28% compared to 25±0.26%; P<0.05). Neither serum INS concentrations nor serum glucose concentrations differed between treatments (1.2±0.06 ng mL(-1) and 89.6±1.8 mg 100 mL(-1); P>0.05, respectively). Serum T(3) concentrations, however, were greater in AA goats (1.55±0.03 compared to 1.39±0.04 ng mL(-1)). In addition, a treatment x time interaction occurred (P<0.05) across the experimental period for both T(3) and INS, with increases by the last third of the experimental period, time at which the onset of puberty occurred in both experimental groups. No differences (P>0.05) for glucose concentrations across time occurred between treatments. Results indicate that, in prepuberal goats, glutamate acts as a cue for sexual maturation in a glucose-independent pathway, while both T(3) and INS seem to act as metabolic modulators for the establishment of puberty in goats. Actions of INS and T(3) are mediated directly on hypothalamic centers regulating the pulsatile release of GnRH or indirectly by peripheral cues reflecting INS-T(3) actions on somatic development remains to be determined.

Four hours of daily contact with sexually active males is sufficient to induce fertile ovulation in anestrous goats

The study was conducted on two consecutive years to determine whether ovulatory activity can be induced in anovulatory goats by exposing them to sexually active bucks for 4, 8, 12 or 16 h per day during 15 consecutive days. In experiment 1, females remained continuously in the experimental pens where they were in contact with males. One group remained isolated from males (controls) and four other groups were exposed to sexually active males for 4, 8, 12 or 16 h per day. In experiment 2, females were taken away to "resting" pens free of male odours between the periods of contact with bucks. They were allocated to 5 groups as in experiment 1. Ovulations were determined by progesterone plasma levels and transrectal ultrasonography. Pregnancy was determined by abdominal ultrasonography. In both experiments, more than 90% of females exposed to the bucks had at least one ovulation during the whole experiment whereas only 11 or 0% (experiments 1 and 2, respectively) did so in the control group (P<0.001). Furthermore, the proportion of females ovulating did not differ among groups depending on duration of contact with bucks (P>0.05). In both experiments, pregnancy rates were not affected by the daily duration of contact with males (P>0.05). To conclude, 4h of daily contact with sexually active males is sufficient to stimulate ovulatory activity in anovulatory goats and this effect is not due to the presence of olfactory cues from the males remaining in the pens.

Influence of nutritional and socio-sexual cues upon reproductive efficiency of goats exposed to the male effect under extensive conditions

This study evaluated the effect of nutritional supplementation and socio-sexual cues upon reproductive efficiency of goats exposed to the male effect under rangeland grazing conditions (22°N). Criollo goats (n = 73) were distributed in four experimental groups: (1) continuous males (CM, n = 19) in which males (n = 2) remained together with females from 7 March to 28 July; (2) supplemented males (SM, n = 16) in which males (n = 2) were kept separately and were individually supplemented with 18% crude protein and 2.77 Mcal ME kg–1 DM, during a 30-day period; (3) supplemented males exposed to the female effect (SM + FE, n = 19), in which supplemented males (n = 2) were maintained with females induced to oestrus before being used for male effect; and (4) supplemented males and supplemented females (SM + SF, n = 19) in which males (n = 2) were supplemented as in group SM, and females received the same supplementation as males 30 days before and 30 days after male introduction. Grazing was performed from 0900 to 1900 hours; liveweight (LW) was registered weekly before grazing and (or) supplementation. Ovarian activity was evaluated (serum P4 concentrations) in the four groups before and after male introduction. At the beginning of the study and supplementation, female LW did not differ among treatments (P > 0.01). However, during the supplementation phase, LW increased in a different fashion among groups (P < 0.002), favouring the SM, SM + FE and SM + SF groups. A positive correlation between female LW at the beginning of the rainy season and the onset of ovulatory activity was observed (r = +0.90; P < 0.01). The average date for the onset of ovarian activity differed (P < 0.001) among groups, being earlier in the SM + SF group (9 May ± 4.3 days), which also depicted the shortest interval between the introduction of males until the onset of ovulatory activity (P < 0.001). Results of the present study indicate that nutritional signalling of the reproductive activity of both female and male Criollo goats reared under marginal conditions surmounts the inhibitory effects of long-day photoperiods during the non-reproductive season. An increased level of nutrition during the anestrous season may be used to increase reproductive function of both male and female goats reared in harsh nutritional conditions and applied as a green, clean, and ethical reproductive tool at these latitudes.

The 'male effect' in sheep and goats--revisiting the dogmas

Male-induced ovulation in sheep and goats (the 'male effect'), documented during the period 1940-1960, has long been shrouded in preconceptions concerning how, when and why it worked. These preconceptions became dogmas but recent research is challenging them so, in this review, we have re-visited some major physiological (breed seasonality; characteristics of the response; the nature of the male stimuli) and physical factors (duration of male presence; isolation from male stimuli) that affect the phenomenon. We reject the dogma that ewes must be isolated from males and conclude that male 'novelty' is more important than isolation per se. Similarly, we reject the perception that the neuroendocrine component of the male effect is restricted to anovulatory females. Finally, we re-assess the relative importance of olfactory and non-olfactory signals, and develop a perspective on the way male-induced ovulation fits with preconceptions about pheromonal processes in mammals. Overall, our understanding of the male effect has evolved significantly and it is time to modify or reject our dogmas so this field of research can advance. We can now ask new questions regarding the application of the male effect in industry and develop research so we can fully understand this biological phenomenon.

Enhanced skeletal growth of sheep heterozygous for an inactivated fibroblast growth factor receptor 3

Normal fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3) acts as a negative bone growth regulator by restricting chondrocyte proliferation and endochondral bone elongation. In sheep, a heritable mutation that inactivates FGFR3 produces skeletal overgrowth when homozygous, this condition is commonly referred to as spider lamb syndrome (SLS). We hypothesized that sheep heterozygous for the inactivated FGFR3 mutation (FGFR3(SLS/+)) would exhibit enhanced long bone growth and greater frame size; additionally, the isolated effects of increased bone growth would translate into greater BW and larger LM area relative to normal lambs at harvest. The current study investigated bone length and LM area of FGFR3(SLS/+) sheep at maturity and during growth. At maturity, FGFR3(SLS/+) ewes exhibited a larger frame size and longer bones than normal FGFR3(+/+) ewes (P < 0.05). Similarly, FGFR3(SLS/+) lambs had greater frame sizes than normal FGFR3(+/+) lambs, as indicated by increased metacarpal III length and height at withers (P < 0.05). The FGFR3(SLS/+) lambs took longer than the normal FGFR3(+/+) lambs to reach the 60-kg common BW harvest end point (P < 0.05). The FGFR3(SLS/+) lambs showed no difference in BW, ADG, or LM area at any age compared with normal FGFR3(+/+) lambs (P > 0.2). A similar LM area produced in the context of a greater frame size and skeletal length produces a greater muscle volume, thereby potentially increasing meat yield. The results of this study suggest that FGFR3(SLS/+) animals exhibit a relaxation of the normal inhibition of chondrocyte proliferation, resulting in an increase in the overall frame size. The sheep industry could utilize the naturally occurring genetic mutation in FGFR3 to potentially increase meat yields with enhanced skeletal growth as an alternative to exogenous growth promotants.

Importance of the signals provided by the buck for the success of the male effect in goats

Under temperate and subtropical latitudes, ewes and goats display a reproductive seasonal pattern and their sexual activity during the anestrous period can be stimulated and synchronized by the introduction of males in the group, which is called the "male effect". The response of females to the male effect in the middle of the anestrous season is weak or absent. This failure may be due to the inability of the female to respond to males, as a result of a refractoriness of the female to the male stimulus. But, it may also be due to a low quality stimulus provided by the male which is, as the females, in seasonal rest. We tested this latter hypothesis in seasonally inactive goats kept under subtropical conditions by comparing the use of males with their sexual behavior stimulated or not by photoperiodic treatments. Treated males were able to induce estrous activity of females during the whole anestrus season. We have also determined that previous separation of the males and continuous contact during teasing are not absolute requisites when active bucks are used. While odor from the male and its sexual behavior play a primary role in inducing ovulation, vocalizations appear to facilitate the display of the does' estrous. It remains to be determined to which extent these conclusions apply under temperate latitudes and with more seasonal breeds.

Maintaining contact with bucks does not induce refractoriness to the male effect in seasonally anestrous female goats

A study was performed to determine if complete separation between sexes is a pre-requisite to stimulate sexual activity of anovulatory female goats by male exposure in mid-anestrus when reproductive activity is greatly inhibited. The response to the male was studied in anovulatory goats which had either been in contact with bucks before the stimulation (n = 22; CONT), or totally isolated from bucks (n = 22; ISOL). At the time of male exposure, the bucks from the CONT groups were removed and females of both groups (CONT and ISOL) were divided into two subgroups (n = 11) exposed to novel bucks (n = 1 per subgroup), either in sexual rest (sexually inactive; SI) or in which sexual activity had been induced by a photoperiodic treatment (sexually active; SA). The sexual behavior of the SA bucks during the first 5 days of stimulation was greater than that of SI bucks (P < 0.01). Regardless of whether females had been (82%) or not (91%) exposed to bucks before teasing, most goats stimulated by SA males displayed estrous behavior and ovulation in the first 15 days following stimulation, whereas no female from the two subgroups exposed to SI bucks showed estrous behavior and only one of them ovulated (P < 0.02). These results indicate that previous isolation of seasonally anovulatory goats from bucks is not required to stimulate their reproductive activity by the male effect, if sexually active bucks are used.

Overview of the response of anoestrous ewes to the ram effect

The present review summarises knowledge of the reproductive response of anoestrous ewes to the introduction of rams – in other words, the ram effect. The ovarian and endocrine response, the factors that determine whether ewes will respond or not (associated with both the stimulus and the receptivity of the ewes) and some aspects of practical management are discussed. Information on the use of the ram effect to stimulate post-partum, prepubertal and cyclic ewes is also given. New insights are provided on ovarian response patterns, including recently collected information on luteal responses. The existence of delayed ovulation (5–7 days after the introduction of the rams) followed by luteal phases of normal or short length, luteal cysts and luteinised follicles is reported after scanning the ovaries with ultrasound. Endocrine parameters for depth of anoestrus, such as LH pulsatility and FSH concentrations, and how the concentrations of these hormones should be considered are discussed. Particular attention is paid to the observation of spontaneous, higher LH pulsatility and higher FSH concentrations in anoestrous ewes that respond to rams with luteal phases than in those that fail to respond. The use of progestogen priming and single progestogen administration and the possible advantages for synchronisation of oestrus are also discussed. Other factors that should be considered before the ram effect is applied, such as the strength of the stimulus and some practical considerations, are also included.

The male effect, mounting behavior, and the onset of estrus in farmed muskoxen1

Muskox farming is an emerging industry in Alaska. For such an endeavor to succeed, it is necessary to develop fundamental husbandry tools specifically for this species. This study examined the role of the bull in the onset of seasonal ovarian activity and the synchrony of estrus and tested the efficacy of a radiotelemetric estrus detection system. Twenty parous female muskoxen, ranging in age from 4 to 15 yr, were divided into three groups (balanced by age and body weight). Groups received early bull exposure (EBE; August 1, n = 7), late bull exposure (LBE; August 22, n = 6), or remained physically isolated from a bull (NBE; n = 7). Just before bull introduction, radiotelemetry transmitters were attached to the rump of muskox cows in the EBE and LBE groups. Plasma samples were collected from all the cows twice weekly and analyzed for progesterone (P4). The mean date of onset of seasonal ovarian activity was earlier in the EBE and LBE groups than in the NBE group (P < 0.001) and was earlier in EBE (P < 0.021) than in LBE. All EBE and LBE cows conceived to the first fertile cycle, giving 100% fertility. The time interval for the onset of ovarian activity between the first and last cow within each group was 7 d in the EBE group, 12 d in the LBE group, and 24 d in the NBE group. Radiotelemetry correctly identified estrus 95% of the time (18 of 19 instances). Mean length of estrus for each cow, calculated from the time of first mount until last mount, was 771 +/- 98 min (range = 4 to 1,508 min). Mean number of mounts during estrus was 8.89 +/- 1.29 (range = 3 to 25 mounts). Length of estrus at the first short cycle did not differ from the length of the first fertile estrus between, or within, individuals. Estrous behavior was initiated more frequently during the night (2300 to 0500; P < 0.05). Bull introduction can be used as a simple, low-cost management tool for synchronizing estrus in farmed muskoxen. Radiotelemetry was an effective tool for identifying breeding behavior in this species.

The role of pheromones and biostimulation in animal reproduction

It is now known that pheromonal communication plays an important role in mammalian behaviour and reproductive processes. Chemical communication with pheromones is one means of transmitting such information. In mammals, signalling and priming pheromones are thought to act either singly or in combination through olfaction, auditory, visual (sight) or tactile stimuli. Pheromones are air-borne chemical substances ("signals") released in the urine or feces of animals or secreted from cutaneous glands that are perceived by the olfactory system and that elicit both behavioural and endocrine responses in conspecifics. Extensive studies in insects, rodents, swine, sheep, goats and cattle have established the importance of pheromones in the strong influence exerted by the male on reproductive activity in the female. There is a pheromone produced by the queen honey bee, which has two functions: inhibition of queen rearing and suppression of oogenesis in workers and in addition attracts drones during nuptial flight. It has also been demonstrated that the urine of male mice, rats, feral species and other wild rodents contains a priming pheromone that is responsible for hastening puberty in the females. Pheromones in the wool, wax and urine of a ram are sufficient to stimulate ewes to ovulate, while the buck has a strong characteristic seasonal odor and a buck jar containing the odor of the buck can be used as an aid in the detection of oestrus in does. The mere presence of the boar at the time of insemination of the sow improves sperm transport and ovulation, while the presence of the vasectomised bull has been reported to hasten the onset of puberty in heifers and also early resumption of ovarian activity in cattle following parturition. The role of pheromones in bovine reproduction is not as clearly defined as in sheep, goats and swine. Pheromones and other allelomimetic cues can exert profound effects on reproductive activity via the hypothalamic system that generates pulses of gonadotropin-releasing hormone. Manipulations of these factors and other pathways linking environmental inputs to reproductive output can lead to developing the concept of "control systems technologies", aimed at controlling reproductive performance. The knowledge acquired on the effectiveness of biostimulation; the factor which conditions it and the biological mechanism which produces it in livestock species, allows its use as a breeding management tool. The understanding of the role of pheromones could be of potential economic importance in addressing some of the problems associated with livestock production in the tropics. The biostimulation technique offers a potentially useful and practical way to improve reproductive efficiency in livestock species in the tropics. The exact nature of the cues and the role of biostimulation in livestock species especially swine, sheep, goats and cattle in developing countries require more attention.

Induction of ovulation in postpartum suckled beef cows: a review

Prolonged postpartum acyclicity in suckled beef cows reduces the calf crop, and causes economic loss to beef cattle producers. Once anterior pituitary LH stores have been replenished between Days 15 and 30 post partum in suckled beef cows, methods to initiate cyclicity include non-hormonal methods such as weaning of calves (either complete, temporary or partial), or exposure to bulls, and hormonal methods such as administration of GnRH (either single injection, intermittent injections, or continuous infusion), gonadotropins (eCG, FSH, hCG), and steroids (estrogens, anti-estrogens, and progestogens). Weaning is costly, reduces growth rate of weaned calves, and short cycles are common after weaning-induced ovulation. Exposure of cows to bulls is not practical and its effect is not predictable. Repeated injections of GnRH, or a single injection of hCG are not always effective; ovulation is always followed by a short cycle, and usually a return to acyclicity. Estrogens and anti-estrogens do not consistently shorten postpartum anestrus. Exogenous progestogens include intravaginal devices, such as controlled-internal drug release (CIDR) or progesterone-releasing intravaginal device (PRID), norgestomet implants, and the feed-additive melengestrol acetate (MGA). Administration of exogenous progestogens is more practical than, and offers more advantages over, other treatments to shorten postpartum acyclicity in suckled beef cows. Mimicking the short cycle after Week 3 post partum, by maintaining circulating progesterone at subluteal concentrations or circulating progestin at intermediate concentrations, extends the life-span and allows terminal maturation of the postpartum dominant follicle as in cyclic cows, by initiating endogenous GnRH and LH pulses. This is followed by an LH surge, ovulation and normal cycles. The benefit from using exogenous progestogens after Week 3 post partum in suckled beef cows is that ovulation is induced, cyclicity is initiated, the resulting CL has a normal life-span and function, and there is no need to change management, such as weaning of calves. We present a model for the induction of ovulation and initiation of cyclicity using exogenous progestogens after Week 3 post partum in suckled beef cows.
