Environmental and genetic factors affecting the weaning-estrus interval in sows

We examined the effects of environmental and genetic factors on the weaning-to-estrus interval (WEI) in sows. In order to perform the analyses of the environmental factors, 8104 observations of the 1st to the 6th WEI were carried out, while 6548 observations of the 1st to the 3rd WEI were carried out for the analyses of genetic factors. The environmental model included as fixed effects, herd, genetic line, year and season of birth, as well as the covariates, age of sow at farrowing, litter size at birth and lactation length. Genetic analysis was performed by repeatability and multitrait models. The mean and coefficient of variation for WEI were 7.02 days and 100.6%, respectively. The linear effect of lactation length and the quadratic effect of the age of sow at farrowing affected the WEI. Herd, year and season of farrowing were significant sources of variation for WEI, and there was no influence of genetic line or of litter size at birth. Heritability estimated by the repeatability model was 0.04, while heritabilities obtained by the multitrait model were 0.07, 0.02 and 0.07 for the first three WEI, respectively. Estimates of genetic correlations among the different WEI were of moderate to low magnitude. It was concluded that environmental factors, such as year and season of farrowing, lactation length, age of sow at farrowing and herd, should be considered in the model for best estimation of genetic parameters for this trait. Although with only a small possible genetic gain, selection can be made based on the first WEI.

Genetic correlations between reproduction and production traits in swine

Genetic correlations between reproduction and production traits were estimated in swine. Reproduction traits investigated were age at first service (AFS), number of live-born piglets in the first litter (NBA1), interval from weaning to first service after first litter (WTS1), number of live-born piglets in the second litter (NBA2), and interval from weaning to first service after the second litter (WTS2). Females generating the data were Norwegian Landrace born in nucleus herds between 1990 and 2000, and the number of records ranged from 13,792 to 56,932. Genetic correlations were estimated among the main production traits in the breeding goal: adjusted age at 100 kg live weight (A100), percentage of lean meat content (LMC), individual feed consumption from 25 to 100 kg (FC), and bacon side quality (BSQ). Average adjusted backfat thickness (BF) was included as a production trait. The A100 and BF traits were recorded on gilts on-farm with 190,454 records, whereas LMC, BSQ, and FC were recorded on-station with the number of records ranging from 12,487 to 12,992. Analyses were carried out with a multivariate animal model using average information restricted maximum likelihood procedures by first running each reproduction trait with A100 and BF, followed by each reproduction trait with LMC, BSQ, and FC. Average heritabilities for reproduction traits were as follows: AFS (0.38), NBA1 (0.11), WTS1 (0.06), NBA2 (0.12), and WTS2 (0.03); and for production traits: A100 (0.30), BF (0.44), FC (0.22), LMC (0.58), and BSQ (0.23). The highest genetic correlation was estimated between A100 and AFS (r(g)= 0.68), also resulting in a positive genetic correlation between FC and AFS. Growth (A100) was negatively (i.e., unfavorably) genetically correlated to NBA1 and NBA2 (r(g) = 0.60 and rg = 0.42 respectively), and so the genetic correlation to FC also became unfavorable (r(g)= 0.23 and r(g) = 0.20). Single-trait selection for enhanced LMC would also affect NBA1 and NBA2 unfavorably (r(g)= -0.12 and r(g)= -0.24). Correlations between BF at 100 kg live weight and reproduction traits were close to zero; however, a low genetic correlation between BF and WTS1 was obtained (r(g)= -0.12), indicating that selection toward reduced BF at 100 kg live weight may have an unfavorable impact on WTS1.

Heritability of body length and measures of body density and their relationship to backfat thickness and loin muscle area in swine

The objective of this study was to estimate heritability for body length (LEN) at the end of performance testing and to estimate genetic correlations with backfat (BF) thickness and loin muscle area (LMA) in Landrace, Yorkshire, Duroc, and Hampshire breeds of swine. Also examined were two measures of body density involving body length and weight and their relationships to backfat and loin muscle area. Data consisted of performance test records collected in a commercial swine operation from 1992 to 1999. Boars from 60% of the litters were culled at weaning based on a maternal breeding value of the dam. Remaining boars and all females were grown to 100 d of age (15,594, 55,497, 12,267, and 9,782 Landrace, Yorkshire, Duroc, and Hampshire pigs, respectively). At this time, all pigs were weighed (WT100) and selected for performance testing based on a combination of maternal and performance indexes, which differed by breed. All pigs were weighed at the end of the 77 d performance test (WT177) when BF, LMA, and LEN were measured. Two measures of body density involving length were calculated: Body mass index (BMI) = WT177/LEN2 and body density (DENSITY) = WT177/LEN. For each breed, genetic parameters were estimated using an animal model with random litter effects and multiple-trait REML procedures. A series of three-trait models including WT100 and combinations of two other traits in each analysis was conducted. Fixed effects included contemporary group and age as a covariate. Average estimates of heritability were 0.16 to 0.32 for LEN (unadjusted for WT177), 0.12 to 0.26 for LEN (adjusted for WT177), 0.23 to 0.33 for DENSITY, and 0.16 to 0.25 for BMI. Genetic correlations between LEN and LMA were low. Genetic correlations between LEN (unadjusted for WT177) and BF were 0.10 to 0.41. Adjusting LEN for WT177 gave correlations of 0.11 for Landrace and Hampshire and negative correlations (-0.06 and -0.19, respectively) for Yorkshire and Duroc. Genetic correlations between LMA and DENSITY and between LMA and BMI were comparable and ranged from 0.44 to 0.54. Genetic correlations between BF and DENSITY were slightly higher (0.53 to 0.68) than those between BF and BMI (0.37 to 0.67). In these data, not much relationship between BF and body length at a constant weight and age was found. There was a negative relationship between LMA and LEN at a constant weight and age, implying that longer pigs had smaller LMA.

Effect of birth litter size, birth parity number, growth rate, backfat thickness and age at first mating of gilts on their reproductive performance as sows

The present study was performed to evaluate retrospectively the influence of birth litter size, birth parity number, performance test parameters (growth rate from birth to 100kg body weight and backfat thickness at 100kg body weight) and age at first mating (AFM) of gilts on their reproductive performance as sows. Traits analysed included remating rate in gilts (RRG), litter size, weaning-to-first-service interval (WSI), remating rate in sows and farrowing rate (FR). Data were collected from 11 Swedish Landrace (L) and 8 Swedish Yorkshire (Y) nucleus herds and included 20712 farrowing records from sow parities 1-5. Sows that farrowed for the first time during 1993-1997, having complete records of performance test and AFM, were followed up to investigate their subsequent reproductive performance until their last farrowing in 1999. Analysis of variance and multiple regression were applied to continuous data. Logistic regression was applied to categorical data. The analyses were based on the same animals and the records were split into six groups of females, i.e. gilts, primiparous sows, and sows in parities 2-5, respectively. Each additional piglet in the litter in which the gilt was born was associated with an increase of her own litter size of between 0.07 and 0.1 piglets per litter (P<0.001). Gilts born from sow parity 1 had a longer WSI as primiparous sows compared with gilts born from sow parity 4 (0.3 days; P<0.05) or parity 5 (0.4 days; P<0.01). Gilts with a higher growth rate of up to 100kg body weight had a larger litter size (all parities 1-5; P<0.05), shorter WSI (all parities 1-5; P<0.05) and higher FR (parities 2 and 5; P<0.05) than gilts with a lower growth rate. Gilts with a high backfat thickness at 100kg body weight had a shorter WSI as primiparous sows (P<0.001) compared with low backfat gilts, and 0.1 piglets per litter more as second parity sows (P<0.01). A 10 day increase in AFM resulted in an increase in litter size of about 0.1 piglet for primiparous sows (P<0.001) and a decrease (P<0.05) for sow parities 4 and 5.
