Influence of postpartum weight and body condition change on duration of anestrus by undernourished suckled beef heifers

Late gestational nutrient restriction in primiparous beef females: nutrient partitioning among the dam, fetus, and colostrum during gestation

Fall-calving primiparous crossbred beef females [body weight (BW): 451 ± 28 (SD) kg; body condition score (BCS): 5.4 ± 0.7] were allocated by fetal sex and expected calving date to receive either 100% (control; CON; n = 13) or 70% (nutrient restricted; NR; n = 13) of metabolizable energy and metabolizable protein requirements for maintenance, pregnancy, and growth from day 160 of gestation to calving. Heifers were individually-fed chopped poor quality hay and supplemented to meet targeted nutritional planes based on estimated hay intakes. Dam BW, BCS, backfat, and metabolic status were determined pre-treatment, every 21 d (BW and metabolic status) or 42 d (BCS and backfat) during gestation, and post-calving. At birth, calf BW and size were measured, and total colostrum from the most full rear quarter was collected pre-suckling. Data were analyzed with nutritional plane, treatment initiation date, and calf sex (when P < 0.25) as fixed effects. Gestational metabolites included day and nutritional plane × day as repeated measures. During late gestation, CON dams gained (P < 0.01) maternal (non-gravid) BW and maintained (P ≥ 0.17) BCS and backfat, while NR dams lost (P < 0.01) maternal BW, BCS, and backfat. Circulating glucose, urea N, and triglycerides were less (P ≤ 0.05) in NR dams than CON at most late gestational timepoints after treatment initiation. Circulating non-esterified fatty acids were greater (P < 0.01) in NR dams than CON. Post-calving, NR dams weighed 63.6 kg less (P < 0.01) and were 2.0 BCS less (P < 0.01) than CON. At 1 h post-calving, NR dams had less (P = 0.01) plasma glucose and tended to have less (P = 0.08) plasma triglycerides than CON. Nutrient restriction did not affect (P ≥ 0.27) gestation length, calf birth weight, or calf size at birth. Colostrum yield was 40% less (P = 0.04) in NR dams than CON. Protein and immunoglobulin concentrations were greater (P ≤ 0.04), but free glucose and urea N concentrations were less (P ≤ 0.03), in colostrum of NR dams than CON. Colostrum total lactose, free glucose, and urea N were less (P ≤ 0.03) in NR dams than CON, but total protein, triglycerides, and immunoglobulins were not affected (P ≥ 0.55). In summary, beef heifers experiencing late gestational nutrient restriction prioritized partitioning nutrients to fetal growth and colostrum production over maternal growth. During undernutrition, fetal and colostral nutrient demands were largely compensated for by catabolism of maternal tissue stores.

Phenotypic and genetic correlations of beef replacement heifer feeding behaviour, feed intake and feed efficiency with cow performance and lifetime productivity

Objectives were to quantify the phenotypic (r_p ) and genetic (r_g ) correlations between early-life feeding behaviours, dry matter intake, and feed efficiency and measures of cow performance and lifetime productivity traits. Traits were measured on 1,145 crossbred replacement beef heifers and then on cows over parities one to four. Feeding event duration (FD) was phenotypically correlated with cow prebreeding body weight (PBWT; r_p 0.29-0.45), cow prebreeding back fat thickness (PBBF; r_p 0.35-0.49), progeny weaning weight (WW; r_p 0.09-0.31) and progeny birthweight (BW; r_p -0.06 to 0.17). Feeding event frequency (FF) was phenotypically correlated with PBBF (r_p 0.16-0.30). Dry matter intake (DMI) was phenotypically correlated with PBWT (r_p 0.16-0.20) and PBBF (r_p -0.22 to -0.05). Feeding event duration was genetically correlated with PBWT (r_g 0.38-0.41). Feeding event frequency was genetically correlated with PBWT (r_g -0.43 to -0.39). Dry matter intake was genetically correlated with PBWT (r_g -0.27 to 0.14). Days in herd (DIH) was phenotypically correlated with FD and DMI (r_p  = 0.12, 0.20, respectively). Lifetime productivity was phenotypically correlated with FD and FF (r_g  = 0.25, 0.22, respectively). Calving interval was phenotypically correlated with FD and FF (r_p  = -0.12, -0.14, respectively) and genetically correlated with FF (r_g  = -0.41). Due to moderate positive correlations with cow weight, caution would be required in selection to prevent an increase in mature cow size. Use of FF, FD, DMI and a measure of feed efficiency such as residual feed intake adjusted for back fat (RFI_FAT ) in a balanced selection index is recommended.

Seasonal changes in the reproductive performance in local cows receiving artificial insemination in the Pursat province of Cambodia

Objective

The present study aimed to survey seasonal changes in reproductive performance of local cows receiving artificial insemination (AI) in the Pursat province of Cambodia, a tropical country, to investigate if ambient conditions affect the reproductive performance of cows as to better understand the major problems regarding cattle production.

Methods

The number of cows receiving AI, resultant number of calving, and calving rate were analyzed for those receiving the first AI from 2016 to 2017. The year was divided into three seasons: cool/dry (from November to February), hot/dry (from March to June), and wet (from July to October), based on the maximal temperature and rainfall in Pursat, to analyze the relationship between ambient conditions and the reproductive performance of cows. Body condition scores (BCS) and feeding schemes were also analyzed in these seasons.

Results

The number of cows receiving AI was significantly higher in the cool/dry season than the wet season. The number of calving and calving rate were significantly higher in cows receiving AI in the cool/dry season compared with the hot/dry and wet seasons. The cows showed higher BCSs in the cool/dry season compared to the hot/dry and wet seasons probably due to the seasonal changes in the feeding schemes: these cows grazed on wild grasses in the cool/dry season but fed with a limited amount of grasses and straw in the hot/dry and wet seasons.

Conclusion

The present study suggests that the low number of cows receiving AI, low number of calving, and low calving rate could be mainly due to poor body condition as a result of the poor feeding schemes during the hot/dry and wet seasons. The improvement of body condition by the refinement of feeding schemes may contribute to an increase in the reproductive performance in cows during the hot/dry and wet seasons in Cambodia.

Pregnancy loss in beef cattle: A meta-analysis

Pregnancy loss in beef cattle causes both management and economic challenges to a producer. A meta-analysis was conducted to quantify reproductive failures that occur during fertilization, early embryonic development, and late embryonic/early fetal development periods of gestation in beef cattle. The meta-analysis included more than 56,000 diagnostic records in 159 studies from 48 papers with 12 studies included in fertilization and pre- blastocyst loss analysis (FERT; days 1-7 of gestation), 107 in early embryo (EEM; days 7-32), and 40 in late embryo/early fetal period (LEF; days 32-100) analysis. Although fertilization rates are reportedly high in beef cattle, significant developmental failure occurs within the first 7 days of gestation. Approximately 28.4 % of embryos will not develop past day 7 of gestation with most embryonic losses occurring before day 4. By the conclusion of the first month of gestation, 47.9 % of cows submitted to a single insemination at day 0 will not be pregnant. Overall, LEF between days 32-60 and 100 was 5.8 %. Bos indicus animals had greater (P =  0.001) EEM compared to Bos taurus, but there was no difference (P =  0.39) for the LEF period between subspecies. Primiparous cows had greater EEM (P =  0.002) compared to nulliparous heifers and multiparous cows; and nulliparous heifers had a greater LEF compared to primiparous and multiparous cows (P =  0.048). Collectively, these cumulative findings provide a baseline assessment of pregnancy loss specific to beef cattle.

Effects of timing of weaning on energy utilization in primiparous beef cows and post-weaning performance of their progeny1

Early weaning is used to minimize cow nutrient requirements in situations where feed inputs are scarce or expensive. For many years, maintenance energy requirements have been assumed to be 20% greater in lactating compared with non-lactating beef cows. While not well established, maintenance energy requirements are thought to be greatest in primiparous cows and to decline with age. Consequently, early weaning primiparous cow-calf pairs should improve overall efficiency, particularly in situations where mid-to-late lactation forage or feed nutritive value is low. The objective of this study was to determine the biological efficiency of early weaning and maintenance energy requirements of lactating versus non-lactating primiparous cows. Experiments were conducted in two consecutive years using 90 primiparous cows and their calves (48 in yr 1, 42 in yr 2). Pairs were randomly assigned to one of the six pens (8 pairs/pen yr 1, 7 pairs/pen yr 2) and pens were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatments; (1) early weaning (130 d ± 15.4; EW, n = 6) and (2) traditional weaning (226 d ± 13.1; TW, n = 6). Late lactation cow and calf performance and feed consumption were measured for 92 d (yr 1) and 100 d (yr 2). Cows were limit-fed to meet maintenance requirements, while calves were offered ad libitum access to the same diet in a creep-feeding area. Calves were not allowed access to the cows' feed. Cow feed intake, body condition score, body weight (BW), milk yield and composition, and calf body weight gain and creep feed intake were recorded. After accounting for lactation and retained energy, there was a trend for greater maintenance energy requirements of lactating primiparous cows (P = 0.07). From the early weaning date to traditional weaning date, calf average daily gain (ADG) was greater (P < 0.01) for TW calves. Feed and energy efficiency of the pair was improved for the TW system (P < 0.01). Greater ADG were reported for EW calves during the stocker period (P = 0.03), but there were no differences during the finishing period (P > 0.40). At harvest, BW was greater (P = 0.02) and gain to feed ratio tended (P = 0.06) to be improved for TW calves. The increased TW calf performance offset the additional maintenance costs of their lactating dams, resulting in the TW system converting total feed energy to kilograms of calf BW gain more efficiently.

Divergent breeding values for fatness or residual feed intake in Angus cattle. 4. Fat EBVs’ influence on fatness fluctuation and supplementary feeding requirements

The productivity of 500 Angus cows, divergently selected for either rib fat or residual feed intake (RFI) based on BREEDPLAN estimated breeding values (EBVs) and managed under two levels of nutrition (stocking rates), was evaluated. The study examined the effects of genetic line, nutrition and weaning history on profiles for weight, rib fat depth, fatness (rib fat depth adjusted for weight) and supplementary feed requirements from just before the first joining as heifers through to the weaning of their third calf. Cows gained both weight and fat as they grew older. Observed fluctuations in weight and rib fat depth, within each year, were associated with pasture availability and physiological demands. Cows that did not wean a calf in a given year became heavier and fatter than cows that did; and they remained so when they calved the following year. High-fat and High-RFI were always fatter and lighter than Low-fat and Low-RFI cows, respectively. The difference in rib fat and fatness between High- and Low-RFI lines (P < 0.001) was similar to, although slightly greater than, the difference between High- and Low-fat lines (P = 0.048) reflecting differences in rib fat EBVs between High-RFI (3.2 ± 1.47) and Low-RFI (–0.7 ± 1.3) compared with High-fat (1.1 ± 0.78) and Low-fat (–1.4 ± 0.67). Cows on High-Nutrition were heavier and fatter than those on Low-Nutrition (P < 0.001) but there were no significant interactions between genetic line and nutrition (P > 0.05). Supplementary feeding threshold was reached earlier by Low-fat and Low-RFI cows than their counterparts. Calculations based on the data in the present paper estimate that if cows lose condition at a rapid rate (1 condition score/month), then a cow with an extra 1 mm rib fat EBV would take 7.5 days longer to reach the same supplementary feeding threshold. Fat EBVs can, therefore, be a useful tool in assisting beef producers to match genotype to their production system.

Divergent breeding values for fatness or residual feed intake in Angus cattle. 5. Cow genotype affects feed efficiency and maternal productivity

Cow bodyweight gain, calf weaning weight, feed intake and maternal productivity of 500 Angus cows, in 64 replicate groups, were measured over three parities at two locations (Struan and Vasse) as part of the Beef CRC Maternal Productivity Project. The cows were sourced as heifers from the top and bottom 10% of BREEDPLAN Rib Fat EBV (High-Fat and Low-Fat), and from High and Low residual feed intake (RFI) selection lines (High-RFI and Low-RFI). Each of the four genotypes were run under High- and Low-Nutrition (measured as feed on offer) at both sites. The High-Fat cows were 7% more efficient at producing weaner calves under Low-Nutrition than were the Low-Fat cows. This was driven primarily by the 4% difference between the lines in weaning rate. When weaning rate differences were accounted for (as covariate), there was no difference between the Fat lines in the efficiency of weaner weight production. When the weight gain of the cow was included as an output in addition to calf weaning weight, there was also no difference between the Fat lines in efficiency. Low-RFI cows were always more efficient at producing weaner calves than were the High-RFI cows. This was primarily driven through a 7% reduction in annual feed intake (across both nutrition treatments). However, the Low-RFI cows were leaner, had 6.3% lower weaning rate and calved on average 5.4 days later than did the High-RFI cows. Furthermore, the largest differences in feed intake were in spring when feed availability is greatest. In the context of the results herein, a balanced breeding program should include selection for improved reproduction and low RFI.

Comparison of wet brewers' grains or dried distillers' grains as supplements to conserved bermudagrass forage as winter feeding options for beef cows

The objective of this study was to examine the use of 2 byproduct supplements and conserved warm-season forage as winter feeding options for primiparous beef cows. Gestating Angus ( = 48) and Brangus ( = 24) 2-yr-old cows were stratified by BW and breed to 1 of 12 pens. Pens were randomly assigned 1 of 2 supplements, wet brewers' grains (WBG) or dried distillers' grains (DDG). Coastal bermudagrass hay or round bale silage (RBS) was fed free choice (6 pens each) and cows received WBG or DDG supplements at a daily rate of 0.05% BW (DM basis) prorated for feeding 3 d/wk. Total BW and BCS changes did not differ ( = 0.65 and = 0.93, respectively) between DDG- and WBG-supplemented cows. Total amount of forage DM offered and mean calculated daily forage DM offered did not differ ( = 0.59 and = 0.20, respectively) between supplement treatments. Estimated daily mean and total supplement DM offered was greater ( < 0.001) for WBG than for DDG treatments. The same 2 supplements and forage sources were used in an unbalanced 6 × 4 design to measure intake, digestibility, and rumen parameters in ruminally fistulated steers. Supplement did not affect forage DMI of hay ( = 0.31) or RBS ( = 0.63). Total DMI was not different ( = 0.37 and = 0.73) for hay-based and RBS-based diets, respectively. Total tract digestibility tended to be greater ( = 0.06) for DDG than for WBG in hay diets but was not different ( = 0.76) for RBS diets. Daily mean ruminal pH was greater ( = 0.03) for WBG than for DDG when supplemented to hay-based diets. In RBS diets, a supplement × hour interaction ( = 0.05) existed for ruminal pH. Daily mean ruminal ammonia N concentration was greater ( < 0.001) for WBG-supplemented diets compared with DDG-supplemented diets. A supplement × hour interaction existed for ruminal ammonia in hay- ( < 0.001) and RBS- ( = 0.09) based diets. Ruminal pH and ammonia N concentrations stayed in ranges adequate to support ruminal metabolism and cattle performance. Marginal differences in ruminal measures between high-moisture and dry byproduct supplements resulted in no differences in cow performance when offered with hay or high-moisture forage. High-moisture forage sources can be coupled with high-moisture byproduct supplements.

Survey of smallholder beef cattle production systems in different agro-ecological zones of Cambodia

A survey was conducted to better understand the contribution of farm productivity to rural household income and identify differences in production systems, feeding practices and development constraints to smallholder beef cattle producers in the four agro-ecological zones (AEZs) of Cambodia. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to interview 360 households in the four AEZs: I, the Great Lake Floodplain; II, the Mekong Floodplain; III, the Coastal and IV, the Plateau/Mountainous. In addition, samples of common nutritional resources used for cattle feed were collected for nutrient composition analysis, plus cattle were scored for body condition. Rice farming and cattle production were the most common sources of income in all AEZs. The average cattle herd size was 3.7 (SD = 2.4), but the majority of households raised 1-3 animals. The most common cattle management system was grazing with supplementation, mainly with rice straw and 'cut-and-carry' natural grasses fed during the wet season in all AEZs. The body condition score of all cattle types was 3.2 (SD = 0.8), except for cows in lactation that were 1.8. Major constraints to cattle production in AEZs I, II and III were lack of quality feed resources, capital for cattle production and concerns on breed quality, whereas in AEZ IV, diseases were identified as the main constraint. This survey confirms the importance of cattle to smallholders in the four AEZs. Interventions including farmer education to improve husbandry skills, increase the utilisation of forages and crop residues and address disease issues are necessary to enhance cattle production and rural livelihoods in Cambodia.

Utilização do dispositivo intravaginal de progesterona, em até três usos, para inseminação artificial em tempo fixo de fêmeas Bos indicus

Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito do número de utilizações (até três) do CIDRÒ, manifestação de estro e ordem de parição sobre a taxa de prenhez em vacas Bos indicus. Utilizou-se 1176 vacas pluríparas e primíparas, lactantes, 30 a 60 dias pós-parto. Os grupos receberam CIDRÒ de primeiro, segundo ou terceiro usos, mais 2,0 mg de benzoato de estradiol no dia de introdução (D0) e, 500 μg de dinoprost trometamina, 300 UI de eCG e 0,6 mg de cipionato de estradiol na retirada dos dispositivos (D8), com a IATF 48 horas após (D10). Em 30 dias realizou-se o diagnóstico de gestação (D40). Analisaram-se as variáveis pelo PROC LOGISTIC (SAS) e pela regressão logística binária, considerando-se significância quando p < 0,05. A quantidade de usos do implante influenciou a taxa de gestação (1 uso < 2 usos – p<0,05; 1 uso < 3 usos – p < 0,01; 2 usos = 3 usos; p > 0,1), de 44,8%, 51,1% e 51,1% para CIDRÒ 1, 2 e 3 usos, respectivamente, bem como a ordem de parição (pluríparas 50,85% > primíparas 34,48%; p<0,01), e manifestação de estro (com estro 44,02% > sem estro 33,06%; p<0,01). O CIDRÒ pode ser utilizado por até três vezes, mas as taxas de gestação mostram-se mais baixas no primeiro uso em relação ao segundo e terceiro usos e com melhores resultados em pluríparas e com manifestação de estro.

Cow attributes, herd management, and reproductive history events associated with the risk of nonpregnancy in cow-calf herds in Western Canada

To identify herd management and cow characteristics associated with the reproductive success of cow-calf herds in Western Canada, 33,391 beef cows were followed from the beginning of the breeding season in 2001 through pregnancy testing in 2002. Breeding management and cow-level risk factors such as age, body condition score (BCS), and previous reproductive history, were measured through a series of herd visits by project personnel and records maintained by the herd owner. Pregnancy status was measured in 205 herds in the fall of 2001 and again in 200 herds in the fall of 2002. Cows least likely to be pregnant in the fall of the year were 10 years old or older, exposed to a bull less than 84 days, had a BCS ≤5 of 9 at pregnancy testing, <5 of 9 before calving, and lost condition between calving and the start of the breeding season, or had a prebreeding BCS <5 of 9 with a loss of condition between breeding and pregnancy testing. Other factors identified that decreased the likelihood of pregnancy in at least one of the 2 years included being a heifer or being a cow exposed to breeding after her first calf, and using a single bull on breeding pasture. Cows vaccinated for bovine viral diarrhea virus and infectious bovine rhinotracheitis and bred on community pastures were more likely to be pregnant than cows that were not vaccinated and bred on community pastures. Cows bred on community pastures that were not vaccinated were also less likely to be pregnant than cows that were not on community pastures regardless of vaccination status. Calving-associated events such as twin birth, Cesarean section or malpresentation, problems such as uterine prolapse or retained placentas, abortion or calf death within 1 hour after birth, or calving late after the start of the breeding season, were also associated with fewer pregnancies after accounting for all other factors.

Reproductive and productive response to suckling restriction and dietary flushing in primiparous grazing beef cows

The objectives of the present experiment were to analyse the reproductive and productive responses to suckling-restriction treatments and flushing in primiparous grazing beef cows. During 3 years, 153 primiparous anoestrus cows were assigned randomly to one of four treatments in a 2 by 2 factorial arrangement of suckling-management treatments and flushing. Suckling-restriction treatments started at 61 ± 10 days postpartum and consisted of applying nose plates to calves for 12 days (i.e. TS treatment) or 5 days of isolation of the calf from the cow followed by applying nose plates to calves for 7 days as calves were reunited with their mothers (i.e. IS treatment). Nutritional treatments (flushing v. control) started at the beginning of the breeding season, immediately after the suckling-restriction treatments were finished (73 ± 10 days postpartum), with cows receiving or not receiving 2 kg/day of whole-rice middling for 22 days. Cow body condition score (BCS) was recorded every 20 days from calving until 120 days postpartum. Duration of postpartum anoestrus (PPA) and probability of cyclicity were estimated by plasma progesterone concentrations analysed in weekly samples. Pregnant cows were determined by ultrasound 42 days after bull introduction (early pregnancy; EP) and 30 days after the end of the breeding season (total pregnancy; TP). BCS at calving and changes in BCS from calving to the day of BCS nadir (ΔBCS) varied among years depending on forage availability and weather conditions. Increased cow BCS at calving decreased PPA (b = –41 days, P < 0.0001) and, in interaction with ΔBCS, increased EP (P < 0.008) and TP (P < 0.003). Calf weights at weaning and average daily gain were not affected by suckling-restriction or flushing treatments. Isolated temporary suckling control reduced PPA by 11 days when compared with temporary suckling control (P < 0.004). Flushing increased EP by 40%, which was also affected by BCS at calving and was greater in cows that gained, than in those that maintained or lost BCS. We conclude that flushing was useful in improving early pregnancy rates of primiparous beef cows with ‘suboptimal’ body condition (lower than 4.5) at calving and grazing native pasture.

Effect of protein supplementation on reproductive and productive performance in Bos indicus x Bos taurus heifers raised in the humid tropics of Costa Rica

In order to evaluate the effect of protein supplementation on the productive and reproductive performance of heifers, 45 Bos indicus x Bos taurus heifers, 673 +/- 146 days of age and weighing about 340 kg, were divided into two groups. The control group (n = 23) continued without supplementation, but the supplemented group (SG; n = 22) received concentrate at a rate of 1% BW kg per day. Animals were adapted to the concentrate over a 15-day period and then supplemented for 30 days, after which estrus was synchronized using a progesterone implant. Back fat thickness (BFT) was assessed by ultrasound. The SG had better average daily weight gain than the nonsupplemented group (0.63 +/- 0.16 vs. 0.51 +/- 0.13 kg/day, P < 0.05) and tended to show a better percentage ovulation (P < 0.10, 77% vs. 57%, respectively). However, this tendency was not reflected in the final pregnancy rates. No differences were observed between groups in dry matter intake and body condition scores. SG with a high BFT (>0.70 cm) showed a better ovulation percentage than those with low BFT (<0.69 cm; P < 0.01). Additionally, the pregnancy rate of supplemented heifers with high BFT tended to be better than heifers with low BFT in this same group (67% vs. 30%, respectively, P < 0.10). It is concluded that protein supplementation improved reproductive performance and that ultrasonography to measure BFT may be used to estimate reproductive performance.

Nutrition, synchronization, and management of beef embryo transfer recipients

A commercially viable cattle embryo transfer industry was established during the early 1970s. Initially, techniques for transferring cattle embryos were exclusively surgical. However, by the early 1980s, most embryos were transferred nonsurgically. For an embryo transfer program to be effective, numerous factors need to be in place to ensure success. Nutrition, estrous cycle control, and recipient management are all responsible for the success or failure in fertility for a given herd. Utilization of body condition scores is a practical method to determine nutritional status of the recipient herd. Prepartum nutrition is critical to ensure that cows calve in adequate body condition to reinitiate postpartum estrous cycles early enough to respond to synchronization protocols. Estrus synchronization for embryo transfer after detected estrus or for fixed-time embryo transfer without estrus detection are effective methods to increase the number of calves produced by embryo transfer. In addition, resynchronization of nonpregnant recipients effectively ensures that a high percentage of recipients will return to estrus during a 72 h interval and are eligible for subsequent embryo transfers. Numerous additional factors need to be assessed to ensure that the recipient herd achieves its reproductive potential. These factors include assessing the merits of nulliparous, primiparous, or multiparous cows, ensuring that facilities allow for minimal stress, and that the herd health program is well-defined and followed. Numerous short- and long-term factors contribute to recipients conceiving to a transferred embryo, maintaining the embryo/fetus to term, delivering the calf without assistance and raising and weaning a healthy calf.

Effects of supplementation and stocking rate on body condition and production parameters of multiparous beef cows

Fall-calving multiparous Angus × Hereford cows 3 to 10 years of age were stratified by age in a three by two factorial treatment arrangement to evaluate the efficacy of modifying stocking rate and supplementation strategy to manage cow body condition and production parameters over a 5-year study. Efficacy was evaluated quarterly in association with calving, breeding, weaning, and mid way between weaning and calving (i.e. in August). Three protein supplementation strategies (none, standard, strategic) were imposed across both a moderate (0·3 cows per ha) and a high (0·4 cows per ha) stocking rate. In the strategically supplemented group, protein supplement was provided to cows with a body condition score <5·5 at the quarterly evaluations. There was an effect of supplementation on pregnancy rate, which in combination with previously established culling practices resulted in different age profiles amongst supplementation strategies in years 2 to 5 (P < 0·01). Two statistical analyses were therefore conducted to dissociate the confounding effects of supplementation strategy and age. One model included the effect of stocking rate, supplementation strategy, production year, and all interactions; the second included the addition of age and its interactive effects. Stocking rate and supplementation strategy affected pregnancy rate in each of the models (P = 0·003 and P = 0·10, respectively). Standard, non-supplemented and strategically supplemented animals had estimated pregnancy rates of 0·83, 0·76, and 0·79, respectively (P = 0·10). The effects of nutrition on both calving interval and birth weight were independent of the model employed. Animals that were not supplemented had extended calving intervals (P = 0·06), but there was no effect of stocking rate (P > 0·10). Birth weight was not affected by supplementation strategy or stocking rate (P > 0·10). The lower 205-day weights of calves on a heavy compared with moderate stocking rate was independent of age (P = 0·02). However, the increased 205-day weight of calves born to strategically supplemented cows compared with those born to unsupplemented cows was only evident when data were not corrected for differences in age among groups (P = 0·03). Likewise, analyses of cow condition parameters using models without and with age resulted in different interpretations. These results suggest that strategic and standard supplementation result in similar animal performance and that the improvement in herd productivity associated with altering stocking rate and supplementation may partially be due to altered herd age dynamics.

Invited Review: Methods to Determine Body Fat Reserves in the Dairy Cow with Special Regard to Ultrasonographic Measurement of Backfat Thickness

As the dairy cow uses body energy reserves in early lactation, body condition scoring has become an integral part of dairy herd management. Several methods based on visual and tactile evaluation have been developed. Problems caused by the subjectivity of these techniques have been reported. Alternative approaches to predict energy reserves or energy balance in dairy cattle include metabolic profiling and measurement of live weight, heart girth, or skinfold thickness. A less common method to assess fat reserves in body tissues is measuring backfat thickness (BFT) by using ultrasound. An ultrasound technique has been established to predict carcass quality in beef cattle. A new aspect is the application of ultrasound as a monitoring tool in dairy herd management where another location has to be evaluated. This technique has been validated by relating BFT to total body fat (TBF) content and carcass BFT. Backfat thickness also has been related to other methods of body condition scoring. Target values for the development of BFT throughout lactation are available. The relationship between BFT and TBF content is highly significant although biased by multiple factors. A change in BFT of 1 mm equates to approximately 5 kg of TBF content. Measuring BFT by ultrasound is of added value compared with other body condition scoring systems because it is objective and precise. Changes in body condition can be detected and evaluated properly.

Supplementation to meet metabolizable protein requirements of primiparous beef heifers: II. Pregnancy and economics

Metabolizable protein (MP) requirements of spring calving heifers increase over the winter due to advancing gestation. The MP content of grazed winter forage is low, which may result in an MP deficiency. The objective was to compare the response of supplementing pregnant yearling heifers to meet MP requirements versus conventional CP supplementation. In 1997-98 and in 1998-99, pregnant, March-calving heifers (2,120 animals; 358 kg) at two locations of a commercial ranch in the Nebraska Sandhills, were used following breeding through calving as 2-yr-olds (cows). Heifers were randomly allotted to one of two supplementation treatments (about 265 heifers/treatment) each year at each of two locations (Ashby and Whitman, NE). Treatments were 1) supplementation to meet MP requirements (MPR) or 2) supplementation to meet CP requirements (CPR). Heifers grazed upland range and meadow and were offered supplements three times weekly from mid-September to mid- or late-February. Increasing amounts of meadow hay were fed from mid-December through calving. After supplementation ended in February, heifers were managed in one group at each location until the following October. Body weights and body condition scores were taken in September, February, and October. Two-yr-old pregnancy rates were determined via rectal palpation in October. Capital budgeting techniques were used to determine the economic return of supplementation strategies. There were no differences in BW (P = 0.41) or body condition score (P = 0.99) change during the winter among treatment groups across years and locations, but MPR cows were heavier (425 kg) than CPR cows (421 kg) at the time of 2-yr-old pregnancy testing (P = 0.07). Pregnancy rate was higher (P = 0.001) in the MPR (91%) compared to the CPR treatment (86%). Regression analysis showed that the response of the MPR treatment on pregancy rates tended to be negatively correlated with precalving body condition score (P = 0.11), body condition score loss over the winter (P = 0.07), and body condition score at weaning of the first calf (P = 0.08). The improvement in 2-yr-old pregnancy by supplementing to meet MP requirements improved the value of each bred heifer by 13.64 dollars. We conclude that balancing MP requirements during gestation may result in a subsequent increase in 2-yr-old pregnancy and increase the value of young females.

Genetic correlations among body condition score, yield, and fertility in first-parity cows estimated by random regression models

Twenty type classifiers scored body condition (BCS) of 91,738 first-parity cows from 601 sires and 5518 maternal grandsires. Fertility data during first lactation were extracted for 177,220 cows, of which 67,278 also had a BCS observation, and first-lactation 305-d milk, fat, and protein yields were added for 180,631 cows. Heritabilities and genetic correlations were estimated using a sire-maternal grandsire model. Heritability of BCS was 0.38. Heritabilities for fertility traits were low (0.01 to 0.07), but genetic standard deviations were substantial, 9 d for days to first service and calving interval, 0.25 for number of services, and 5% for first-service conception. Phenotypic correlations between fertility and yield or BCS were small (-0.15 to 0.20). Genetic correlations between yield and all fertility traits were unfavorable (0.37 to 0.74). Genetic correlations with BCS were between -0.4 and -0.6 for calving interval and days to first service. Random regression analysis (RR) showed that correlations changed with days in milk for BCS. Little agreement was found between variances and correlations from RR, and analysis including a single month (mo 1 to 10) of data for BCS, especially during early and late lactation. However, this was due to excluding data from the conventional analysis, rather than due to the polynomials used. RR and a conventional five-traits model where BCS in mo 1, 4, 7, and 10 was treated as a separate traits (plus yield or fertility) gave similar results. Thus a parsimonious random regression model gave more realistic estimates for the (co)variances than a series of bivariate analysis on subsets of the data for BCS. A higher genetic merit for yield has unfavorable effects on fertility, but the genetic correlation suggests that BCS (at some stages of lactation) might help to alleviate the unfavorable effect of selection for higher yield on fertility.

Postpartum acyclicity in suckled beef cows: a review

Prolonged postpartum acyclicity in suckled beef cows is a source of economic loss to beef cattle producers. Duration of postpartum acyclicity is influenced by suckling status, nutritional status, calving season, age, and several other factors. Although uterine involution begins and ovarian follicular waves resume soon after parturition, dominant follicles of these waves fail to ovulate, due to a failure to undergo terminal maturation. As a result, postpartum anovulatory dominant follicles are smaller than the ovulatory follicles in cyclic cows. Failure of postpartum dominant follicles to undergo terminal maturation is due to absence of appropriate LH pulses, a prerequisite for follicular terminal maturation prior to ovulation. Absence of LH pulses early post partum is primarily due to depletion of anterior pituitary LH stores, although GnRH pulses are also absent during this period due to suckling. Following replenishment of LH stores between Days 15 and 30 post partum, absence of LH pulses is due to continued sensitivity of the hypothalamic GnRH pulse-generator to the negative feedback effect of ovarian estradiol-17beta, which results in absence of GnRH pulses. This negative feedback effect of estradiol-17beta is modulated by suckling which stimulates release of endogenous opioid peptides from the hypothalamus. As the postpartum interval increases, sensitivity of the GnRH pulse-generator to the negative feedback effect of ovarian estradiol-17beta decreases. This is followed by an increasing frequency of GnRH discharges and LH pulses, terminal follicular maturation, ovulation, and continued cyclicity. The first ovulation post partum is usually followed by a short cycle due to premature luteolysis because of premature release of PGF2alpha from the uterine endometrium, which is possibly intensified by the suckling-induced oxytocin release from the posterior pituitary. A model for the postpartum ovulatory acyclicity and for the resumption of cyclicity is presented.
